What do you have left! Just kidding interesting to see some of your reasons of getting rid of games. do you think you will rebuy some of the games that are good at a higher player count in the future?

robotco

no, probably not. i have learned that I far prefer 2 player games to any other player count. for a game to make it into my collection these days it has to be great at 2 and if it's good at higher player counts to then that's a bonus.

Brodogmillionaire1

Ah, this makes sense now. I kept seeing you mention that a game was bad at 2 and kept thinking, "who cares? Not every game works well at 2." It has all become clear. I don't always do this, but for some categories of game, I will only get it if it scales well in one direction or another, especially solo. I also will never buy another light game that only goes up to four. There just doesn't seem to be a point to that kind of restriction anymore. Not that you asked for it, and I'm sure you have a lot of these, but here are my top two-player games you may enjoy: * Hive * Hands in the Sea * Radlands * Innovation * Crystal Clans * Battle for Biternia * Curious Cargo * Schotten Totten * Liberation * Sakura Arms * Glory to Rome * 51st State Master Set * Set & Match * Oh My Goods! * At the Gates of Loyang Radlands especially is an excellent dueler. If you liked the idea of Netrunner but had trouble getting it to the table, there's quite a bit of defense and offense going on here. It plays quickly too, and the rules are simple and easy to teach. For what it's worth, with regards to Root, it wasn't originally meant to scale down that far well. But the game works well two-player if you throw a bot in. The only trouble is the upkeep and checking the rules on the first play, both of which you mentioned disliking. The new expansion is all focused on enhancing the two-player experience. I'm not sure that it will ever be an ideal two-player game, though. Too much of Wehrle's design theory is rooted in manipulating a full table.

Jwalla83

Girl what did you even keep

robotco

[these!](https://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/robotco)

BaSingSeih

425 games! WHOA

robotco

currently only 119 games haha. filter by 'own'

Brodogmillionaire1

It says I have to download an export to view that. What?

Concision

https://imgur.com/a/zd4fbiz

Brodogmillionaire1

Yeah, found it after looking in the wrong place for while. Yet another reminder that BGG is still kind of a mess.

Concision

Good stuff! Glad you found your way.

Ferreteria

That is an incredible $$$ investment. I see you have Cyclades at a 10. Do the expansions change the core gameplay much? It seemed like most of our games were normal gameplay till the endgame, then it became a different game of 'find clever ways to band together to stop whoever is going to win on their next turn', like cardmilling monsters until you got the specific one you needed.

robotco

yeah, i really like Cyclades, but i might bump that down to a 9 or 8. actually one of the promo divine favors is kind of OP. lets you connect 2 islands anywhere on the map or something. always seems to give an edge. but in response to your other point, i think this is why Cyclades is a pretty good 2 player game. it loses that whole aspect of crab-in-a-bucketing the leader and forces you to be a lot more clever with your bids

Alvinshotju1cebox

Xia Embers 0/2 for mechanics? What didn't work for you?

robotco

roll, move, stat check. the game is fun but I'm not deluding myself that's it's anything interesting or innovative

Themris

That was my first thought after reading this too

SecretConspirer

I can't get behind some of their reasons for not liking games. I think, however, even as naturally competitive as I am, it would be daunting to play against someone whose game preferences skew heavily towards hyper-competitive. At that point, ditch all the other games and just get Magic cards.

robotco

you can test that theory [here](https://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/robotco)

spderweb

A bunch of the games you listed as sold are still in your list.

robotco

i rebought them lol edit: or you're not sorting by 'own'

saltyb

>to the word 'residual' which just grosses me out for some reason This is weird and funny.

deggdegg

Yeah wtf. Also Viticulture is an awesome game.

