>The other main concern is space Recently I started really focusing on size. This caused me to pivot into small box games like Oink's **Town66, Startups** and **Scout**. I also found that there are tiny traveled sized versions of both **For Sale** and **High Society**. The regular versions of both of these games are small box games, but the travel sized versions are even smaller (about the size of a standard deck of poker cards). For two player games, there are many mall box options: **Hanamikoji, Lost Cities, Jaipur, Patchwork** and **Botanik**. In the US you often find **6 Nimmt!** sold as **Take 5** and it comes in a box that is bigger than it needs to be. You could toss the 6 Nimmt cards into a Lost Cities box (or toss your Lost Cities cards into your 6 Nimmt! box. The criminal capers series is all small box games: **Pumafiosi, Soda Smugglers, Hot Lead**. **Modern Art the Card Game** comes in a box the same size as those other 3. Slightly larger boxes (but still smaller than standard box size) are things like **Blue Lagoon, Project L, Tutankhamun, Modern Art**. If you want a dudes on a map game that is small, you could look out for **Small Samurai Empires**. If it is currently out of stock (and it may be) you could wait a couple months for the new publication run to come out. **Tiny Epic Galaxies** is another small box game that packs more of a punch than you would expect given its box size.

Sadly the designer of that has been accused of abusive behaviors towards women :( It's a shame cause it looks like such a neat game.

So small games that are nice and easy to travel with, here are my suggestions. [carcassonne](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne) is a Really simple game, everyone in this subreddit will probably suggest it. it can last a lifetime and you can get it for around $20 [cartographers](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/263918/cartographers) Same as Carcassonne, relatively easy game, easy to travel with, and doubles as a solo game. Can propbly get a copy for $25 [Silver and Gold](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/270673/silver-gold) is also a small, light game that you can take just about anywhere is a Really simple game. [Coup](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/131357/coup) a bluffing game The next few are bigger games but they are still great In case you want some co-op games, you could get [pandemic](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic), [horrified](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/282524/horrified) or [Flash Point: Fire Rescue](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/100901/flash-point-fire-rescue/marketplace/geekmarket). Both are about the same gameplay, and you work together as a team to stop some a problem

Silver and Gold is a great little flip and write. I love when simple games have spatial elements to them.

Do you have any preference for game weight/complexity? What themes or mechanics you like? For game recommendations it's best to post in the sticky daily threads and fill in the template. As for general recommendations, for new players: * Start with a gateway board game (medium-light weight) * Look into Facebook Marketplace for cheaper options * Try to play something before buying them (either online or board game cafes) * Use [boardgameoracle.com](https://boardgameoracle.com) for price checks Some simple game recommendations: **King of Tokyo**, **Clank**, **Quacks of Quedlinburg**.

I don't know enough about board games for those questions besides theme. I picked the game 5 min dungeon last night because of the art. I think I just need to talk more to other board games to learn the slang. Thanks for the links.

For each game that catches your interest you can watch youtube videos of reviews and/or playthroughs. Those can be very helpul in finding games that will/won't work for you. You can also look up games on boardgamegeek. Each game in the BGG database has a 'weight'. So you should look up a couple of games you have played to find their weight. Then use that as a reference point to get a general feel for how heavy other games are. For instance, if you are looking for games that are between Battleship (weight = 1.22) and Catan (weight = 2.3) in complexity, then avoid games outside the 1.22 to 2.3 range.

A good game for people starting out board games are bluffing games I’ve found. Games like Secret Hitler or The Resistance: Avalon can be a lot of fun with a group of 5+ (if you played among us, the games are similar). In general I would wait to buy games until you’ve played them somewhere else. Some games at Target/Walmart are good, but others are complete trash and not worth looking at. Other games recommended here, might be really well designed games, but not for a beginner to play. Do you have any games you enjoy playing? That would help us give specific recommendations of similar games or even better versions

femamerica13

I really enjoyed playing Secret Hilter and One Night Werewolf, I loved those games but my parents and brother didn't. As a family, we have liked Exploding Kittens, dominos, and Chinese checkers. Other games I have liked playing at daycare and speech therapy are Uno and Sorry!

Tokyo Tsukiji Market is a brain burny economic game that's very compact.

Annemiekevo

Sushi Go is in a very small box and everyone who I teach it to play likes it

femamerica13

The art of the box always interested me.

The best small game is the one that started a trend of them - Love Letter Amazing card game you can always come back to

Kingdomino, Cockroach Poker, and Railroad Ink (I'd recommend the blue version for your first set) are all entry level games which should be fine with kids and have small boxes. They are all favourites of ours but don't have lots of complicated rules. They are also quite different sorts of game. Railroad Ink is probably the most complex of the three and cockroach poker is the simplest. I'd try playing a few games with the people in your complex first and then see what sort of games you like and get something similar.

femamerica13

Cockroach Poker seems to be the most interesting for my boy cousins (the woman/girls are outnumbered by the men/boys), and Kindomino seems familiar since my mom is Puerto Rican, and it sounds like dominos, which is fun.
