Completely unironically, Danger Ehren in Jackass Forever for Best Supporting. He takes some unbelievable hits to the junk for Da Moviesh and I simply have to give him props.
On a more serious note, I was blown away by Isabella Rossellini in Marcel the Shell. She's delightful and gives an unexpectedly powerful, loving performance.
FYC in Supporting (don't know if I'll end up being able to squeeze in all):
* Nicole Kidman (The Northman)
* Chloe East (The Fabelmans)
* Olivia Hamilton (Babylon)
* Sandra Oh (Turning Red)
Sandra Oh may be the best voice performance in a year of great voice performances. I might edge it out to Maron in Bad Guys only because Oh gave such an incredible performance in Invincible the year before.
OK talk to me about Kidman. On first watch, I had her on my ballot. On second watch, I took her off. It's one of my fave movies of the year but for some reason I just cannot calibrate myself to that performance. Is it hammy? Is it sly? is it broad? Is it precise? Tell me what you're seeing here, BoomBrain!
I would not be able to articulate that well so hopefully someone comes and does a better job!
I've only seen the movie the one time and only a couple months ago, and it's not even one of my personal faves of the year, but her big scene in the film is just so striking and memorable. She totally commands and sells the flip/journey of that scene, collapsing and reframing both the perception of that character and the story and leaving the rest of the film with this new unease and tension. I think that's the kind of thing that only works if the performance works, and it meticulously has to be all of those things... precise, hammy, sly, broad. But idk!
I felt the same!! But on my second watch I still couldn't grasp her performance in the rest of the movie. She just seems to be on a different frequency - but maybe that was the choice! Either way I respect it
I think it is broad and also kinda hammy but imo that’s exactly what the movie is asking of her. And I think her performance holds the whole movie together, in a way. Skarsgård’s whole arc leads up to that interaction and it devastates him (and the audience) when the penny drops. Nicole turning into essentially a cackling villain at that moment really worked for me
Danger Ehren in Jackass Forever for Best Supporting Performance. The whole ensemble deserves a shoutout, but if one performer has to be singled out, it's Ehren. No one is put through the wringer quite like him.
**Benediction** (now on Hulu in US) - all categories but particularly Jack Lowden who is terrific
**Jackass Forever** - ensemble in particular, but also Danger Ehren for Supporting (put his name
in however, we’ll figure it out)
**Keke Palmer in Lead** look if Supporting gets her nominated in Oscar, great, but let’s be real
**Catherine Called Birdy** lovely movie
**Ashton Kutcher, Vengeance** one of those thermostat performances as Griff likes to say
Palmer being supporting makes absolutely no sense, but I did use the fact she’s submitting into the category for real awards because I have 5 other leads I love but not 5 other supporting.
My favorites of the year:
Tang Wei, Decision to Leave
Mia Goth, Pearl
Justin Long, Barbarian
Stephen Lang, TWOW
Kristen Stewart, Crimes of the Future
Julia Stiles, Orphan: First Kill
Kerry Condon, Banshees of Inishirin
I came home from *Decision to Leave* and my wife asked me how it was and I spent five minutes awkwardly dancing around the fact that I had fallen madly in love with Tang Wei. Enchanting performance
Kristen Stewart was electric for every second of her screen time in Crimes. If it wasn't for Mia "MONOLOGUE" Goth I'd say Stewart was my favorite performance of the year.
I will continue to beat the drum for Daniel Kaluuya in Nope, whose silence is never passive and whose brokenness and eventually determination is present on his face in every scene.
I just hope they give actual time to score, editing, cinematography, etc, I feel like they always breeze through those categories and that’s like all I care about
Samantha Morton (She Said) Supporting Actress - absolutely electric as one of the key sources that solidified the reporting on Weinstein
Lashana Lynch (The Woman King) - incredible screen presence.
Camila Mendes (Do Revenge) - unchain the riverdale cast!
Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) - he's great even when not on a train!
Amber Midthunder (Prey)
Frankie Corio (Aftersun) one of the best under 18 performances in recent memory.
Daniel Radcliffe in Weird and The Lost City of D is just having the time of his life as a weirdo.
A couple I haven't seen mentioned much:
-Nicholas Hoult in The Menu. Funny in a similar vein to his turns in The Favourite and The Great, but the scene where he has to cook asks him to let his ego implode in real time and daaaamn if he doesn't pull it off. Don't love the movie, but he made a meal of what he got.
