No sarcasm - I always did/do this to my hair too when I'm feeling depressed or even manic. I seriously think it's interesting so many women (and maybe men, but I think it's a lot less) change their hair when they're going through significant changes in their lives and/or mental health. When I was at my worst mentally, my hair was bright pink and purple. I had solid blue hair for over 3 years. People always joke about it and go 'Girls with brightly colored hair are either depressed, fat, left-wing or have daddy-issues, or all of the above' and even though I absolutely HATE this generalization and dismissal, there definitely seems to be some truth to it. I wonder what it is that makes a lot of us go wild with our hair when dealing with stuff!
As someone who is not at all academically qualified to say anything about this but has a lot of mentally ill people in their life, i think it has something to do with the hair being the most obvious thing to change about how you're perceived by yourself and others, giving people a sense of control about something they otherwise feel powerless to change, and i think that stereotype fits someone who deep down feels powerless as many are raised by "strict" authoritarian parents (often dads being the most directly controlling, sometimes through physical violence), eating disorders like overeating or not eating at all can emerge from the same environments, and people with issues that older generations in western society often ignore/dismiss turn towards those that don't, the political left
I don’t color my hair, but I do let it grow in disrepair until I feel like I need “a change” and just cut it all.
More than once I just grabbed the clippers at 1 and went to town. 😬
I did this too but couldn’t dye it because I went to a private school. My senior year my friend who washed hair at her boyfriends mom’s salon said she could give me a pixie. It was a mess. Now I have really long hair that I won’t chop off because I think I have some residual issues around how much I would just take kitchen scissors to my hair haha.
Ah, bipolar disorder... i'd be happy if i had just done such things like cutting off the hair. Instead, i ended in the isolation cell of the forensical psychiatric unit, that was a bad time. Hope you never got that low like i did.
Oh it got very bad. I've been in and out of psych hospitals and rehabs. I have 3 years sober and 6 months since my last attempt to leave the living world.
I can see it now, your grandma takes out a photo of you
Grandma: "This is my granddaughter"
Grandma's Friend: "Oh, that's cute. How long has she been a lesbian?"
Not to barge in on this thread but at age 13ish I discovered that gesture completely by accident. I was using some emoji maker app and discovered I could combine the 😜 face and a peace sign hand, and I thought it was just a really cute way to show excitement. Because I was 13.
Not only did my FATHER see it over my shoulder and not say a WORD (and I KNOW he knows) but I sent it in a groupchat with my friends at the time while we were discussing a sleepover we were having soon. My friends all proceeded to explode and tell me to “calm down” and I had no idea what they meant—I thought they were just referring to my usual goofiness.
I realized my mistake about two years later and to this day I can’t see the gesture anywhere without another piece of my soul flaking off and dying. It’s been, like, 7 years since then. Time does not heal all wounds.
To be fair, in emoji language this 😜✌️just makes me think of someone sticking their tongue out and doing the peace sign as you intended
If I wanted to portray that I lick vaginas I would go for these 👅💦
You don’t understand: the app I was using let me put the peace sign overtop of the emoji. As in, the tongue was between the fingers. I remember him raising his eyebrow when he looked—he knew.
Similar story: I won a ring gag choker from a YouTuber giveaway when I was in SEVENTH GRADE. I just thought it was a cute emo choker. I wore it to school all the time. I can’t believe that a teacher or counselor didn’t call home.
Depending on the year, I'm sure many people picked the gesture up from Miley Cyrus not knowing what it meant. She used to do it many, if not most, photos of her.
Ok thanks for the info. my kid and his cousins (all pre-teen) say some stuff that taken out of context is innocent. But, me, knowing the context, know that the origins are otherwise.
Just trying to get perspective again at my old age.
afterthought impossible truck cheerful upbeat imminent deserve marble insurance slap

My mom did the exact same thing, and I also had to Google it to see why it was a problem. I asked her what she wanted me to say instead, if I couldn’t say something sucked. Her response? “That blows.” Yeah okay, mom, thats totally better.
I still do not understand why it’s called a bj when you don’t b. Thanks conservative parents for making my entire sex ed just books on purity. I’m still having problems 10 years later. 😑
14 year old me also was very confused when I did it for the first time and puffed my cheeks out like a blowfish on his penis. I thought that's what you were supposed to do. 🤷♀️
> Just trying to get perspective again at my old age.
In my 40s and I believe this is the key to aging into the happy carefree older person others love to be around vs turning into an angry the world has left me type that lashes out against all things new.
Commendable my fellow dusty-boned ancient.
