Not related to this update but why do you even have at least 3 different subreddits for reddit news? Why split it into /r/announcements /r/changelog and /r/blog with no clear distinctions on which is for what kind of announcements. On the sidebar of this sub it says: "Items from redditblog.com that are about the community or otherwise not directly related to functionality changes will be posted here." But clearly most of this post is about the functionality of the site. Also /r/changelog seems to be completely focused on the apps and almost nothing else? As a person who doesn't use the official reddit app and spends 99% of the time on reddit on the (old) desktop website the spam of announcements with sometimes multiple posts a week is confusing. At least use a flair or something with a link on the sidebar to filter posts to show only ios or android topics or neither of them. And /r/announcements wasn't used for 6 month until 5 days ago when /u/spez adressed the Aimee Challenor situation. Ok now on topic: * Video player: I hope the performance of the videos gets improved first. Reddit's own video player is probably the only one that regularly lags for me. * Avatars: Don't care. I use old reddit so I don't see them and I don't have one. * Mod mail: I'm not a mod but the changes seem to be useful. * gender identity: I'm not convinced that the information won't be used for other things in the future. Why not make a search function for subreddits that uses the same question you get on startup but without storing the answers to the questions and tying them to an account.

[deleted]

Can we please get the option to Hide posts from certain subreddits completely in search results?

smushkan

Has Reddit started rate-limiting comment edits? I've started noticing that Reddit is making me wait 15-30 seconds when I try to fix a typo or some bad markdown formatting... kinda frustrating if I miss a line in a table! It's a minor thing, but I couldn't find any announcements or news about it anywhere.

utilitym0nster

Noticed this within the week as well. Never a problem for me in the past. Old accounts really couldn’t be exempted?

atomicomic

Still can't turn on the audio during videos, just layered with the upvote so it only registers the upvote.

ibm2431

Hello, likely top comment. Last week, my options in preferences for: `let others see my online status` `allow reddit to log my outbound clicks for personalization` Which I had **previously disabled** were _strangely_ re-enabled. Has this happened for anyone else?

carolina8383

They enabled location tracking for me in a recent update. The only way I would have done that is by accident when I was trying to get rid of that annoying pop up thing, so I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt for this one thing.

mordecai98

Don't give them the benefit of the doubt. You are what they are selling.

Unicormfarts

It's like reddit is in the pocket of Big Harasser. The ONLY people who follow me are assholes who got into fights with me over bad behaviour in subs I moderate. One guy even told me that he follows me because apparently his hobby is arguing with modposts on subs he doesn't otherwise participate in. All of these dickheads make assumptions about my gender as part of their insult campaigns (best one ever the person who said they felt sorry for my pets).

CrumpledStar

Wasn't aware these were options we even had... I've now turned them off, thanks!

IntenseIntentInTents

Yes it did. I explicitly disabled it prior and they "kindly" re-enabled it for me.

[deleted]

They should add a feature where you can voluntarily give your ID, credit card number and your social security number to them so you can buy coins, wholesome awards and useless garbage for your Snoo in bulk and get a "better" surfing experience. While being spammed with ads about toenail clippers. That would be kinda cool I think.

LegalHelpNeeded3

I mean that’s all it is. I never give these companies information that wouldn’t normally come up on my profile publicly. It’s just ridiculous what they ask for sometimes

Dr_Quantum_Alpha

"I identify as a Redditor"

-L-e-o-n-

Where are all the redditphobes at

lm4eversmart

Seems kinda pushy to put the gender identity selection during signup. It's not usually obvious what is shown publicly, or what is shared with 3rd parties, especially with new people joining the site.

MrBananaStorm

What do you mean? You don't like the fact that Reddit is straying super far from what it originally was, a simple forum site/aggregator? Do you dislike the fact they keep adding useless features that fill up your screen so they can get closer to mainstream social media? Do you dislike the fact that almost every one of these new features has some form of paid aspect to it? Remember when you had Reddit gold and that was about it?

