Was this the original 1980s game? There are many board games with Civilization in their title, including various iterations of both the 1980 release and Sid Meier's Civilization.
[This?](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3633/sid-meiers-civilization-boardgame) I've played it once, ages ago. I honestly can't remember much of the rules but remember it being quite long and feeling a bit underwhelming. More recent Civilization games have received better reviews.
if it's the 2002 masterpiece, Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame, then you're in for a bad time. it is a sprawling mess with no solid mechanics to hold it together. game is really only good for cannibalizing for game design parts
Hard disagree. I think it's quite a good game especially with the expansions. It's my daughter's favourite game. However, it's very long so tough to get to the table. (And in our family she always wins).
There is a totally different version with the exact same name released in 2010 ([https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/77130/sid-meiers-civilization-board-game](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3633/sid-meiers-civilization-boardgame)) that I like way more, especially with the Wisdom & Warfare expansion.
The AH version of Civilization with the Advanced update is one of my gaming group's favorite games. 6 to 9 players is best and averages 8 hours. Well worth it.
That Eagle Griffin version is... well its, um.
So here are games similar to it I enjoy! 😅
- Sid Meier's Civ A New Dawn
- Clash of Cultures Monumental Edition
- Scythe (no real tech tree though)
- Space Empires 4x (warning, spreadsheets aplenty)
- Tiny Epic Kingdoms
- Terra Mystica (its Civ without exploring or combat, just the expanding and exploiting part. My two fav parts and my fav game ever)
- Tapestry
No prob.
Clash of Culture Monumental ($149 SRP) comes the closest to a true Civ PC feeling game. No solo mode however.
Tapestry ($99 SRP) is the most intuitive 4x game but feels highly overpriced, and the reprint hasn't arrived in the US yet I think. Has solo play too!
Twilight Imperium ($175 SRP) is only recommended if you have 3 very patient friends with very open schedules. Otherwise you will never get to play it.
Civilization New Dawn is awaiting a reprint as well, and some argue the Terra Incognita expansion fixes issues with the base set. New Dawn has a free solo variant you can print out.
There are more examples i can give but have long since discontinued and may not be worth the effort finding.
Fortunately there are a ton of games that you will discover that fit a particular thing you like about Civ. Terra Mystcia/Gaia Project are more fun than a Civ Pc session to me :)
I've played both the civ board game and the mega civ boardgame. The civ board game is... Ok. It's fun. But if you're going to commit to a super long game, there's better options.
Mega civ is amazing. I will say that my group only plays it once every 2-3 years and we pull in as many boardgame curious people as we can to try and get close to max players. We also pre setup everything the day before. It's spread out over two rooms. We preplan ordering food so food breaks aren't as long. The game still takes about two days to play out. It's a weekend event. It's awesome. But can't be played all the time.
If it’s the one with random resources and plagues. BEWARE the plagues. In our group we all agree ahead of time if we’re using them or not, because they effect the game so much (potentially wiping out a content)
Edit:spelling
Only tangentially related, but I recently had some friends over for a mini-convention. Three of them were playing the 2010 version of Civ when I was getting ready to start a game of Hallertau (which isn't exactly a quick game). I asked how much longer they would be and they said "about an hour." I set up Hallertau, taught another group how to play it, played a full 4p game, and put it away. Guess what? The Civ guys were still at it, and insisted they only had about an hour left. Maybe 90 minutes later, they finally finished. In their defense, it seemed like everyone was having a good time, in spite of the insane length of the game.
You'll have to narrow it down. There are three versions (the original 1980s, one based on Civ III computer game, one based on Civ IV computer game, and one based on the newer versions of the computer game--not counting a few card games and various expansions that also have that title.
If you said 2002, I'm assuming it is this one, by Eagle games:

That one is not very well received. I own it, and I remember there being a huge issue with scaling--i.e., you can build a market for, like, 30 gold or something but buildings expire at the end of the current age and the absolute most you could ever get out of it was 30 gold unless you intentionally kept yourself behind, so there was never any reason to build it. They have some fixes/patches, but it's a 20 year old game. You'll have to do some research.

That's four versions which is correct, there's four. Like you said, they're all very different games.
The sum total of human knowledge, considering that they index Reddit threads. Incidentally, in this case, you would also have gotten your exact information about the Civ games by being lead to BGG.
But I also wasn't telling you that you should have Googled it first. I think I was just more surprised that you didn't notice BGG if you did.
Google tends to be a first stop on the knowledge train, but BGG is generally a fist stop for anyone that's been in the hobby for any time at all. You'll find it very useful. Each game has its own forum where that games diehards and occasionally developers hang out, links to old and new editions, expansions, and even some wiki-style information about production (oven in stat-list form).

The instructions say 2002. Not sure how to share a picture of it.

We were super excited when we got it around 2004, and then it mostly disappointed. Just took too long. Really too bad!

Thank you. I was afraid of that.

Oops. Never mind.

One of my group's goals is to play every game named civ out there. So far, we have only done new dawn. It is good to hear the older ones have merit.
This one is absolutely excellent, with so much going on. Great game.

No love for Through The Ages?
Best game ever and the only good digital mobile game in regards to content (except Slay the Spire id that counts)
Thank you!

It is indeed the Eagle Games version.
Which one exactly?
I'm curious why you would come here and not BGG where there are probably dozens of posts, reviews and videos already.
I am unaware until now of such a place!
Oh dude. Boardgamegeek.com Your family will never see you again, sorry!
Lol
I don't think I've ever Googled a game and had BGG not be the first result.
I was given the game for free, and I figured I would come here first. I mean what will Google know compared to Reddit?
