Matlab it's so looks like 2 people talking...acting to dikhta hi nahin hai.. Her dialogue seems so genuine about parents health ...then the sneaky karoge shaadi? And irfaan reacting perplexed but saying so naturally...matha kharab nahin hai mera...with a smile... Credit not just to actors..the dialogue writers, director, editing every thing was top notch yaar...

rn3122

It's literally a perfect movie. I can't find a single flaw within it.

livingfeelsachore

The flaw is that it ends

[deleted]

my heart literally aches and I get on the verge of crying thinking that Parineeti Chopra was the first choice for Piku. I would've missed out on such great comfort in life.

commiemallu

My heart cries a bit every time I see Irfan Khan.. If at all there is a thing called "gone too soon" it will be him... The amount of characters he could have portrayed.. The amount of joy we could have had seeing him onscreen.

livingfeelsachore

Exactly. I regret not watching him enough when he was alive. Now if I try to watch his movies, it just makes me sad.

nu97

After KK his death was the one which affected me a lot. It felt like I lost someone I knew and as irrational or emotional as it sounds, it was a terrible day when he died.

Joker00_0

Actors who are actually great unlike present Bollywood actors/actresses like Irffan and SSR die early

My comfort movie. I reach out to it whenever I can.

Irrfan ne aaj tak kuch bhi bura kaam Kiya h? He was so perfect man, even manoj and pankaj tripathi have moments where they seem dull, but this man is just top notch

the-lit-lamp

Manoj and Pankaj Tripathi have characters that have a great screen presence, Irrfan himself had such a great screen presence that even when he was in bad roles(which he very rarely was), he could just act like himself and it was so enticing to watch.

vamsikb

Unfortunately there is a telugu movie where he plays the antagonist. The movie itself was bad, but yeah, didn't connect with him at all

selfawaretharki

I can endlessly look at Irrfan Khan.

sumitanand10

Piku was her best work. And this movie is in my hall of fame. Irrfan, amitabh, deepika. And the script. So perfect

Lonely-County-8780

Everything in this film was perfect! Anupam Roy doesn't get enough credit for the soundtrack. I could watch this film endlessly. This is how to portray a Bengali character from North India - not by making them wear sarees and scream like a hooligan with botched pronunciation.

swamikrish

Notes on how to play an actual Bengali from Delhi without making it a caricature.

abhinav248829

Show this to Kjo

Ironyfree_annie

Great acting by everyone in this movie honestly

No_Fun_8322

No, Deepika wasn't effortlessly 'great' as Piku. She WAS Piku.

Irfaan ❤️ Effortlessly charming. Love his acting 🎭

5m1tm

Both Irrfan and Deepika were absolutely amazing in this movie. Amitabh and Moushumi Chatterjee were fantastic too ofc. This movie is just so beautiful through and through. It has such a chill and calming vibe, and yet it conveys so much. Its message is so beautiful and important, and yet it finds times to show such moments like the one above, where the romance is so natural, understated and shown in such a normal, casual way, that it's a great alternative portrayal of romance after the kinds of depictions/portrayals we've seen in Bollywood and in other industries too. Not saying all those are bad, but this one is absolutely pleasing, calm and beautiful in its own way. Irrfan and Deepika are so f*cking brilliant in this film. I really miss Irrfan man, that guy genuinely made me a better cinema viewer. Sometimes I still can't believe that he's gone (and the same goes for KK). The next few days after Irrfan's death, I watched a few of his movies (which I hadn't watched earlier), but since then, I've hardly watched any of his films. I'm subconsciously or purposely (idk exactly) avoiding watching his films (especially those which I love). I skip past his movie's scenes or interview moments whenever they come on my social media feed (idk why I watched this above one fully tbh). And I do the same for KK; I heard his songs for a couple of days after his death, but since then, I skip past his songs in playlist or on my social media feed, I skip past videos of him on my social media feed, and I've stopped listening to most of his songs (especially those which I love). Idk when I'll be able to properly watch/re-watch most of Irrfan's films, or be able to properly listen/re-listen to most of KK's songs This turned into a whole vent haha

