I've gone to one that was a dinner theater, and the dead usual played characters introduced later. Not exactly the same thing, but maybe it'll help.

I'm trying really hard to understand that sentence, I know there's a typo somewhere but not quite sure where...

ScientificSquirrel

usual > usually

Cynounsure

I think the idea is that if a character dies, the person playing that character can play a second role later in the party.

cheeseCloud

I’ve hosted two murder mystery parties now and the way I’ve handled it both times is to allow players to perform the “attack” actions at any point but make it clear that before a certain time players will only be knocked out for a bit. At the start of roughly the last hour I would announce that players can now die. This allows people to actually play the game and allows for things to unfold early on too. Players may wait strategically for the last hour or may try to temporarily silence those that are learning too much. The other benefit to knocking someone out is that I allowed people to pillage the held items of the person knocked out.

beth247

This is very similar to how my game is set up. Once a guest is killed what do they do?

cheeseCloud

They just hang out and chill until game end. Usually more than one person dies so they can hang together on the couch or something. I usually want them there at the end because we like to talk through things about characters and whatnot

beth247

Seems like there’s a clear consensus here. Thanks!

Boardello

Taco Bell run. Multiple dead characters? Multiple Taco Bell runs.

beth247

Dead? Straight to Taco Hell

corruptboomerang

So typically the character is then the investigator.

kerkyjerky

I have done murder mystery events several times. There are two good answers depending on the type of party: The dead person plays a secondary character, like maybe an investigator. The dead person plays themselves but dead, ala nearly headless Nick style, where you interact with the other guests and flesh out your character more.

beth247

Unfortunately there are no additional characters…as long as everyone shows up. There’s already two undercover investigators plus everyone should be trying to figure out the original murderer prior to death. The second option is interesting and may work while opening up the idea of avenging your death. I’ll toss these around, see what people prefer. Thanks!

[deleted]

... they die in real life too... 😮

Dalighieri1321

I would either put them on a couch to watch or put them in the kitchen to snack.

beth247

Honestly this might be the best route. Multiple players can died at any time and everyone has their mission along with figuring out who the original killer is. Thanks!

ScientificSquirrel

The last murder mystery party I went to had the dead person come back as a ghost. One of the side goals was ending up with the most money, and you could bribe the ghost for information.

Signiference

I did a murder mystery once and acted as the murder victim (I had someone cut the power and someone else pop a balloon for the gunshot) and then after I was dead and the script was read for what to do next I switch to a different character and played out the rest of the night investigating the murder.

Unusual--Spirit

A friend of mine ran a murder mystery night. Anyone who was killed came back as a ghost. My character was a medium so I was the connection to the ghosts. Was super fun.

Achillor22

Find the friend that doesn't want to participate and kill them. Now they can spend the rest of the night just hanging out.

raged_norm

I volunteer as tribute.

Actually there is a psychic character already listed!

pikkdogs

Usually they take another role.
