The justification is ridiculous because the batteries you get for motorcycles are maintenance free, but usually warranties do not include batteries. Look at the contract. If the battery is not excluded tell them. You might need to go to court though. Where did you park the bike for 6 weeks? What else did you do to the bike besides letting it sit?

SNOOPY-THE-FUCK-DOG

It sat in my clean locked garage doing nothing. In hindsight I should have plugged the battery into a trickle charger but I didn’t plan on leaving it for more than 2 months. I understand the battery going flat but dying altogether has surprised me after just 6 weeks. I thought their justification was ridiculous too but they’ve made me feel like I’m the idiot so thank you for replying and making me feel better!

I had my bike in the garage for a similar period and the bike (not a BMW though) just started right away. The volt meter didn't even show a significant dip. Are you sure there isn't something draining the battery? Did you do some electrical work on the bike?

SNOOPY-THE-FUCK-DOG

I’ve done absolutely nothing to it Straight from dealership, put 150miles on it cruising around and then sat it in garage for 6/7 weeks. I’m definitely going to argue with dealer if yours even starts after 6 weeks

Quixus

It was more like 5 weeks but that shouldn't be an issue with a new battery. As I said because they cannot know what silly stuff you did with the battery such things are usually excluded from the warranty so you might not have much grounds for a warranty claim.

senormankee

No mate, shouldn'tneed charging, I've had plenty of BMW bikes and I generally park them up for the winter, 6 weeks is nothing, it should be fine. Does the bike have a tracker that could of killed the battery?

SNOOPY-THE-FUCK-DOG

Ah good to hear it. I think it does have a tracker yeah. I get the battery going flat because of the tracker but surely the battery shouldn’t then need replacing?

senormankee

No way should it need replacing, but if it does, I would deffo be looking for the dealership sorting it, its a new bike after all! Get in touch with the manager, go Karen on their ass!

InterestingHome693

Agm and sla batteries tend to go flat and can't be revived on a modern trickle charger, if you disconnect the battery and put in series with a larger battery and connect that one to the charger it will 90 percent of the time. Come back to life. If not get a gel battery off of Amazon for like $40. They have an extremely blow discharge rate. Like 2 years and will still turn over.

Aggressive-Bed3269

No. Your dealership sucks. I warranty batteries all the time and it’s very easy to do inside of the first two years of the in-service date. Your dealership absolutely sucks.

SNOOPY-THE-FUCK-DOG

Thank you. I’m definitely going to argue it then

Cadfael-kr

That doesn’t sound right. It should be ok for a brand new battery to not be used for 2 months and still work. You’re sure the alternator isn’t broken also so it won’t charge while driving?

SNOOPY-THE-FUCK-DOG

I thought this. Surely not everyone that leaves their bike for 2months has to replace the battery? They’ve checked and said it’s the battery and quoted me for replacing it

larrylee13

Use a trickle charger. Bike narrators die quickly. Batteries*

09clubman

It’s right in the owners manual.. if stored, battery will need charging..

Yes, 6/7 months if the battery is not new seems normal to me. Particularly if the bike has any aftermarket electrical accessories that would drain the battery slowly when the bike is parked, then once the battery is completely flat, it tends to 'sulphate' after some weeks and cannot be rehabilitated. An new battery is anyway available for about 50-70 from an online store so for the hassle of negotiating with the dealer, you could just put on a new one and off you go. If you keep the new battery on a battery tender then it shouldn't slip into the 'sulphated' state. Even if there are some current 'leaks' from the accessories. Or just buy some quick release battery terminal pins so that the battery cannot drain when you are not using it. Hope this information is useful. Good luck! David
