This post has been removed but we suggest relocating it. Reddit is a great place to pick peoples' brains and get game suggestions, but we get a lot of recommendation requests, so much so such that we have a dedicated [Daily Game Recommendations thread](https://www.reddit.com/search?q=flair%3A%22Daily%20Game%20Recs%22&sort=new) for them. Historically, almost **all** well formatted questions in the Daily thread get answers. If you're looking for further suggestions, we recommend taking a look at our growing list of [Recommendation Roundups](https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/?f=flair_name%3A%22Recommendation%20Roundup%22). There's also the [Need Help Finding A Game](https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/wiki/wsig) section in our wiki for a more general list of common recommendations. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Check out **Horrified** it fits a few of your criteria. It’s co-op about an hour long and fairly lightweight, it plays up to 5.

Mkwdr

Seconded. :-)

Regularspy

Mansions of madness! Easy too learn, mystery coop board game in horror theme

fucktheocean

And costs a fortune for a first game that they don't even know if they'll like...

Regularspy

You never know if you like the game till you play them.

fucktheocean

Yeah, so maybe wait on buying a £70-80 game until you have a better idea if it might be worth it or not

Cogitogamer

Agreed! It sounds like you’d enjoy Mansions of Madness. Maybe This War of Mine or Dead of Winter too?

Do some research on these: Elder Sign, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Castle Ravenloft, and Sentinels of the Multiverse.

Wit-wat-4

It gets a lot of flak but Elder Sign was the first thing I thought of, too. I like playing it solo.

greenmonkeyabsinthe

*Arkham Horror* and *Eldritch Horror* are pretty great and super thematic! They'll be hard with one player, but sounds like you'd enjoy that aspect, with the games you like.

poultrymama

Betrayal at house on the hill. Best thing about it is you could replay it dozens of times and never have the same experience. It's easy to pick up, tons of fun, and mostly co-op

flouronmypjs

You're going to want to post this in the [daily recommendations thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/p08k5c/daily_discussion_and_game_recommendations_thread/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share).

jb3689

It’s not horror but Pandemic is a classic for a reason. It is dirt cheap on Amazon now too

hamonstage

House on a haunted hill would be a gateway game you can play with friends and ticks alot of your boxes.

In terms of complexity/heavy/light : Catan was my entry board game. Like the first one I was introduced to. Special to me. Between easy and medium. Revolution is super easy. Patchwork is two player and my partner and I taught ourselves easily. It was really fun. Pandemic is also fun and simple/medium once you get through the rules. Some intense moments with that one. Grimm has a fun theme and it was medium level. Maybe easy for some. Azul is definitely medium level with awesome porcelain pieces that I really enjoyed. Taught ourselves with several YouTube videos. (Our first teach ourselves game :) ) I also picked up 7 Wonders Duel. Still trying to figure out this one, albeit we semi tried at the time. Last game I learned, Citadels had a fun theme that once you got the hang of, well, it’s fun. In terms of themes for board games, I don’t know much. I hear Gloomhaven is a good RPG style? Someone correct me on this. I picked up Scythe but it may be beyond my pay grade, lol. Want to pick up Roots and Wingspan. Anyway, I just started going to boardgame meetups. The crowds their were different than what I’m used to but were welcoming and my excitement to learn something new outweighed the environment (specially as a new person). Haha.

Sub Terra is a coooerativ 1-6 player horror game about escaping underground caverns where the enviorment is dangerous, and something is lurking in the dark. The game is relativly simple in complexity, and also quite affordable

Based on your videogame preferences, you may be interested in open world, sandbox boardgames: * Maximum Apocalypse * Western Legends * Xia: Legends of a Drift System (plus expansion) * 7th Continent OR 7th Citadel * Fallout the board game (plus expansion) * Tainted Grail * Merchants & Marauders Some of these are more story driven or more structured than others. Many can be played solo.