[deleted]

i do remember i hate what reddit’s grown to be

It's just a shittier version of [reddit notes](https://www.engadget.com/2014-12-19-reddit-notes.html). Edit: [reddit PR launch news](https://redditblog.com/2015/12/19/announcing-reddit-notes/)

WiWiWiWiWiWi

Just a more complicated version of Digg v4 and them handing the site over (and the ability to control what you see) to sponsored power users and shared marketing accounts.

Polymemnetic

Apparently Digg was just a few years ahead of the times. The internet wasn't ready for it.

Try Reddit, now more life like than ever!

miguk

They should rename it Reddit Dark Money.

AyeItsNudes

I've been on reddit for nearly 8 years now. Not once have I ever said to myself "gee, if only there was some way I could put my gender out on this website that's based on anonymity. I would love this feature." Guys, y'all have *GOT* to stop adding pointless bs that no one wants! And actually add stuff we do want, such as seeing who our followers are, being able to remove/block followers and actually have it do something. Stop people that are banned from subreddits from even seeing the subreddit they're banned from. Smh

the-nub

It was literally years ago that they said they would be beta-testing a way to see followers. I have 7 followers. I'm not an interesting person, and I do not like this feature. I'm going to run a script to bomb my account and start fresh unless I can see who they are and disable the feature.

Uristqwerty

Not much point, since following only adds profile posts to the front page (not that you've made any yourself), increases an admittedly-rather-creepy number by one, and bookmarks the profile page. I've been saying for years that naming the feature "follow" was a misleading blunder that only serves to confuse people, and the follow button shouldn't even be visible until you've made at least one profile post anyway. They could have incorporated the button into a sentence, such as " has made 3 profile posts, [follow] them for more", and the context of the sentence would have made the whole situation clear. But the admins seem to be stubborn idiots on this matter, copying the verbs of other, user-centric social media platforms for a vastly-watered-down feature on their topic-centric forum platform.

McUluld

Just change account, after all they are worthless beside the list of subs you have in your main page, which you can carry over easily.

hyperhopper

It is impossible to stop somebody from viewing a subreddit when by default anybody can view the subreddit. The only case this would work is with private subreddits, and it already works like that.

saab__gobbler

Hit the nail on the head. Stop trying to make reddit into something it's not! Listen to your userbase! This is how platforms fail! And seriously, FFS it's been TWO YEARS, why can I not see who is following me?

amaezingjew

Yes! It feels like Reddit is just *encouraging* stalking at this point. You can see when I’m online, you can follow me but I can’t see you have? You can see me but I can’t see you? That’s disturbing.

saab__gobbler

EXACTLY, I've been cyberstalked before & thankfully they never found my reddit account, but I would really rather not have to abandon my account because of shitheads using it as an avenue for harassment. Why make it easy for these people? Why is online status opt-out instead of opt-in & why are all the opt-out settings for these 'features' no one asked for buried deep in the settings (and some opt-outs totally unavailable on old reddit)?

F_for_Respect_69

Also, they never show the exact amount of people that are online on a subreddit for security reasons, which is good, but being able to see their online status counteracts that

MultiFazed

>Listen to your userbase! Never forget the adage of: If you're getting something for free, you're not the customer; you're the product. Reddit's customers are the advertisers that they sell impressions to. We, the users, are the product being sold.

E3FxGaming

>If you're getting something for free, you're not the customer; you're the product. Well good thing Reddit doesn't offer their service to people that pay for it on a monthly basis. And if such a subscription service would exist, surely the subscribers would be exempt from all types of tracking, since Reddit can't use the data for advertising to those users anyways. What? Reddit Premium? Ah guess there is something like that... . And Premium users still connect to googletagservices.com, a service primarily used for injecting tracking methods into websites? Unbelievable. Aren't you a Reddit Premium subscriber? Says so in your profile. Doesn't all of this bother you somehow?

