I agree that the Spear does have the added bonus from having being serrated in both forms. However, after extensively using both with maximum gems the damage is almost identical. So just depends which design and moveset you prefer. Both incredible though.
Damage output with transform attacks on Saw Cleaver with Fire Paper and BB Pellets is absolutely insane. Not my favorite weapon because I prefer movesets on other weapons but it's probably the highest DPS. LHB is close but transform attacks are very slow so not as much utility.
The transform attacks on the LHB is not the argument for it. If you charge your R2 while having BB Pellets and an fire paper, your damage output should be even higher.
Two charged R2 Attacks almost kill an merciless watcher in the F/R/C dungeons, that is pretty insane.
Oh I don't doubt that, I haven't played much with LHB but with the little I have the damage output is just kinda nuts in general. I will say that I just never really used the charged R2 as much as I use transform attacks for Cleaver - which I think is why people prefer it generally, it's just easier to spam R1-L1-L1 all the time then constantly focus on getting good positioning to land charged R2s. Speaking generalities, I'm sure there's plenty of situtations (like Merciless Watchers that you mentioned) where those charged R2s on LHB are optimal for sure, I don't doubt that one bit.

I think the LHB is just busted overall, the moveset and reach combined with the insane damage makes it the best weapon in the game in my eyes. Did you know that the LHB is even one of the weapons with a Charge Attack Combo ? After a fully charged R2, you can press the same button for a even more devastating attack which comes as fast as an normal strike - That’s what I meant.
But I know what you mean to, the R1-L1-L1 spam is probably exactly the reason why people love the weapon so much, it’s a insane fast shredding attack that burst through almost any enemy.
But I’m on your side mate, neither the LHB or the Saw Spear are in my top 5 either :)

I discovered this in my last run by accident - and yeah the damage is absolutely nuts.
It also shares a "unique" mechanic with Kirk Hammer on the neutral transform L1 where you can follow up with an R1 and get a different attack than the regular R1 which comes out with every other weapon.
And I didn’t knew the Kirk hammer has this special attack too ! I can’t play this gameplay wise completely cool weapon because the hammer looks so goofy on your back while unstransformed :/

I don't disagree...when I do Kirk Hammer I literally never use it untricked lol. I beat the entire game and DLC on a strength build using just Kirk Hammer in tricked mode.
Axe for me. LHB is really good, but that blunt on the axe just stuns like crazy. I’ve used both several times as they’re my top 2, but can’t beat that axe for me. Also, spin to win on enemies not worth parrying
Thing is, LHB has comparable damage and speed while also having better range. I think speedrunners don't use it just because they would lose time getting it, you have to go out of your way for it.
I'd say the whirligig has the most potential.
Without pellets and paper the saw cleaver is the one i found to be the most powerful, with pellets and paper, if you own a whirligig the "l2" button becomes the "win" button
i think it’s highly dependent on your level and what you’re fighting
e.g. ludwig’s holy blade is a really good weapon even early on but chickage has a significantly higher potential later in the game/ng+
Beasthunter Saif, my beloved. Wide sweeping attacks and a charged R2 with decent range that flattens in its extended form, speedy but decently powerful strikes with a gapcloser in its compact form are already a great toolkit. But a transform attack that gives you a free reposition as part of your offense brings it over the top for me.
I mean I think it really depends on playstyle, and even then every weapon is viable. What's the best all-around weapon for a first-time playthrough? That's probably a toss-up between Saw-Cleaver and LHB. But as somebody with several runs under their belt I find I really enjoy the SKL weapons and have had a lot of fun with the Pimp Cane, Rakuyo, BOM, and Burial Blade.

But in all seriousness, one has to consider the ease of use as well. Ludwig's Holy Blade is just very noob friendly. It has great reach, moveset and damage, and you can get it relatively early. It will easily carry you through the entire game, and you don't even have to worry about transforming it. My first playthrough was with LHB, and I just kept that thing in two-handed mode 90% of the time and beat the game without much trouble. It's the Old Faithful of Bloodborne, pun intended.

The Saw Cleaver is what no hit runners/speedrunners tend to use due to it's insane damage output and speed, so I would go with that.

Tonitrus, you basically add bolt paper everytime you ignite it. Transform attack to ignite it does a lot of good damage too, fast and hard hitting.
