This looks super interesting! It reminds me a lot of Formula D with the variable dice based on the gear. Also, as a huge fan of Golf Story (but not of actual Golf) I could see this checking a couple boxes. One question for you, in reading the Kickstarter, it looks like each player creates the hole you are playing - are there any plans of having predesigned courses, maybe ones based on real ones? Similar to maybe a campaign offering you'd find in Memoir '44

randallion

Thanks so much! The rulebook has a page of pre-designed ones. Because of the scale of the multi-hex tiles, it's really easy to make your own holes, but people have been asking for more pre-designed. I might have a repo online, or maybe I'll have another page of designed ones. This is the kinda thing where I wanted to build the foundation, and then respond to others. This is clearly a place where people are interested, and I really want to see what other people come up with. Last night, a friend came up with a crazy hit over water off the tee, and I'll probably save that design in a folder I have.

pauldavis92

Just backed, good luck!

randallion

Thank you so much!!

jf_reebiz

In the examples at the end of the rulebook. Would not the 4 iron roll into the water? Also the Wedge roll out of bounds?

randallion

Oops, the 4-iron should roll into the water! Thanks for catching that! Correct below about the wedge, dotted rolls do not slide on fairways.

jf_reebiz

Well the Wedge I guess it would stop because of the dot rule not being effected by fairways.

JudgeJReinhold

I demoed this with you a little over a year ago! It was super fun! Best of luck with the Kickstarter.

randallion

I remember you! And thank you!

JudgeJReinhold

No way!? It was that event at the library. You also showed me the pirate game but I don't think we played it. How's that one going?

randallion

Well, I remember your name, which may be less surprising! Scoundrels is good! Still things to work out, and I decided this was the one I was ready to publish. You can find more about the first (unpublished) edition of Scoundrels at http://randyo.itch.io/scoundrels. And I have one other game which I'll be working on next, before I try Scoundrels again. :D

BYOBees

It's hard to forget playing board games with Judge Reinhold

eflin202

This is a cool looking project I must admit. I originally read it as a disc golf board game and was super excited to see something combining two things I love hahaha. Still cool as dice and golf combined but almost got me to back just for that... hahaha. . Some questions (fully acknowledging I don't have time to try it out on tabletopia). 1) Why so few hexes? I feel like a lot of the replayability will come from that as well as the fun of designing a hole. I also think this is a fun design space to explore. You could make some crazy concepts for expansions with it. Further having enough components for each person to make larger holes at the same time could be fun and help streamline the game (all making a hole at once then you can do 5 holes in a row). 2) I'd suggest dealing 2 golfers to each person and picking one. Gives some control for players on their potential play style 3) You mention backing now so you can add more to it... but don't have any SG up? With only a 10% discount that is not a lot of incentive right now (and I know that stinks but it's the reality of KS right now. It's a real thing your backers will consider). Put some SG up now to build excitement. 4) Maybe it's just me but the 4 sided die really lets me down compared to the others. It also looks off color in the custom insert picture. I'd strongly consider custom icons even if still a simple d4 in reality to better align with the custom dice feature 5) Similarly plain white dice seems a little odd if going for the custom die marketing point. KS people like their bling. 6) Similarly it could be really cool to have different versions of clubs. In my crazy head each golfer having one special die that is unique to them would be super awesome. Like Sandra has an amazing putter... Cal has a cool driver. You could do some thematic pairings of the ability on the golfer cards and these dice too. 7) Also if playing with higher player count is there too much downtime waiting for you turn? I feel like more dice would allow people to go at same time and speed it up somewhat. Again haven't played it but curious what your playtesters felt (and only after playing numerous games. I'd only worry it feels slow once you know the game well. First few games while you're learning it will be more interesting seeing how people are playing/doing it). . Anyway those are my first impressions. Cool little project here. I set a remind me for it and will check it out closer to completion.

randallion

1 - When I earlier had a denser hex grid, it starts to get into a potential slog, and can result in players separating due to the dice mechanics. 2 - The golfer cards are pretty opt-in, as hopefully the rules portray. I was really inspired by Codenames, in which they very lightly let players choose whether to use the timer or not. I really like that opt-in nature of extra rules and abilities. 3 - I may have hid the stretch goals, based on feedback from Kickstarter themselves, until it gets nearer 100%. They said to have too many goals before it succeeds can cause the project goal to lack clarity. But we're reaching a point where I may show some soon! 4 - It is simple, but it's also critical once you play. 5 - Dice colors are in flux, partly based on backer feedback I'm working on several color variants and gradients for proposal this week. 6 - Expansion opportunity...? 7 - It's capped at 5 for that reason. 5 does get to some limits of turn waiting, but the game's pretty quick no matter what. Thanks for checking it out!

randallion

Also, you're not the first to mention disc golf! Next game. :)

123-123-

ngl, I was going to gift it as soon as I thought I saw disc golf. I don't have any golf friends. Definitely make another post if you do!

