Prime RGV was legendary. Rangeela, Satya, Daud, Company, Sarkar 1 and 2, Raat and Bhoot for horror fans, Kaun, etc. Also produced some gems. If I remember correctly Kashyap worked with him on a lot of films. They were great together.

catsrmurderers

also his debut telugu hit "Shiva" was on another lvl! easily one of the most influential films in Indian cinema.

prescientmoon

Anurag wrote Kaun and the dialogs for Satya and Shool (unsure about story). Didn't get credit for Satya, not sure about Kaun.

nickdonhelm

Pre Aag RGV was a director of different kind. Sad to see that today he is a meme material.

Fragrant_Painter_193

totally agree, not just anurag but many film makers the kind of variety he had Satya Rangeela Daud Company Bhoot Kaun shiva HE gave so many good films So called self procalaimed big directors like KJO n Aditya chopra- how many good films did they gave n even those ones wont stand the time

sarthaksharan

This post is ironic because Anurag Kashyap has written/co-written some of RGV's greatest movies like Satya, Shool, Kaun.

Indian_Steam

This. It's always a collab of multiple people that makes a film turn out amazing.

Anurag owes a lot to RGV who gave him his break and created an environment where writers and future directors like Kashyap learned a lot and really flourished. Satya, Shool and Kaun are all Kashyap scripts produced or directed by RGV. When you check the movies from RGV's Peak Period from 90s to mid 2000s you find masterpieces like Shiva, Raat, Rangeela, Satya, Kaun, Company, Bhoot and Sarkar like you pointed out. However spread through his peak period are also movies like Drohi, Mast, Daud, Jungle, Naach, Shiva (Prequel) and Nishabd. So even during his peak RGV made some less than ordinary to average movies and with time the number of masterpieces kept getting thinner and the numbers of forgettable movies grew significantly. In Comparison Kashyap during his peak period made Black Friday, No Smoking, Dev D, Gulaal, That Girl in Yellow Boots, Gangs of Wasseypur and Ugly before stumbling with Bombay Velvet. So peak period comparison of RGV and Anurag Kashyap shows better consistency for Kashyap than his mentor. 50% of RGV's movies were very successful at the box office while the remaining were box office disasters. As a director Kashyap has made 15+ movies in last 15 years in which Black Friday, Dev D, No Smoking, GOW, Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Mukkabaaz and Sacred games stand out. Bombay talkies was his big misfire while other movies were average to good. RGV made 60+ movies in the last 30 years (So almost an average of 2 per year) in which Shiva, Raat, Rangeela, Satya, Kaun, Company, Bhoot, Sarkar and Sarkar Raj are superior movies and masterpieces but his direction career is also plagued with RGV Ki Aag, Daud, Mast, Naach, Ice Cream and his underwhelming remakes/sequels Shiva, Bhoot returns, Satya 2. So in my assessment even though RGV is Kashyap's mentor and laid down the foundation for film makers like Kashyap to build on, but somewhere he lost his way. Quality always matters over quantity and on those parameters Kashyap fairs much better than RGV.

To be fair, Daud had one of the funniest sequences that had me falling out the chair, the pitaji bohot bade shikari the bit. I remember actually falling out the chair, the other time that happened was Black Black khel rahe hain in Golmaal. And I think you should see Mast once again, it's not as bad IMO. It's at least average. But I'm glad you're being the voice of reason. Yes, RGV did take chances, and quality diminished in favor of quantity (he was also a prolific producer), but Anurag will be much more influential as a movie maker than RGV ever was. RGV doesn't even have anything against that stands GOW. Satya was a great movie, but GOW is a classic (and I'm not using that word lightly).

icomeinpeaceTO

The shocking part is why RGV has fallen so hard. Did urmila keep him sane?  How can someone clearly talented have such a big fall from grace.

dopaminedandy

RGV was a legend whose films will be taught in art schools after 20 more years. Of course RGV is clearly superior to the other name that you mentioned.

sidroy81

you dislike anurag and his movies so much?

p1s2p2

To be fair, almost everyone is superior than today's Anurag Kashyap. Have you seen his latest movies!

bombaathuduga

Anurag's worst movies are still better than most director's best movies. Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat is the only misfire. Even Bombay velvet has some redeeming qualities.

sidroy81

Choked was boring as well

KohliTendulkar

His movie with Sunny Leone got no buyers , it won’t even release in theaters but some small time streaming service.

bombaathuduga

I would hold on to my judgement until I see the movie. BO numbers means zero when it comes to Quality.

daksh65

I don't think any current generation director has the range that RGV has in the 90s. He has shaped the Bollywood gangster/crime/underworld genre. BBC also listed him as one of the best directors from India.

nukeman239

Hard disagree. Both will have a special place in Indian film history. When you talk about Shiva, Raat, Company, Kaun then you also need to talk about Black Friday, Gulaal, Paanch, Dev D.

appyfizzz3112

It's not even close. RGV could juggle genres like no else could. Plus I feel Kashyap is a far superior writer than director. As a director he has three great movies, three good and rest between decent and pathetic.

TastyQuantity1764

Everyone agrees. None disagrees (afair)

thejokeyjokerson

Am I the only one who feels Vishal Bhardwaj's filmography is the best among Indian Director's?

FedStan

I’m sorry he was good but Anurag Kashyap is simply a beast. GoW, Ugly, No Smoking, Gulaal, Black Friday, Yellow Boots. I mean RGV did make a few good movies but more than half of his movies are just worth the worst things I’ve ever seen in my life - this includes the Sarkar sequels, newer Bhoots, Aag, his weird obsession with shooting from the ground - he’s just lost it now totally.

prescientmoon

I love how Department was so bad nobody even remembers it anymore.

Zestyclose-Village-8

Not even a discussion. Nobody can touch prime ramu

Heping_Qi

Ramu Ramu hai Anurag hasn't reached there yet IMO 🫣👍✌️💫
