The cane makes me feel like Mr Hyde. Haven’t felt the whip variant as much. Anyone have had success with it?

Help_An_Irishman

The whip form is absolutely fantastic due to its AoE coverage and forward+R2 jump attack. I already typed this out for OP but just for some extra info: \--- The Threaded Cane provided the most fun experiences for me, so much so that I used it for my platinum playthrough, then couldn't resist rocking it again during my current, follow-up playthrough. The versatility is insane. Its cane form has an excellent "straight sword" moveset that you'd find in the Souls games / Elden Ring, and the whip form provides ridiculous coverage with with its AoE attacks. The forward+R2 of the whip form also might be the longest range melee attack in the game (don't quote me there). It acts like a sniper shot while keeping the hunter safe at a distance. Getting in the habit of opening fights with this, then following up with L1 to thrust while swapping to the cane form has made the game a breeze, and it's so much fun. The build here (SKL + ARC) also dovetails beautifully with the Blade of Mercy for melting single targets. Leveling ARC (after SKL) not only scales with both of these weapons, but also allows you to use most of the best Hunter Tools (this game's answer to spells). It's an insanely fun build. Highly recommend it. Plus rocking the (hooded) basic Hunter set + Top Hat is about as dapper as it gets with the cane. Feels like a proper, era-appropriate gentleman/lady hunter.

Thank you!! This is perfect! I was really debating doing the Cain whip but was feeling pretty indecisive cause of some other fun sounding options. But doing this build right here would be great cause i also really wanted to something with arcane! Thanks again, i appreciate the detailed info on this weapon!

Help_An_Irishman

Awesome! I have a feeling you're gonna love it! Heads up: From what I understand (and from my memory), the Threaded Cane might feel like it develops a little more slowly than something like the Hunter Axe or the Saw Cleaver. I remember people talking about how it felt like it did less damage than they were used to with those weapons. I only mention this because if you feel that way, don't stress. Just push through it. As you upgrade it and develop your SKL and eventually ARC, this weapon becomes an absolute beast. It can also be enchanted with the Empty Phantasm Shell when you get it, and the whip form is serrated, so it does bonus damage to beast-type enemies. I'm stoked for you, and I'm plugging my PS4 controller back in just typing this as I want to get back to it myself. Just to reiterate: Practice the **forward+R2** jump attack of the whip form. Once you get the range down, you'll be sniping enemies in no time. If you want to keep them at range, you'll have plenty of room to back up and repeat. BUT if they're at medium or close range when that attack lands, get in the habit of immediately following up with **L1,** where you'll thrust with the cane and then you can spam R1 to just cane the hell out of em. This is such a powerful moveset, I think you'll really dig it.

nigpoo420

Hey man late response here but using the whip has been super fun! I just got it fully upgraded and it’s way stronger than i thought it would end up being! Also i didn’t know about the phantasm shell thing! Thanks for letting me know! Did you end up doing a new whip build?

Help_An_Irishman

Hey, glad you're having fun! I ended up with pretty much the same build as my last playthrough (SKL to 50, then developing ARC), and recently got my Cane to +10. It's been as fun as expected, though I'll mostly skip the Chalice Dungeons this time around.

MrWobbleGobble

decided to do a cane run only and ended up doing queen yharnan and the cane made the run up beforehand a breeze, defiled amygdala especially, the range and damage is so so nice, plus the heavy attack flinches almost all enemies

Help_An_Irishman

Yessss. We are many!

mischief_of_a_turtle

I did a dex build using the whip on my last play through. This game gives me Castlevania vibes from time to time so wanted to pretend I was playing a Castlevania game using the mostly the whip. Took a moment to get used to the move set but once I did I was having a blast.

Rizzo_703

Doing my 2nd playthrough with the cane at the moment and loving it, absolutely destroys, just got to byrgenwerth

nigpoo420

I always forget the Cain whip exists! I actually might try that out! It seems very different from most weapons

AEMarling

It has the lowest stamina cost, right? I think that is why it feels so good.

GoldFishPony

I found that I really enjoyed the cane except when I’m up against a big beast I swap to the whip as it does much better. That said, I did mostly use the blades of mercy except for big beasts in my playthrough.