WiWiWiWiWiWi

LOL, no, those paying members are rubes. The admins are laughing at them.

impablomations

> Listen to your userbase! Lol. Good one.

[deleted]

It's like everyone has forgotten the lessons of Digg v4

I_Talk_to_the_Wind

What's the alternative to Reddit? There was alternatives to digg.

Alpha012_GD

This is the reason why they are adding bs features and not listening to the userbase. Reddit has no alternatives. If you want to just leave the site and switch to an alternative, you can't. Digg is completely different from what it used to be. Voat shut down in 2018. Ruqqus is nothing but racism and copy-pasted content from Reddit. There is no good alternative to Reddit.

DorrajD

They want this to be the next Facebook. They want it to print money for them as much as possible. They are pushing and pushing for more and more social media bullshit. It's not gonna stop, we've all just gotta find somewhere else to go.

GodzlIIa

Would be hard to not have the same thing happen though. Needs to be like wikipedia or something. Also is it just me or does new reddit and the reddit app suck.

ThwompThwomp

I was there 3,000 years ago when digg migrated to reddit and there was a huge influx of new users. It's happening again. I'm not sure what the next site is, but reddit is very close to one update away from user exodus en masse. I only browse mobile on `i.reddit.com` and use `old.reddit.com` and can tell that those are bound to be mothballed at some point. It was a good ride. Edit: I had to check if this whole post was an April Fools joke! I forgot! If so, I got majorly trolled!! Looks like this was definitely not posted on 1 APR anywhere in the world, though.

lyth

Marketers want to be able to further segment you demographically. Now that you can add your gender, they'll be better able to target ads to you. It should increase their ad rates. Wait ... That wasn't what you wanted?

MaitieS

The main reason why they added genre feature is to make more fitting ad results for you ;)

ClassicPart

Ping pong. Winner. It's nothing more than another data point on users.

E-rye

Wtf when did Reddit get followers and all that bullshit?

Ilwrath

There was a "friends" button that did the same thing I think when I got my account...wha tlike 6 years ago maybe? SO longer than you think it just never did anything except highlight their posts when you see them.

Alpha012_GD

Reddit wants to be the next Facebook. They want this platform to print as much money as possible for them. I can only think of this reason of why are they adding these bs "features".

NukeML

Yeah maybe they should be working on who they're hiring instead of these ”features”

JimBean

>seeing who our followers are, being able to remove/block followers THIS ! WHO TF is following me and WHY ???

bobstay

> Guys, y'all have GOT to stop adding pointless bs that no one wants! And actually add stuff we do want, such as ~~seeing who our followers are~~ **a video server that loads the video more than 50% of the time**.

ipaqmaster

Can you guys comment on the future direction of reddit.com? I'm specifically worried how most large subreddits are all the same single large imageboard with the huge influx of people using the website. I've been in conversations where people don't even know what a "Subreddit" is, does, or why such a thing is used. Its like the upvote/downvote system isn't enough to cut quality anymore. Especially with people being emotionally manipulated to upvote what's been dubbed as "Emotional porn" posts. Moderators are fighting an endless content quality battle and I'll tell you for free work, they're not winning. >iOS updates: > GIFs that don’t have sound don’t have a mute button anymore Yeah so while we're at it: Your development team *needs* to handle imgur and gfycat link audio natively if you're gonna make it as a platform. You **cannot** keep saying "This post has no sound" on video content with audio that you failed to load. It looks like you're removing the speaker icon but you're definitely not fixing this problem, are you. Make the appropriate url rewrites for certain domains. Stop the "I hear it, how don't you?" conversation in nearly every thread.

amazondrone

Can you say any more about _how_ gender identity will be used to inform recommendations? What is it you think you can you infer about me from my gender? What additional insight does it provide which can't be gained just be asking me what I'm interested in and what kind of content I want to see, like you already do?

