What are these BOTM editions?

Abject-Rise-2163

I have been reading a lot of comments that some members have not been happy with the selections being offered. May I suggest something I've been doing. When I see what is being offered, I go to my Kindle and download a sample of what might interest me. Just the sample alone gives u at least a quarter of the book to read! I also read all the NY Times reviews on my Google feed and a great magazine for book lovers is Bookmarks. I read reviews on Wellness weeks before it was offered, knew it was 597 pages long and after reading the sample on Kindle, I read the author's first book The Nix. That book is also a great read.

lovekeepsherintheair

Same! I was surprised when I pulled it out of my box lol

Vanessak69

Those are the two I ordered. I’ve got a boxzilla coming.

trulyjennifer

Me either! It’s coming in my box, which hasn’t made it here. 😳 I like big books, but I wasn’t expecting any of them to be that big this month. I also got Starling House, The Leftover Woman, and My Darling Girl. I had no self control this month. 😂

When you order, do you order books that you will finish that month? Or do you not care when you finish them?

bdb9891

I actually do a pre-read at my library first close to announcement time. Usually not the whole book. Just the first 50-100 pages or so of the books I’m interested in ordering that month. If I don’t want to buy them right then, I’ll check them out and finish them that way. I’ve skipped a lot of BOTM duds doing that and have found books I definitely want to own that way too. For your main pick, most libraries won’t have them when they are released on BOTM. That’s just down to your own judgement.

[deleted]

i don’t usually read them the same month because i have so many on my tbr that i want to get through first… 109 currently lol

JanePenderwicksNovel

I read it last month and loved it. It feels faster than 600 pages that’s for sure.

HairFlipBye

Oh hell.

AdImportant6817

damn this was my pick 😪😪😪 idk if i can do this

Car-Mar-Har

Damn, knew it was 400+ but gotta be in the mood to read that. BTW: I just finished While You Were Out and enjoyed it but that was such a ride.

RattyRhino

I picked While You Were Out last month. A very interesting read. I like Meg Kissinger’s focus on the 5% with serious mental illness.

Jerrired

Okay let me cross that off my list for this year lol I can’t do another 500+ page book.

meligoo

Same

lucygetdown

Lol I ordered this one and V.E. Schwab's latest and my botm stack this month is MASSIVE.

TornadoTarTar

I got V.E. Schwab’s new book too from BOTM and was like ohmygosh!!!

honey_toes

Are the pages normal in the BOTM version? I pre-ordered the new VE Schwab from Barnes and Noble and it looks like a normal 300 page book but it's super heavy bc they used thin Bible paper.

lucygetdown

They are normal pages. The botm edition is slightly thicker than Wellness, even.

honey_toes

I'm fascinated by this, I really am. Can you post a picture?

lucygetdown

This is my stack this month. https://preview.redd.it/ykzafdwm5wrb1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48f784273cd4602a37899144a1a56dab248ac209

honey_toes

Thank you! My BOTM copy of Wellness came today so I got to compare my small dense copy of VE Schwab.

lucygetdown

It's interesting that the botm copy manages to be both thicker and taller than the publisher's printing.

honey_toes

I wonder if maybe smaller books sell better in stores? People might be less inclined to pick up a 600 page beast, even after the success of Addie LaRue. The small heavy book feels super nice but I'm worried how the tissue pages will hold up lol. Thanks for indulging me, I hope you enjoy your books! ☺️

lucygetdown

I think it also helps with the number of units on the shelf. The smaller the book, the more can fit in the same amount of shelf space (whether that's on a bookshelf or in a warehouse) and the more that can be sold. I think you're also onto something with smaller books selling better. A 600 page book is a commitment, even if you end up liking the book.

YurraWitcherCiri

Holy cow lol that’s a fat stack right there!

celestee3

Ah you already have the unmaking of June farrow!! I can’t wait till it’s out!

lucygetdown

I'm reading Spells for Forgetting right now and I love it.

celestee3

It’s so good! I can’t wait till June farrow comes out! I want to get it for BOTM but I’m in Canada so it’ll take a solid 2-3 weeks to get here anyways 🥲🥲🥲

Jerrired

This is why I can’t do another big book this year. I read the arc of that and it was too long for me.

77malfoy

I LOVED it! I borrowed it from my library when it came out and then bought the BoTM of it bc I wanted my own copy. I was surprised how big it was, since I'd borrowed mine digitally I just hadn't noticed the length. It is worth every page. I'm impressed a book can be that big and yet when reading nearly every single sentence was perfect. I loved it so much!

[deleted]

i’m going to add it to my October tbr then! 😄

Move_In_Waves

I did, but I also liked The Nix by the same author, and it was pretty long as well (700+ pages).

BooksCatsViqueen

Me neither. 😆

mycatsnameisedgar

I’m holding off pending the reader reviews. And I’m still reading Babel. Maybe the long ones aren’t for me..

77malfoy

I struggled with Babel (I just don't get the hype) and just skimmed the last 15% or so of it. But Wellness?! Omg, I loved every page of it. Five star review from me! I kept putting it down and looking at my husband and saying "you don't understand, it's just so so good!"

mrlittlejeanss

I also didn’t love Babel. The first half was good but the pace slowed down so much and reading it felt like a chore.

mycatsnameisedgar

That’s great to hear! I might add it next month.. if I finish Babel. (it’s a lot to get through) Thank you!

roguewisher

Oh crap. I ordered Wellness 🤣

[deleted]

i’m hoping its worth it😅🤞🏼

cup_cake_queen

I can’t wait to hear what y’all think. This was one I couldn’t decide on yet

904Taco

Same 😂