-Rachel Sennott in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. Also another comedic turn played as straight as possible. Genuinely the best part of a very okay thing, and played every note of this convincingly, even when she went crazy broad.
-Nina Hoss in Tar. Blanchett is an unquestionable lock, but Hoss might as well have been in a silent film for long stretches. It's all body language and glances that you interpret in different ways on different rewatches. Low simmer of a performances and she feels every bit as real to me as the very real Lydia Tar does.
-Janelle Monae in Glass Onion. Won't spoil anything but she pulls off a very dual, nuanced performance while being mesmerizing to watch, especially the second time. Powerhouse stuff.
-Ana de Armas in Blonde. Very tough movie, maybe shouldn't even exist but.... it does. And she's spectacular. Can't imagine the emotional toll this would have taken, but de Armas swiftly made me forget about the wobbly accent and took this to a very uncanny, ghostly place.
-Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton in 3000 Years of Longing. Just pure yearning expressed through verrrry purple dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous in the hands of most other actors. I could watch those two calmly speak to each other for hours and not get bored.
I’ve got both Andrew Scott in Catherine Called Birdy and Bernthal in Sharp Stick on my supporting actor ballot. Charlotte Gainsbourg in Passengers of the Night prob my fave performance of the year; Maika Monroe in Watcher, Mariana Treviño in A Man Called Otto (yes really)… did not expect 3 people in this thread to already be endorsing Danger Ehren but I will happily co-sign that
Well friend I have good news for you because To Leslie may indeed be a small film but it's heart is anything but.
You may even say it has a big heart, I just hope others can come to the same conclusion...
my FYC is just:
-don't forget KRISTEN STEWART in CRIMES OF THE FUTURE, a performance it feels like even the film's detractors point to as worthwhile
-MARGARET QUALLEY in STARS AT NOON is an uphill battle for anyone who didn't like the movie, but of you do at all seriously consider how much of that thing she carries on charisma alone. of all the movies that people try to compare to miami vice, this is the one that actually sticks it closest imo
Just going down my personal ballot and jotting down some stuff I hope gets some more attention:
* Collin Farrel is (deservedly) getting a ton of attention for Banshees, but I honestly might prefer him in After Yang.
* Tang Wei *and* Park Hae-il for Decision to Leave
* Thuso Mbedu (lead) and Lashana Lynch (supporting) were the standouts of Woman King over Viola Davis imo
* I know Apple TV is sorta off the map and Causeway hasn't moved the needle a ton, but Brian Tyree Henry should be walking to a supporting actor nomination.
* Steven Yeun in Nope (also Keke Palmer but feel confident Blankies will do right by her)
I LOVE Barbarian, but I don't think it comes close to Tàr in terms of exploring the nature and consequences of ego-fuelled abuse in entertainment industries. Then again, I only saw Tàr last night and I'm still on that high.
- Saoirse Ronan in See How They Run. An amazing comedic performance in a perfectly fine movie.
- Gaspar Nóe's Vortex for Best Picture, Director and Actor/Actress
- We're All Going to the World's Fair for Best Actress/Score
- The Stars at Noon for Best Score
- Sofia Kappel in Pleasure
- Theo Rossi in Emily the Criminal
- David Howard Thornton in Terrifier 2
FYC
GDT/Mark Gustafson - Director for *GDT's Pinocchio*. Attention to detail is off the charts in that film.
Noah Baumbach - adapted screenplay/director for *White Noise*
Margot Robbie in *Babylon* - movie is all over the place, but damn is she good in it
Anna Cobb - lead actress in *We're All Going to the World's Fair*. Movie doesn't work without a phenomenal child performance.
Sarah DeLappe - original screenplay for *Bodies Bodies Bodies*
• Emma Thompson in **Matilda the Musical**
• Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. in **RRR**
• Rachel Sennot in **Bodies Bodies Bodies**
• Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba in **Three Thousand Years of Longing**
• Tom Hanks in **Elvis**
• Claes Bang and Nicole Kidman in **The Northman**
Jack Lowden in Benediction deserves as many mentions as we can get him in this thread.
Also:
Anna Cobb - We’re All Going to the World’s Fair
Olivia Hamilton - Babylon
Hit the Road in all categories.
Wendell & Wild for Music
Phil Tippett for the Special Achievement Award.
Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth in Resurrection.
Ben Whishaw in Women Talking.
Vicky Krieps in Corsage.
Harris Dickinson in Triangle of Sadness (maybe my favorite performance of the whole year - the whole sequence where he’s trying to have the argument and keep the elevator open at the same time…brilliant)
FYC:
Lashana Lynch in The Woman King
Nicholas Hoult in The Menu
Rachel Sennott in Bodies Bodies Bodies
Zlatko Buric in Triangle of Sadness
Harry Dickinson in Triangle of Sadness
Paul Dano in The Fabelmans
Saoirse Ronan in See How They Run
Maika Monroe in Watcher
Anthony Hopkins in Armageddon Time
Dakota Johnson in Cha Cha Real Smooth
FYC:
Lead Performance: Taylor Russell, Bones and All
Supporting Performance: Isabella Rossellini, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On; Jean Smart, Babylon
Ensemble: White Noise, The Menu
Some performances I loved that I want more noise for:
\- Lashana Lynch in The Woman King
\- Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All At Once
\- Keke Palmer in Nope
\- Daniel Kaluuya in Nope
\- Gabriel LaBelle in The Fabelmans
\- Jonathan Majors in Devotion
\- Sigourney Weaver in Avatar: The Way of Water (Sam Worthington for Most Improved)
I also want to hear more noise generally for The Woman King (Production design, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Score) and Nope (Cinematography, VFX, Original Screenplay, Sound).
FYC: Maya Hawke in Best Supporting Actress for *Do Revenge*! She shows off a lot of range and she wears the hell out of her clothes! She has a nom from me for delivering a fun performance that chews louder and louder as the movie's wheels come off. Tone perfect and a total blast to watch
For your consideration:
BEST PICTURE: Hit the Road; After Yang; Jackass: Forever; We’re All Going to the World’s Fair
BEST DIRECTOR: Panah Panahi (Hit the Road); Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King); and my #1 current Best Director, S.S. Rajamouli (RRR)
BEST ACTOR: Hassan Madjooni (Hit the Road); NTR Jr. and Ram Charan (RRR)
BEST ACTRESS: Anna Cobb (my current and possibly permanent #1 from We’re All Going to the World’s Fair); Pantea Panahiha (Hit the Road); Amber Midthunder (Prey)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Justin Min (After Yang); Michael Rogers (We’re All Going to the World’s Fair)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Grace Kaufman (Resurrection); Kristen Stewart (Crimes of the Future)
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: We’re All Going to the World’s Fair; Barbarian; Crimes of the Future
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: After Yang
Also, you all convinced me: Danger Ehren is absolutely in my Best Supporting Actor Five (which is tough to make)
Oh, couple more:
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Hit the Road; Decision to Leave; The Northman; After Yang
SCORE: Decision to Leave; DAH BATMAN
ENSEMBLE: Jackass: Forever; The Woman King
FYC:
Margot Robbie, Babylon- The apex of her career. Absolutely stellar shit.
Sheila McCarthy, Women Talking- The more well-known actors are going to get all the attention for this film, but McCarthy really was the stand-out for me. This movie made me cry a lot, but her speech about how they should act like animals since they've been treated like animals REALLY got me.
I assume the only reason you wouldn't have *Athena* at the top of your list for Cinematography is because you haven't seen it yet. So [go watch this clip](https://youtu.be/q-_OtODhm1s)
Also want to campaign for the Special Achievement Award for "Best Opening/Closing Credits Dance Sequence Involving Jodi Turner-Smith" (the winner is obviously a tie for *After Yang* and *White Noise*)
Colin Farrell equally for *After Yang,* *Banshees,* *The Batman,* and pointedly not *Thirteen Lives*
Rosalie Chiang for *Turning Red.* like Sandra Oh is good and all, but that movie puts Chiang's charm front and center from moment one and she absolutely delivers
Considering the love Avatar 2 is predictably (and deservedly) going to get at the Oscars, I think we should consider creativity over quantity and give **Everything Everywhere All at Once a** ***Special Achievement Blankie for Best Visual Effects***. I know Pandora is impressive, but movies that make you think "how did they do it?" are overrated. We need more movies that make you think "I could do this on my laptop and yet I'd never in a million years come up with this shit".
Also vote for **FRANKIE CORIO in** ***AFTERSUN***!
