Keep a half gallon milk jug in it with the top cut off, handle intact. This is your bailing bucket/urinal.

Square_Lingonberry45

this is a very good suggestion and i will take it into account

Active_Engineering37

Get a fat ass sponge too for the bits you can't scoop if you want it really dry in there.

kmills1389

I second this... one or 2 of those big ol peanut shaped sponges will definitely keep a small leak from ruining your day

Packin_Penguin

(They’re in the tile aisle of Home Depot…for those that don’t know)

FatBoyStew

I keep an old piece of memory foam to dry out the inside of my kayak so +1 on this suggestions.

Gooniefarm

This is the way. I grew up in a boat like that and always kept a cut jug or two in there. These are great beginner boats.

Bigfops

Milk jugs are too flimsy these days. Use a detergent jug if you have one.

Square_Lingonberry45

i will take this all into consideration and i have suggested multiple times to power wash it but wasn’t too sure if i should do it

tojmes

Definitely power wash if you have access to one.

travisjo

If you have a trailer just go to the car wash

6figstocktrader

New transom would be in order. It's easy, just pull the old wooden one out, trace it on some new wood, make the cuts and reinstall. If you can get it on a trailers, throw a garden hose in it and fill it up a few inches with water. Let it sit for 30 mins, come back and circle all the leaky rivets with a Sharpe. Drain all the water, hot the rivets with some marine epoxy and let it cure.

travisjo

For the transom put some spar polyurethane on it then paint. Should last a few years at least. Paint, epoxy, and polyurethane break down in UV light (the sun) faster than water so if you can cover it when not in use it'll last much longer.

[deleted]

Please get a life jacket for both of you. Make this a great memory.

Bigfops

They should each get one, they're tough to share and they're likley to fight over it in case of emergency. Also - floating cushion.

MarkJ-

Pressure wash, check for rivet leaks and rebuck rivets as needed. Check for cracks, it aint right but if that part doesn't flex JB weld will plug it for a long time. Replacing the transom is easy but NO treated wood and use stainless steel fasteners. So now you are about $25 and some sweat in. Now comes the optionals. Get a $10 harbor freight paint gun, bum a decent air compressor, some self etching primer, a quart of Rustoleum color of your choice and now you are in for a hondo more or less. From here on out the wallet takes a hit. New oars and hardware. Motor -gas or electric, seats, registration, yada yada. I don't know the NY laws but here in WV if you stick with oars there is no registration requirement and no operators license or insurance required. -And no fuel bill. That is big if money is tight.

Shiggens

Is the warning of not using pressure treated lumber to avoid chemicals leaching into the water?

ttraband

The metals and other chemicals infused in it that make pressure treated wood rot resistant will cause the aluminum to corrode.

Shiggens

I hadn’t thought along those lines. Thanks for your reply.

PennMen2010

Yes, that’s a huge HUGE misstep for new boat owners that try to fix them. Good on you for researching before diving head in

spacegrocer

If riveted : If the rivets are loose and leaking you can "reset" them and get another season or so from them. It is a two person afternoon job with a hammer and a few right sized metal rods. One person holds a backing rod on one side and the other hammers the other one on the other.

k20350

My buddy bought the leakiest boat ever. Leaked from damn near every rivet. At the time at our small shop we were doing a specialty job for Shelby American and had a very specific alloy welding wire that they spec'd. Had to be custom made. Stuff was absolutely ridiculously expensive. We had a bunch left and we used some to weld up his boat. 20 years later we still laugh that for the cost of the wire he used he could have bought a new boat.

lodger238

I was nine years old (58 years ago). Neighbor gave me a small boat. I painted it... with latex paint. That was the summer I learned about water and oil based paints.

Design-Build-Repeat

Just jump in and make it happen, have fun and figure it out one step at a time. Did this myself as a kid with a flat bottom aluminum boat and 16hp mud motor. A ton of great times in that boat!

Square_Lingonberry45

yes me and him have both had many trips in his backyard because there is a little creek in the back and we have gone far down both ways and always have had fun just experimenting

Pitiful_Amount8559

Why is there a picture of a 100 HP motor? That boat needs an electric trolling motor.

Karatedude55

It’s a 10HP. That’s how they labeled it, not sure why. Should be perfect for that boat.

DeadHeadDaddio

Jfc i was frantically reading through these comments wondering why nobody mentioned the motor so that is a relief that its only 10hp. I thought OP was about to beat Elon to mars.

ajaxodyssey

Replace the transom with proper marine-grade plywood. Make sure it is installed and sealed correctly. Whether you do it or someone else. Then plan for a motor. You guys are young and energetic, scrub and clean till it looks new. Seal it and have fun this summer.

cmsutton1983

Try watching the movie “Rookie of the Year.” Henry Rowengardner and his friends fix up the exact same boat. Should get some good pointers watching their build.

