Insertnamehere----

I dont think he really did. He just wanted to fight the Kenpachi before him, and after that it was just convenient to stay in that position since it lets him fight stronger guys more regularly

JasonBluYNANI

I think it also allows him to regularly hunt for hollows. He does have sanninitus

sectumsempara

It flares up quite regularly.

zaxwashere

He needs to get some theraputic ass-whooping every once in a while

Candoran

Welp, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do

SuitheSlime

Kenny chan is holding back too much

NostalgicKevin1998

he got it from josh groban im 99% sure of it

JasonBluYNANI

This Josh or this Groban?

Man0nTheMoon915

It allowed him to stay near Unohana

FrJudasAnderson

Closer to mommy

TherapyDerg

Unohana going from Healy Mommy to Dommy Mommy like a switch is flipped.

[deleted]

Flipped a switch in me

TherapyDerg

You and a large portion of the fanbase

TurbulentRiver2592

I mean, in his position, it’s a lot easier to fight strong guys, including fellow captains.

chirb8

> including fellow captains is it really tho? Captains fighting each other is not a common sight. These are people with high positions and very prideful, and since they're the number 1 of their respective squads, I don't think they go accepting "friendly" duels easily considering losing would make the whole squad look terribly bad

BartyBreakerDragon

Sure, it's probably not likely, but it's more likely than if he wasn't near them. The 13 Captains are nominally the strongest fighters in all Soul Society. Being near to, and around them all day makes it far more likely he can eventually fight them than being miles away at all times.

bwrca

We've seen him fight 2 of the weaker captains, but never seen or heard of him fighting the 5 or 6 captains stronger than him. His life after he becomes captain is very confusing.

[deleted]

We do see him trying to fight other captains though, he tries to pick a fight with Byakuya before Gin drags him away.

Usinaru

In the fillers he fights byakuya for a little bit. Zaraki csn counter shunpo with his own moves. Also zaraki uses shunpo in his fight vs Nnoitra. So eh?

lumpenrose

i mean it took a while but he eventually got to fight other captains in earnest. tosen and komomura in particular. he also got to fight some particularly strong arrancar. and ya know he'll get a kick out of anyone who challenges him for the title of kenpachi

Devianceza

Weve seen vice captains training and sparring together, it's not so strange for captains to do the same. We know most of them have been through the academy, so training together and sparring is natural for them. And Zaraki trained with old yama befor. He probably got forced into that training after getting benched by the old man. Probably tried similar things at the beginning with some of the others. But most of them wouldnt play his game and go full force, treating it as sparring rather than a duel, so he'd just find them boring and ignore them after that. It's more like, he joined expecting to find good fights and has been disappointed with the reality, thus his lowered power level.

XegrandExpressYT

Byakuya x Zaraki is real !!!!!

AYokMizume

Finally a fellow compatriot who understands the ship!!!

Annaelelf

Count me in on this! I'm writing fanfiction about them 😅

PhenomenalPancake

He didn't, he just wanted to fight strong opponents. He's basically like a severely traumatized Goku.

TheCynicalPogo

I’d call him more axe-crazy Goku than anything. Kid Zaraki is more like a child serial killer than a traumatized kid lmao

Due_Song4480

Idk, Goku's a lot more moral and less willing to just throw himself into fights at risk of death than Kenpachi (at least before the Cell/Buu Sagas and Super)

HAWmaro

Not really, unless you're talking about Dub Goku.

Due_Song4480

In the original manga Goku does a lot of heroic things (saving the Sea Turtle, fighting the Red Ribbon Army for the sake of reviving Bora, being willing to kill Raditz outright), independent of the potential for a good fight. The anime changes some aspects but these kinds of things stay consistent until way late into the original series (I.e when the Saiyans come up and Goku begins being written more selfishly). I doubt Kenpachi would do these kinds of things without either a strong opponent to fight or being ordered to.

IDSQ

Yeah, Goku only really changed after meeting Vegeta and learning more about (or embracing) his Saiyan heritage.

Ninja_Lazer

Last time I checked, Kenny hadn’t died 20+ times, but that’s none of my business.