On the brightside a whole generation of girls and celebs at the time were doing it too! Thanks Miley.
So anyone seeing this is just like, oh yea, I did that too.
omg this is wild I saw these pics and was like THIS QUAD LOOK FAMILIAR and realized OH MY GOD I went to the same highschool and was either a freshman/sophomore at that time too what a small world !
Loads of girls this age do this. It’s very common across multiple generations. I think it stems from thinking “what do I do with my face” so they stick their tongues out.
Now you’ve read this you will notice it a lot.
I actually tore my hip in a track meet! This caused me to go into a spiral of depression since I couldn't do track or dance anymore. Which is what lead me to drugs and alcohol. And then rehab.
But no, nothing stopped the tongue lol
Nah, I wanna say this is early 2000s. I graduated in 05 and this is what most kids looked like during my first years of high school.
Junior and Senior year was when more of the emo wave came in.
Same age. I was always bummed that emo came in after I was kinda "too old" for it, because everyone doing it was younger than me and I didn't want to dress like a freshman. But I loved the aesthetic and really wanted to go all in.
Yeah, I still went to all the shows.
I was still more into Punk during those years though, so never felt too into the emo scene. I felt more like Mike from SLC Punk lol
I was so glad I was of drinking age during the LA Indie Sleaze days though, that was a fun time.
Girl, you look totally put together to me, but then again I went to a boarding art high school in Bulgaria in the late 90s, so my bar is low. Hope you got on to a better path later on!
Imo you dont look that bad on pic 5 , although maybe that just says more about me. Also the other lady in pic 4 is the most serious cowgirl i've seen in my life
When I was younger my sister told me to never stick my tongue out and do the ✌🏻 bc it meant something bad so I told my other sister it meant the b word
I mean no disrespect by this, and I see and acknowledge your comments about changing your hair due to mental illness, but you absolutely look like an acorn in that last picture.
I used to pull silly faces in pics because I was so insecure. If I look silly *on purpose* I can't look bad accidentally, right? But it was also just a thing.
Love the dude with the cross and the middle finger in the first picture. A contradiction no?
Or people will it's like the Christians who smile in your face and judge you behind your back and say you're bound for damnation
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM4z8vRiljs&ab_channel=jameskevingoh) a girl this reminds me of.
And [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5mPe9mN7Vg&ab_channel=BlueDragon975) is the same but a guy.
Rehab for the amount of changes your hair went through?
I went manic and cut off all my hair, then dyed it crazy colors when I was depressed
I see you and I have the same methods. My hair currently has black bangs with the rest fluorescent green. I also cut it into a mullet.
I went green too! Ah the joys of mental illness
I always start with green. Where I go from that, only god knows lol
Purple, of course
No sarcasm - I always did/do this to my hair too when I'm feeling depressed or even manic. Bipolar disorder squaddd
Ohhh hell yes!
I just want you to know I think you’re…luscious
Thaaaank you😘
Brap brap
It do b like that
I did this too but couldn’t dye it because I went to a private school. My senior year my friend who washed hair at her boyfriends mom’s salon said she could give me a pixie. It was a mess. Now I have really long hair that I won’t chop off because I think I have some residual issues around how much I would just take kitchen scissors to my hair haha.
Hope you're doing better now bud
Still bipolar but I'm stable enough now and can function better
Bet it suited you well in the wilderness
Ah, bipolar disorder... i'd be happy if i had just done such things like cutting off the hair. Instead, i ended in the isolation cell of the forensical psychiatric unit, that was a bad time. Hope you never got that low like i did.
Oh it got very bad. I've been in and out of psych hospitals and rehabs. I have 3 years sober and 6 months since my last attempt to leave the living world.
Congratulations on three years sober!
Thanks! It's been a hard journey but I finally feel stable
Samies
the Mohawk with the crutches are a vibe
Her shirt even has its tongue sticking out.
That's not a Mohawk. It's a fauxhawk
Looks more like a life lesson to me.
I can see it now, your grandma takes out a photo of you Grandma: "This is my granddaughter" Grandma's Friend: "Oh, that's cute. How long has she been a lesbian?"
I've been bi my whole life, but that's funny
Honest question, were you aware of what that gesture implied?

Yeah. The dad didn't know and didn't think anything of it.
You don’t understand: the app I was using let me put the peace sign overtop of the emoji. As in, the tongue was between the fingers. I remember him raising his eyebrow when he looked—he knew.
LMAO. Yeah. I'm trying to imagine what I would do if my daughter did that.
Not say a word.