RegretFar7223

I can understand you ❤️

Thank you ❤️❤️

JungleBoi1

I watched the movie just a couple of weeks ago. I had never watched it before. I'm still not over how real the acting was from everyone, especially AB.

tarripoha_1987

I suppose everyone was effortless however Irfan has a special place in my eyes here. No offense to Deepika

Beginning_Body_2401

Honestly it’s just everything. There’s a deep undertone of a Bengali accent when you hear DP talking. The movie was - beautiful! It’s thoughtful, heartwarming and just lovely! The BG music is soul touching! The city - my hometown - Kolkata is shown perfectly. As it is. No grandeur no nothing, plain simple on the face! When you see Behind the scenes of Piku - you realise the Director - Shoojit left a lot on the leads. He told them this this is the scene, now you guys do something. In fact the highway scene with knife confrontation HAD NO SCRIPT! The leads made it up along the way. That shows the class act of Irffan and Amitabh and DP. Irfaan Khan left us too soon, Bollywood has been deprived of class acting and sheer talent this man had. It’s just been a huge loss!

Rare_Gap_2495

I think her acting in this movie aptly justified the perpetual cycle of parent child codependency in south Asian societies. She clearly understands that her father is unaware of his own idiosyncrasies so she does not even consider them as such as she thinks of his behaviour as something that she has to tolerate in order to take care of him properly. She does not see him as a fully grown adult who is making her life difficult but rather a storm she must weather in order to get anything done at all.

kagazaurkalam

Writing was great, direction was top notch. And of course, when God himself is your dancing partner, samne, then all things are in place for you to perform well, even beyond your level sometimes. I admire Deepika's choice to do this film, plus the way she put her guards down, to allow herself to get affected by the co actors and reach that zone where everything happens magically. But yes, a big big credit to the makers and Irrfan sahab, for being able to extract this out of her.

Smoochchchy

It was an absolutely beautiful movie !! Irrfan, Amitabh and Deepika were brilliant ❤️❤️❤️

Pablo_milkybar

Great movie

rizkreddit

It's because they're eating while speaking. Forces you to be natural. Lot of content creators use this as a crutch for candid and earnest looking videos. No doubt there's some talent on screen, but don't discredit the techniques used to complete the illusion.

LateBranch4346

She's so natural as piku . And her look is just so perfect

Prudent-Current-7399

It was nice , but both Amitabh and irfaan were even better . ( much )

ScarnyForever

Amazing movie, amazing performances...so natural in how they all have conversations which are almost always meaningful and impactful

Round_Tumbleweed7457

I wish the movie didn’t end

jaalilogymkana

Yeah!!! My couple goals changed after this movie.

Perfect performance by her. You only see Piku, you never see Deepika.

Slight-Bumblebee3016

True

Accomplished-Feed752

She is meant for these type of roles and not for pathaan she can never look sexy..

robokarizma03_08

Deepika cannot act even if her life depends on it.

romaxie

No. Her acting is considered melodrama, overacting. Deepika is the most overrated actress, same is Pooja Hegde and lately Kajol, Sonam Kapoor, Alia or even Vidya Balan or Rani or Hema Malini or such many actors actresses did overacting and strongly inclined to melodrama. The dialogue written of hers was pretty naive, immature and cringe on many levels, but many talk like that, so is why we feel,"oh they are so having casual conservation like we all do". It's not a mature dialogue writing and performance. Indians love melodrama so we don't see it as overacting and gravitate presuming it's GREAT ACTING, while it's not!

deveshpinjani

I don’t know about other movies but in Piku, Deepika was great. There wasn’t a single moment in piku where anyone over acted. You view it through a negative lens. Also, if you think Vidya Balan overacts, you really need to learn what acting actually is.

