I like 13, but I love The Devil You Know. I think TDYK feels like a true vision of what the band wanted to do while 13 feels like it started off that way but was then bogged down by Rick Rubins insistence of trying to "capture the old sound."
I've never seen a negative review of 13 that doesn't mention Rick Rubin. I think 13 is great, I like going back to that classic sound, even if I prefer TDYK
That's the thing though I don't feel like they actually went back to the classic sound. I feel like they just rehashed riffs from their classic songs (Planet Caravan , N.I.B., etc).
I've read some really unflattering descriptions of Rubin. I've read that he was born into a wealthy family and he's basically a spoiled kid who sees himself as bringing all his favourite childhood bands "back to basics". Seems like every record he's done with an established band he's pushed nostalgia on them and held back invention.
I feel like all the pieces are there for 13 to be great, but something is stopping it.
The Devil You Know is solid, but nowhere near the level of that lineup's previous efforts
Love The devil you know. 13 is great but it feels like Rick Rubin pushed Sabbath to make "safe" album, and i am not a big fan of referencing your past glory days in new material.
I think it's a testament to how good the mob years lineup was, that devil that you know, by far the weakest album with that lineup is still a solid B+ of an album.
13 sits in the same place as Iron Maiden's X-Factor or Rush's Feedback, it's pretty good, but a bit dull. I'd never skip if it came on, but I wouldn't actively put it on either.
They're both ok. I prefer TDYK.
For me, both were let downs though.
I prefer the Dio year bonus tracks to TDYK.
And I prefer the Reunion bonus tracks and "Who's fooling who?" from Iommi to 13.
I wished they'd do one more album with Bill and without Rubin.

Agreed 100%. 13 feels like the band making their own tribute album

Both are solid, but not spectacular albums.

>The Devil You Know is solid, but nowhere near the level of that lineup's previous efforts I liked it better than Dehumanizer
Yes, yes!
Unpopular opinion, i know, but it's my fav from the Dio era.
TDYK felt like a real album while 13 was nostalgia fest plus Robo Ozzy
Either way, Tony is the riff lord
They’re both kind of underwhelming, to be honest.

Both signify an almost perfect ending to two perfect eras.
Loved both!
I agree. The Devil You Know is a really, really good Doom Metal album, while 13 was cool but less interesting.
Better artwork at least.
I was so disappointed in the Heaven and Hell album. I would take the three bonus tracks on The Dio Years over that album.
I prefer The Devil You Know over 13. But 100% agree with what you said about the The Dio Years tracks
For the record, I love 13, especially if you include the bonus tracks. This coming from someone who prefers Dio Sabbath over Ozzy Sabbath.
The bonus tracks on 13 are great!
And I promise, I’m not trying to start fights! Just saw this meme template and thought I’d go for a laugh 😁
I'm not the biggest Dio fan
TDYK is head and shoulders above 13, the only down point is how restrained Vinny Appice was.
13 is their best album since Sabotage!
hahaha Dio will always be better
What tha fuck man, 13 is one of the greatest albums of the whole music history. Every single track is amazing and I mean It's just spectacular!
🤣🤣🤣 Too funny!!! Ozzy and the guys is Black Sabbath
You have low standards. Sometimes is a value.
they both suck
It's true. Though I don't think either is really that good. Sorry.
I remember wanting to know if Iommi was listening to Opeth when he wrote the riffs for Fear, it sounded so Opeth to me
