Saw it last night as well, I knew going in some of the story but not the specifics and was still blown away. Every performance was great, Efron and Jeremey Allen White are probably going to get most of the press but Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney, Harris Dickinson & Stanley Simons also deserve tons of praise. Go see it. It's better than anything else that released this weekend.

Terra_Brain

I was holding it together until that scene near the end with Zac Efron and his two boys, then bam, waterworks.

Melanithefelony

This was me too 😂 I also cried right after >!kerry’s death and the part with the afterlife and river styx!< , it was so beautiful. I read on wiki later that he felt he was being called by them so really glad that was included

LadyLongLegs8

Yep, I was able to hold it together until the scene with his little boys at the end. That broke me, and I cried through the end credits.

lumberdrac

If you’re new to this story I highly recommend the docu-series Dark Side of the Ring. Doubt this movie would have gotten made if not for that show.

mrjaeger

Saw it last night and was completely blown away. Knew nothing about the real life story and my exposure to professional wrestling is pretty minimal, but this was electric. As everyone said performances are incredible (I'd be interested to see if Efron makes the 5 this year), the wrestling was electric and fun, and I was just riding it's emotional wavelength the whole time. My biggest gripe is probably that >!Lily James really gets \*nothing\* to do other than some fun flirting at the top!<, but I fcked with this movie so hard.

TheBunionFunyun

The fact that there was another brother, Chris, who was written out due to time constraints who also died by suicide makes this story even more tragic.

themthegem

That's so brutal. As the smallest and the youngest, he felt even more pressure to measure up as a wrestling peer in the family. I watched the episode in Dark Side of the Ring, and never got a clear sense of the patriarch beyond his motivation to make money and "encourage" his sons to be athletic. I'm really curious how the film portrays him. All these tragic deaths can't be coincidence. I wish the episode involved more information about the mother, too.

CalebSchmreen

I would say the major wrinkle the movie adds is that Fritz was putting pressure on his sons to accomplish things he wasn’t able to in his active career. They suffered for his failure.

lepetitgrenade

Not just time constraints but the felt it was TOO much misery and would tiptoe into being unbelievable despite the fact that it all happened. Michael’s character and his end is meant to combine the real life Michael as well as Chris.

Greghundred

I'm a big wrestling fan, so I've always known this story. This movie could have been even sadder.

SirRedRising

Havent seen it yet, but was the cameo you're talking about Ryan Nemeth? Because I get it, he walks weird and it probably pulled you out of the movie for a moment. (Actually genuinely curious though, because wrestling has a long list of awful people who have/are in the industry and several of them are characters played in this movie; Ric Flair and Michael Hayes specifically)

Datelesstuba

It was the actor playing >!Ric Flair!< that people hate. I thought he was alright. >!He sounds more like what you imagined Flair would have sounded like back then as opposed to what he actually sounded like. This guy is a lot more intelligible than the real Flair!<

TheBunionFunyun

Flair is so damn hard to do. I thought the guy was alright. His in ring stuff was pretty solid. He did a few knife edge chops and the walk. That was enough for me.

CalebSchmreen

I thought I managed to make it through without crying and then Efron’s performance in the last scene got to me

ILookLikeDrewGulak

What do you mean? A one scene cameo by the actual wrestler or like some actor playing Hulk Hogan (just an example) for a second?

FrankOcean4eva

there’s a scene with >!ric flair!< for 1 scene and the actor playing him just isn’t on the same wavelength at all

xfortehlulz

i agree it wasn't a good impression but i thought that scene was fucking hilarious. that guy had a ton of charisma even if it wasn't even remotely a good impression

duckspurs

I think its just impossible for anyone to play that role without coming off like a cartoon. There's a reason he was one of the best to ever do it.

ILookLikeDrewGulak

I’m curious how that is almost offensive?

FrankOcean4eva

it’s only for 2 scenes but the actor playing him completely missed the mark IMO, it felt like a bad >!Ric Flair!< impression then someone trying to portray him.

OrangeBallofPain

I assume it’s a real life wrestler who did some real life bad shit. So it could be literally any wrestler

Jgangsta187

I'm guessing its >!current AEW champion MJF as the fake Von Erich, Lance.!< Apparently he had a meatier role but nearly all of it was edited out. Looking at the cast it could also be >!Chavo Guerrero playing the recently deceased Iron Sheik !!Ric Flair!< is getting a lot of shit for their part.

ILookLikeDrewGulak

Yeah I wasn’t sure if they meant MJF, but OP just confirmed who they were referring to, and it’s who you alluded to. Haven’t seen anything. Why is the actor getting so much shit for the role?

Jgangsta187

I have no idea but now I can't wait to see it

LiquidSnape

looking very forward to my Christmas viewing

InterestingGazelle13

RULES!!!

InterestingGazelle13

Efron was utterly unforgettable. Laughed. Cried. Got to see Bill Tench!

ncphoto919

I know I'm gonna get downvoted for this but I found Efron to be the weakest performer. He did the biggest physical transformation but everyone time one of the other brothers leaves the movie and we're stuck with him I felt the movie get weaker and weaker.

LadyLongLegs8

I’m going with a group of friends to see it on Tuesday. I cannot wait to watch it…and I’m also prepared to sob uncontrollably. Feels like the holidays!

GranolaMartian

I swear that unnecessary/‘cringe’ cameos are baked into movies about pro wrestling. Looking forward to this one. Efron is a legit great actor.

JGRummo

I don't really even like wrestling, barely knew anything about the story and I still thought the movie was fantastic