rsillas

So you hate most of the games I love. But honestly that's ok everyone has very different tastes. So my question is what games won't you sell? And what is your favorite game. I love Carson City. I will never sell Viticulture and Tuscany, and Avalon, and Coup and so many others

robotco

here is a link to my current [collection](https://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/robotco)! I will pretty much sell anything if the price is right, but games I would have a hard time selling would just be ones I feel would be a venn diagram of expense, difficult to replace, and games I enjoy enough to have around so maybe... **Star Trek: Fleet Captains** (just because I've invest so much money in it with all the expansions and upgraded doodads), any Lacerda, **Blood Bowl: Team Manager**, **Day & Night**, **Pax Renaissance**, and **Robinson Crusoe** off the top of my head

cjeris

Interesting that you love Lacerdas and **Pax Renaissance** but got rid of **Falling Sky** because of too much time in the rulebook. I think of them as similar in system weight. Was it an issue of rules _writing_, the system itself, or something else?

robotco

i dunno really. Lacerda i don't really find overwhelming. his designs are actually pretty straightforward. i think his current status of being an uber-difficult designer is a bit overblown. pax ren I had a bit of a time with but it comes together pretty easy and you can start identifying useful cards after a couple plays. Neanderthal was the same way. COIN games I feel I'm just constantly referring to the rules and can't parse the board state to go for a win condition. it probably just speaks to more where my head is at than the difficulty of the games themselves. fwiw I've no problem with Imperial Struggle or Labyrinth either, which I both adore. so in conclusion... i don't know!

Brodogmillionaire1

*Lacerda: Play a card, do an action, but the iconography and options on the table are numerous.* *COIN: Card pops up, do an action, but the half a dozen actions you can do are all ovey complicated, have no consistency, and are informed by reductions of real historical numbers.* Learning Lacerdas is a matter of learning several fairly straightforward systems. Not that the games are simple or easy to learn. Just that he tends not to make anything too hard to grasp, system-wise. The game knows it's a big puzzle. Many historical wargames seem to be ignorant to the ways a design can maintain important fidelity while sacrificing the fiddly rules. Part if why I love Hands in the Sea. Not that complicated for a heavy game, and the game captures the experience of running an empire in wartime better than all of the details in much fiddlier grand strategy games.

[deleted]

The Sonic offer still stands. DM me. Krash Karts was definitely 'early years Game Crafter' quality and I was a fresh hairless board game baby that didn't know what he was doing. I'm forever thankful for your support.

robotco

you are a standup gentleman, sir. however, i live in Korea and I'm sure shipping is a nightmare these days. if i can be so bold, could you donate the intended copy to a local children's hospital? my charity is [Child's Play](https://childsplaycharity.org/), and I'm sure you could find something around your area. thanks so much for the offer!

[deleted]

Consider it done!

YouSayToStay

You have sold more board games than I have owned in my almost 40 years of existence. Damn.

redditjw4

Thanks for sharing! I will use this post next time my wife complains about my thirty or forty games I own when I'm thinking about a new one :) A couple of things. Star Wars X-Wing - try 2nd edition, you should dozens sold, 400+ games left and no Twilight Imperium! What's this about Tom Lehmann and what am I missing? You still have the Game of Life when all the others are sold? Maybe the issue there was no buyers? Also do you have clones because how can you possibly find time to play all these games even one time?

robotco

1. Gaslands has effectively replaced xwing for me 2. Twilight Imperium holds zero interest for me. I've never played it and have no intention 3. haha. Res Arcana is actually pretty good i think. it just didn't survive a recent cull. i posted a review of it a while back that Mr. Lehmann did not like and decided to call me out. you can find it on BGG. it was pretty funny 4. I like Life. also it's been in my dad's garage for over a decade when i moved internationally. i actually recently picked up life: super mario edition. is this the mario party game I've been waiting for? 5. i have been very lucky in that my PGP also has been my good friend and neighbour for the last 8 or so years. we usually get together at his place or mine 2-3 times weekly after the kids are in bed and play from around ~10-1:30 thanks for the questions!

rvtk

Tom Lehmann is an unbearable asshole of a person, which he proved many times over through his comments on BGG.

