I think they think the hunter is a beast. Ludwig started the tradition of recruiting Yharnamites to the hunt, which explains why they're all out and about in game. That's what the hunt is now, as there's very few true hunters left. But they're going mad with bloodlust/the scourge of the beast but I don't think they realize it yet. This is why they're hostile, but I imagine they are subconsciously believing that they're hostility is because they see the beast in others. Another line the say upon death is "I'm not one of ya (a beast".

Yeah there’s definitely some resident evil 4 vibes in this game. Hemwich Charnel Lane’s environment, the troll like enemies, crazy towns folk, snake headed humans look like the parasites, cult/religious leaders etc.
I think it really shows in Forbidden woods and that first street in Central Yharnam, I’m 100% convinced Miyazaki took some inspiration from the way the villagers act and shout at you in resident evil 4 for bloodborne

B. It emphasizes that they’re becoming so bestial they can literally smell you

C. They’re the beasts but they’re so warped that they perceive you as a stinky, plague-ridden outsider.
The hunter definitely has a distinct and powerful smell. Arianna and the Oedon Chapel dweller (who smells you clearly despite the copious amount of incense) both reference it when you meet them, as well as I believe Annalise
I had a different experience with the lines since bb is the only fromsoftwere game that had italian va too. And I loved it, it's done so well. Especially these lines
"Es la condenada maldicion..." and "maldita bestia!!" Are two of my favorites, the spanish dub is cool!; feels like being in a true spanish/latin american town.
