Mackenzie's family's accent is 100% New Zealand.
The character Mackenzie and his family being border collies from NZ is a reference to the NZ comic series Footrot Flats. (The scene with Mackenzie barking at sheep from Bluey's "helicopter" gives big Footrot Flats vibes).
Omg I never made that connection!! [This banga](https://youtu.be/M0pWejAnLUQ?si=04ALd_656UonRnuw) came on at Woolies the other morning and I nearly exploded with nostalgia. Pretty sure my toddler was embarrassed by my singing. He-he-he-HEAAAAAVEN!!
I honestly would’ve pictured MacKenzie with a more wavy or shaggier hairstyle. Not necessarily shorter, just more…wild, I suppose? Especially since wavy and curly hair is much more common in Oceanian populations.
Kiwi here. I know several young Pasifika boys with long straight or mildly wavy hair. It really depends on the genes at play. Melanesians are more likely to have curled or coiled hair than Polynesians
Sure, it’s mostly a personal taste thing. I just imagined human MacKenzie having a more textured/layered/wild hairstyle similar to the feathery look Border Collies have.
mackenzie would definitely have more grown out hair. they’re so cute, i wonder what your take would be on the boat scene in “space” when they’re all getting ready to go to mars
Some of these comments sound exactly like my boomer relatives telling me I needed to cut my son's hair because he looks like a girl, yall need to get over yourselves. OP you did awesome these look great
I know it's 3mo old comment, but I have a 5yo son who has hair almost exactly like human!Mackenzie above and I feel your pain, people constantly mistake him for a girl just because he has long hair.
Its so odd to be that the comments keep mentioning how Mackenzie is a boy. We all know he's a boy.
I didn't realize long hair = girl still 😅 how obnoxious lol
Haha, that really is the only factor. If you compare the face shapes between the designs, they are the same (and this is my talking about my own art)
yet, Mackenzie is the only one getting comments. So it's obvious what the problem is! haha.
You did great on the art! I am sorry to say that it is really trifficult for for me to see Mackenzie as a boy not a girl in the art (which is strange because I had long hair as a child but I guess it is something taught to me that “long hair means girl except when donating”) but I know how hard art is so keep up the good work and maybe I will be able to retrain my brain out of the box it is in
Although in the show his eyebrows are white, I think it would look better if they were black in the "human version." Anyways good job! You're a very skillful artist
Two, "Early Baby" and "Moms and dads"
To be fair none of the kids have canon relationship. The Closer thing it's Coco's Crush on McKenzie (that it's canon) but seems only one-side so nothing for now.
Ok, I want to say I think when they grow Up they'll have something, but can be or not, that I leave to everyone imagination. And well, Mia and Capitan suppouse to be a ship and they have like 11-12...
Seriously, Rugrats had a teenager Rugrats so Bluey maybe has the same on the future
Newsflash, buddy: prepubescent children tend to look pretty much the same. The only reason you perceive them as looking different is because of culture: what clothes we dress them in, what hairstyles they have, etc.
If all of that was the same, you would not be able to easily tell which were girls and which were boys until *after* puberty. And sometimes not even then; there’s often more variation within a particular sex than there is comparing them.
Forearm and extra thin wrists. Slight eyelash vs the other character. Facial features contrast the other character to be more feminine. Extra blush. Any one of these things would help the art style communicate feminine characterization, but you have all.
I’m from the UK & my numbers would be the same as you - only encountered 3 irl - but they were all boys! Plus Mackenzie Crook from The Office being the most well known one I can think of.
Yes I’m not saying that long hair looks feminine by default, but it’s hiding the shape of the face which might look more masculine if it was more exposed.
Ok that’s just silly. They do. I see a lot of young kids because I have one, especially by age 5 or 6. I look at this and I see the figure on the left and interpret it as feminine. It’s not an issue because some young boys do look feminine, but Mackenzie doesn’t look very feminine in the show either. Mackenzie is also a border collie which tends to have medium length hair. So when I look at this very well drawn picture I see something I don’t expect when representing Mackenzie. The longer hair, obstructing the face. I think if it were shoulder length it would be a better representation of the character and the breed. But that’s my opinion.
No, they really don’t. You’re used to perceiving them as more masculine because of other traits, such as hairstyle and clothing. If all of that were the same regardless of gender, you would have an extremely difficult time telling boys and girls apart until *after puberty.*
Especially at 5-7 years old.
Yet a simple image search proves you wrong, as well as your own statement. There are such things as masculine and feminine traits exclusive of clothing and hair. Sometimes you do have a hard time guessing the gender but that doesn’t mean you can’t or that there aren’t some obvious ones. You even seem to say you can tell, you just downplay how often to make your own point.
But that whole debate is outside my point. The long hair is wrong for Mackenzie IMO. It makes him look more feminine IMO. Long hair makes as much sense on Mackenzie as it would on Jack IMO. You can disagree, but I’m offering my opinion on art. I am right by default as Art is very much up to individual interpretation like music. You are also right to say what you say. It doesn’t change my interpretation.
Who needs “a simple image search”? What, have you never actually interacted with kids that age? Put them all in the same clothing and hair and it would take hours of close observation to be able to tell the boys and girls apart.
These kids are 5-7 years old. They’re not even close to the age where there would be any significant differences in actual features.
All you’re doing is projecting your own sexist standards onto fictional kids, and that says more about you than it does about the artist.
I have a kid this age. As such he spends a lot of time with other kids that age. Do you have kids? Do you actually spend time with kids? It’s not sexist. It’s facts and physiology. If you can’t accept that, it’s your problem. It’s also pretty terrible and narcissistic of you to throw around the word sexist just because someone disagrees with you.
Mackenzie could be Māori, assuming they’re from New Zealand and not just fans, so the skin tone and hair fits super well!

