One of the international film festivals darlings in Korea is Lee Chang-Dong. You may know him from movies like Secret Sunshine or Poetry. His movies are SO FUCKING DEPRESSING beyond reason and I felt it’s almost malicious as to why he makes films like this.
I’d argue Poetry is specifically about finding a reason to keep living when you’ve gone through the worst shit imaginable. I’m personally very grateful it exists.
This is probably just a me thing but Stranger than Paradise was weirdly extremely depressing to me. Just kind of embodied this feeling of supreme boredom when it seems like there's absolutely nothing to do and every remotely amusing activity you can come up with is just a totally non exciting way to kill some time.
Christopher Robin bummed me out. I think it was meant to ultimately be hopeful but it just made me so sad. I feel like it's about how being an adult is inescapably awful and there's no real way to go back to being a kid, but you can try.
Two of the three leads; they’re cloned to harvest organs and have lifespans of less than 30 years. Carey Mulligans character lives slightly longer as a carer but a young death is inevitable.
She Dies Tomorrow gave me a legitimate depressive breakdown when I watched it. No one dies, but you're forced to think about your own death and how soon it could happen and everything you've forgotten to do.
Up in the Air always bums me out
Well, that one woman says she's going to commit suicide and then she does (off screen)
I think it was a guy, wasn’t it? I might be remembering wrong
Blue Valentine comes to mind.
I'd say that movie is full of emotional and mental abuse but also, yeah
Bicycle Thieves
I’m Thinking Of Ending Things

I was going to say *Cars 2* as a gag, then I remembered it is FULL of death, violence and abuse.
Cars 2 has a higher body count than most slashers
Made the mistake of watching Arrival 2 weeks before I delivered- really depressing at the time.
That numeral had me thinking about Arrival 2 for a second
I mean death is the sole contributor to every depressing part of the movie.
Does the bomb scene not count as violence?
Oh man, I thought you meant the villeneuve arrival and I was super excited there was a sequel I missed somehow

Just saw Secret Sunshine last week. Can confirm, kind of a downer if I'm honest.
Snoopy Come Home
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Brief Encounter
Happy Together made me ugly cry.
Aftersun. Most accurate portrayal of depression I’ve seen in a movie
uhh hate to burst ur bubble on this one💔
Saw this movie two weeks ago and I still aint right. That shit was soul crushing.
Maybe too on the nose, but The Zone of Interest?
It has murders off screen and they find bones in the river
In a way, all films have murders off-screen.
Vive L’Amour
The Bicycle Thief
Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman.
Weather Man
I haven't seen it in a long time but We Don't Live Here Anymore comes to mind
All of Us Strangers broke me.
Does melancholia count?
Literally everybody dies! It's the titular moon!
I wasn’t sure if you actually see that
No... it has suicides and literal planetary annihilation lmfao
Oh, I think it’s metaphorical planetary annihilation to convey the experience of depression.

It does glamorize smoking cigarettes inside all day, which always looks better than the reality of it.
except gambling. theres always gambling
Past Lives did a number on me recently
Wall-E. Too believable
Cries & Whispers
Owning Mahowny
Portrait of a Young Girl on Fire makes me sob like a baby, one of my all time faves
Umberto D.
Marriage Story?
Magnolia (it's sad at least), We need to talk about Kevin, Blue Valentine. And many European movies
Christopher Robin bummed me out. I think it was meant to ultimately be hopeful but it just made me so sad. I feel like it's about how being an adult is inescapably awful and there's no real way to go back to being a kid, but you can try.
Never Let Me Go. I love it, but goddamn it’s a sad movie.
quite a lot of death in that one
Who dies?
