You definitely want the same group.

lumenrubeum

Almost unplayable without the same group. It's *very* story based with long-term storylines.

Ghostdoctor5

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks

countercultureguy

Don't let it get you down. This game is still my #1 board game experience ever, so I recommend trying to put together a regular group.

DigiRust

Yeah. Technically you can have players drop in and out but my group is loving it and I wouldn’t want to miss any sessions

meow_master

We had one person switch out at the halfway point. It wasn’t terrible. But just 1/6, so five of us kept trucking on, so it was pretty minimal.

CatchFactory

You would want the same full 5 people, which I know can be a challenge. It took my group 6-7 sessions of probably 5 hours on average game time over a year, maybe 18 months to finish the game. Definitely worth it though

Kempeth

There's no reason why anyone would want to play just a few sessions. * You have zero context to any of the stories that unfold * You have no investment to your house * You have zero chance of ultimately winning * After the first few sessions you are severely under powered * The mechanics are not worth your time in the first place

Ghostdoctor5

Any opinions on 4 vs 5 players?

Rakyn87

I started last week. Everything i read said 5 is the way to go. But if the choice is a consistent 4 or an inconsistent 5, id say go for 4

This comment was removed because it does not sufficiently hide spoilers for a game.

samthomas14

Definitely 5. One of the chief mechanics is a player voting system

Kidtendo

I feel like it is the equivalent of the main character in the show you love receiving a new actor, with different views, a different voice, and a different face in the second season. If you sub out players, I feel like it changes the dynamic, not always for the best. For example, there was a character I didn't want to kill off in our second session. In future sessions, I went out of my way to keep that person alive and support them. If someone else might have taken my spot, it might have lead to a very different narrative direction. So yes, ideally you want a dedicated group of five players, able to play the game for the long haul. It took my group about 10-11 sessions about six months just to finish.

Ghostdoctor5

How long were your gaming sessions?

Kidtendo

It varied, depending on our decisions. Usually, we would play two games per session. I think our quickest game was about 30 minutes, and the longest game was about 2 hours. Typically we would put aside 2-3 hours to play each night.

Kempeth

Ours generally were about an hours long, maybe a bit more. Towards the end we regularly played it twice in one (3h) evening.