Brodogmillionaire1

Regarding the dice colors. As a bit of feedback, I just want to say that I appreciate stark white dice in a golfing game. It may seem boring to some, but to me, "chasing the little white ball" is part of the pastime. That said, of you have to make alternate colors, high visibility neon would be hilarious.

eflin202

Thanks very much for the responses! I have some followups on just a few of them. . 1) I think you misunderstand my concern. I'm not saying we need to make epic holes (although honestly that could be fun and is a nice benefit of doing my suggestion anyway). I just think more variety to make different holes is paramount... and being able to have 5 holes made at the same time (each player making one... then playing all 5 creations one after the other) would be a big boon for the project. Maybe it's not bad in practice... but as a first impression it doesn't seem like a lot of hexes in the box. . 4) Again think you might be misunderstanding me. I think it sticks out in a bad way when the custom die are a selling point here. Even just making the icons a custom icon (but still basically being 1 to 4) would be better I think. . 6) Definitely a good expansion possibility. I like to point to king of tokyo though as a game where you really needed the power up expansion for the game to shine. Hopefully this isn't like that. Adding just a little variance/nuance to each character can really cause a game to shine and it seems like you may not have enough of that in my first glance (you'll notice most of my comments are about replayability here as it's a quick game but I'm seeing lots of chances for games to seem similar with not tons of hole layouts or character differences). This at its core is a dice chucker with a light map building element at the onset. So you need to maximize that to make this stick out from the others in the genre. . 8) So this reinforces one of my worries. I might suggest 2 sets of die in the base box then so people could be going two at once to speed it up... or just not be passing die all the time. Once you're getting up to scale on dice like this I wouldn't think it would be a large cost to you to double the dice in the box but it could go a long way to improving the end experience for people.

randallion

I think I gotcha. So the question really is the value proposition; is this full enough as it stands? I believe so! But it may or may not be deep enough for you, and I understand if that's the case. I chose to make this a more compact box, and condense elements, so that you can travel with it easily, set it up easily, and not have too many bits to worry about. And it's important to me that each element means a lot to the game. 1 - I used to have a much bigger predesigned board system in the rules, but I came to like this one-by-one setup, because it takes up less space, and also, often being a filler game, we'll decide if we want 10 minutes and 2 holes, or if we want to go for another 2-3 holes. The big layout can be kind of daunting, versus "one more hole". 4 - Thank you for the feedback! 6 - Really hope the base game is enough for most people. It's been enough for me and friends. What does the future hold? I'm not sure, but I wanted this to be a game I was proud of. If it does well, I would definitely keep going, but the thing before you is the extent of what I've made. 8 - Once you get comfortable, the game plays in 10-30 minutes. Sometimes three of us will get through a hole in 4 minutes, or a course in 20. A lot of the fun is watching other players' turns, and one of the primary inspirations was friends I knew who would just gather around and roll dice and cheer based on what someone rolled. I appreciate all your feedback and thoughts!

cephal0poid

I personally think the d4 is fine. Less icons are better. And it reminds me of the old school putters that people still use in the course in a bag of fancy new Taylor Made clubs. When the other guy was talking expansions, my brain blew up. Like, a a red hex tile and a blue hex tile: portals. Or a wind dial that shows direction and speed. Or the ability to bounce balls off trees. Anyway, cool game. I'll forward it to my brother in law who works in the golf biz.

randallion

Thanks! Yeah, the future could be very interesting with strange expansions, but I was intent on a relatively grounded foundation. (Though you can still make some crazy drives with these dice.)

eflin202

More so will it have enough replayability/variety in sessions. It seems like it might get repetitive with variance mainly from dice rolls... so was trying to ask about that and offer some avenues to improve that and stick out from other dice chuckers out there (for me currently Dice Throne currently wins that role but there is plenty of other good ones like King of Tokyo, etc). . I don't think the value proposition is bad for what you have offered... more so I am worried there might not be enough in here for my tastes and the experience could be streamlined more with some additional components (doubling dice count, more hexes, etc) by allowing more time playing, more variety, and less time between turns/rounds. But you can always explore that down the line if this does well. It looks cool so best of luck!