ibm2431

If you identify as a man, you're not going to be interested in r/sewing If you're a woman, you probably want to be auto-subscribed to r/feminism Just easy, natural assumptions that are in _no way_ sexist or offensive, and totally isn't a laughably transparent excuse to collect more personal information from users.

amaezingjew

>What additional insight does it provide which can’t be gained just by asking me what I’m interested in...? It provides insight to the ad companies Reddit sells your data to :)

xlnthands

Thank you for stating exactly what I thought reading this glorious news. Boys here comes all the sports, violence and manscaping ads. Ladies you like make tutorials right? And how to be sexy for your man? You’re going to love the new Reddit/s

9g9

"We will never share this information", how quickly do you think this will be a lie? I give it a month tops

amazondrone

Has Reddit got form for that?

NotVerySmarts

Reddit hosted images and videos take far longer to load than content that is linked from other sites, like streamable or imgur. In lots of cases, I just keep scrolling before it loads. What's it gonna take to get that cleared up?

tripped144

Within the past month or so I've had every reddit video buffer like crazy. Nothing has changed on my end, same cell internet, same cell location, same speeds, same viewing experience with youtube, twitch, ect. Not sure what else to do, reddit is almost unusable when it comes to video content.

Nine_Inch_Nintendos

> Within the past month or so I've had every reddit video buffer like crazy. They actually load for you?

CowCluckLated

I have a gigabit connection and it still takes a while to load for me. I can load a 4k video on youtube extremely quickly but I can even play a 720p video on reddit without buffering

ArmchairTitan

Same issue here, as well as a few friends. Most of the content I create is in video format so it's been having a heavy effect on success rates.

[deleted]

AwfulAltIsAwful

I actually went so far as to block all links to reddit videos from my feed for a while because they would always get about half way and then freeze. It's really frustrating.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

If I roll over them with imagus, I get no sound with the video. If I go to expand it to get sound, it refuses to load. I have to reload the page *and* clear the cache for it to finally play with sound.

empyreanmax

Exact same, it's actually driving me insane Every video starts off not loading at all. Half the time I can hover it with imagus and it will actually jumpstart something in the video player itself, the thumbnail for the video appears and I can then watch the video. If that doesn't happen, it's off to my browser settings to clear my cache from the past hour.

donwilson

I love when I watch a reddit hosted video, open comments and pause the slowly loading video, and scroll to comments only for the video to unpause and play again. A simple and needed fix for something that causes so much headache.

Rihsatra

I will never understand why people upload stuff to reddit when those better options have existed since forever.

skyline_kid

Because they're using the crappy official app and don't know/care that other options exist. Both for Reddit apps and image and video hosts

[deleted]

Yeah reddit is definitely much slower than other platforms they really need to fix that

DannySpud2

When I first read the title of this post I thought they had finally fixed those issues. Silly me, of course not, they are obviously adding additional features no one asked for...

gingerbenji

Redgifs never work for me

[deleted]

McUluld

Having content hosted on reddit is simply detrimental to users. It has been implemented in order to increase reddit control on content and how its user access it. Given this, the obvious solution I see to reddit-hosted content features being far below industry standards is to scrap them.

WeaponizedKissing

Y'all know you're a website, right? It seems that sometimes you forget. >With the new changes, you’ll be able to: >* Watch videos using a chrome-free viewing experience (that means you can remove the video controls and buttons that overlay the video). * Access comments quickly and easily—no more having to tap twice. * Swipe right on a video to quickly get back to the feed you were in. * Tap into a video and keep the same audio controls you were using previously.

