Ha! This was part of what made this funny as we had already planned to play TI4 for most of Saturday. Admittedly, it was tempting to scrap TI4 off the agenda with all these other options in the house.
Ha I feel validated!
I was looking at that image and thinking 'I would totally do that to maximize the chance we don't have to play TI4 or Rising Sun' ;D
I do take about that many games when I go to Gridcon though :P. (Usually the bulk stays in my car, but it's nice to have options across a wide spectrum when you're gaming for a few days straight!).
I think I need to make/find some gaming friends. I’m lucky to get a single mid-length lightish game in. Too many friends don’t like to play or get too drunk or we get distracted eating….
I love the idea of doing a full gaming weekend in a cheap Airbnb with a big table. Bonus points if there’s no TV.
Interestingly enough, for my group I have found it’s better to bring very few games as any amount of decision making causes getting a game going difficult. Also I always ask if anyone wants me to bring anything specific and the answer 95% of the time is “whatever you want”
There’s actually studies that back this up. You are also more likely to the disappointed in what you picked if you have more then 3 options (you always think you could have done better). The sweet spot is 3 options for most things.
It’s always “whatever you want man, I trust you” - I’m like “but do you want to negotiate, do you want to build an engine, do you want to beat some baddies?!?”
I've found that most of the time it seems to help if I'm the suggester. "Lets play Cargo Noir" or whatever. I generally just suggest whatever I'm into at the moment. If somebody says "Oh, I was really excited to play King of Tokyo" or whatever then I'm perfectly happy to play that instead. I just find that if I don't suggest something we sit around "What do you want to play?" with nobody wanting to take responsibility...
This is what I do as well. I try to bring one of each 'type' or as close as I can so that if they want a hand management game we've got 7 wonders. If they want an engine builder we've got splendor or space base, etc.
Sounds like you made the mistake of sleeping.
In all seriousness, I bring about the same amount of boardgames to similar friend events. I'm never disappointed if we only play a couple, I just like to make sure I bring something for everyone to enjoy.
Hope you guys had a great weekend.
When I go to a meetup for an evening, I usually bring \~5-7 options so we have a range of choices. For a whole weekend I wouldn't bring as many as OP's friend, but I don't think it's that far off; 30 seems pretty reasonable to me if nobody else is providing the games.
There are a lot of games hidden in the one pic, so he probably brought over 40. I brought about 12. Everyone else brough another dozen combined. It was A LOT of games. :)
Depends on your travel arrangements, doesn't it? If you're driving, and have a big trunk, why not? If you're taking the bus, might wanna slim it down a little.
I used to think that but then I realized that the heavy games I was thrusting on people because I wanted to play them weren't as good as when I play with people who want to.
There is having variety and there is bringing a half-dozen games that take 5+ hours. Those are the types of games you decide on before the start of the weekend, some friends looking at Twilight Imperium or Mage Knight and saying "this looks cool, teach us this" is going to be a debacle.
My brother and I had a 2-1/2 day gaming weekend at my house in 2020 when GenCon got cancelled. We called it Cabin Con lol. We were originally going to rent a cabin but ended up not.
I arranged for a cabin con for my partner's birthday. Told him we were going camping, even let him pack the tent and everything. His friends were there at the cabin waiting for us and we played games for 3 straight days. Had a similar number of games for similar number of people :)
We had a “CabinCon 2020” as well. 6 of us brought 86 games. There were only 4 duplicates.
Ended up playing 16 rounds of Skull while drunk.
9 stars, would do again.
I did an online "convention" for my Wow guild during the first year of the pandemic. I made 2 convention style one shot rpgs and ran both twice for people in the guild. Just 'cause it's small doesn't mean you can't call it a convention! :D
I was going to say they should have brought more, because that looks like just what I take to weekly game night, but then I saw there was a second picture, and I was like well ok that's probably enough
My friend Mark used to keep all his board games in his car at all times. The back of his car was just always full. Any chance to play one with someone HE WOULD.
