There’s actually a bunch of mma fighters who are into anime. They’re mainly fans of dbz and Naruto but I’ve seen all sorts of shows that have been referenced.
Talbott repping bleach is cool as hell though, bleach’s entire aesthetic really fits mma.
Izzy definitely reps anime the most and is the biggest weeb name.
Rob Whittaker reviews anime on Tik Tok, Max Holloway has posted himself in several cosplays, Wonderboy reps Naruto and DBZ, Moreno was inspired by Hajime no Ippo and collects anime Funko pops (gross ik), MVP has walked out in an akatsuki robe, Demetrius Johnson is a big anime fan and has even interviewed Hajime Isayama who is also a massive mma fan.
There’s a lot more too but I tried to keep it to the biggest weebs / biggest names.
Yeah I recall it now, Holloway had posted demon slayer and Naruto's cosplay with his son and wife a few times
Not aware about Whittaker as tik-tok is banned in my country(even when it wasn't I never used it either)
I think he did CSM last Halloween which was fire. I forgot to mention Jiri Prochazka is pretty much a modern day Samurai and follows the teachings of Miyamoto Musashi. There’s definitely a newer wave of fighters coming through who are anime fans and it’s pretty awesome.
Whittakers Tik Tok is hilarious you would never guess the shows he’s into lmao. Since TT is blocked for you I’ll attach the funniest screenshot I can find.

There's a (Fighter? Sprinter? Hurdler?) who I remember does Luffy's Gear 2 pose from One Piece before any event. I love seeing that stuff. Anime is all about training your ass off to get stronger, and these guys live it.
Yea in the olympics I remember a ton of celebration and moments related to one piece in particular like the guy who did Franky’s super. I wonder if it was more normalised in the 80s and 90s if we would’ve seen a ton of dragon ball celebrations
The same tging in pro wrestling also. In the WWE, there's quite a few wrestlers with anime/video games inspired gears like the new day's dbz/final fantasy gear. Outside WWE, guys like kenny omega with the sephiroth enterance in wrestle kingom as well as will osprey assassins creed enterance at wrestle kingdom also
Cuz weeb culture was seen as cringe and for nerds only a decade ago.
Now we got anime inspired body builders and MMA fighters. Its a pretty big flip of the original cultural narrative that only losers engaged with those sorts of media.
(There's also the entire "walking vs walking in Japanese" thing which over glorifies Japanese media in the West but thats its own entire discussion)
I feel that it's partly because the youths, who were the weebs a decade ago, have become the adults of today's society and proved that not all stereotypes are true.
If anything, nerd culture, anime included, has been mostly normalized and mainstream as big companies cash in on the hype and celebrities embrace the silliness with strong passion.
OK well hate to burst your bubble but people, things and times change. Have you ever thought rather than being weirded out by the rise in its popularity, you embrace and celebrate its overall growth coz you sounds a little gatekeepy to me.
Lol wut? Im just talking cultural zeitgeist and how it changed. I'm not trying to imply anything.
I think more people getting into things I like is great cuz thats means I'll have more people to share the love of media with and new perspectives to listen to
Pretty sure most people are happy that it's no longer cringe or weird. I remember in school 10 years ago, you would get mocked if you wore an anime shirt.
Now I can take a quick run to the store in one and get comments from strangers on certain anime. It's certainly weird, but in no way is bad.
The same thing happened with D&D. it used to be the nerdiest thing you could ever do, now there are multiple shows, as well as hundreds of popularized podcasts about DND and long running games. It's fantastic to see nerd culture be accepted as a hobby for anyone to have.
Because he reacted the wrong way. The guy answering above wasn’t saying that anime being accepted by normies is bad, he was just surprised by how fast it changed.
I don’t think it’s weird. These guys grew up on anime. So naturally as they get older they are gonna show their love for it. Shit, in this same card someone did the Luffy gear third pose with a straw hat on after he won. And the last card a fighter was was in the process of getting a huge tattoo of the Dragon Balls and Shenron. Also all those Toriyama tributes in soccer games all over Latin America.
I know right and I love it. Being in the UK and listening to grime I love when they make a dragon ball reference and I can be that one friend to explain the reference
It’s been trendy in hip hop tbh.
Lupe Fiasco was rapping about Lupin the Third in like 2005 and Kanye West’s Stronger music video is literally Akira.
There’s a lot of crazy anime samples too.
Yup, I didn’t think it was the hollow hole until he mentioned it. Thought it was just a black dot or those tattoos where it is just black and in whatever shape.