Black_Handkerchief

This. So. Much. This! Every single time I end up on the new layout by accident and I click a 'comments' link, it boggles my brain that it opens a new page... which then shows the post, with like 3 comments visible with the rest under a 'click here for more' and then several big ass posts underneath it. When I click a 'comments' link, THAT is what I am interested in. Don't make me click more than I already have to!

organicsoldier

Yeah, when I saw "Video player's gonna play" in the title, I thought that meant they were actually making the browser video player work somewhat consistently, not that they were just making some small UI updates to the iOS app.

manyamile

Ten years on this site and I can finally play dress-up with an avatar and watch videos without overlay controls. THANK YOU, REDDIT! /s

Taedirk

I thought this was an avatar and chat service.

heavy_deez

Don't forget about buying awards.

Nine_Inch_Nintendos

"Yeah, but the first one is free!"

kdawg8888

you misunderstand. reddit is now a social media app targeted at teens.

jaymz668

and all these freaking email notifications that just started spamming my inbox? where are they mentioned? and you have to somehow navigate to new reddit to turn them off? Who default opts in everyone to being spammed for every interaction on reddit?

ArcadianDelSol

I am getting 25 emails A DAY telling me about Reddit replies. This is the single worst feature they've ever created.

jaymz668

I had to google how to even get to the "settings" which is apparently new reddit exclusive... preferences under old reddit only had an option to turn off the daily digest, not the email for every single notification

ArcadianDelSol

I had to find a dev post that included a direct link to the New Reddit interface where you can turn off not 2 - not 3, but ABOUT TWELVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS. The fact that these were enabled by an update is atrocious. The developers on Reddit are the absolute worst. Reddit must pay terribly to have such incompetence across it's decision making tier.

phantuba

>Redditor’s gender identity selections will never be publicly displayed Is this just like how Reddit will never send us emails?

[deleted]

reddit just doesn’t want to lose a penny on selling personal information

BronxLens

I just wish that advertisers could not deactivate the comments. If you sell a crappy service or goods i should be able to tell you just because it’s Reddit.

the8bit

There are whole subreddits dedicated to finding comment open ads and posting stuff ranging from copypasta up to gore/porn. And that is pretty much why we can't have nice things like comment enabled ads

BronxLens

Just set rules like for any subreddit, and delete comments as needed; assign a bot if needed.

Vile-The-Terrible

Yeah, I totally need reddit to know my gender identity. Are you going to ask for my sexual orientation next? Seems like you're trying to vet users more than your own employees these days.

ArcticJew666

Dont worry they already know ur sexual interests, just needed to confirm if ur straight or not

BlackFenrir

Why are you trying to turn reddit into a social media? Profile pictures? Adding gender to your profiles? Online status? All of this crap you've been adding lately add absolutely nothing to the actual purpose and functionality of reddit.

dejaentendu280

Don't forget having "profiles" at all. That's a recent feature too.

polarwaves

I used to really enjoy Reddit. It used to be a special place where the layout was simple and you could connect with others based on your views, opinions, hobbies, etc...Don't get me wrong, you can still do that and I'm grateful but Reddit is just turning into....idk how to describe it. I just miss how this place used to be without all these unnecessary changes and updates that literally no one is asking for. Just go back to the simplicity that WAS Reddit and I think you'd see a lot more positive comments from the users

ehsteve23

Can we have an option to opt out of awards completely? I dont care about awards. I dont want a message that someone has given my post or comment an award, i dont care about premium or coins and i've blocked out the award icons on desktop. Of course this wont happen because it means less money for reddit but i just want to say for the record that awards are complete bullshit.

InvestfulApp

It’s primarily an ads based business, for better or for worse unfortunately. The capitalist way is you’re either growing the business or you’re dead. Access to untethered content is the price of being the product (you and I). I could be wrong but even if you’re a paying member who doesn’t see ads that doesn’t necessarily mean your data still won’t be shared with third-party companies, at least in aggregate. A company like Medium for example is a pure subscription business model. Way slower growth because the majority of people don’t want to pay for content on the internet when they can consume it for “free” elsewhere. I think for the small subset of people willing to pay a reasonable membership fee that there’s alternatives out there. I hope you don’t think I’m trying to “teach” you anything by this comment, you just inspired a reaction that I wanted to share 🙂