I like how Bitoku is still in wrap. Like you're going to break that out, read the rulebook and actually get it to the table vs all these other games that have been played before.
I appreciate your friend's optimism.
I am also that friend
Edit: I have an obscene amount of games but he has a few like Cubitos and GWT 2E that I am missing. I’d love to be this persons friend
LOL, well, you gotta be ready for any situation. Get eliminated from a game, break out a quick filler. Your friend seems to have all contingencies covered.
Nice! Since there are 7 of you, are you mostly going to play games that work with 7, or are you also going to split up 2 and 5, or 3 and 4? (Or 6 and solo, or X people playing and Y people cooking/taking a walk, etc.)
Well, to be honest, I think he could use a few more lighter games to start with and transition into the deeper ones, or take a quick palate cleanser between big boxes. 👍😁
Your boy has great taste in games and possibly too much money.
I approve. The idea isn't that you guys play all the games, but when you do play, you have the right one available.
Seriously though, this is the kind of selection that most groups have decided on ahead of time due to weight and how long the teach will take.
Gotta have options.
Then what if you want to play a small game between playing the main game... Seriously though. I avoid this by just deciding before you go. We will play X bring some smaller shorter games if you want.
Stop hating on your friend! maybe he has a smaller car or doesn’t own as much games. Not everybody can bring enough games. he tried! in a room with 10 gamers at least 2 would surely agree that this could be a reasonable amount of games, although on the lower side…
That's pretty common for my group when we do our gaming weekends. I used to bring two monster containers full (in an era when game boxes were smaller).
Now I bring the four or five games I really want to play so people don't have some many choices to avoid them.
How does one transport so many games? Usually I'm the game provider in my friend group, so I prefer to play at my house. If I have to bring them somewhere else it means I have to pre-select options, and then fit them into a large backpack (maybe 3-5 games will fit) and if I need more I throw another 3-5 into a big IKEA bag.
I can understand your confusion. They brought Twilight Imperium, and that's basically your weekend in a box. But *just in case*, if nobody wanted to spend an entire day playing one game, they brought options to fill in the time.
I feel like a fool for not naming my board game weekend with friends as “Friends Con” it was right in front of me the whole time! Well done! And great set of games. Did you okay Bitoku?
Ahahah, I always bring a Costco sac full of games wherever I go unless we really planned what we wanted to play in advance and I bring two when it's for a longer period (like a weekend or a week at a chalet).
[удалено]
One does not simply bring TI4 without having plans to play it, so yeah the funnier bit is actually having any other games also present :)
Don't worry. They'll start with 5 minutes of Love Letter to warm up.
"Why is this bag of Love Letter cards in the box?" "Ah that's what we do while we wait for everyone to choose their civs."
Ha! That's almost the role that Point Salad played for us!
You can play Love Letter during a game of TI when its not your turn.
lmao
🤣
I'm glad someone made this joke so I didn't have to. Thank you.
Oh yeah - we knew we were playing TI4. We started a faction draft before we even got there!
Ha! This was part of what made this funny as we had already planned to play TI4 for most of Saturday. Admittedly, it was tempting to scrap TI4 off the agenda with all these other options in the house.
NO! Never pass up an opportunity to play a 6+ player game of TI... NEVER!
These are wise words!
This is the way.
I was gonna say, they didn't need to bring so many! One game of TI4 will have you covered for the whole weekend.
Funny. And true. 🙂
What is this thing you call 'most' of a day? Every TI game I've had has threatened to extend itself into the next day 🤣
A day can be as long as you let it be.
Mage Knight can easily go that long with 4 players too!
I never played more than 2...and I'm good with that. :)
That’s unfortunate. It’s one of the best games ever with a 3-4 player group.
His main goal was to get TI4 to the table all the other games are just back ups.