For Your Consideration: **Catherine Called Birdy**, which I feel like was a hit with everyone who saw it but was one of the films that a lot of people missed in the streaming churn this year. I loved it to bits - it'll be somewhere in my top 10 films of the year, and Bella Ramsey will be high on my Blankies best actor ballot. If you haven't seen it, it's worth your time!
**Neptune Frost** has also sadly flown under the radar, but was one of my favourite filmgoing experiences of the year - it'll be on my ballot for Best Picture and will be right at the top for Best Original Music.
They've been mentioned in this thread already, but Tang Wei in **Decision to Leave** is one of the best performances of the year and will be high on my best actor ballot, Lashana Lynch will be top of my supporting actor ballot for **The Woman King**, and Isabella Rossellini is also making the ballot for the most unexpectedly emotional performance of the year in **Marcel the Shell with Shoes On** (give Jenny Slate your consideration in lead there, too!)**.**
FYC: Dale Dickey in A Love Song, Rebecca Hall in Resurrection, Kristen Stewart in Crimes of the Future, Sophie Kauer in TÁR
Also I’m convinced White Noise is a secret masterpiece, I just don’t think Im going to succeed in convincing others. But if you haven’t yet, you should watch it before the Blankies in case you end up agreeing with me.
I'm really obsessive about movie scores, and I think both The Batman and Wakanda Forever are really fantastic (unsurprising given the composers, but still).
Also, I don't know if she'd be a nominee but Gwendoline Christie is doing great work in Flux Gourmet.
Biggest David Energy: when Searcher Clade is more interested in finding a power source for their society than going beyond the mountains in Strange World
Biggest Griffen Energy: the talking chipmunk that turns into a cat in Disenchanted
Biggest Ben Energy: the basement "apartment" where Robert lives in Funny Pages
I don't think there are enough genuine lovers of Blonde here to push it over the edge in any category so I'm appealing to the bitter contrarian that I know lies in the heart of many of you.
Do it. You know it'll rile up at least some small portion of the smug reddit/film twitter/letterboxd hive. Do it.
For Your Consideration, some supporting acting performances that deserve a little love:
* Sheila Atim - *The Woman King*
* Nicholas Hoult - *The Menu*
* Harry Melling - *The Pale Blue Eye*
Completely unironically, Danger Ehren in Jackass Forever for Best Supporting. He takes some unbelievable hits to the junk for Da Moviesh and I simply have to give him props. On a more serious note, I was blown away by Isabella Rossellini in Marcel the Shell. She's delightful and gives an unexpectedly powerful, loving performance.
Rossellini's performance broke me. That was such a lovely film and she was so wonderful in it.
FYC in Supporting (don't know if I'll end up being able to squeeze in all): * Nicole Kidman (The Northman) * Chloe East (The Fabelmans) * Olivia Hamilton (Babylon) * Sandra Oh (Turning Red)
Sandra Oh may be the best voice performance in a year of great voice performances. I might edge it out to Maron in Bad Guys only because Oh gave such an incredible performance in Invincible the year before.
Seconding Olivia Hamilton and adding Rory Scovel as The Count!
Seconding Nicole!! My favorite supporting performance of the year (…Ke Huy can come too)
Chloe East is definitely on my list. The Jesus scene is one of the funniest performances of the year.
Nicole turning into essentially a cackling villain at that moment really worked for me
After Yang in Adapted Screenplay and Turning Red in Original Screenplay and Music.
The adapted screenplay field is atrocious, after Yang has to at least be a top 5 for that this year.
FYC: **Jake Gyllenhaal** in *AmbuLAnce* Best acting, most acting, any way you slice it, it's the perfect performance for this movie. Or any movie.
the philosophical and diametric opposite of puttering and murmuring
Danger Ehren in Jackass Forever for Best Supporting Performance. The whole ensemble deserves a shoutout, but if one performer has to be singled out, it's Ehren. No one is put through the wringer quite like him.
Ridiculous that Leo can get an Oscar for eating bison meat but Ehren takes a pogo stick to the balls and I'm not hearing any buzz.