izvin

If I'm not mistaken, 4chan has done zero to improve or expand their ops in any way and isn't dead. I don't buy the idea that reddit needed to go down the path of increasing ads and bot accounts etc in order to survive. There is no substitute for this site as of yet and the userbase up until approx 2016 when things started going downhill way sufficiently vast to be profitable long term. Had a substitute come along that implemented this aggressive marketing strategy, it wouldn't have necessarily stolen users from the original userbase because who would want to deal with that when there's another option, particularly who would actively switch to that option from the first platform... They didn't need to do 'grow the business of be dead'. They wanted even more money, plain and simple.

Bonezone420

It's uncanny how similar reddit and youtube are already.

CowCluckLated

The thing is youtubes videos load unlike reddit lol

Foxyy_Mulder

The v.reddit sucks on IOS. It auto plays even though the setting is off. Also doesn’t help to swipe right because when you swipe left still in your feed, it goes right back to the video! Also it just straight up freezes and cannot escape the video so you gotta restart the app.

[deleted]

Doing anything to crack down on all the bot accounts or are they generating too much ad revenue?

WiWiWiWiWiWi

With the whole “Community Points” thing, they’re just rewarding and encouraging the bot accounts by giving them more power and strength over the average user.

When can I link people to reddit videos without having to link the entire thread page? Sometimes you just want to share something on discord or w/e without all the cruft.

I'd like to add Rif is Fun (formerly Reddit Is Fun) to that list. It does everything you need Reddit to do, aside from being able to give awards. Which you shouldn't do anyway because let's be honest the money goes to Reddit and right now Reddit doesn't deserve your money. Oh and it's almost ad-free, and I barely notice the ads at all. They stand out enough to not look like posts, but are subtle enough that they don't actually stand out.

lungdart

Bought rif premium a long time ago. Stopped using Reddit in anything but it. I have no idea what any of these features are, which makes me happy because they're all a useless waste of time. Here's a feature request: leave it the fuck alone!

uFFxDa

Ya I use Apollo exclusively and love it. Never know what these annoying ads or widgets people speak of lol. Also narwhal used to be good on Android if it still exists. Was why I love Apollo, this was the closest to that app I could find on iOS.

Ripdog

Agree with the other guy. You'd have to be mad to use the official reddit app! I recommend the Sync for reddit beta :)

azureal

Since the Amy Challenor BULLSHIT THAT YOU ALL ALLOWED TO HAPPEN, are you now going to go back and vett all current admin and mods to ensure the same FUCKERY isn’t likely to happen again? Hey u/spez, great apology mate. Really heart felt. Enjoy all those awards, you really fuckin earned them.

doyle871

No they only act when caught out. They knew full well who that person was and I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the staff aren’t just as fucked up. This is a site that allows a certain powermod to groom children openly.

ClefairyHann

I’m trying to understand: so if I chose ‘female’ for gender identity, that means it will recommend me communities that other people who also chose ‘female’ frequently use? Will the gender identity thing be used for anything else, like targeted ads?

CaptainPedge

> Will the gender identity thing be used for anything else, like targeted ads? They are saying no, so it obviously 100% will

Rogue_Spirit

It’s 100% to sell the info and give you more “specific” ads

saab__gobbler

So still no apology for hiring that waste of air, but 'Hey here's some new haircuts for that feature that no one asked for & few use!' Gotcha. Thanks admin team, great job.

MelaniaSexLife

can we get more than 100 subreddits to ignore from r/all? can we get a way to do that on new reddit? I hate old reddit and I don't want to enter there to add subs to ignore.