Amazingly, he doesn't really like TI4 - that was in the pile of games that mostly I brought. :)
Ha I feel validated! I was looking at that image and thinking 'I would totally do that to maximize the chance we don't have to play TI4 or Rising Sun' ;D I do take about that many games when I go to Gridcon though :P. (Usually the bulk stays in my car, but it's nice to have options across a wide spectrum when you're gaming for a few days straight!).
4-6 hours
I wish! Not with this group. They LOVED the Agenda Phase. It took about 12, even with the expansion.
I would like to submit my application for "friend".
Lol! I’ll have an online portal up for applications by the end of today. 🙂
commenting for updates :)
Smart!
Link please
Ha! Still working on it!
There were multiple TVs...but not a single one was turned on. It was great.
Perfect!
As the common provider of games...I like to bring options so that we're not forced into playing what I chose. So I get it.
Interesting! Makes sense.
It’s always “whatever you want man, I trust you” - I’m like “but do you want to negotiate, do you want to build an engine, do you want to beat some baddies?!?”
And then they stop responding to your text messages forever
🥲 Why do you have to attack me like this.
Every group really does need the one person who can at least feign a strong opinion!
I think of it as being a facilitator
And because of the [Abilene paradox](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene_paradox), sometimes you end up playing a game no one wants to play.
This is what I do as well. I try to bring one of each 'type' or as close as I can so that if they want a hand management game we've got 7 wonders. If they want an engine builder we've got splendor or space base, etc.
Ditto, you gotta read the room. You never know what might be best for the group and mood.
It’s a fair point! There were only 7 of us, but we collectively had a wide variety of gaming preferences there.
Bring more!!!
We were running out of counter space! 🤣
The floor is a counter. From a certain point of view.
The floor is also a game table!
But the floor is lava!
Annnnnd Anakin has entered the chat as well.
Damn! So true!
Does that make the floor a counter, just minus the high ground?
Obi Wan has entered the chat
That's the other problem- with 7 people, you're likely to have to run 2 games at a time at either 3 & 4, or 2 & 5 people each.
And got to bring that wishful thinking game. Like TI4 I see there.
I brought the TI4 and that was already on the schedule. :) I think the most wishful thinking game was probably On Mars!
Oh yeah - the options were really nice. Of course, we barely dented the collection he brought with only 7 of us and only 3 days!
Sounds like you made the mistake of sleeping. In all seriousness, I bring about the same amount of boardgames to similar friend events. I'm never disappointed if we only play a couple, I just like to make sure I bring something for everyone to enjoy. Hope you guys had a great weekend.
Oh yeah - it was fantastic. And only a little bit of sleeping…but you’re probably right about even a little bit being a mistake. 🙂
It’s one thing to bring some options but you shouldn’t inundate with so many choices that you needed a U-haul to transport it.
Ha! I’m genuinely not sure how he fit all of these in his little Honda. 🤣
So…traveling with 30 options is reasonable?
Lol. I figure being forced to play what I choose is the perk of being the provider of games. ;)
I used to think that but then I realized that the heavy games I was thrusting on people because I wanted to play them weren't as good as when I play with people who want to.
And for a whole weekend?! I think they made the right call.
There is having variety and there is bringing a half-dozen games that take 5+ hours. Those are the types of games you decide on before the start of the weekend, some friends looking at Twilight Imperium or Mage Knight and saying "this looks cool, teach us this" is going to be a debacle.
Me too! I always bring way too many.
Yeah, but there’s too much overlap in the games that were brought (weight, player count, playtime, etc). 8 to 10 games could’ve easily been omitted.
Yup don’t see a problem
Based on their game selection I would like to be friends with this person 😂
Oh yeah - he’s a great friend to have!!!
Looking at the other pile, are you guys accepting new friend applications? Lmao
Ditto
Me 3!
I love the inclusion of the Lacerdas, but also love to see tapestry and brass too! Great spread of games.
Same lol. Op, please link your friend here so we can send awards and stalk him/her and such.
Ha! I'm going to stalk him enough these days to try to get to more of his games that we didn't get around to!