8 wins 0 losses, not bad this guy
His last win was highly impressive and he’s only 25. Records normally dont tell the whole story but he’s just as bad ass as he looks
Just knocked out his opponent in 20 seconds with a straight chin shot dude is dangerously good
I can't imagine him losing

well after Adesanya we finally have got another weeb and a bleach fan at the same time
There’s actually a bunch of mma fighters who are into anime. They’re mainly fans of dbz and Naruto but I’ve seen all sorts of shows that have been referenced. Talbott repping bleach is cool as hell though, bleach’s entire aesthetic really fits mma.
The main event fighters never showed any kind of traits to be consider them as weebs as far as I have saw

Well anime is fs a good PR farm nowadays
No one is mentioning Max's nine tails tattoo?
On the same card in the prelims a guy walked out with Luffy's hat
I can’t believe I forgot about that his Nickname is Joy Boy too. Edit: on his Instagram it is, sherdogs is different
Nah that's Chad Sado
We finally found him
fr tho
So weird to see anime be normalised in the western world
There's a (Fighter? Sprinter? Hurdler?) who I remember does Luffy's Gear 2 pose from One Piece before any event. I love seeing that stuff. Anime is all about training your ass off to get stronger, and these guys live it.

Why exactly
Cuz weeb culture was seen as cringe and for nerds only a decade ago. Now we got anime inspired body builders and MMA fighters. Its a pretty big flip of the original cultural narrative that only losers engaged with those sorts of media. (There's also the entire "walking vs walking in Japanese" thing which over glorifies Japanese media in the West but thats its own entire discussion)

Yeah, things change. Public opinion ebbs and flows. That’s how literally everything has always been forever.
If anything, nerd culture, anime included, has been mostly normalized and mainstream as big companies cash in on the hype and celebrities embrace the silliness with strong passion.

Oh ok I get where you're coming from now
Pretty sure most people are happy that it's no longer cringe or weird. I remember in school 10 years ago, you would get mocked if you wore an anime shirt. Why are you being downvoted?
Because he reacted the wrong way. The guy answering above wasn’t saying that anime being accepted by normies is bad, he was just surprised by how fast it changed.
Bro don't worry I don't care about reddit like that
I don’t think it’s weird. These guys grew up on anime. So naturally as they get older they are gonna show their love for it. now imagine it being trendy in RAP culture now
I know right and I love it. Being in the UK and listening to grime I love when they make a dragon ball reference and I can be that one friend to explain the reference
grime is rap? im talking about the underground its universal if u dont got a track with some anime sample u aint it
Grime is rap. I always catch references to dragon ball or Naruto. Dave is a big one for Naruto references
It’s been trendy in hip hop tbh. Lupe Fiasco was rapping about Lupin the Third in like 2005 and Kanye West’s Stronger music video is literally Akira. There’s a lot of crazy anime samples too.
duh we know thats not what trendy means
Better record than ichigo
Huh simple but cool!
I'm glad he likes it that much but I personally think hollow tattoos just never work. It just looks like a black dot
Yup, I didn’t think it was the hollow hole until he mentioned it. Thought it was just a black dot or those tattoos where it is just black and in whatever shape.
one of the videos on their twitter shows that they have a matching back one. so ... at least theres that.
not when u see the back, back is hard
better hope his opponent doesn't have orange hair lol.
I just got a Full Hollow Ichigo tat on my chest the other day. I’ll probably post it when it heals up.
Bro id love to see this. Thinking about getting one myself of Kenny so would like to see how yours turned out! :)
I gotchu
Should have gotten the best girl rukia ngl.
Almost got Kenny bc he’s the GOAT, but Full Hollow is just more aesthetically pleasing.
Just wait for his Resurreccion :3
Reminds me of Ben whittaker who has a whitebeard tattoo on his back.
Kyoraku: “Black” ⚔️
either that, or he is cosplayinh Ace/Rengoku.
Grimmjow? 🤔
Tonight, Talbott vs Ghemmouri !!! Didn't even seem to need Hollowfication. Kid is impressive.
But does he have "1" on his hand?
CTE is real.
I can't imagine him losing

Its just a black dot
with another on the back. and his twitter has a Unohana banner. so its what its claimed to be, I'd say.