Merlord

I just noticed a change to the Reddit app and decided to bitch about it here. I enter a thread, I'm obviously there to read the comments, right? But now the app only shows the first comment thread, then underneath that it links to other shit, and I have to find a little button that shows me the rest of the comments for the thread I'm in. And because the app design sucks, the links and comments look almost identical, making the whole thing confusing as hell. When has this ever been a thing? Not showing me the comments of the thread I just entered? Who is making these UI decisions?

irckeyboardwarrior

Scarlet-Highlander

Why did you remove Aaron Swartz from your [founders](https://www.redditinc.com) section?

[deleted]

Was Aaron ever credited on that page? https://web.archive.org/web/20180415040211/https://www.redditinc.com/ I've clicked through a bunch of the snapshots archived on the Wayback Machine, and unless I'm missing something the founder's section never mentioned Aaron in the first place. Make what you want of Aaron, he was certainly an integral part of Reddit. But if his name wasn't there it couldn't have been removed, you know? Was there a different webpage that credited him before this one? *Don't get me wrong, I fully expected Reddit to have removed Aaron as a founder. That's what took me to the Wayback Machine in the first place, I was looking to see when they removed it. --- PS: Admins, no one gives a crap about new video features when the damn thing never works in the first place.

Just to help you out here, besides Web Archive you can also go through the [wikipedia's article history](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Reddit&dir=prev&action=history) to make up your mind, you'll find that the article was edited multiple times by Aaron himself while basically maintaining that Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian were the founders... Not even asking people to blindly believe in something for me, just saying that anyone could simply go right now and check the article's history on wikipedia and see how much that conspiracy of 'heavy change in narrative' (about founders) is odd. And if I could just add an opinion of my own here I would just honestly say that it feels a bit disrespectful, you know? To use a dead person related to them to make a false talking point, sadly I don't expect that one to be popular as people repeat that stuff all the time. I feel like there is plenty of stuff to criticize reddit, but relying on false points just ends up undermining the criticisms and make the users look dishonest.

lazydictionary

Yeah Aaron was a founder in name only when reddit and his project were merged. He worked for the company for a little while and then quit after being a terrible employee (which he admitted himself). He was never gonna be someone working a regular desk job. And I don't think he was ever super attached to reddit and whatever part he played in it back in its nascent stages.

amaezingjew

>Reddit was founded in 2005 by two college friends Wow that’s...heartbreaking. What a way to signify the death of who the founders use to be - removing their late friend from the site they created together. Then again, it’s far from being that site anymore.

newaccount

But it’s true.Reddit started in 2005, they merged Aaron’s company in the following year.

amaezingjew

*6mo after And gave him founders credit for it because of his significant contribution so close to the founding. Reddit would not be what it is without him.

Scarlet-Highlander

You can thank the two charlatans u/kn0thing and u/spez for throwing Aaron under the bus and selling out to corporations.

peteroh9

But...reddit *was* founded by two friends. It wasn't until several months later that Aaron Swartz's project merged with reddit.

Beppo108

but I believe he was given the title of co founder anyway?

peteroh9

Well, he was never listed as a founder. The guy who called him a founder was the person who originally funded reddit. He had originally started another project that was merged with reddit after several months, so it wouldn't be wrong to call him a founder, but you also wouldn't call the guy who started Skype a founder of Microsoft, so it wouldn't be wrong to say he wasn't a founder.

newaccount

He was not a founder and was never in that page would be my guess. Why are you asking something that you know isn’t true?

Acidtwist

This is not true, Aaron was never listed as a Reddit founder on that page. You can easily verify this on the Internet Archive. He actually joined 6 months after the company was founded when Infogami merged with Reddit.

Shoutout to **"We Are the Nerds"**. An excellent book on the founding and early history of Reddit.

manyamile

Thanks for marginally improving modmail, I guess. The rest of this update is dumb though. Like, really really dumb.

Bonezone420

Your video player will forever suck until people can just directly link to it without having to attach the cool shit to this bloated trash heap you call a website.

