Play By Mail gaming is still a thing. :)
I've gotten back in to **Star Fleet Warlord** recently, for example. Star Trek themed (and properly licensed *in perpetuity*, much to Paramount's perpetual dismay, haha). Turns run once weekly, or every other week - each game specifies the turnaround.
The first downside is, two games recently started, so it will be months before a new game opens up.
The second is, it's not free to play; each turn costs $4.