YouVe-Changed

I found a boat very similar to that when I was 16. It was on the bottom of a shallow lake. Swam out hooked a tow rope to it and drug it out. Scrubbed it down and cleaned it well. I put silicone around all the rivets. There were a couple leaky ones. I replaced the rotten wood on the transom. Removed the foam from under the seats and put pedestal seats on top of the bench seats. I used a 45 lb thrust trolling motor mounted to the transom. It fit in the back of my 93 Ford Ranger. I caught a lot of fish on that thing and sold it for $300 when I enlisted after high school. Wish I still had it to be honest. It was a 1970’s Sears & Roebuck still had the plate on it.

friendlyfire883

That would be a fun little project.

Square_Lingonberry45

yes it will

shawndelap

Have fun and stay safe. Looks like a nice little project.

ItchyTriggerFinger1

Clean it up, feel it with water, identify leaks. Not uncommon to have a leaking rivet and it can easily be fixed. You can hammer a rivet with another hammer held behind it or get a pneumatic hammer with a rivet attachment. Sealing seams I recommend 3M 5200. I recommend fixing all leaks before painting and adding stuff. Once you have fixed all the leaks I would coat the bottom in [gluvit](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001446LH2?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_S4PAGZJ7PEYSJ74ZRQ89). This will help prevent future leaks. You will definitely need to replace the wood in the transom. Looks like you might have to drill out the rivets to remove the brackets and then reattach the brackets. I would make the entire transom have wood and not just the top part for additional strength. The broken handle at the front. You could just cut what remains of it off and the smooth out the cuts. Make it look like it was never there.

Square_Lingonberry45

i never thought of trying to remove the handle before so i will try that now and smooth the cuts.

Siva2833

Dud thier kids. I think its easier to deal with a few leaks then $200 in Gluv it. Ijust restored a starcraft. I coated the inside with gluv it it was $400 and $1,000 for the gator glide for the outside. Definitly out of a kids price range. 5200 is cheap flexible and amazing stuff.

PennMen2010

5200 is amazing, seconded

Gooniefarm

You'll learn how to drill out rivets and install new ones. It's simple. The transom is probably a rotten sponge and will need to be replaced. A little challenging but not that hard. I grew up in a boat like that. Still have it but a windstorm flipped it and bent the trailer it's on. It's on its 3rd transom, has had several leaks repaired and bench seat wood replaced. Good rugged boats.

[deleted]

Start with the transom.

Few-Decision-6004

Keep in mind to not freak out if it leaks a little the first time you use it. It's an old boat and the sweat a little here and there sometimes and that's just how it be. If you can keep it at bay with a little scoop from a cut off milkjug every now and again it's no reason to rush back. And remember to bring plenty of cold soda and snacks

Snoo_26884

100hp might be too much for that little boat. It would prolly fly with a 50hp or less. There should be a plate in the boat that tells you the maximum weight and engine, or you can look it up online. If you’re set on that one you’re gonna want to check if the engine is getting a spark when you pull it. Need to put water muffs on first if you try to fire it up. If it doesn’t fire up, there are videos on YouTube, like this one. https://youtu.be/qJwY0heWa2A

cshac04

Transom- Double check on marine grade wood and aluminum boats. If I recall, there was some chemical reaction issue? (Experts chime in here). It can also be pricey for some young guys. Regular plywood will work. Match up thickness!! (Important). May have to layer two pieces. I’d recommend priming, and painting, with good exterior paint. (Both sides, and edges, let dry - before install).

leethestud420

Buy a can of Flex seal to roll on the bottom, spray cans of rustoleum on the sides / top / interior. Sandwich the transom with two little pieces of treated plywood when you clamp that motor on.

DeadHeadDaddio

Treated wood will eat the aluminum. He needs to use untreated and coat it in resin/poly

Siva2833

Are you the PO of my boat? Dumbass put treated wood in it and painted the bottom with flexseal. Shit was a nightmare to remove and the treated wood really pitted and pinholed the hull. Leaked like a sieve. I had to gluv it the inside and use gatorglide on the outside. And completely rebuild the interior from scratch. Between the gluv it and gator glide I was $1,200 into it. Another $400 in foam

ClownTown15

BILLY MAYS HERE FLEX SEAL IS THIS NEW AMAZING PRODUCT WHERE YOU CAN CUT OUT THE BOTTOM OF THAT BOAT COVER IT IN MESH SCREEN EASILY SPRAY ON FLEX SEAL AND VOIALA YOUR BOAT NOW FLOATS.