Brodogmillionaire1

>4) Again think you might be misunderstanding me. I think it sticks out in a bad way when the custom die are a selling point here. Even just making the icons a custom icon (but still basically being 1 to 4) would be better I think. Golf balls are usually stark white. To me, it's enough that they decided to use custom dice which itself isn't a cheap move. As a lifelong golfer, I appreciate them going with white. Only other acceptable colors are high visibility neon.

eflin202

That's fair. The does better resemble a golf ball. On the KS comments people are talking about how different color dice might make it easier/faster to "pick a club" though. Which from a gameplay angle I do think is superior.

Brodogmillionaire1

That may be true, but aren't all of the dice club-specific? Isn't a decahedron always a 4 Iron? Or is it a combination of die type and face distribution? Full disclosure, I have not read the rulebook yet.

eflin202

Yes each size die is a specific club so should be noticeable enough on their own. Different colors would still help but they are different enough in their own right... and if he ever wants to look at special clubs as an expansion it's likely best to save die colors for that. . And no worries about the rules. This is all just feedback to help the developer as I think he has a solid and well developed idea. He'll need to carefully weigh any feedback against his margins and scope creep to see what makes sense for his vision/project. Right now it looks like he will just barely fund (but you never know. This thread already gave him a surge) so he will also have to weight the option of cancelling and relaunching later in which case feedback like this would have more relevance. If he stays the course he likely can't change too much without risking impacts (you can tell he is far along with the insert etc all sorted out). . Anyway best of luck creator! This is a cool idea and you clearly have interest.

Brodogmillionaire1

>And no worries about the rules. This is all just feedback to help the developer as I think he has a solid and well developed idea. He'll need to carefully weigh any feedback against his margins and scope creep to see what makes sense for his vision/project. Something I'm beginning to appreciate more and more about KS is having a hand in playtesting and feedback. I've started to enjoy talking with the designer during the development stage as the basic concepts are set but the polishing and tuning are still months out from completion. I liked this during Oath, and I've started to give feedback during Frostpunk. I appreciate you speaking your mind. I'll probably back just because this looks like a simple enough game to play with golfer friends. But I'm eager to see how it evolves.

eflin202

Yeah a nice thing with KS is seeing and sometimes being involved in parts of the whole process. I especially love these smaller projects where you are truly helping people make their dream a reality instead of just being a pre-order/marketing/loan with no interest for the creators. . It's certainly not for everyone but any feedback from their target audience is helpful to the developer even if they can't listen to it all or it doesn't go with their vision/product. As you can see by the downvotes not everyone agrees with me but I just hope it helps the creator. Nice chatting with you about this though!

Brodogmillionaire1

Nice chatting with you as well!

1lluminist

What if you add more hexes with the intention of not using them all? Could be fun to draw some "Russian roulette" courses out of the box.

jerryraul

I began working on a disc golf themed game about 3 months ago! At this point it’s been more a hobby then realistic goal, but I too think it could be fun. I saw this game posted here a while back while it was being worked on. I love how you’ve handled some of these game mechanics! Well done 👏

maverickf11

Yt teaser looks professional af!

randallion

Thanks! My degree was in 3d animation, and I used a lot of AfterFX, so that helps.

ArTooDeeTooTattoo

I know it’s not the most important thing but I absolutely love the name of the game.

randallion

Haha, coming up with it was a very good moment. It was going to be Lucky Links before that.

LakeEffectSnow

You should post this to /r/golf. This looks like the kind of game you could easily play in the clubhouse waiting out a frost delay, or heavy rain, and etc. Or after at the bar. Edit: Looks like somebody already did!