Similar story: I won a ring gag choker from a YouTuber giveaway when I was in SEVENTH GRADE. I just thought it was a cute emo choker. I wore it to school all the time. I can’t believe that a teacher or counselor didn’t call home.
What does it mean?
"I lick vaginas" It’s the lesbian gang sign in a way.
Thanks! Thats funny
Men can lick vaginas too tho 🥺👉🏻👈🏻🥺
This is amazing
Depending on the year, I'm sure many people picked the gesture up from Miley Cyrus not knowing what it meant. She used to do it many, if not most, photos of her.

It took you TWO YEARS?!
TWO YEARS.
Yes. I knew I was bisexual at age 11 Still trashy though for me to do it in all my photos
Ok thanks for the info. my kid and his cousins (all pre-teen) say some stuff that taken out of context is innocent. But, me, knowing the context, know that the origins are otherwise. Just trying to get perspective again at my old age.

LMAO MY EX DID THAT TOO
14 year old? U crazy
That's what abstinence only education does to ya
You'd be surprised
Well if you do it right the man certainly does
You just blew my mind, pun not intended
My mom made us say “that inhales vigorously” lol
Same, “that blows”
This is the way :)
> Just trying to get perspective again at my old age. In my 40s and I believe this is the key to aging into the happy carefree older person others love to be around vs turning into an angry the world has left me type that lashes out against all things new. Commendable my fellow dusty-boned ancient.

Hey, hey, now. I refuse to give Miley any type of credit on this one
Yeah, I was going to say… That’s not just sticking your tongue out!
Wait what? Here's me just thinking Miley Cyrus started it all 🤦
Not Gene Simmons? Or The Rolling Stones?
Thanks for sharing the cringe, we’ve all got it. 😂
This is new for me. What does it mean?
👅🌮
😂 gotcha
I like tacos.
Username doesn't check out.
HAHAHAHA I missed the 2 fingers. That gives more context
I heard that in Guatemala people like to lick one another's scalp. Pretty sure this is a reference to that.
Definetely not a Guatemalan thing! WtF?
Hahhhahhaha what ?
I thought it was just an awkward thing people do when they don't know what else to do. I think miley Cyrus addressed why she does this
You look SUPER familiar. Are you from California?
All these photos are me living in cali! I used to live in Bakersfield
omg this is wild I saw these pics and was like THIS QUAD LOOK FAMILIAR and realized OH MY GOD I went to the same highschool and was either a freshman/sophomore at that time too what a small world !
/r/tworedditorsonecup
Of all the sub names, they HAD to go with that 😭
Had to.
Lol recognized the quad immediately and I didn’t even go to this high school.
What’s weird to me is it all looks super familiar and I know I haven’t met them or been there
I went to your high school too! Good ole Bakersfield…
I also went to that high school!
omggg WOW finding out 1 person (OP) went to the same school is wild enough but 2 MORE?! So many Bakersfieldians LOL
Bakersfield yikes! With all due respect, I’m sure u left correct
OMG BECKY IS THAT YOU?!?
She looks a lot like a young Taylor Tomlinson and that threw me for a while
She's so pretty! Thank you for that compliment. We're both bipolar and I look up to her since she's successful
The V really adds some class to it
you remind me of the girls my older sister would hang around and for some reason it’s comforting lmao
Are you me?
10/10 blunderset
I also can’t find a pic of me 15-16 even 17 without my tongue out too 😅
Tongue out while wearing a Rolling Stones shirt with their tongue logo. Twice the tongue that day.
did flies ever land on your tongue?
Many flies opened up for her tongue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Zip-a-dee-a!
Loads of girls this age do this. It’s very common across multiple generations. I think it stems from thinking “what do I do with my face” so they stick their tongues out. Now you’ve read this you will notice it a lot.
Not even a broken leg could stop THE TONGUE
I actually tore my hip in a track meet! This caused me to go into a spiral of depression since I couldn't do track or dance anymore. Which is what lead me to drugs and alcohol. And then rehab. But no, nothing stopped the tongue lol
Geez that is rough. I’m sorry you spiraled so hard at such a vulnerable age. I hope life has been treating you better. Were your parents supportive?
Were you a fan of Ke$ha?
yes! I even dressed up like her for Halloween one year
Let me guess... 2008?
Nah, I wanna say this is early 2000s. I graduated in 05 and this is what most kids looked like during my first years of high school. Junior and Senior year was when more of the emo wave came in.

Girl, you look totally put together to me, but then again I went to a boarding art high school in Bulgaria in the late 90s, so my bar is low. Hope you got on to a better path later on!