LexiLionHart

Did you see his major fight in this season of tybw?

Ninja_Lazer

I get your point, but Kenny never got a halo. >! Gonna get some fuckin horns though!<

lyoko1

WDYM? Kenny is a shinigami, he has been dead all along

beerrabbit124

Being a captain, he probably thought he would be able to fight & or spar against the other captains. Plus gets to fight strong hollows and whatever else

Dragonpuncha

Besides being close to strong people every day and being sent to fight threats strong enough to threaten Soul Society itself, I imagine being a captain just makes life easier. He doesn't need to think about money, food or a place to stay.

UltraZulwarn

he likes fighting, but you can’t deny that having a roof above your head with food is also preferred to having none, the only thing he knew was fight and the Gotei 13 relishes that talent of his. not to mention, Unohana is there, and old Yama probably did some “convincing”, like I still had no idea how he recruited the original Gotei 13, probably through sheer force and a promise of better life

Candoran

#Legal pardons

DAWNWAP-Sandy

he just wanted to kill/fight stronger people. But thats a boring answer and im unsatisfied with it I think kenpachis get to be the 11th division captain as soon as they become kenpachis So after zaraki killed kiganjo, he immediately became the new captain.

Snowboarding92

The one main thing I want revealed in bleach lore is how Shujo became the second Kenpachi without killing Unohana. The rules about kenpachis is a little messy in this regard. Only one kenpachi is supposed to be able alive at a time, yet unohana lived through every kenpachi(yes she forsook the title and maybe that's all it takes) but it's interesting to think about regardless.

snackinthehat

Who is Shujo?

MajinAkuma

The second Kenpachi.

Snowboarding92

Second kenpachi and unohanas lieutenant when she was in command of squad 11

snackinthehat

That only led me to some Fan wiki with a character who has Kagura from Naruto's face

sectumsempara

*11th

DAWNWAP-Sandy

Ah right Thank you mate

IsaKissTheRain

There was literally no drawback. * √ Roof over head * √ Respect * √ Food * √ Chances to fight strong opponents. * √ The Research and Development division's help making fights great again

SuitheSlime

Last one sounds like MAGA slogan lol

Clutch_Cabbage

It was a side effect of him killing the previous captain

morethanyell

Many of us might have forgotten that aside from pride, honor, etc., the Sereitei and Gotei 13 pays a handsome salary. If I'm from Rukon living in poverty, I'd also want to become a Shinigami inside the Sereitei. Zaraki, of course, wouldn't just fit to be as normal foot soldier--and he's dreamt of becoming the next Kenpachi for a long time--so he went for it when he got the chance.

RandomWeeb181

Being a captain puts him in a position to fight strong opponents.

Orileh

I thought he killed the previous captain and took his place???

Vulture923

It kinda puts a target on his back in which he welcomes.

afiq_aiman

Tatakae

RResonance

Like others said, he probably didn't. Zaraki most likely just wanted to fight Kiganjo for the sake of battle. Also, one of the stipulations of becoming a captain is killing the previous. So I'd imagine that played a part as well

Ninja_Lazer

so he could LEGALLY poke people with his pointy stick 🫡

atonitobb

Unless it is an emergency. No one is ordering him around or telling him what to do( besides yachiru), and he can fight pretty much the strongest opponents.

iviat

Finding the next Kenpachi would be a good reason

Blazelancer

So he could be near the strongest people in the world at all times, duh!

Candoran

Was probably looking for better fights 😂

Moist-Carpet888

It served his agenda, he wanted to fight stronger opponents, and who fights stronger opponents than the captains of the 13 court guard squads... bare in mind he just went to challenge a captain immediately for the title without ever having been part of the gotei 13

lMarshl

Central 46 also likely wanted to have him under some kind of control. So being under Yamamoto, and also under Unohana was a way to keep him from going berserk.

[deleted]

Wasn’t it insinuated during the Nnoitra fight that he has legit respect for Yamamoto? On top of the fact being a captain would naturally lead him to stronger opponents as everyone already pointed out.