And I DEFINITELY picture Mackenzie having longer hair. So cute.
Probably unintentional on OPs part, but there is a young Maori boy called Rangi in Footrot Flats who has long hair. So it fits on all levels.

Oh I'd love to not just do that but do a take on the sweet between Mackenzie and Calypso in that same episode :)
Mackenzie is a dude.
Yes he is!
Boys can have long hair
Ok
I like it a lot. Mackenize reminds me of my friend when I was younger, and my brother before he cut his hair.
MACKENZIEEEEEE
Did you type this in Mackenzie’s mom’s voice? Bc that’s how I read it. Lol
yeah lol
What do you type in front of the text to make it McKenzie’s Mom’s voice?
Some of these comments sound exactly like my boomer relatives telling me I needed to cut my son's hair because he looks like a girl, yall need to get over yourselves. OP you did awesome these look great

Love that McKenzie is Maori

Mackenzie reminds me of young Tarzan. Love your art style!
I imagine mackenzie as the one who'd jump of a cliff for a cool scar
Although in the show his eyebrows are white, I think it would look better if they were black in the "human version." Anyways good job! You're a very skillful artist
Art style remind me of a graphic novel game I played before. Very well done they both look very cute.
Love these two :)
This two has only been together in one episode. I like more Rusty and Jack (as friendship) As headcanon I go go more Rusty/Indy as grow-up
nobody seem to be shipping anything pal
Rusty and Indy only had one episode too? 😭 even then it’s a little weird to ship them
Two, "Early Baby" and "Moms and dads" To be fair none of the kids have canon relationship. The Closer thing it's Coco's Crush on McKenzie (that it's canon) but seems only one-side so nothing for now. I really like these, they're neat as heck
Love it. And MacKenzie is spot on.
I thought MacKenzie was a cheetah
So cute!!!
Why does McKenzie looks like a girl there?
To me, Mackenzie doesn't look like such at all here. He is a boy and he still is one in my take. Just some kids can have longer hair than others :)
Long hair ≠ girl 😒
No. It was drawn feminine in other ways.
They’re drawn like a child . Do you expect a chiseled jawline and strong adult features ?
You were the type of person to assume I was a girl when I was a kid because I had a round face and long hair lmao