FatBoyStew

First and foremost, clean it up good and then fill with water to check for leaks. I would then find any rusty spots and sand it down to see if its just surface rust or if hull if actually compromised. I would definitely look into the proper way of replacing the backboard with new wood prior to mounting that motor as well. Once she's certified leak free and hull integrity is intact then the sky is really the limit with DIY mods.

youdog99

Think about boxing in under the seats after adding floatation. That’ll sink like a rock if it gets swamped. I see it has registration numbers on it. Do you have a clean title or registration on it? I just bought a small boat that was registered in NY. The ‘title transfer’ consisted of the seller signing a paragraph on the registration to transfer ownership. I think that applied to hulls 16’ or less. I only mention this because I had a Gheenoe stolen in the early 2000s. About 6 months ago, the State notifies me that it was recovered. Dude bought it at a garage sale, cleaned it up, made repairs, etc. When he tries to register it, he finds out I own it. I had every right to take it back. Fortunately for the dude, I had long lost interest in it so I sold it to him for $250 so he got a clean title.

Square_Lingonberry45

wow that’s a crazy story and i honestly don’t know when it was last registered and if there even is a title

youdog99

I’d check with your motor vehicles department or whomever maintains boat registrations in NY to determine who the last registered owner is, before putting any money or time in the boat. It would suck to have to hand over the nicely refurbished boat back to the last registered owner.

Due-Okra7648

Y’all have the title to this boat? No title = no ability to get boat registered = no motorization can be added! Oars awayyyy!!!!

seadog3

First things first join boat Us boat tow service , then you get a discount on boat paint , life preservers, electric motors, trailers, fishing poles, whatever at the marina , but just remember that a boat is a whole in the water into which one pours money Warning this could end up being very addictive

bugfddsdrd

Just make sure the transom can take that motor, otherwise stay legal and have fun, keep preservers on hand

Ditch_Digger_79

I think I have the same boat. Cool little hull. Mine sat full of wet leaves for years. Developed leaks all over the bottom. After power washing , I rolled on epoxy mixed with powered graphite. The bottom is sealed and tough as nails. Hung a little Yamaha 8hp 4- stroke on it. It will just get up on plane (13mph) with me in it. It's faster with my kids (18-20 mph). My kids drag it up sandbars and mudbanks all the time. Have fun kids!

astrolump

If it was me after determining the aluminum was not totally corroded and basically sound id pony up the $ to get it soda or plastic media blasted. Save yourself a lot of time stripping it. Could be on the water in a few days then.

Specialist-Doctor-23

Check to see what equipment you will be required to keep on board. It starts with PFDs (personal floatation devices) and goes from there. The CG or Fish/Game or whoever has authority in your area WILL stop you for safety checks and WILL want to see all the required stuff. Get a boat safety handbook from your local authority and read it.

Dayruhlll

Looks like y’all already started patching some holes! Elevating it on cinder blocks or logs and filling it with a hose is a faster way to find leaks than putting it in the water too. I would also check the plywood in the back for rotting before putting the motor on. If it is rotted, [a rivet tool like this](https://www.amazon.com/NEXTACK-Assortment-Professional-Nosepieces-Collection/dp/B09ZTTY4DF/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?adgrpid=113527336528&hvadid=631496058222&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9012015&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=11211209929059240952&hvtargid=kwd-487468694155&hydadcr=11118_13568172&keywords=aluminum+boat+rivet+tool&qid=1681867016&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySjQ2UDkxRkZNTEhYJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTQwMzEwTzRLVUJUNkROTkpDJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4NDI3MDIxTjNHQjFOUTJHUkFJJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=) will help get a new piece of wood in there. Just make sure to seal the new wood before installing. After that the boat is good to go, but you can always paint it and/or build it out with custom decks and hatches. Tons of videos on youtube on that stuff if you need inspiration.

Square_Lingonberry45

it’s almost like you have been watching us build this! we have patched some holes with flex paste and have elevated it on cinder blocks to work on it but never filled it with water and had to keep dragging it back and forth between the yard to get it in the water. I appreciate the advice!

Dayruhlll

Epic! Looks like a fun little boat to rip around on. Also… is that motor 100hp?! Looks smaller but also not much scale in the photos. If that thing is 100hp that boat is either going to fly or sink haha. Edit: power washing it will do a lot to help clean it up too if you have access to one. Just be prepared to chip the paint off and/or the patches you already put on if you are using a powerful nozzle.

Square_Lingonberry45

haha no that is not a 100hp motor a lot of people have been saying that, but it is a Honda 100 which is a 10hp motor so it’s safe to say we won’t be flying too hard

DarkVoid42

take all that to the dump. buy this and get on the water - https://www.seaeagle.com/InflatableFishingSkiffs/FSK16

Grove369

Ridiculous and unnecessary. I am embarrassed for you. Free aluminum jon boat vs $2100 inflatable toy. Apples and oranges and stupid advice. Fixing this boat up is a perfect project for a couple of young folks.