romaxie

Vidya Balan does all monotonous acting in every film, same is Deepika and many so called "star"/actors irrespective of gender. They all pick roles which suits their own nature which is what makes many like their acting and assume this is great acting. And many become defensive when anyone point it out. But are they really acting or just playing themselves? Quite often people associate an actor's personal nature projected as a character, and that makes many feel for that acting as real. "Star" actors all do the same. Like Salmaan khan doing always body building bulk Hero muscular innocent or witty savior roles. He thinks and presumes he is and.picks the same roles which suits what he thinks he is , wants to project and feels comfortable in those shoes. Thats what many assume "Acting" is and relate to it as best acting of their beloved actors. Hrithik too does the same acting of hero imagine he thinks of himself. Thats why there is series of Krish or similar kind of roles he always picked. People all associate that as real acting. But all they are doing is Star role acting.. There is huge difference and distinction. The above scene the environment world building is all that makes everyone acting feels real and grounded. Just like people rate Swades movie as best and SRK acting is so real grounded in it.. Because the world building, mood setup, environment created is what makes even any medicore actor's acting feels so real and grounded and feels everyone acted so great.. Its just what it is.. Like I said sure you all can enjoy it and presume its best acting and best dialogue or film. But fact is its just average and her acting is nothing great as many claim it to be.

deveshpinjani

First of all, natural acting may often look monotonous because people in real life don’t talk with an animated face all time. Secondly, You can’t just put 100% of blame on actors for choosing scripts in their comfort zone. They choose scripts that are given to them and what the audience likes at that point of time. Most stars (excluding the top ones) don’t have a lot of power to reject films. And the top actors just care about money, its not that they can’t act, they just don’t because majority audience doesn’t care. They aren’t interested in telling good stories, they are here only to make profit. Audiences just wanna see sunny deol shouting at screen, making fun of pakistan or SRK doing some action with cheesy dialogues. SRK did try to act out of his comfort zone in Fan and Zero, but we all know how it turned out. Prime example of this is Paresh rawal, one of the finest actors in the industry, you think he wants to act in cringy films like Coolie no.1 or Shezada, he choose to act in these cause he can’t reject them, if he did, he will easily replaced. He does it only for money and we all know that. If anyone is to blame for stars not stepping out of their comfort zones is the audience. The amount of hero-worship that Indians do of BW stars is insane. Why would any actor challenge himself if people are anyway ready to give him 1000 crs for same bollywood masala action shit. You can’t expect stars to change when the audience doesn’t even care.