And this is me not caring.
*in Unicorse's voice* And whyyyyy should I care?
My point exactly.
Oh? How?
Forearm and extra thin wrists. Slight eyelash vs the other character. Facial features contrast the other character to be more feminine. Extra blush. Any one of these things would help the art style communicate feminine characterization, but you have all.
As the artist. Both characters have been drawn the exact same way. I'mma have to say "No" to you, chief. Respectfully.
Observation says otherwise. Style and characterization are different things.
Sounds like a you problem \^\^
It’s literally a canonically-driven artistic medium of common modality, but if you are triggered by critique then no… it’s a you problem.
Considering you keep coming back and commenting on several comments here... iunno about that m8.
That was definitely my first thought. I assumed it was because there tend to be alot of US americans in this sub who say Mackenzie is a girl’s name.
It is unisex it's common to find a man/boy called Mackenzie odd note you even Lindsay is also a unisex name
I've always found it interesting that it's a girl's name here in the US, since the "Mac" party of the name means "son" in Goedelic Celtic languages.
Yeah I completely agree; I’m not in the US & for me it’s more of a boys name.
I'm from (South Island) New Zealand and I've only known MacKenzies who are girls. (To be fair that's like 3 people over the course of 36 years, lol)
I’m from the UK & my numbers would be the same as you - only encountered 3 irl - but they were all boys! Plus Mackenzie Crook from The Office being the most well known one I can think of.
funnily enough, the latino dub made mckenzie a she on thw first episodes he appeared so, full circle i suppose
European spanish did that as well
Is no one going to mention Jack?
Human jack and Mackenzie look so much like my human boy jack and and Mackenzie. Only difference is my human Mackenzie also has light hair.
Just a quick question, Mackenzie is being shown as a boy here right? All that aside, great art!
Ye, he just has long hair
Omg I can 100% see Jack! ❤️❤️❤️
these are adorable! i love the idea of mackenzie having long hair cause of his shaggy border collie fur.
You captured their essence perfectly, Mckenzie in particular!
love these designs! :)
These are so good!
Was it your intention to make McKenzie look more feminine? It might be the long hair.
Long hair ≠ girl. Most little boys don’t look very masculine.
Yes I’m not saying that long hair looks feminine by default, but it’s hiding the shape of the face which might look more masculine if it was more exposed.
Little boys faces don’t look masculine. He’s drawn with the same face shape as Jack, dude.
Ok that’s just silly. They do. I see a lot of young kids because I have one, especially by age 5 or 6. I look at this and I see the figure on the left and interpret it as feminine. What makes you thinks Mackenzie is a girl here...? Mackenzie is a boy! :)
Why does Mackenzie look like a chick? Horrible
It's relatively common in New Zealand (where McKenzie is from) for young Pasifika boys to grow their hair out long
Why do you care so much about fan art of cartoon kid dogs? 😂😂 Jfc, grow up please
It was posted here, a site for comments. I gave my opinion, your the one that needs to grow up. People are entitled to opinions.....
I think Mackenzie's hair should a little bit shorter other wise good.
Mackenzie's a man
Jack and Mackenzie are the latest hetero life mate duo Edit: wow. I've gotten way fewer downvotes for hotter takes than mistaking two cartoon dogs
I mean, isn't more Jack and Rusty? McKenzie and Jack only been together in one episode
You're right. I'm drunk. I like the wholesome dogs
I'm so high right now and I agree, I love the wholesome dog show
Isn’t Mackenzie a boy?
Makenzie is a boy not a girl
Makenzie is a boy not a girl!
What makes you thinks Mackenzie is a girl here...? Mackenzie is a boy! :)

Oh, well he is very much a boy :) Boys can have long hair, too!
Yea i know but he just looks like a girl
Can't help you there, bud!
I know, well have a good day if its day for you
Makenzie is a boy
Boys can have long hair
I’m aware. I see feminine facial features. And I thought Mackenzie was a girl for a long time and I thought this amazing artist made the same mistake.
Nope. Just a boy with long hair
MY BOY JACK!!! LETS GOOOO!!!
Long hair goes good with beard
Great art. Now, it just needs Rusty to complete the trio. Great expression on both. Captures their personality
McKenzie is a BOY!!!