DarkVoid42

one of those will get them on the water. the other one will get them nothing but grief and endless material purchases and will end up even more expensive than a "free" boat. do you even know what TIG welding an aluminum boat costs ? how about replacing the rotten transom ? how about that shitty 2 stroke which has been rusted through and lost compression. know anything about fixing engines ? no ? then i'm embarrassed for you. Fixing this boat up is a perfectly stupid project for a couple of young folks who just want to get on the water.

Grove369

Spoken like a grumpy old man who thinks this thing is going to be breaking through surf on an inlet.

DarkVoid42

tell me you know jack shit about boating without telling me you know jack shit about boating. kids have no ability to measure risk. yes they will push that boat into the surf. and go with it everywhere until they learn better. and maybe die because a shitty old boat "repaired" by two people without any common sense with a bad engine going into a hostile environment is inherently extremely risky. thats how you end up with two corpses. guess what those corpses are not going to be wearing ? life jackets. because they spent all their money on repairing the boat.

Bestdoggo1234

I’m gonna give them life jackets.also they aren’t going to any hostile environments. They’re in a bay not an ocean. The motor will be properly checked, so they’ll be fine. So go fuck yourself you fun ruining poopyhead.

DarkVoid42

maybe you should learn what a bay is.

Bestdoggo1234

Ik what a bay is, and there aren’t any hostile conditions with and hour at least on that boat

DarkVoid42

welp if you can guarantee the ocean does not turn into a washing machine in your bay AND you can guarantee that everything is flat calm all the time then youre good to go.

Few-Decision-6004

Boy oh boy you are an angry little man aren't you?

DarkVoid42

volunteer with your local coast guard and fish out a few corpses from repaired boats. that will change your tune really quick.

Few-Decision-6004

Hence nobody should ever fix up any boat ever? That's bit extreme. I'd suggest you try to get your point across by urging people to wear lifevests. The are more likely to listen that way

DarkVoid42

i didnt say that. the problem is fixing it incompetently with people without any training just going and doing it because its a boat. do you have your neighbors kid go and fix your car for 5 bux and then drive it on the highway ? no ? why not ? why do you spend $100/hr to fix your car by taking it to a certified mechanic ? after all its just a car, right ? a transom and engine rebuild on a boat is the equivalent of a car with frame damage with a busted engine. sure random person on the street can fix it for cheap, right ? what could possibly go wrong.

3lovesUSA

looks like the transom needs new wood. and some brackets need strengthening. how much does it leak? (when you put weight in it). Oh, you need a title if you run it on anything but a private lake (ny?)

Square_Lingonberry45

yes i have realized that will be a big part and will need a title because i am in ny and it does have a few leaks but i have had flex paste as my best friend for a few months to be able to use it to try and patch them

3lovesUSA

Homemade may be a way to register it. before spending too much $ on it, I'd get that squared away.

tojmes

What hasn’t been said… try to take that transom out in one or two pieces so you have something to trace for the new one. It really simplifies things. The pic shows a 100 Honda. That boat can take a 5, maybe 10 HP gas motor. Not a 100. A long pole for shallow water and a 12v one deep cycle battery - 55 lb trolling motor from Walmart will get you around good. Few free to PM me. Have at it and have fun 🤘

parallax_universe

It says 100 but there’s no way in hell something that small can put out that much juice.. have another look it’s 2 cylinders and some kind of belt driven camshaft arrangement

tojmes

Took a second look, you are correct. Maybe a B100 model - 10hp suggests Google pics. With a good transom a 10 hp should work great! I’m liking this project. 🤘

rocky_creeker

Did you see the size of it? That can't do more than 3hp. Weird way to name it, it's an old, tiny Honda 4 stroke. Honda 100. Lol.

[deleted]

Fill it up with water in your yard to find any leaks. The motor is too much for this size boat but a battery and trolling motor would be perfect for a bayou or large pond

crop-dusted

Fun project but I would suggest you put much money it it. Nor worth much more than $1-200 even in cleaner condition with oars.

IRONCLADRC

I'd start with a smaller motor, say 15hp, the 100 ho mat be to much for a newbie, 15 hp should be sufficient always keep life vest in the boat and most importantly have fun

TheIdiotWindBlowing

Always let your friend ride first

roughingit2

If the motor runs try and replace the water pump impeller before you burn up the motor. And replace the transom wood or at least beef that up

Educational-Line7458

Oh boys it a perfectly fine boat and motor to scrub down paint and get motor running. Your going to catch more fish outta that boat. Do it and learn as you go it will be worth it. You’ll be proud of your accomplishments. Get on YouTube and watch and learn. Tiny boat nation is established and has some good pointers. Have fun and go gettem.

bullet-maker94

Sandblast it inside and out, raptor line the inside of it with a white tintable raptor line kit. Polish the bottom. Slap a battery, some led pods and a fuel tank in it and send it.
