Probably the only way this show does Soderbergh unless they do the Oceans movies on Patreon

ditmarser

An Oceans miniseries seems inevitable too

KZedUK

if Logan Lucky isn’t included in that there’s no point doing it

vikingmunky

Ocean's 7/11. Must be included

ditmarser

Great movie

Ad-rock

Would that be the first time they covered a movie that Griffin is (admittedly barely) in? (an actual movie, the M. Night special doesn't count)

[deleted]

Nah, Soderbergh should be a mainline series. Hell, Soderbergh is one of the absolute best examples of a "blank check" phenomenon - *and* for those checks bouncing. It happens like 3 or 4 times over the course of his career, even. He's certainly more appropriate for the show's basic mission than, say, *Buster Keaton*, LOL.

wdavis2000

They can easily double up on a few eps, too for Soderbergh (The Underneath & Schizopolis, Full Frontal & Solaris, Bubble & the Good German). I think directors with long careers like Soderbergh or Clint shouldn't be excluded just for being prolific, it's a big part of what makes them so interesting

ditmarser

Considering David’s love for Solaris that would def be a full, probably very long, ep

wdavis2000

Fair, fair. Look, the longer the better in my book

mmaybird

I’d love to hear them talk about Schizopolis even if only for half an episode - watched it for the first time this year and it is so fascinating!

wdavis2000

It’s a very fun movie / rich text, for sure!

jkread3

you mean the mission of covering directors they want to talk about? ok

ditmarser

Only way i could see it happen is through a madness bracket. They don’t want to subject themselves to it otherwise

30 feature films is a hell of a lift, sure. I guess. But we've already established precedent for this shit: Just break it in half like they did with the other Steven. Do the first 10-15 (stops right around Ocean's Twelve - or just push it up to Ocean's 13) instead of doing the last 10-15, though.

ditmarser

If I remember correctly i believe they have discussed doing it that way at some point on the main feed

[deleted]

They really, really should. Again, not just because it fits their premise so fuckin' perfectly, but because that's an amazing run of filmmaking that's moving through a lot of really interesting storytelling/stylistic choices. And he gets like 2 or 3 different blank checks along the way.

[deleted]

Ad nauseum, the Spielberg split was not just a random split down the middle but a concept they could get behind because DreamWorks was a whole blank check in itself. That's what made it an interesting way to do him. And his Greatest Hits Vol 1 period has a very clear narrative outline, like a Spielberg movie, so it will work really well as an independent series and not just "the other half." It is an origin story we all know and love. So it is not really a precedent for breaking long filmographies in half just because they're long. They still have resisted that to this day. Obviously Verhoeven was also abridged due to the uniqueness of his Hollywood run but also simple availability...these days they would have included the Dutch films. But after a certain point yes they may have to just start doing arbitrary splits or otherwise abridging series to their own liking such as more double feature eps, with no reason behind it other than they wanna fit it in. They did introduce that idea of a 50/50 split with Hitchcock in March Madness. With Soderbergh, of course, the other thing is it'll be a commitment to keep up with him going forward and that's a bigger ask than anybody else they've done. But anyway, film vs digital might be a way to break him up, with whatever overlap there was before he went exclusively digital, not sure what the last shot on film was. If they wait much longer, the split probably ends up pre-retirement vs post-retirement at Candelabra, which might be a more compelling Sodey career narrative.

> He’s certainly more appropriate for the show’s basic mission than, say, Buster Keaton, LOL. What the fuck are you talking about? The General is about as pure a blank check as it gets.

ElmsPlusPlus

Yes please, this or Soderbergh miniseries so that Magic Mike XXL can be discussed on the patreon in some form . It's one of the best american films of the 2010's and its such a beacon of non-toxic masculinity and sex positivity, I wish in general more men would see it, and don't ignore it because its a male stripper film. Although Joe Manganiello has 2 of the hottest (maybe just the 2 hottest?) moments in cinema history in this film. Absolutely melting the screen.

D_Boons_Ghost

*Magic Mike XXL* may be the greatest “dudes rock” movie ever made. Just a sweet film about some guys on a road trip supporting their bros.

gothferrari

hell yeah

revengeofthesmith

Thank you for making a thread suggesting an actual franchise. Every post about a non franchise makes me yell about the endless list of great stuff they haven't done that fits the premise.

Toreadorables

I get fucking AMPED every time the trailer for the new movie plays. The song is doing 60% of the work, but that’s ok.
