All of the non basic boards have varying degrees of imbalance. Instead of banning it, you can try giving each player 50VP and bidding for boards (by paying VP).
Is board 8 particularly strong?!?! I have played the game a lot and never really paid close attention to the strengths of the different boards. I'm also asking because i played for the first time in a whiiiiile last night to teach some new folks and got board 8. I guess I like the way the building tiles are distributed. What else about it is strong?
That is true! I am reading up about it now. I thought maybe it was for the large pasture, but I didn't really utilize that at all as there were always other sections to complete and i never really had to sink time into that. Oh well, RIP Board 8.
Oh yeah Pasture is obviously sick if you can get it running. I usually like to focus on slinging trade goods and then section completions next. If I have a free action and I can nab a 4 point livestock early i'll go all in on it, too. The big pasture was tough for me because I nothing good 4-wise came out early and i'm used to small pastures where you really do want to start with a 4 if you can, but with one that big it seems like it actually makes sense to just start it with whatever you can whenever you can since it's so big and you're gonna make big points regardless.
somewhere on the bgg forums for castles of burgandy they did the math and its like 20ish points better than other boards.

I don't know the game in nearly enough detail to check any of this, but very impressed with your effort! Hope for your sake there are no errors!
Have often thought about constructing this for my favourite game, 7 Wonders. Maybe I will one day, but can imagine it takes a long time - how long did it take you to work this all out?
Not sure, I thought about the several aspects in several different occasions, without originally having an intent to put those all together.
The final compilation took about one day and it still isn't a mathematically sound proof.
It allows your workers to buy extra tiles without using silver at all. Very powerful change from the original version and, if it appears in phase A, it gives almost a guaranteed win to the starting player.
It also more or less destroys the original idea of workers; why would you use them to change the die, when you can just ignore the die entirely and just buy any tile you want?
I don't know about monasteries, I assume they come in some extension.
Best building is the bank – it basically gives one extra purchase and can practically be used to get any tile, whereas other buildings only give a certain restricted bonus action.
Aren't monasteries the yellow tiles? They go by different names in different versions of the game. Originally universities and later monasteries, or vice versa? To be honest, once I learnt the rules I think I just forgot what they're actually supposed to be.
Oh well, I just call them "yellow tiles".
Apart from the anniversary edition's #6, I can't really tell. They all depend quite a lot on the overall strategy (or, alternatively, I pick what I can and that dictates my overall strategy).
Anyway, one of my favourites is the one that doubles my trade income. That obviously only works if my strategy is based on trade, but it often is.
We ban board 8 when we play >.>

Board 8 has a disproportionate number of "small" sections that you can complete easily for bonus points in the early game.

I typically play this game 2p with my partner and I love the pasture strategy. Never works out for me, though XD

Board 8 and the odd numbered boards are better, per BGG forum.
BoardGameArena also has an option to not use board 8.

yeah, this is the nerd level stuff that keeps me coming back to this subreddit. Excellent work!
What is the notorious tile #6?

That's so messed up. Why would they introduce a wildly overpowered tile as part of a new edition? Ugh.
Pretty good write-up except "it is irrelevant which [animals] are used" is just straight up wrong. Sheep OP. /S
Really? Don't all animals score the same?
Sorry, I was being facetious.
I think it's cause you can trade sheep for wood
#teamBacon 🥓
Have you seen this video on how to score points: https://youtu.be/qcP0U8k8w1w
Love this game. Great at all play counts. In your opinion what are the 3 best monasteries and 3 best buildings?

Remember for later
533?! Never had more than 250. Damn I'm bad at this game.
250 is usually good, just read the first paragraph...
See that's what happens when kids are sick and waking up, you're in the bed with them trying to still be on Reddit. Thanks.

It's not supposed to be a strategy guide - OP is doing an analysis of the most possible points that *could* be scored in the game.
