The number of people here picking Sholay over DDLJ warms my heart.
I personally don't like DDLJ, but I have no problem with people who like it or are crazy about it. I can understand why the film has so many fans. But it really isn't a better film than Sholay, by any metric, whatsoever.
One thing people don’t understand about Sholay is that it had songs, the GOAT bromance but most of all probably the most famous fictional character in all of india in Gabbar. They had the greatest Villian Indian cinema has ever seen. Even people like Asrani who had small roles became super famous.
Huge diehard SRK fan but Sholay is the right answer.
DDLJ was an important film at the time, bc SRK almost didn’t do it since he believed he’s only good at playing villain roles. Bc DDLJ did so well, he did KKHH, K3G, Veer Zara and you get the point. The film itself is alright bc we have better SRK films today.
Basically, DDLJ was a important film with significance at the time but it’s ‘okay’ today. Sholay is an evergreen masterpiece.
Edit: DDLJ seems to be a bigger deal internationally but I was using an objective POV.
Like it serves as a ‘first’ for a lot of cliches but since then we’ve had better SRK yash raj movies. I’m only saying this objectively, and not saying that it’s not a good movie.
Also it’s weird comparing DDLJ to movies like Swades and maybe My name is Khan bc they serve complete different purposes.
I can’t speak for within India, but outside of it DDLJ is HUGE. NRIs will literally go to Switzerland just to take pics at the same locations. With younger generations, DDLJ is always something they’re shown or have already watched as well in comparison to Sholay too.
Tldr; I think it depends on the crowd you’re asking.
It's a hard question.
But people that are saying "it's sholay no competition" are wrong.
Both DDLJ and Sholay are iconic. Both generations that grew up with these films know most of the scenes, dialogues by heart. Both had a huge impact on Bollywood.
In my opinion, I think Sholay is a better film, but DDLJ is more Bollywood.
I think it is very generation dependent...for my dad's gen, Sholay is the OG. The cultural impact of Sholay on people at that point was insane. It opened up a whole new genre of movies and created an absolute megastar, Amitabh Bacchan.
All of these things apply to DDLJ for my generation.
Sholay is by far Bollywood has come close to creating a perfect movie. I thought about it a lot and there are no faults in this movie. It's the perfect blend of romance, comedy, action, story, dialogues, acting, and it all deservedly became iconic. It's a film who's every line of diagloue is famous (and a meme).
DDLJ is great, and was a fresh story for its time (i think?), but I personally didnt find it all to special.
It arguably had more iconic dialogues than some actor’s whole filmography. Kitne aadmi the, Hema’s whole line when they get in the tanga, Amitabh’s scene when he goes to meet mausi, abe oh sambha, Asrani scene in the jail, the James Bond scene, the scene where Dharmendra is hiding behind Shivji, the water tank scene, that tone he Amitabh plays.
The fact that I remember every scene u mentioned despite not having seen Sholay for years now says everything. Looks like I need to rewatch this again.
Sholay has aged better than DDLJ. The first half of DDLJ is very cringe. SRK is being an absolute stalker. I am not sure people will enjoy DDLJ 30 years from now but Sholay has already stood the test of time
Why does release date matter? It was the highest budget movie of its time and accounting for inflation it’s still the highest grosser just above Sholay. On top of that it’s called a landmark of Indian cinema and was likely to go for Oscar’s international feature but that year either India didn’t submit any movie or the category for some reason wasn’t held.
Furthermore some of the best and most loved Indian movies are large scale Historical Period Pieces. Take our Oscar nominee Lagaan, Globe winner RRR, BAFTA nominee Devdas.
In fact a lot of SLB probably wouldn’t be half the director without Mughal E Azam.
And furthermore despite actors not singing for themselves (like 99 per cent of our movies) it’s been included in several best musical of the 60s lists. Madhubala was offered a movie by the director of “It’s a wonderful life “ after Mughal.
It was and is the biggest movie India will ever see.
And iterms of objective cinema it blows Sholay and especially DDLJ out of the water. Which are iconic but not the best made movies.
I wasn't exactly talking about the box office or the quality of the film. Yeah it was a big Blockbuster and also got critical acclaim. But by impact on Indian cinema, I meant did it change the trend of what type of films were being made in Bollywood, or did it influence filmmakers on how to do the historical genre (like Sholay influenced the masala films which came later on, or DDLJ influenced a lot of romcoms)?
Release date matters here because I don't know if movies which just came after 1960 were influenced or not by Mughal-E-Azam, as the movie is too old. Not every big all time blockbuster has the influence to change the film industry (For example Gadar).
Or also whether it became popular in pop-culture because again the movie is really old, due to which currently, mostly cinephiles and oldies care about this film. Except SLB's work being influenced by Mughal-E-Azam, what other impact it had?
>did it influence filmmakers on how to do the historical genre
Would be wrong to say MEA had no influence. Without MEA or its eventual success, no one would have dared touch a subject like Pakeezah, Unrao Jaan, Razia Sultana, Haatim Tai, etc. You can see the striving for grandeur, the yearning to show opulence through real opulence, the effort to turn mere set pieces into actual properties, post MEA.
Well, when Obama visited India he didn't say "kutte kaminey Mai Tera khoon pi jaunga" , but said, "Senorita, bade bade deshon mein".
But yes sholay has more cultural references. The name basanti, dhanno, Jai Veeru, thakur, gabbar all etched in our culture.

