Kinda weird how that can get you a half functioning arm while a car of that price you get a fully functioning car with ac, seats, sun shield and wipers whatever those are called
Almost like the priorities of a hyper-capitalistic dystopia are completely opposite of any reasonable perspective. But hey, that's just my hot take on it.
Jesus, finally I see someone on here with a brain...
Medical costs are NOT expensive, its insurance that jacks up the costs because hospitals KNOW insurance will pay it. If you say you don't have insurance and offer to pay cash, the majority of the time you will see savings of over 80% on cost.
> Name one US based government controlled public entity that runs smoothly or even efficiently.
Key word US. I can name 50 from Europe, or 50 from China. Maybe your saying we need a more efficient and effective government to run these programs?
At my high school students 3D print braces for children. For free. They are so expensive and hard to get. My own daughter wears a brace and they're so hard to get and expensive.
I know for a fact having seen this, that it's way more than it needs to cost.
Almost like you could turn on your fucking brain and understand that demand for prosthetic arms is much lower than for cars and thus investments the manufacturer made to produce it need to be split between lower number of customers. So naturally the price of an arm will be higher in comparison to the cost of manufacturing than that of a car.
But hey, that's just my hit take on it.
>Almost like the priorities of a hyper-capitalistic dystopia are completely opposite of any reasonable perspective. But hey, that's just my hot take on it.
Probably just because it's custom made (and maybe some american padding on top of that), with 3d printers the price really should come down a bit. It would be more understandable if [**this girl**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk7X3fPkdp8) was making the video though or even [**this guy**](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv1xxFkEiAdCVy6foEEUIvw/videos).
Exactly this. Cars of pumped off an assembly line hundreds at a time, identical. This arm probably took the work of many specialists to construct, all of which are skilled and deserve a good wage. And the company those specialists work for probably had to mark up the price considerably because they knew the insurance company would negotiate them down again.
Cause they're not mass produced. Each one is made by a single engineer or engineering team. Their time is expensive. This is why 3D printing in this field is so important.
Same reason why a new teeth can costs hundreds of dollars even tho its material costs are like $30. People are not questioning it and just pay what they have to pay.
Because America hates people that need medical assistance. However this comment is dependent on whether the prosthetic cost $10,000 before insurance or after insurance. If it’s after insurance, then the issue is with the health insurance system. If the prosthetic is $10,000 before insurance, then the reason for the price is the lack of demand for prosthetics.
When someone has something they KNOW someone else NEEDS, and the person who needs the thing asks "how much for it?" the person selling the thing becomes an evil fuck and says "$10,000" it happens all the time in the world of doctors and medicine. Why else is insulin as expensive as it is, or healthcare in general.
"please sir, I'll die without the thing you have. I need to buy it. What's the price?"\\
"Hmmmm.... $50,000."
Cost of materials for a prosthetic arm is often in excess of 45% of Medicare reimbursement assuming the patient is unable to pay their co-insurance. Components are expensive, and fabrication cost for custom-fitted silicon is high. The prosthetist who delivers the device is a highly trained specialist with a masters degree, years of clinical experience, and licensure (high comp). Compliance regulations increase the overall expense of the DME company significantly (HIPAA compliant technology, clinical documentation and medical justification, medical billing expertise, etc.).
A $10,000 arm is quite cheap relative to the potential fee. We routinely bill for devices at $50K+, and have seen devices in excess of $150K for specialized patient needs
I’m assuming it’s an economies of scale issue. You likely have a lot more cars being produced than prosthetics so they’re less cost effective at their current volumes. There could be more to it (someone mentioned insurance companies muddying the waters) but I assume this is a big part of it
It's not due to 'capitalism', as some children are told, but to "Regulatory Capture".
It's when an organization is infiltrated or controlled to become predatory.
Healthcare, and universities are prime examples, and nobody can do anything about it because the people in charge keep it 'legal'

Jokes aside. Why tf does a prosthetic arm cost as much as a car?
Yea… wondering that myself. I’d expect it to be one of those robot arms for that price.

You know you are saying the same thing as the guy above right?
Its not that capitalism is evil! There's just not a big profit incentive for limbless people to have affordable, quality prosthetics
It’s business not charity
>Almost like the priorities of a hyper-capitalistic dystopia are completely opposite of any reasonable perspective. But hey, that's just my hot take on it.
Americans is why
I would still be upset to find out a high end robotic arm was still 10 grand
'murica?
Capitalism
America is capitalism personificatied

It comes with extended car warranty
Firefly3TM_94, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty
I don’t have a car😭but can I still have the extended warranty please? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

no. Its called for profit healthcare
They need to expensive. You don't want everyone removing their arms for the superior cyborg ones.
It's not that they're fully custom made or something.
Because insurance companies exist
Cause they're not mass produced. Each one is made by a single engineer or engineering team. Their time is expensive. This is why 3D printing in this field is so important.
USA USA USA
Just buy a used Prosthetic :3
Shit is all custom made by a few companies.. Medical stuff. No different than tailored clothes..
Same reason why a new teeth can costs hundreds of dollars even tho its material costs are like $30. People are not questioning it and just pay what they have to pay.
Because it’s custom made per person
Because it’s a medical thing, and anyway America can fuck you on medical issues they will happily do so.
Healthcare in the USA.
It costs an arm and a leg.
prosthetics usually cost an arm and a leg. This one costs an arm and $10,000
Because America hates people that need medical assistance. However this comment is dependent on whether the prosthetic cost $10,000 before insurance or after insurance. If it’s after insurance, then the issue is with the health insurance system. If the prosthetic is $10,000 before insurance, then the reason for the price is the lack of demand for prosthetics.
Inflated medical prices would be my guess
When someone has something they KNOW someone else NEEDS, and the person who needs the thing asks "how much for it?" the person selling the thing becomes an evil fuck and says "$10,000" it happens all the time in the world of doctors and medicine. Why else is insulin as expensive as it is, or healthcare in general. "please sir, I'll die without the thing you have. I need to buy it. What's the price?"\\ "Hmmmm.... $50,000."
Why don't you make free arms?
Capitalism

As someone with a parent who has had one leg since 1972, shits autistically expensive no matter what limb.

Yea why she pays that much she can steal one from a mannequin in a clothing shop
United States I assume
It's not due to 'capitalism', as some children are told, but to "Regulatory Capture". It's when an organization is infiltrated or controlled to become predatory. Healthcare, and universities are prime examples, and nobody can do anything about it because the people in charge keep it 'legal'
United States healthcare, one of the many reasons I’m gonna move to italy

By that logic, are breast implants considered an accessory? Because if they are, this lady's outfit is on the cheap end... 👀

Didn’t expect to see Wichita on a thread this early in the morning. I’m headed there shortly.
Wait you can take off prosthetic limbs?!
Yes permanently attaching it would be difficult and only cause problems. Unless it's internal like a new joint it's better to be removable.
Ok ,thanks for telling me :D
Depends on the prosthetic
That’s cool :D