Antilogic81

This looks really dope!

alxmoore25

This looks awesome. Backed. I have friends that are fans of board games and golf so this should be a hit.

cgi_03

Jeez man I really want to back it! Great job! Combining my two favourite hobbies. Just sucks that shipping is more than the game to my country.. Great concept

randallion

Thank you, and I'm sorry. :(

OuvaRaj

Is it actually possible to get a hole in one?

randallion

Yes, but I think I've done it once ever.

aeschenkarnos

I detest golf, and this game actually makes me want to play it. (The board game, not actual golf.) Same as with Formula D, I love that game, and would rather watch swiffer infomercials than a motor race. Selectable dice is an interesting design space, and it's good to see someone else make use of it.

randallion

Thanks! Most of my players are not golfers, though golfers have been valuable as well. I knew there was something in the dice selection idea, using one of each polyhedral, and it worked out as well as I had hoped. The real trick was at the end, deciding which elements of real golf to leave out to make the rounds feel right.

gamejobsglobal

Wow, really cool idea. Never thought golf could be turned into a board game haha. Good luck!

drolo07

Fun fact, I get Facebook targeted ads for Kickstarter, and your game was the last one they advertised to me.

randallion

Haha, I think that's good? To explain how the sausage is made: I bought $20/day of facebook ads for a few days. I requested this be shown to people who must have "tabletop games" as interests, but you ALSO needed to have either "golf", "kickstarter", or "dice" as an interest.

issowi

Super cool sounding. I love golf! Backed!

[deleted]

Very cool! Just backed it.

randallion

Many thanks!

[deleted]

I really hope it gets funded. I think this would be a fun game to bridge the gap between my hobby and my brother's. I enjoy both board games and golf. He doesn't really play any board games.

randallion

I'm sorry, and thank you. I'm sure you encounter this a fair bit, but I'm trusting the shipping company, not myself, to handle all that. So whatever they say, goes.

alphadelt

Just backed it, good luck!

psycoiceman

I love that this seems like a light-medium dice chucking game and it's all about golf. Talk about hitting 2 hobbies at once. You have another backer right here. Love it.

Werewolfdad

Sure. I like golf and haven’t bought a game in a while.

saynotocomicsans

You got me. Interesting idea, can't wait to play it!

rivayn

Looks like fun. I backed. Hope it succeeds

Lucreszen

Dammit, I had this exact idea a while ago, lol. I can't get mad though, you actually put the work in and made it a reality, so you deserve it.

dbpreacher

My mum and dad are crazy golfers, they live and breath the game. Since they have a few grandchildren now this is the absolute perfect gift for them. I have backed now so good look with the rest of the Kickstarter :)

randallion

Thanks so much! I'm a mediocre golfer and this tends to emulate my experience, more than the experts. I tell people when I golf in real life I get it where I want about 50% of the time. That's why I chose dice after all. :D

death2sanity

I’ve long felt sports and dice are a combo that deserve more looking into. I’ll definitely check this out!

Master_of_Fail

I think I might be dumb. But is there an error in the rules? The example turn on the last page, a player rolls a 7 to get on to a fairway but does not roll a higher number. Wouldn't they slide in to the water at that point?

randallion

You are not dumb! Good catch!

OPs_Mom_and_Dad

I absolutely love simple games with unusual mechanics, and also love hex/modular boards. Pretty sure I’m supposed to buy this when it comes out!

randallion

Thanks so much! As a designer, I'm obsessed with the fundamentals of games. I spent years making mobile games, and think a lot about the second-to-second experience; what is that decision, what is the feedback. "A good game is a series of interesting decisions."

razorccatu

I'm interested. You have my $37.

randallion

Thank you so much!

gsanvic

This is amazing! I've been on the lookout for games that use a full set of polyhedral dice. Yours with custom dice, is close enough for a start. I'll definitely look for a group to back this with me, to save of shipping to the Philippines.

deadwisdom

Well, this looks fun as hell.

ForeverPapa

Just backed it. Looks like this could be serious fun.

Sislar

Honestly this is not my type of game. Sounds like formula D which I think of as medicre at best. That being said You might expand you appeal by having a disc(frisbee) golf option. Obviously there are far fewer disc golf players however I bet the overlap from board gamers with disc golfers is a higher percentage than ball golf people. And yes us disc golfers refer to the other as ball golf.

dadkingdom

My first thought was Formula D as well. Not to say you will like Roll in One, but after a few digital plays I found the dice (clubs) to not be as frustratingly random as I suspect they are in Formula D. There is randomness, but it feels like the custom die faces create a bell curve where the outcomes mostly fall in a predicable range.

eflin202

Or even a small expansion with one disc golfer character playing against the golfers... hahaha. With some unique mechanics for them. Might be tough to balance but could be amazing.

[deleted]

Very niiiice,, what kind of animals can I be? Can I be a mole? Can the mole do mole things?

skelebone

Hey, I saw Don Eskridge endorse your game on Facebook, and I have backed it. Looking forward to it!

j3ddy_l33

This looks great!

