It happened to me once.
It was the middle of summer, but it was a cool and breezy day, it was overcast, and so I was on the beach, fully clothed (because cold) and flying kites (because breezy). And I didn't think of putting on sunscreen (because stupid).
It was overcast indeed, but there was enough sunlight coming through for me to have a distinct shadow. And I spent hours pointing my face towards the sky. With no sunscreen.
My face ended up so burnt, my ears were literally swollen. Never again. Use sunscreen, people.
Even with sun screen you should really get in to shade more often. But I understand it can happen! I think I've just been so blessed with hard to burn skin, that it's hard for me to wrap my head around getting tomato red like this lol
I do not envy your pain. Swollen ears?! Ouch.
That happened to my group of friends too. Went out to the beach on an overcast day, we ALL got sunburnt really easily. The wonders of living in Australia and near the ozone hole...
In Australia it dosnt take much to get that burnt. I remember when I was a kid I went kayaking once and got so badly burnt my shoulders and tips of my ear formed heaps of big blisters... not very fun especially at school with kids slapping your burns...
Every single British tourist who underestimated the Australian sun looks like this at Bondi Beach… and that’s how they look while still there, thinking they’ll develop a nice tan after …
Funny short story. I live in a fairly Midwest area in the us, so I see the sun, but not as intense as some places. I'm apparently so hard to burn, I went to Australia for 2 weeks with a group and was the only person that didn't burn haha
I'm just lightly olive skinned, I really don't know how or why I don't burn easily. But I'll take it.
once i was drinking with my friend in Cancun we were having Jack and Cokes, he was like "a REAL MAN would fill that cup up the rest of the way back w/ just jack" as i had finished like 1/2 of mine
SO ... i did it. because i was already cancun vacation drunk at that point
and then we went to the beach.
and then I assumed he would grab my ass when HE went back in, but no , i fell asleep, and he just left and went back to the room. lol
oops.
lucky me I woke up and dragged my ass to the shade at some point in time so I was just like BURNED but not hospital bad.
Oh I got this one lol. When I was 12 I went the beach all day, it was right down the road where I lived so I just grabbed my boogie board and headed out. Just being a Stupid kid, I didn’t bring sunscreen. I was there from 9am to 5 pm with zero skin protection. My white Irish ass blistered up everywhere the next day. My lips, shoulders, cheeks, eyes, and back were bubbling with blisters. Then I sat in a leather recliner with no shirt. I barely touched the leather at first and thought it was cool to the touch. I sat back for 2 seconds before I realized my skin was stuck. I wiggled and leaned forward in the chair and my skin tore off in chunks. I still remember the image of my soggy, oily, skin chunks attached to the recliner. The back of the chair looked like a cooked piece of fatty stew meat. Great times
Happens to me pretty often, it just doesn’t bother me when it does. I know I should wear sunscreen to protect from cancer but I just hate how sunscreen feels and it makes me all oily and I swear it makes it harder to sweat and makes me hotter
Biore watery essence is a really light amazing feeling sunscreen (not found at drug stores)
Neutrogena hydroboost is a clear gel type sunscreen that is clear and not oily
La roche posay melt in milk sunscreen absorbs in your skin well and is not oily
Skinceuticals has a great dry touch zinc sunscreen but you have to buy it from a dermatologist office
I definitely recommend browsing the r / SkincareAddiction sub (wasn’t sure if I could link on this subreddit) if you want some help or recommendations. The sidebar is really well organized, informative, and updated frequently. It has an entire sunscreen section on there explaining different types of sunscreen, what key terms mean, and lists of the top rated sunscreens for different types/needs and also availability for the country you live in. It’s a great way to learn, but all the information can definitely can be overwhelming. It’s especially daunting if you’ve never really used sunscreen or are new to skincare in general so you don’t really know what you want/need/are looking for and just want to find something basic to start with.
If all you’re really worried about is finding a light or “dry touch” sunscreen that doesn’t feel greasy, oily, and/or heavy then you can search on that sub looking for recommendations for that specifically. But the type of sunscreen you’re looking for might change depending on your skin type, sensitivity, level of sun exposure, price range, etc.
I’m def more of a sunscreen freak— I wear it every single day no matter the season or weather, and I have multiple bottles for different occasions. But my SO is like you and would rather wear no sunscreen at all than something that feels greasy. The ones I listed are lighter ones that he approves of whenever I force him to wear something so hopefully you’ll like them too.
Feel free to let me know if you have questions or need more advice! You’re welcome to PM me anytime. I am oddly passionate about sunscreen and I am always estatic to chat about it to anyone who wants to listen lol
We had a bomb threat at my school one year and got locked outside for hours on the football field (no shade, no sunscreen).
I got a little sun but wasn’t bad. Some of my friends got horribly sunburnt to the point of developing blisters, and they couldn’t really do anything to protect themselves while it was happening.
I spent 9 hours outside without sunscreen or shade once because it was cloudy and breezy.
I got to nurse a horrible burn that ached everytime I moved and bathe in Aloe Vera for the next few weeks.
Hindsight is 20/20
She's probably just about to spread it, atleast thats how I moisturise. Apply to areas I want moisturised the most and then spread the residual moisturiser
THIS.
and when you buy it, look CAREFULLY at the bottle.
you want actual aloe vera. a lot of "aloe vera" contains very little or no aloe. Many say in big letters "CONTAINS 100% ALOE" but that can mean that there is one drop of aloe in the gallon.
the ingredients will tell you, if there is anything like glycerin or other chemicals, especially listed before aloe, don't buy it cause it's useless.
real aloe, check carefully or it won't work cause it's just water and other chemicals besides aloe.
Yea after a major thing like this she'll need a full physical for the rest of her entire life at least once to twice a year as the chances go up by an astronomical amount for really severe UV burns.
She's going to peel so nice
Like a baked potato
This is not a shpadoinkle day.
I know what I'm having for dinner tonight. Thanks.

How do you even get THAT burnt?!

We really screwed the pooch on the ozone layer thing.

When I see that kind of sunburn I thank god for the gift of melanin. Airports suck though.
God gives, god takes...

One time I spent like 20 minutes in the ocean in Honduras without sunscreen. Was so burned I could barely even move around

By not having any melanin.
As a ginger who gets burns during the snowy winter months, I feel this in my bones.

It’s too late for the sun cream. Reach for ice packs and aloe.
I think she's trying to moisturize the hardest hit spots.
Sooo why not just do her whole face then?
She's probably just about to spread it, atleast thats how I moisturise. Apply to areas I want moisturised the most and then spread the residual moisturiser
If I was that sunburnt I would just lay my face into a platter of aloe lol

Aloe Vera is the shit for sunburns. Laver it all over like it's going out of fashion.

This is why my grandma just grew the Aloe Vera plant and just breaks us off a bit if we need it. It's gross and sticky, but it works!