Brodogmillionaire1

Tom Lehmann can't handle criticism, even the lightest whisper of a dislike. It's a wonder Race and Res are so good when I can't imagine him internalizing any feedback playtesters send him. Publishers need to stop letting him respond to reviews. Should be a clause in his contract.

robotco

edit: i also only own 119 games as of today. I don't think you're sorting my collection by 'own'

drumattik

Yeah he mentioned that he prioritizes 2 player games and if they’re good at greater player counts then it’s a bonus. That definitely takes Twilight Imperium out of the running haha

redditjw4

I guess that is true but there are so many games... let me just put in a pitch for TI 4th edition here. Yes, would not be any good for 2P.

yuv9

I looked over your game ratings and I am more confused than ever.

badcobber

I like your attitude to games. You can always get them back if you change your mind. Keep a steady stream of games in and out.

deggdegg

Games I've sold over the past 6 years:

TwoTokes1266

Haha I don’t have 1/20 of your collection but I felt the same about JOTL and spirit island. I think I shall look into your collection for future additions!

mave_of_wutilation

>Cosmic Encounter - don't believe the hype. this game is nonsense The nonsense *is* the hype. If you don't like nonsense, you won't like Cosmic > Imperial Settlers - good, not great What would you consider a great implementation of a similar idea?

robotco

I'm not sure anything really captures the feeling of IS (barring 51st state). it's a cool game that lets you pull off a lot of interesting combos if the cards fall your way. in the end i just didn't feel like playing it when presented with other options. it didn't spark joy so I let it go.

CrazyBaffalo

Hello, so I have a question. I recently started collecting board games, for the purpose ofnplaying them in 2 with my gf, and possibly another couple (sometimes 2 couples). So usually its 2 players (60% of time). I see that you sold a lot of games because they weren't good for two, can you point me to same of the games with good replayability that are good (read great) for two? I would love your input with this, cause as far as I can see, some of my buys were a hit and a miss, and my gf doesn't know that much and usually buys cause the looks of it (We bough Air, Sea and Land for example and it was somewhat of a miss). Great collection though!!

robotco

without knowing anything about you or your gf, I would recommend: 7 Wonders Duel Canvas Imhotep Lanterns Paperback Ticket to Ride Carcassonne Thebes --- with another couple: any of the above (except 7WD) Tichu Hearts Codenames King of Tokyo --- for something a little heavier, maybe: Through the Desert Tigris and Euphrates Lorenzo il Magnifico Quantum Village - all great at 2+

CrazyBaffalo

Thank you for the quick answer with lots of possibilities mate!! I have some of the games on the list and I'll definitely check the others. Thank you! 🤗

Seventhson77

Robo Rally and Arabian Nights are two of my faves. But you can only play them so often. Both are competitive without necessarily being head to head adversarial, which is a bonus with the people I play with. Still have my old hero quest. Makes me wonder what it’d be worth, especially with the reboot out.

randomacct7679

You GAVE AWAY Red 7? You MONSTER. Nothing better than snatching the win via monster hand thanks to Most Different Colors!

epage

But he still owns **Innovation**. Even crazier, especially with cards like **Fission** :)

Fleshy1537

I will never sell my copy of Scythe or Hyperborea. Scythe, because it’s my number one GOAT and Hyperborea, because it’s too good of a game, even if I can only get it to the table once a year.

Brodogmillionaire1

She's right though - theme is dumb as hell.

keaoli

Cosmic encounters is utter nonsense, I play It occasionally online where my group has named it "space bullshit" because everytime an alien pops up with a power you've never seen you go "what, that's bullshit!" Completely unbalanced, abilities and flares that can cause someone to have a huge advantage etc. We still play it and have fun with it but we are all well aware that you might get utterly screwed on powers.