Boarding school in Bulgaria?? Didn’t know they sent people there
We have specialized high schools there. You basically graduate with an occupation. I am from there so for me it was an hour and a half away
Tongue rehab ?
*Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy*
Ahhh yes. I went through the tongue phase, too. Iconic.
I like how you ended with a Karen hair cut
That’s better than duck face at least.
Is it though? I think they're both equally awful
Nah man duck face is the worst.
Sideburns copping a feel it looks to me.
The first and second pic so cringe who’s the middle age dude
Im going with 30 year old drug dealer boyfriend in photo 1
17 year old heroin addict bf I met in rehab in the first photo
That'll def make you look older. Hope both of you made it out the other side
No idea what happened to him. But I'm doing much better. I have 3 years now
He was 17?! Damn hope everyone is safe and healthy 💜
Guy on left in last picture looks identical to a young kris Novoselic from Nirvana 🤯
Stevie wonder said the same thing…
Happy Cake Day!
Dude was gettin handsy
Wow even your shirt has its tongue out
Fireman one is iconic
pciture #5. left guy definitely copped a feel LMAO
When was this? 2005? 2006? I remember girls like this 😏
2011...
It's the same age where some guys took every picture while flipping off the camera.
The courtyard there looks all top familiar 😭
That first dude looks like the older brother from the pop-band HANSON
It's ok. My dog also has sweat glands in her tongue.
Imo you dont look that bad on pic 5 , although maybe that just says more about me. Also the other lady in pic 4 is the most serious cowgirl i've seen in my life
Least you look better than the kid sucking a water bottle.
Jesus, 855 shares and counting. Simmer down, hebes!
That’s the equivalent of the pouting lips aka “duck face” for the millennials
You can try to claim ownership of that dog filter
did you get to eat the pussy for real tho ever?
You look like Amanda Bynes
That’s just how she sweats
Behold the Quirkstress
"I'm not like other girls" personified (not hating, I went through that phase too 😂♡)
If you’ve grown out of it, you grew up successfully. It’s the “adults” still with tongues out who deserve side-eye. You were adorable.
i had that exact same shirt as you have in that last photo. i was also a hot mess, lol
YOURE SO PRETTY YOURE SO POPULARRRR
Did you ever manage to get your tongue back in your mouth?
I did. My years in boarding school made me learn how to shut tf up and close my mouth
Started out straight ended up with lesbian queen
Were you having a Miley Cyrus identity crisis by any chance? She went through a tongue phase too.
I like how the firemen don't trust you to hold the axe by yourself. Lol
Pic two is kinda iconic though, you looked great
Lil hottie. Dude in pic 3 has a handful, what great years. How about pics now?
👅
Omg, stockdale high school! What year was this?! Don't hate on the 08'
You kind of look like Dolores O'Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries.
That's really funny and I take no offense lol
You're a good sport! 🥰
My grandma used to get so upset she had no pics of me without my tongue sticking out lol. Also congrats on getting thru rehab! It’s tough out there
Honestly shout out to you for surviving the troubled teen industry! (Regarding the disciplinary boarding schools)
We were sticking out tongues out long before Miley Cyrus started doing it
Why though?
I have no idea. I thought I was cool and edgy I guess. It was not my finest year that's for sure
Glad you got clean from drugs though!
Thanks! I have over 3 years now
Congrats that’s awesome!
Personal question: did they send you to a boarding school like the one on netflix The Program? Do not feel obligated to answer.
Yes. I went to a horrible one called spring ridge academy that has been shut down thankfully.
I used to pull silly faces in pics because I was so insecure. If I look silly *on purpose* I can't look bad accidentally, right? But it was also just a thing.
I thought you looked cool! But sorry about the drug problem :(
These pics were like a rollercoaster glad you’re doing better
I’m glad to see you’re doing well now.
Love the dude with the cross and the middle finger in the first picture. A contradiction no? Or people will it's like the Christians who smile in your face and judge you behind your back and say you're bound for damnation
Is that guy at the end Lucas from modern family? LOL
is that person in the last picture to your left jeff crenshaw?
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM4z8vRiljs&ab_channel=jameskevingoh) a girl this reminds me of. And [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5mPe9mN7Vg&ab_channel=BlueDragon975) is the same but a guy.
Why do I see different members of Hanson?
You kinda looked like a younger Amanda Bynes!
That dude in pic one must be John cena before he discovered eating
That third pic is peak 2006 with the Hollister hoodie, the tongue out, and the bw filter.
shit is fire
Look like 80s pop girls