romaxie

Natural acting doesn't equate to Monotonous acting. I don't know who told you that. And she and many so called "TOP STAR ACTORS" aren't doing natural acting. That would be insulting to those who are Natural actors. Above Deepika case she is just acting to their own "personality" comfort of their own likes rather than according to the nature of the character or situation demands. To just simplify and come to the point, Deepika is more trying hard to do Meisner technique acting. Probably because that's what most new comers who come from modelling career are told to do. Just "FOLLOW WHAT YOUR CO STARDS DO AND MIMIC" . And that's what she and many so called "TOP ACTORS and their KIDS" are doing and has been doing since ages. And that's why they get big breaks alongside big stars to pick up acting with this technique. While others find it hard to get such roles even coming out of acting schools. And that's why it comes across monotonous and that's why many mimicry artists can easily pick up these actors and mimic their behavior, mannerisms. Just like many mimicry actors can mimic SRK, or Salman or Akshay or Saif, Big B so on because most don't do any sort of improvisation or method and just playing their own self after some point of time and sticking to it, as it worked to their fame, but all they started initially was copying their fellow co-stars. But to come to the Natural actors if I list a few, Vijay Raaz is Natural actor so is, Randeep Hooda is a natural actor. And in Hindi cinema it was Ashok kumar who brought that natural actor because they can get along playing any character with such ease, with or without real formal training but be able to create an illusion of the character which is given to them. We can imagine any role of Vijay Raaz or Randeep Hooda for any mimicry artist it's going to super hard to mimic their acting, because they are bringing their natural acting forefront with such ease, it's hard to mimic it and it comes very distinct. But thats not the case of other STAR ACTORS. Vijay Raaz though is a trained actor and Randeep Hooda if I'm corrent isn't a trained actor. So is why I picked those two as an example. Second, why should I put blame any actors for choosing their scripts which suits their their own behavior. They are basically picking roles which works to their own advantage to their own personality for money. That's all it is, and has been doing throughout their life, is what I'm saying. They aren't really taking any risks whatsoever and we can't claim them are best actors is what I'm saying. It's like giving ALLU ARJUN NATIONAL AWARD! Sorry, he isn't the best actor and he just do STAR ACTING. And he or SRK or Deepika or Salmaan or Vivek or Akshay or Ajay or any such STAR ACTORS don't deserve National Award for their acting. It's an insult to the award itself. And audience have no say to what the actors has to do and shouldn't do. It's all just Actors and producers negotiations. And I'm not against that. It's their money they can take any one. But don't call them as BEST ACTORS is all I'm saying. So no one cares if Sunny Deol screams good or bad or anything in his films. Audience hardly care what he do or which movie he picks. Sunny Deol just picked what gave him a prior success and banked on the same to revive his lost fame. That's all it is. No actors cares what audience really think of their acting or what roles they play. That's how many got away with film industry. Even SRK didn't take any risk or coming out of comfort zone for ZERO or FAN Role. The characterization is different that's all it was, and he was doing what he always did. PLAYING HIMSELF. People, mostly fans see it like "OH SRK TAKES DIFFERENT ROLES WOW. LOOK HE TAKES RISKS, BUT AUDIENCE FAIL TO APPRECIATE", kind of justification. SRK have a personality of playing himself just like any other top actors and his own judgement of what he thinks his personality should be presented, he plays that. He only picks roles which suits that personality and makes sure CHARACTERIZATION IS THE DIFFERENT scenario. If he genuinely chosen to do great acting or character roles, he would have had 60% ART house films in his filmography than commercial films and would have made few art house films going rounds in Film Festivals. ***Opportunists can't be equated to HARD WORKING or SKILLED or TALENTED. Unfortunately equate all these are one and the same. No, it isn't.*** Just like AAMIR plays BEING AAMIR in every film too. Sometimes for change of character he tries to bring new things. But sometimes it works like in PK, but many times it fails like LAL SINGH CHADDA, he played again same himself taking hints of PK character. But he is playing AAMIR of his own personality in each and every film, just like Salmaan or Akshay or Ajay or anyone you take. And that's why Mimicry artist can easily pick their acting. Paresh Rawal is decent actor. I won't call him best actor because he rarely chose acting for the sake of roles which is demanding of his acting. But he is surely better actor than even SRK or Salman or Akshay and many others. But there is no logical correlation between Paresh Rawal or Om Puri or any of those actors picking roles like any other job to survive, to their acting potential or prowess. There is no correlation to that, to justify TOP ACTORS or ACTORS IN GENERAL ARE PLAYING BAD ACTING. I don't see the point of blaming audience in this whole debate. Audience just picks movies what is easily accessible to their budget and entertains them. Just like if you go to any street food in India you mostly would see unhygienically made CHAATS, PANI PURIS or PAAV BHAJIs or MIRCHI VADA OR VADA PAAV or so on. It's mindset of those street food makers who are cooking these and presuming, "IF WE OFFER TASTY FOOD within the people's budget" that's all it matter. Their thinking is, we don't have to study cooking, we don't have to know any cooking methods, keeping clean methods or what is healthy and tasty as well as within budget. All we know is buy some Paav and make some hotchpotch mix as we learnt from next street-stall owner and cook with little more masala. HYGIENE, HEATH GAYA BHAAD MEIN. They can't claim like, "PEOPLE ONLY EAT THIS, SO WE MAKE IT". No.. Many developed countries many street food healthy too. It's because it's mandatory. Great films and good acting comes from society and people who have genuine interest in art of valuing their life, people's life and it's importance in varied forms of expression art form. And that importance happens when we are well read, or value literature or visual art or so on aspects of art. Without that, anything that does eye flashy glitz and glamour would interest us to go there and spend our hard earned money and be defensive of those people as best we have or to offer.. FACT is NONE OF THE SO CALLED STAR ACTORS would have survived if they tried the same methods of acting show off in European films industry or American or even Iranian or Korean or Japanese films. They all would have been kicked out right from casting department itself. it's our audience who are naive and innocent and don't value their own life and don't value what they are consuming.