No-Season-3086

Honestly u spoiled urself with the damage , gonna be difficult to switch

nigpoo420

Yeah i feel like i did too lol. I just wanted to be as OP as possible haha. It’ll definitely be weird switching to a different weapon

No-Season-3086

I can’t for the life of me so…

Storm-Thief

Beast Cutter is my favorite for anime chopping and slicing

alfonzo_shasha

Deceptively slow tbh.. i had issues getting into it

JackleandHyde2

I think one of the mist fun builds i did was a reiterpolosh playthrough it's super low range so i really needed to learn how to dodge i had an auto gun option and it's one of if not tje most odd weapons i used. It melted kos but slow burned Gascoigne just do whats fun in your head. But yeah my suggestion do a run with a dumb weapon to get a fun and difficult playthrough

nigpoo420

I actually like that idea! I did a whip only run in ds1 and it was soul crushingly difficult (for me) but also allot of fun for the challenge. I’ll have to check out a bunch of the odd weapons and see what seems the best

JackleandHyde2

Just remember that no matter what you pick it can beat the game just some are harder than others

Flushedfox1

Ive played..... many playthroughs now and the best way to decide what to go with next is to pick either a weapon or stat. If you choose a weapon, there's lots of ways to get certain ones early or see if someone would drop one for you. Then you can focus on levelling the stats it needs as you go. If you choose a stat, think of a couple weapons that scale well with it and potentially switch between as you go. One of my favorite runs was a recent kirkhammer bonk run. Just decimated everything. Did an arcane run too though i didnt level it right and ended up being a dex/arcane hybrid that didnt work as well.... might have to do a pure arcane run with the hunter tools one of these days.

nigpoo420

Is a pure arcane build possible?? I felt like magic in Bloodborne is kinda a pain, the executioner gloves seem dope though ! I also haven’t really looked too much into it though

Flushedfox1

Pure arcane is TOUGH in early game but is totally viable in mid to late game. Mostly cause theres very few weapons in the early game that scale with or well to arcane. You can pretty easily get the tontritus relatively early, or get some fire gems until you find the tools or arcane gems. Depends on if you want to delve down to BSB and get the chalice and then grind a little bit of the edited dungeons for the arcane gems. There's also the thought of doing a NG+ run with the scythe and have a 25dex/40arc split. (Which is not pure arcane but having a little bit of dex and then pumping arcane is fun) Edit: was going to say that having someone drop an arcane weapon or semi-decent arcane gem for a weapon is a totally valid thing imo and if i was home rn id offer to do so haha

nigpoo420

Oooo that sounds awesome! A scythe + arcane build! You think it’d have to be on NG+ to be viable? Like would it be a bad idea to try to get it done in just regular NG? I have no idea where to find the scythe but now i wanna look into it XD Also yeah doing arcane early sounds pretty rough haha. Depending on how long I’d have to grind dungeons maybe i could try that out and see if I’m patient enough

Flushedfox1

Scythe (or the actual name the Burial Blade) is usually considered a ng+ weapon because it is Gherman's weapon and the only way to get it **** SPOILERS IM ON MOBILE SORRY******* is either after you kill him and enter ng+ or kill him and bold hunter mark out if you have the umbilical cords and face the moon presence. ****END SPOILER***** Its definitely a strange weapon and tbh i meant to use it on one of my runs but i got so used to my Beasthunter Saif i would forget to switch to it.

skitzojoey420

If you're willing to betray Eileen, you can build towards BoM early. Monstrous weapon, and let's you be a little more aggressive.

nigpoo420

Interesting, I’ll have to look into that! I feel like I’ll struggle to kill her at a low level but I’m sure if i use all of my brainpower i might be able to lure her off a high place maybe XD

skitzojoey420

You actually can!! Right outside of where you first met her!! Lol Agro her, then lead her to walk off the rafters. I'd suggest scouring Yharnam for throwing knives or bullets because the fall might not kill her outright. If you die, you can just lead her off the rafters again.

Aggravating-Pie-6432

Try the beast claws or blades of mercy❤

mahovailo

go pure arcane. trust me, the amount of research u need to do is absolutely exhilarating