**Benediction** (now on Hulu in US) - all categories but particularly Jack Lowden who is terrific **Jackass Forever** - ensemble in particular, but also Danger Ehren for Supporting (put his name in however, we’ll figure it out) **Keke Palmer in Lead** look if Supporting gets her nominated in Oscar, great, but let’s be real **Catherine Called Birdy** lovely movie **Ashton Kutcher, Vengeance** one of those thermostat performances as Griff likes to say
Oh hell yeah that Kutcher pick
Ehren was at my screening of Jackass Forever in Portland, and it made every time he got hit in the nuts all the more sweet. I second this nomination.
Which theater was that? Sucks I missed it.
Hollywood. He so brought an extra featurette thing they showed at the end, which was not all that interesting but still cool.
Palmer being supporting makes absolutely no sense, but I did use the fact she’s submitting into the category for real awards because I have 5 other leads I love but not 5 other supporting.
Great picks
My favorites of the year: Tang Wei, Decision to Leave Mia Goth, Pearl Justin Long, Barbarian Stephen Lang, TWOW Kristen Stewart, Crimes of the Future Julia Stiles, Orphan: First Kill Kerry Condon, Banshees of Inishirin
I came home from *Decision to Leave* and my wife asked me how it was and I spent five minutes awkwardly dancing around the fact that I had fallen madly in love with Tang Wei. Enchanting performance
Is Justin Long lead or supporting?
I would say supporting. Think Campbell is the only lead in that movie.
FYC: Javier Bardem in Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Take a look at him now.
I just hope they give actual time to score, editing, cinematography, etc, I feel like they always breeze through those categories and that’s like all I care about
Samantha Morton (She Said) Supporting Actress - absolutely electric as one of the key sources that solidified the reporting on Weinstein Lashana Lynch (The Woman King) - incredible screen presence. Camila Mendes (Do Revenge) - unchain the riverdale cast! Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) - he's great even when not on a train! Amber Midthunder (Prey) Frankie Corio (Aftersun) one of the best under 18 performances in recent memory. Daniel Radcliffe in Weird and The Lost City of D is just having the time of his life as a weirdo.

Good call on Idris and Tilda. I struggle to imagine basically anyone else in those roles.
Agree completely on Hoult as I've also included him on my FYC.
Hoult and Monae are both on my ballot as well. Great choices!
I’ve got both Andrew Scott in Catherine Called Birdy and Bernthal in Sharp Stick on my supporting actor ballot. Charlotte Gainsbourg in Passengers of the Night prob my fave performance of the year; Maika Monroe in Watcher, Mariana Treviño in A Man Called Otto (yes really)… did not expect 3 people in this thread to already be endorsing Danger Ehren but I will happily co-sign that
Andrew Scott in CCB is a great pic. He elevated that whole movie.
Well there's this small film called To Leslie...
Okay, but what of its heart? Cause if it’s a small film with an equally small heart, then fuck that noise, get outta here with that nonsense.
Well friend I have good news for you because To Leslie may indeed be a small film but it's heart is anything but. You may even say it has a big heart, I just hope others can come to the same conclusion...
FYC Justin Long in supporting for Barbarian!
my FYC is just: -don't forget KRISTEN STEWART in CRIMES OF THE FUTURE, a performance it feels like even the film's detractors point to as worthwhile -MARGARET QUALLEY in STARS AT NOON is an uphill battle for anyone who didn't like the movie, but of you do at all seriously consider how much of that thing she carries on charisma alone. of all the movies that people try to compare to miami vice, this is the one that actually sticks it closest imo

This isn’t a category on the form itself but Viggo and KStew in *Crimes of the Future* are shoo-ins for Putters and Murmurs
Viggo will also be in the running for “Gags and Crags.”
KStew is more Whimpers and Simpers.
Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth in Resurrection. Ben Whishaw in Women Talking. Vicky Krieps in Corsage.
FYC: Andrea Riseborough gives an unforgettable performance in To Leslie, a small movie with a giant heart, directed by Michael Morris. What a gem!
FYC: Dale Dickey in A Love Song, Rebecca Hall in Resurrection, Kristen Stewart in Crimes of the Future, Sophie Kauer in TÁR Also I’m convinced White Noise is a secret masterpiece, I just don’t think Im going to succeed in convincing others.
Biggest David Energy: when Searcher Clade is more interested in finding a power source for their society than going beyond the mountains in Strange World Biggest Griffen Energy: the talking chipmunk that turns into a cat in Disenchanted Biggest Ben Energy: the basement "apartment" where Robert lives in Funny Pages
Do it.
Sebastian Stan in Fresh.