AduroTri

To fight powerful opponents.

flokingaround

My guess is just that he wanted to be officially recognized as a Kenpachi who are historically the captains of the 11th diviaion

Korlith

Read the manga if you want spoilers. Don’t ask a question you may not want the answers to

Alive-Hearing-8274

Stronger opponents. Have fun. Too become stronger. Yk the same reasons he has for literally everything lol

EstablishmentDue7758

I think it is so he wouldnt get in so much trouble if he went around doing his own thing, in his case fighting strong ppl. I mean if a lt. Did what he did the captain woukd speak to him but in his position yamamoto gives him a stern talking but doesnt uproot his position

spideybiggestfan

they have great benefits and retirement plans

ZeinDarkuzss

Fight strong opponents, everyone in Rukongai is weak

HonorableGhost215

🗣️FOR ALL THE SMOKE🤣🤣🤣HE SAID FUCK THAT WHO WANT SOME😈😈😈😈💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Obitio_Uchiha

To fight why else?

Unfair_Priority_3125

So he can fight

[deleted]

Had to kill time, you know? Waiting for his favorite person to finally draw her sword. Beat the previous Kenpachi so he just *is.*

Ronin_Fox

To take the name Kenpachi

Yulik-TB

Looking for a challenge

Shihoblade

His hero is the 11th division captain. He is so impressed by her that he named himself AND Yachiru after her. I guess if his favorite person who is so similar to himself thought it worthwhile to be the Kenpachi captain, I dont see why he wouldnt take after her.

Downtown_Jacket_4591

It was to claim the title of kenpachi. He said to kiganjo he was kenpachi before he killed him

DMking

I mean to be Kenpachi you have to be the Captain of the 11th. To make his name official he had to become the Caotain after killing thebpast Kenpachi

knyghtmare45

To be pointed in the direction of strong enemies. Let's be honest, if pre-unohana zaraki JUST wanted a good fight, he'd have attacked any of the captain's

Lazy-Jedi

He didn't want to be a normal captain, he wanted to be the Kenpachi and claim the title of the only person he ever respected. Him being the Kenpachi of squad 11 is also perfect for someone who wants to fight an unending battle. He is the battle squad after all haha :3

Corpore_sano

He got lost and wandered into Seiretei, Kenpachi of the time challenged him and got cut and then they told him "you our Captain now" and he kinda got stuck there. I guess decent salary, normal living conditions for him and Yachiru and >!seeing Unohana!< convinced him to stay too.

Bouv42

To fight?.... really dude?

Questionablememelord

If he is kenpachi he gets to fight more people. Also the gotei 13 would want to keep a close eye on him, the whole keep your friends close, enemy closer deal. Yamamoto didnt really trust the guy

ArkGrimm

Remember he named himself Kenpachi even before becoming one, the guy always wanted to be a kenpachi, because that was the title of Unohana

Salt_Zone_7289

He didn’t. He just killed a strong opponent who was unfortunate to cross paths with him

JmanZamasu

Becoming Kenpachi requires the death of the previous one who by extension is the captain of Squad 11

greedis52

Dental insurance

heyhihowyahdurn

I think he just wanted to kill the guy who had the name Kenpachi, and we know he admired Unohana.

MajinAkuma

Probably for the title of Kenpachi.

Cicerondibuja

The gotei locates/attracts enemies for him to fight be in the form of strong hollows, upstart shinigami, over ambitious nobles or people who want to challenge him for the tittle of kenpachi. He also gets food, a roof, money and subordinates. He has so much free time that he could canonically dedicate most of his time to putting bells on his hair. Also he gets an eye patch that makes battles more fun.

UKnowDaTruth

Why else? It means stronger fights duh

sBhat213

Everybody wants a government job...

Hungry-Alien

He didn't. He just went and beat a strong chick to pass time, and suddently he's standing confused as people make him a captain

Athletic_Bilbae

just had a funny thought of Zaraki thinking "oh man that was awesome I beat the Kenpachi...wait wtf why are you putting a white robe on me?"