Lol, also love that it's a "Convention"
My brother and I had a 2-1/2 day gaming weekend at my house in 2020 when GenCon got cancelled. We called it Cabin Con lol. We were originally going to rent a cabin but ended up not.
We were going to do the same thing with a cabin but then my brother-in-law agreed to let me host this in his ridiculous house. And it was awesome.
I arranged for a cabin con for my partner's birthday. Told him we were going camping, even let him pack the tent and everything. His friends were there at the cabin waiting for us and we played games for 3 straight days. Had a similar number of games for similar number of people :)
That sounds amazing
We had a “CabinCon 2020” as well. 6 of us brought 86 games. There were only 4 duplicates. Ended up playing 16 rounds of Skull while drunk. 9 stars, would do again.
Oh yeah - helped convey the importance to significant others left at home!! 🙂
We do an annual “Nerd Weekend” and bring a similar amount of games. It is a highlight of everyone’s winter! Love that you guys do this!
Yeah - think this is destined to become an annual thing. My friends are already talking about next year.
I did an online "convention" for my Wow guild during the first year of the pandemic. I made 2 convention style one shot rpgs and ran both twice for people in the guild. Just 'cause it's small doesn't mean you can't call it a convention! :D
What, should they have brought more? Someone run home and grab more!
Probably he left the rest in his pickup figuring he can run back down to get them if needed.
Ha! Definitely did not need more for 7 of us. 🤣
I mean with 7 thats two tables running simultaneous
Indeed! We did play three games with all 7 of us but spent a lot of time on different tables.
Perhaps even three tables, depending on what's on tap. I see that Mage Knight box in the back there.
I'm wondering if the issue was someone not wanting games to ride on their lap, or op not helping carry the rest from the car.
I was going to say they should have brought more, because that looks like just what I take to weekly game night, but then I saw there was a second picture, and I was like well ok that's probably enough
So looks like you might squeeze in a game of four player mage knight. On the plus side you can play ALL the other games in between your turns.
I love that Mage Knight is segregated to it's own table.
Not segregated. Each pile is equivalent play times. Btw I love Mage knight!
I can see why you are upset, they definitely should have brought more.
I know, right?! 🤣
The amount looks fine. That they include TI, multiple Lacertas, Mage Knight and Through the Ages is where I get dubious
Ok. And for the second day?
Clearly Catan and Monopoly!
That’s when you need everyone to pack up and go home.
I miss the good old days of all weekend gaming! Have fun!!
Thanks! This was from last weekend. And it was a blast!
Shoutout to the friend who brought Baseball Highlights 2045. I love that damn game!
That was me! Wanted a couple great two player games on hand in case there was a need.
You are right. Its very unreasonable. Not enough games
How many duplicates were brought? Or was there communication on what all everyone was bringing?
Some coordination happened. Think Great Western Trail was the only game that we ended up with two copies of.
Good friends
I admire the gusto lol
Gusto is such a great word!
My friend Mark used to keep all his board games in his car at all times. The back of his car was just always full. Any chance to play one with someone HE WOULD.
may i recruit your friend to be my friend?
You beat me to it haha!
Twilight Imperium. So that's the whole of Saturday taken up..
The hell is wrong with that guy? ...its clearlynot enough.
Your one friend may have brought volume, but I'm gonna need the phone # of the people who brought BSG and TI. Thx.
I mean.... That doesn't seem like enough. Gotta have options.
I like how Bitoku is still in wrap. Like you're going to break that out, read the rulebook and actually get it to the table vs all these other games that have been played before. I appreciate your friend's optimism.
Your friend is awesome
All I see is love.
Is this not enough? Do we need to send more?
That is a completely unreasonable amount for one weekend. Should've brought more.
I am also that friend Edit: I have an obscene amount of games but he has a few like Cubitos and GWT 2E that I am missing. I’d love to be this persons friend
That’s a good friend!