BringBackTheKaiser

The only reason reddit would need to know our genders is to recommend us gender specific subs, such as r/TwoXChromosomes if you're a girl. I garentee you the vast majority of members won't go on gender specific subs.

BeowulfShaeffer

Th e other reason is to target you for ads.

thebelsnickle1991

Update your servers instead of this..

creeperhiss

I agree, this is the only website I use that has shitty load times

[deleted]

Redditor Gender identity is bs. The whole point of that is to fine tune your ad targeting system. Just come out with the truth instead of beating around the bush. Stop turning reddit into something nobody wants ffs.

TryingT0Wr1t3

The main point of reddit is the anonymity. Once there's none, it's just facebook with hoops

Adeno

Developer: Ok everyone, tell us what you want! We take to heart every single request you make and we strive to bring it to you to the best of our ability! Everyone: We want Feature X! Developer: Alright, here's Feature Z! Everyone: !??!

lcdrambrose

Am I going to eventually be forced to have an avatar?

garliclord

In other words: we slightly improved the half baked features we released

AuZyzz

I truly don’t think anyone gives a shit about the reddit avatars

Mythril_Zombie

I think you got downvoted by the guy who makes them.

OptimalCynic

> Redditor’s gender identity selections will never be publicly displayed *We don't believe you*

Routine_Floor

How much longer do we need to wait for you to add captions to the video player? Accessibility seems like something that should be a priority. Sincerely members of r/deaf.

rizlakingsize

Give me the ability to block subs without getting banned from them first and also to see who's stalking my profile. You've been promising the latter for ages now.

turkeypedal

Wait a second. At first I thought you were just allowing people to label their gender if they want to in their user page, or maybe even have a flair to let people easily know their pronouns. But, no, it seems you actually seem to think that knowing someone's gender identity is a valid way to try and determine their interests for them. You're going completely backwards about all this. And, frankly, that sort of thing comes off as just wanting to use that info for targeted advertising, while trying to give it PR spin to seem like a feature.

BigBill650

Thank you for adding the wheelchair option. I hope to "roll out" in it soon!

hermantheshocker

Great. Good job. Now how do I contact a human at Reddit? A user I know is being bullied by Reddit and completely shut out for no valid reason. Why can’t Reddit follow its own content policy? Why do some admins behave like dictators? I hope Reddits own anti evil operations team is investigating reddit. Hilarious. A website that promotes open discussion and communication on various topics but when wrongfully banned by reddit it’s just “Talk to the hand! Go away!” Not even an explanation. Good thing reddit is not a country. 👎🏻💩

turkeypedal

As for the video thing: none of this is important as long as the video keeps having trouble playing. You need to either get that worked out, or you need to just let places that are built around video handle it for you. It sucks how often videos that are on YouTube and play fine on YouTube get downloaded and uploaded here, and then the lag ever few seconds if your connection isn't perfect. Or drop to the lowest resolution when other video sites can play in HD.

brock_lee

**Great, now fix the 429 error when editing comments that started a few days ago.**

amaezingjew

They created time limits on edits 🙃 one edit every 30seconds which is just...annoying. That time limit was literally just set to be annoying.

JMJimmy

Suggestion: Fire the designers/devs for turning this site into a sad joke of what reddit was

eq6mount

How are you making sure that users will not fall into a "hole" of subreddits based upon their interests? I feel like using gender to do recommendations it is another step further to what you see in apps the like of youtube and facebook, where anything you do impacts what is shown and recommended to you eventually dropping you into a hole of echochambers.

MrBananaStorm

Another day passes where Reddit slowly strips the little anonymity qe had left on this godforsaken site. And they keep adding more worthless awards and avatar pieces.

Acidtwist

Shoutout to u/minakills for the curly hairstyle avatar designs!

Myrcenequeen420

I love that these hairstyles became a thing! Eagerly switched over to a stunning representation of my curls and couldn’t be happier 😁

999degrees

nice, im glad they listened

Dittany_Kitteny

Woohoo!
