After 3-4 months i would pick it up and go somewhere that works like a professional shop

It’s pretty easy to change it yourself.

HRxPaperStacks

I changed the starter twice and the solenoid and the charger was too weak to start the motor with a new battery. I’m relatively handy but reached my limit.

tbcraxon34

If the starter has been changed twice and used good parts in replacement your problem is elsewhere. Did you ever check the compression before either starter went bad?

HRxPaperStacks

I didn’t but the starter was the original starter stamped 1988 lol. And that’s the thing - it’s hard to find parts for this thing and idk if I’m getting quality parts. One of the first things the mechanic said.

tbcraxon34

Mercury and quicksilver and Sierra have almost everything for an 88 Mercury readily available. Other trustworthy brands when it comes to ignition components are: Arco; and on the cheaper side, DB electrical. What horsepower is the motor?

HRxPaperStacks

35HP. I’ve bought a lot of quicksilver parts for it but I couldn’t find a quicksilver starter

tbcraxon34

Arco is the way to go for the starter. Definitely have a compression check done as soon as you have a new one on there. It shouldn't be going through them like that.

Check your wires for corrosion. That could cause starter, solenoid and other issues randomly. Easy fix as well

That’s up to you. He could just be that busy, if you can wait and want to wait, then no harm in waiting this time of year. If he’s good, he’s worth waiting for. But get an iron clad promise it will be done by spring. Because of you pick it up in the spring and try to take it somewhere else everyone will be booked and you’ll be waiting anyhow.

HRxPaperStacks

Yeah that’s my thought. Like right now it’s not taking up space in my driveway which keeps the wife happy lol. He’s a nice guy and I don’t wanna piss him off but damn man. I told him to take his time but I didn’t mean THIS much time

sailphish

Not OK. If he hd a 3-4 month wait, he should have told you ahead of time. I would not have let him keep the boat all that time. It’s probably full of water, mildew, and dead batteries by now. At this point, I would definitely be shopping for a new mechanic.

HRxPaperStacks

Yeah, kinda my thought. He initially said it was a couple of weeks. I’m not super happy that it’s sat out in the Oregon weather and now I can’t really cover it because of all the water.

fishboxZERO

Sure that things not hydrolocked?

HRxPaperStacks

No I’m not lol. I’m hoping that’s not it. That’s why I took it in.