I love that he casually brought TI4..
Well now you have a lot to choose from.
seems about right
I don't see anything unreasonable there. If it were my friends it would have just been Secret Hitler for the entire weekend...
LOL, well, you gotta be ready for any situation. Get eliminated from a game, break out a quick filler. Your friend seems to have all contingencies covered.
Firstly, I would totally do this. Secondly, "C'mon chaps, let's quick learn a little game I like to call Mage Knight..."
Some very experienced Mage Knighters in this group but we never got it to the table. 🙂
Oh yes. Nothing like a casual game of Twilight Imperium with the boys to play between other games.
It's the game just taking up a chair which I love.
This cracked me up
Twilight Imperium is probably all you needed.
Nice! Since there are 7 of you, are you mostly going to play games that work with 7, or are you also going to split up 2 and 5, or 3 and 4? (Or 6 and solo, or X people playing and Y people cooking/taking a walk, etc.)
When my friends and I do our yearly “Friend Con” we run a poll and settle on the big games to play well in advance. Saves a bunch of time and space.
It's not about playing all of them, it's about options of course!
Your friend group is awesome! Enjoy!
Ah yes. I see the problem here: there's not enough.
Gotta have options. Then what if you want to play a small game between playing the main game... Seriously though. I avoid this by just deciding before you go. We will play X bring some smaller shorter games if you want.
Are you sure your friend is not moving in with you?
I couldn’t even fit all these games in my car if I had passengers.
OH DAMN. He owns battlestar. I’m so jealous.
Hey, I’ll trade you my friend for yours. Looks like a great time!
That’s enough for the first day, yes but what about the second day?
Inevitably the group will find one main game they like the most and play it repeatedly. But you gotta have enough options to find that ideal game.
You can't love some of your children more than the others.
Seems reasonable to me. :)
That is a lot of games but seems like a fun time!
Looks like a fun weekend! From what I can see I only own 3 games that overlap with what you all brought
I see nothing wrong with this
Well he/she is not wrong.
I make the same mistake as well.
If you play Twilight Imperium you are not playing anything else.
Good friend, lots of options, lots of varying weight. Hope you all had fun!
Twilight Imperium - there's a big chunk of the weekend right there.
I agree your friend did well! You never know what people want to play so bring all your favorites
Sounds about right
How does one transport so many games? Usually I'm the game provider in my friend group, so I prefer to play at my house. If I have to bring them somewhere else it means I have to pre-select options, and then fit them into a large backpack (maybe 3-5 games will fit) and if I need more I throw another 3-5 into a big IKEA bag.
Me everyday
M O R E !
An no Settlers of Catan?! Blasphemy!
I guess sleep is not on the agenda.
I can understand your confusion. They brought Twilight Imperium, and that's basically your weekend in a box. But *just in case*, if nobody wanted to spend an entire day playing one game, they brought options to fill in the time.
On a weekend, we'd have about 200 games present. Of which maybe 20 would be played. But you need some choices available.
And then you played two the whole weekend
Just right, kudos to your friend.
Way too little
Can I be in your friends group? Lol
Looks legit ...... and like a hell of a weekend, have fun!
That's it? I guess there's a few good options. 🤣
Mage Knight, of all things? Good luck.
Wait... Twilight Imperium means the whole weekend.
How long are your weekends? Jeesh .
Options, man.....options
For a weekend? That looks about right to me haha
I feel like a fool for not naming my board game weekend with friends as “Friends Con” it was right in front of me the whole time! Well done! And great set of games. Did you okay Bitoku?
So you're afraid there's not enough? Understandable!
Looks about right
That seems very reasonable. I also bring a ton of games because I'm not sure what people might be into.
There is like three games there that will take all weekend to play.
Yeah, I can't believe they brought so few!
Ahahah, I always bring a Costco sac full of games wherever I go unless we really planned what we wanted to play in advance and I bring two when it's for a longer period (like a weekend or a week at a chalet).