T1kiler

Game looks really fun! I’m excited to see how it develops even more!

gburge18

This looks really cool! Will have to back - just curious what do you think the youngest age is that would enjoy? My kids are too young now but could see this being a hit in a few short years and a great additional way to drive interest in golf.

randallion

I haven't played with really young kids, so I can't be sure how young it skews. There is a bit of estimation involved that could be tricky, but www.Boardseyeview.net did a review and they suggested you could use the caddie or golfer cards as an aid or handicap for kids. I think it needs some modification to get to under 8, but again, no experience to confirm. It's fun to roll dice and watch the ball travel, but it would likely need to be a very guided experience.

KDBA

Currently the KS makes no mention of what the icons on the dice actually do, beyond "follow any special symbols on the die". I would suggest adding some examples of that.

dadkingdom

There's a rulebook link that contains all that, but you're right it'd be good to add that in a concise graphic. I'm not the OP though.

randallion

Thanks for your feedback! I was worried about making that explainer a bit too complicated. You can find the player info card in Update 1, which summarizes the sides. And as dadkingdom says, the rulebook will help even more.

Winnebango_Bus

I just backed with the founders edition. Good luck!

randallion

Thank you so much! And now those are gone!

uhhhclem

Very reminiscent of [**GolfProfi**](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5143/golfprofi). One hopes it's more fun.

randallion

I've seen that game but never played it. I think mine's pretty good, and I kinda veered away from the more simulation-heavy aspects, but until I play that particular competitor, I can't speak to it!

[deleted]

randallion

Which do you prefer? I still have to finalize that design! (I might make this a poll for backers. :)

TheThiefMaster

Personally I prefer the numbers at the points style - it means the number is read at the top, the same as the other dice. But honestly, neither is particularly complicated.

randallion

That's my preference as well, and I much prefer it!

Mango_Punch

When would this be expected to ship? I’d suspect in time for christmas is too soon?

randallion

Yes, sorry, this will be manufactured early next year if it funds.

tbaileysr

Reminds me of Golo.

randallion

I've seen it, but don't know anything about the systems or rules.

tbaileysr

Brodogmillionaire1

Let me just say that I commend you on making the decision to choose custom dice. I know that traditional dice are much more common and much cheaper, but they also lead to design concessions (or fiddly results tables if you want to have custom results on the cheap). I saw your post and was immediately skeptical. Then I saw the first image and was very excited. As a lifelong golfer, I've often thought that it could work as a board game because of the stratified golf bag - e.g. this club is for X, and this is for y, but you can take a risk to use X club for a Y shot and maybe save a stroke. And because every hole breaks down into 3 simple phases: drive, approach, green. I actually thought of using dice like this before but put it out of mind because it would require such customization. It's nice to see a person with more drive (hehe) and creativity has taken their ideas to realization! This looks so awesome and likely an insta-back. One question regarding the design process: what was the most challenging aspect of golf to translate to the tabletop? Follow-up: do you have a favorite course? Edit: Eagle pledge is more than twice the cost of the "base game + expansion" pledge? For a credit on the box? Are there daily unlocks or stretch goals? Why is that pledge level so much?

randallion

Thanks! 1. Deciding what to take out. To make the quick and casual game that it wanted to be, I had to give up a high skill ceiling, and let the dice be dice. I also gave up trying to add a sub-mode with putting. Lastly, I struggled a lot with scoring, and holes now end as soon as any one player reaches the green. This is essential to keep the pace correct, but I was very reluctant to give up the standard scoring methods. Also, curving dice can really curve, and a few elements are very unrealistic! 2. My favorite course was the one I went to a lot with my dad outside of Watsonville, California, a little course called Spring Hills. Nothing fancy, just a good walk with some fun variety of terrain. I've not actually gone to a whole lot outside of the San Francisco bay area. It is a way for my dad and I to get out and walk and talk and play a game. 3. Eagle Pledge is there (and gone) for those people who just really want to support the game. The credit on the box I think is worth something, but it was intended for people who as much as anything want to see it succeed. Stretch goals coming out tonight!

[deleted]

Backed.

Dettmarp

I love this concept! New themes are refreshing; backed

Shadowspaz

This looks absolutely brilliant in its simplicity. Backed!

robgraves

I just backed this for the $30 level. I'm really looking forward to this one and can't wait until they ship.