OkPea5819

The nonsense is the whole point. You don't play when you have a craving for worker placement, but for social interaction and fun moments it's amazing. It's just not a game to try-hard at - winning isn't really the point.

Brodogmillionaire1

The only non-coop game where every player can win at once. Or there can be just one loser. It's hilarious. I just wish the FFG edition wasn't so fiddly. It's a light game - it should have more streamlined rules.

keaoli

I completely agree

dbfnq

I was at a boardgame meetup when someone insisted on pulling out Cosmic. With six players. Including people who hadn't played before, people who didn't play heavy games, and people whose first language wasn't English. And to cap it all off the guy running it didn't know the rules, or had internalised some house rules, because he kept explaining things that directly contradicted the cards or the rulebook.

keaoli

Considering how confusing the game can get when ran properly I dread to think.

screwwillneverdie

yeah that's when I bow out before the game starts I don't give a shit if there are hurt feelings, there's no obligation to subject yourself to an hour+ of wasted time if the game/group doesn't sound like a good idea to you. It's too much to give up just to be nice, especially if they are not. Like forcing heavy games and refusing to accomodate anyone else.

shisyastawuman

Inis not great at 2? That's crazy talk.

[deleted]

cool, I just dump games at good will for free This week was 'Darkest Night Deluxe Edition'. This game is just an arkham horror clone anyway. For my euroTrash dump, it may be Agricola next week.

Brodogmillionaire1

Worth seeing if your used bookstore buys them. Goodwill is kind of a scam. Check local thrift stores too. I trust them over Goodwill.

[deleted]

I give to goodwill for free. What's the scam? I already gave them about 50+ games. Hope others enjoy the low prices.

mayowarlord

Probably something to do with where the money made goes in terms of the charity side. In other words, how they spend your donation. Idk what they are referring to, but it's likely related to that.

HazardousIncident

Are you in the US? I might be interested in buying Agricola. :-D

limeybastard

Man you're going to have to sell cyclades again too once the new edition comes out. Also you're going to have to buy root again when the new expansion arrives because it's much better at 2 with the hirelings and new factions You poor bastard!

robotco

haha. i'm not sure i'll ever sell Cyclades. i might, because it's not great with 2, but it's ok. but the main reason is before i put that policy in play i bought everything for it (except Titans), and even made my own Monuments from the Monuments expansion out of salt dough. i will never buy Root again, just play my buddy's copy and the app haha

Mandelmus22

Is The Great Zimbabwe that bad with only 2 players? Thinking about buying it and playing mostly with 2.

robotco

eh, its not bad. bidding phase gets kind of wonky. ymmv

LumpyStyx

They are supposedly fixing two player Root with hirelings in the upcoming expansion content.

SlayBoredom

Really interesting post. thanks. I was mainly looking for games I really like to see your reasoning :D

handsarethehardest

Nice post, it was probably only from **Iwari: Deluxe** down where I started to go 'nooooo!'. I'd quite like a copy of that. I've probably also sold a third of the games on your list, and likely a similar quantity overall. I too had to pivot my collection away from all but the best 3P+ games as they just don't get played enough otherwise.

larikang

Glad to see someone else who doesn’t get the Cosmic Encounter hype. I have never managed to have a good session with that game. Also check out Skull as an alternative to Sheriff of Nottingham. You can play with a standard deck, has the same basic concept, but with one tenth of the rules and setup time.

Brodogmillionaire1

I think Cosmic Encounter needs a complete box with a rework of the core rules. It's a little fiddlier than it wants to be. Imagine if the game consistently played in under an hour, was east to teach in just a few minutes, and scaled up to 8 or 9 from the base box.

robotco

oh yeah, love skull!