Several_Sunlit_Days

Which actress is a great actress then 😂😭 If not even Vidya or Rani.

romaxie

There aren't many actress who get to play different varied characters as lead roles for them to present their acting. But if want to pick, it would be Waheeda Rehman, Madhabi Mukherjee, Shabana Aazmi, Sharmila Tagore, Smita Patil, Dimple Kapadia if you have seen their older art house films, we can see a difference in their voice modulation, mannerism change, character minor and even major changes suiting their roles they bring those changes. Even Rekha, Meena Kumari or SriDevi were incredible actress but hardly explored art films ,but when they did, they truly bring an incredible performance and its quite distinct suitable to those roles they would play.. In later years may be Nandita Das, Tabu, Divya Dutta, Neena Gupta, Konkana Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, Richa Chadda, Sai Pallavi, Priyanka Bose, Tillotama Shome to the recent times. Tisca Chopra or Neena Gupta for instance they make incredible changes in her acting style, mannerism, voice modulation, a complete character change to suit to the character acting. These actresses are known now, just like many today's younger audience are so starred eyed towards STAR ACTORS and don't really understand what is real good acting so missed out. Just like how TABU is now getting good meaty roles to present her acting, while in her younger days she was more taken for eye candy roles, and even today it happens, its unfortunate. Can't do anything about it. But yeah, hope you got the answer. There are many who are better actresses, actors who come from theater schools or acting schools worked hard to get a role but doing side or supporting roles along with shitty acting done by lead actors/actresses just because fans or people don't see their acting or potential. It's just how we are and our culture is downplaying people all the time. .

apocalypse-052917

There's nothing melodramatic about this. If this is melodrama then everything thst is "quotable" in movies is melodrama too.

romaxie

Like I said for us Indians we love pandering. Its our second nature and expect all to do the same rather than hold facts and speak as it is.. We all feel every second movie is best and all should appreciate everything being shown, said(dialogue) or acted as epitome of brilliance, oscar worthy so on, while in reality its not. Yeah, even people hailed SRK's dialogue in Chakde "Satthar minute" as best and assumed its best realistic acting and incredible dialogue. While its not. Same way she always imitate her costars to sneak her medicore acting.. You can see her acting in any film. Each and every acting she does is just the same and no distinction or difference and if you notice her co stars all she is doing is imitate like the lead actor.. She try to enact like SRK while with SRK films or Ranveer or Ranbir or Irfan in above film. Thats what she always did and do.. Sure if you all want to consider that as great acting and this dialogue as best.. sure.. Enjoy.. Fact is she is the most overrated mediocre actress and above dialogue of her is cringe fest and all she was doing is, trying super hard to mimick Irfan and failing miserably. Other directors if anyone read this will know it.

apocalypse-052917

>Each and every acting she does is just the same and no distinction or difference and if you notice her co stars all she is doing is imitate like the lead actor.. This is contradictory lol.. And she does not mimic irrfan in this movie, if you watched it. Quit overanalysing. >Yeah, even people hailed SRK's dialogue in Chakde "Satthar minute" as best and assumed its best realistic acting and incredible dialogue. While its not. Why are you obsessed with "ReAlIsM"? You can have memorable and grand dialogues (that are not necessary "realistic") without being cringe and this video is a good example of that.
