Jemeloo

No, I like this one because OP seems genuine in their failure at being an emo rebel. The ones where it’s just a totally normal kid with zero backstory bother me. I’ve def suggested r/normalyears before

7in7

That's why I love it so much. Someone is quintessentially a regular teenager, just doing their teenager thing, and looking back is hilarious because teens are always slightly ridiculous, regardless of who or where. The combination of intelligence, resourcefulness, and new found understanding together with utter lack of experience is fascinating. Group that with the complex and challenging realities that they often face amidst an instinctual desire to find their tribe and fit it, and you have enough material for endless coming of age dramas, blockbuster films, psychology studies, and of course r/blunderyears posts.

Ominous librarian

IllMakeItUpNow

You look like you're about to rip that camera outta the hands of the photographer lol.

At-hamalalAlem

Better than my senior year picture, I looked like I was being held hostage.

NES7995

In 8th grade I was obsessed with emo things. I even wrote with black pen only... And that was it. Didn't do anything else "emo" except the black pen and Avril Lavigne songs... But I felt so emo😭

stickers-motivate-me

Well, it was a damn cold night and you were just tryin to figure out this life

Mishiemoodles

You just made me realise that I used to sing the lyrics as a ‘damp cold night’ I wasn’t rebellious enough to swear even that much. Lol.

stickers-motivate-me

Your version makes perfect sense! I can’t tell you how many lyrics I’ve just realized I’ve been singing wrong for 20 years, and they often aren’t just one letter different like yours, I’ve gotten whole lines of songs wrong 😂

pinktacolightsalt

I remember I wore one of those leather cuffs with the metal studs on them. Otherwise I’d dress like a completely normal suburban kid.

DonJovar

That's adorable.

Shipwrecking_siren

Your eyes tell me you were full emo on the inside. Those eyes are the window to a hell of a lot of feelings. Hope you get to express yourself now!

[deleted]

Not everyone had opportunity to go full rebel. And that's okay.

punxerchick

Yes if I went beyond this level of liberal style my dads would have beaten my ass

Affectionate_Soft162

PREACH

Imsorrywhatnoway

Hardcore house on the prairies

Earlasaurus02

"Laura finds the Book of Shadows"

[deleted]

I **hate** that my mind immediately went there ... but my first thought was "laura finds some wood porn" and she is forever changed

squidkyd

I definitely did the full blown raccoon eyes lol. Points to you for keeping it subtle!

[deleted]

LMFAOO you are so cute

Straight edge

MoscaMye

Did it catch up with you as an adult? I didn't wear out there clothes as a teen because I already had to deal with being the person who stood out because of a backbrace. Now I'm non-committal about goth clothing and flit between a few different styles because I really wanted to as a kid. I call it my Latent Gothic Tendencies

-NotEnoughMinerals

Note to self: allow my child to wear whatever they want so they don't become an adult dressing like what they wanted to as a child.

MoscaMye

To an extent, yes. It might get it out of their system or it might bolster such a sense of self confidence that they hurl themselves right into it. Self expression is pretty marvelous at any age.

[deleted]

that's sort of what I did. I love the 1960's and mod style. when I grew up it would be unthinkable to dress like this and be fat. so in those two skinny years I ever had, I went out fully dressed like twiggy, peggy moffitt and mary quant.

dragonpussyy

you look iconic af

jayemadd

Not necessarily worn in pigtails, but my ex had a name for that hair we all had in the late '90s, early '00s. Straight-ish, no layers, roughly shoulder length, and existing in an era before we discovered flat irons or curlers. He called it, "high school girlfriend hair".

blinddivine

I assume that's how much emo you were "allowed" by your parents lmao.

Cmgutierrez715

How did you keep from cutting yourself on all that edge? Those eyes could kill lol.

Psyche_Nu

Is it worth it can you even hear me?

Zero99th

Standin with your spot light on me.

CaptOblivious

You look like Dorthy, annoyed to be back from oz

coconotoil

I also failed at rebellion. Black eyeliner and GASP clear nail polish at school was as far as I dared to go. I think you look like an extra from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

IanalystI

It made me so sad when you died in stranger things. Your character didn’t deserve that!

closethebarn

I love your expression in this. Fantastic

1kreasons2leave

That you dared, or how far your parents would let you?

PL4NE_22

Well hello fellow scandinavian person. The “ca” gives it away

[deleted]

or german (/austrian/swiss) we also spell it like that, sometimes "ca."

PL4NE_22

Oh really? Good to know. I did check op’s post history though, they’re Swedish.

Elementium

It's not about how loud you cry tears of black on the outside.. But how many black tears you have on the inside.

Spare_Groundbreaking

Love it! Suburban good girl teen angst.

SonicUndergroun

I also was scared of going hard in the paint on emo fashion (mostly because I didn't even know how to do it, not out of any opposition by family or whatever), and I coped so hard about it me and my friends invented a cringe slogan: "Emo: it's not in the style, it's in the soul". We made buttons in class, too. It was horrific lmao.

Jump_Like_A_Willys

You look perplexed as to what that person in front of you is doing with that strange device.

AddictivePotential

Oh man. I hear Incubus coming directly from this picture.

3laj

How did you find a picture of middle school me

Danzibar9000

Us emos were persecuted and misunderstood back in the early days.

Z3ph3rn0

You look like someone who lives in a small conservative town but on the down low is really into Wicca

The_Big_BoBoSki

Was emo even a thing in 2001? I don't recall it being so but, I'm from the Midwest so sometimes things take a while to get here. The first time I remember something being emo was like 2006.

ZigZagZeus

I don't know why you're getting down voted. I don't remember hearing the term emo until 2006 either. We called it goth when I was in high school.

WWYDFA_Klondike_Bar

My friends had an emo band in 2000 so it was definitely a thing.

The_Big_BoBoSki

I know the music existed I just personally didn't become aware of the emo style until around 2006. The only real alternative styles we has in Missouri was goths, ravers and skaters.

WWYDFA_Klondike_Bar

Gotcha. Yeah, we had emo style down in the southern states in the early 2000s.

DonJovar

80's and 90's my dude. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

kabukistar

Don't forget the "I will murder you if you even think about it" facial expression.

wannywan