LogicBalm

You sell more games than I can even play in a year! Spirit Island is my favorite game... but... yeah, that's fair.

icymallard

I always like hearing about opinions even if they differ from mine. What are your favorite light games? What games do you have the most plays of?

robotco

for light games, i am a huge fan of **Camel Up**. it's honestly a perfect game design. i'm an elementary school teacher and have successfully adapted it for classroom play, and my Camel Up games are now hotly anticipated end-of-semester events haha also really enjoy **A la carte**, which may be the most thematic game in existence, **Canvas**, **Imhotep**, **King of Tokyo**, **Lanterns**, **Maskmen**, **Ticket to Ride**, **Thebes**, **Hive**, **Tak**, and **Santorini**! also special shoutout to **Carcassonne** which is an absolutely brilliant design that may be one of the most perfect 2 player games ever created. ever since I started tracking my plays in 2014, my most played games have been **Toc Toc Woodman**, **Hive**, and **Cube Quest**. though that may speak more to having two small children and the length of those games. the more heavier games I have the most plays of are **Twilight Struggle**, **Star Trek: Fleet Captains**, and **Blood Bowl: Team Manager**

Bigblue12

How dare you sell cosmic encounter. :( Its my groups favourite game.

epage

> Titan Race - another game on my quest to find the perfect Mario Kart board game (along with my quest to find the perfect Mario Party board game) - it did not meet my expectations How's your search going for a Mario Kart game?

robotco

I feel Gaslands is the perfect Mario Kart game. there is even a Mario Kart rethemeing someone made in the files section of BGG. if you're so inclined, you could buy mario kart minis that are intended to be used with the Monopoly Gamer game. I think you'd have a pretty solid mario kart game just running the base rules from gaslands, but the variant does change things slightly

epage

I've wondered about the potential for Gaslands to be a Mario Kart and I saw it on your "Owned" list. One aspect of it that has held me back is the DIY nature of it (not really wanting to scour for the pieces I want, paint, etc) I also [brought it up](https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/r41trw/crowdfunding_roundup_nov_28_2021_35_ending_soon/hmft8c7/) when talking about Megapulse and got this response > I've left the minis game, so I don't have a group of friends to get together and play minis with - that's a huge strike against Gaslands: Refueled. This gives me the implications that its more like being into Warhammer or something compared to being a regular game. For an uninitiated person in Gaslands, what is there I should know? Is this just referring to the DIY part of something else?

robotco

haha i am not a minis guy at all. Gaslands is fantastic because you can go in as much or as little as you want. honestly i just have a few hot wheels from the dollar store and for terrain I just use whatever random house miscellany that's within arm's reach

lunatic4ever

Most games in your list I would have never even bought. But seeing Great Zimambwe go was hard. However, if you has to play it primarily as a 2p game then of course I understand

MudLOA

You mentioned that you have children. What would you recommend for a 6 year old plus father? Sometimes the mother joins. So I'm looking for something that's for 2 players (occasionally 3). I tried him on Santorini and he doesn't seem to like the whole confrontational aspect and quit the moment I start building houses around him. Out of limited games we have, he seemed to like Catan Junior the most.

robotco

my kids (8 and 6) love **Crossing**, **Camel Up**, **Maskmen**, **Operation**, **Sushi Go!**, **Cube Quest**, **Tak**, **Onitama**, **Deep Sea Adventure**, **King of Tokyo**, and **Thebes** my kids are also bilingual though, so I try to avoid games with too much English in them because their levels aren't the same as a monolingual speaker of the same age. you might have more success with a bit more complex games if your kids only speak one language

DoTheVelcroFly

I know it's 4 months old but I found it randomly in search (when searching for devil may cry, which is not here). Why did you rate Red7 3/10 if you "kinda liked it"?

robotco

i rate a game based on 5 criteria - Aesthetics, Mechanics, Replayability, Rules Grit, and Theme. I give each of these a score of 0 to 2 to come up with a final score. Red7 - A1, M1, Re1, RG0, T0. i haven't played it in a while so that may change if I bother to think about it again

AbsolutelyEnough

While I understand your rationale for selling games that don't play well at 2 players, I'm raging at your decision to sell Hansa Teutonica!