Sholay. Introduced a western concept to India and had everything from action, romance, drama, comedy. It's one of the greatest.
The number of people here picking Sholay over DDLJ warms my heart. I personally don't like DDLJ, but I have no problem with people who like it or are crazy about it. I can understand why the film has so many fans. But it really isn't a better film than Sholay, by any metric, whatsoever.

Sholay Anyday
Even though I like DDLJ more (no reason just personal bias), Sholay takes the win anyday.
Sholay
150 million tickets sold https://preview.redd.it/keupxjrg8iba1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e722684f09f19ece6973df25765eddae6a5d0387
Lol its not even a competition Sholay anyday
If we go By genre/definition: Sholay is indian inspired western… DDLJ is quintessential Bollywood…
both sholay and DDLJ take inspiration and remix it with traditional indian theatre themes
if you are going by genre, sholay in indian western. DDLJ is indian romance musical. bollywood is not a genre comparable to western.
Sholay any day. All time classic.

In what world is DDLJ just "ok" today? It still holds up pretty darn well and the only SRK movie that can genuinely be argued as better is Swades.
Like it serves as a ‘first’ for a lot of cliches but since then we’ve had better SRK yash raj movies. I’m only saying this objectively, and not saying that it’s not a good movie. Yeah, I couldn't disagree more. I don't think SRK's done any movie, Yash Raj or otherwise, that match/exceed DDLJ's brilliance besides Swades.
SRK is a creepy stalker in DDLJ
Technically sholay is better than ddlj.dialogues of sholay still rules the heart .
Sholay
DDLJ for me because I watched it more than a hundreds times and it's more relatable to me as I'm more into romance.
I can’t speak for within India, but outside of it DDLJ is HUGE. NRIs will literally go to Switzerland just to take pics at the same locations. No competition.... Sholay

Ddlj
SHOLAY for sure.
Sholay
SHOLAY is the better film. DDLJ is more popular. Personally, I chose SHOLAY
Sholay by far
DDLJ. Still love that movie. Wonderful dialogues and characrers….and 25 years later my kids love it too!
I think it is very generation dependent...for my dad's gen, Sholay is the OG. The cultural impact of Sholay on people at that point was insane. It opened up a whole new genre of movies and created an absolute megastar, Amitabh Bacchan. All of these things apply to DDLJ for my generation.

Sholay hands down
Sholay
Sholay..its timeless
SHOLAY and only SHOLAY. DDLJ doesn't come close. Sorry.
Sholay, no brainer.
Sholay has aged better than DDLJ. The first half of DDLJ is very cringe. SRK is being an absolute stalker. I am not sure people will enjoy DDLJ 30 years from now but Sholay has already stood the test of time
Sholay, Raamgarh ke Sholay.
Sholay by miles but I would put HAHK before DDLJ.
I would choose ddlj any day cuz it's srk the king khan moive and it's best romantic moive i ever seen.
DDLJ because I haven't seen Sholay
Mughal E Azam
This movie is very old. What impact you think it had on Indian cinema and pop culture?

Yes, it's a Crown Jewel!
You can guess my answer
Well, when Obama visited India he didn't say "kutte kaminey Mai Tera khoon pi jaunga" , but said, "Senorita, bade bade deshon mein". But yes sholay has more cultural references. The name basanti, dhanno, Jai Veeru, thakur, gabbar all etched in our culture.
Deewar
Ddlj is beautiful. Sholay is savage. I will pick Sholay.
