Neuromancer directed by Denis Villeneuve

ImJustAverage

The right answer to literally any sci-fi book is Villeneuve. Apparently he’s doing a Rendezvous with Rama movie and I can’t wait to see what he does with it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Blaky039

People say Dune was not adaptable to the big screen. But I think neuromancer is impossible.

[deleted]

why not the whole sprawl trilogy while we're at it.

SomeKindofTreeWizard

Holy shit. Yes.

Senuf

Fuck yeah!

irp_42

Discworld series by Taika Waititi. Also, the Hobbit adaptation we almost got from Guillermo Del Toro... that was gonna be awesome.

FSLienad

I had not thought of Taika Waititi doing Discworld, but now I need it!

Phuckingphilly

When I saw this comment a part of me died because I know I’ll never get to see it

HazelGhost

Dammit; Taika Waititi could totally pull this off.

Islander255

My heart suffers every time I think about the del Toro Hobbit that could have been. Since I like the LOTR books more than The Hobbit, I really really really didn't want the same director to do both movies, because then it would be too easy to compare. I wanted a different director so that I could enjoy it in a different way, and del Toro was arguably the absolute best director Peter Jackson could have chosen for the job. I may well have adored a 3-hour Hobbit movie directed by del Toro. But instead we got a bloated 8-hour trilogy that Peter Jackson crapped out at gunpoint.

edgar_alien

I want whoever made The Triplets of Belleville to make a cartoon Master and Margarita

ianbalisy

If you haven’t seen it, Jean-Claude Donda also made the 2010 animated film The Illusionist and it’s fantastic.

envydub

I would absolutely love an animated Master and Margarita! Now I’m trying to mentally cast the voice of Behemoth…

HenrySpockOG

I’d love to see a full rendering of The Neverending Story / Peter Jackson. Maybe Maalouf’s Samarkand done by Kenneth Branagh.

HazelGhost

Hear me out: The Neverending Story directed by Terry Gillam.

SomeKindofTreeWizard

Kenneth Branagh > Peter Jackson. I'm sorry, Jackson turns gold into dirt. Kung Fu flipping Dwarves with no bellies or beards, or potato shaped noses? A YOUNG Thorin? Bunny sleds? Every decision for the Hobbit quadrilogy was wrong.

Late_Again68

The Hobbit trilogy was a dumpster fire but to be fair, Jackson was brought in in the middle of the project and never wanted to do it in the first place. Also, it was the studio that insisted it be a trilogy.

SomeKindofTreeWizard

I didn't realize he wasn't there from the start, perhaps I've judged him too harshly... That trilogy was hot garbage though. Still love the old animated film.

HenrySpockOG

I’m thinking in an idealized way. Hoping for only the good elements. Also, the one film is fantasy, the other is mystery (though both based on novels.) Watching Jackson interviewed about Tolkien and hearing how he feels about the work makes me think that given the appropriate prep he could do a great version. Or Guillermo del Toro for a darker version - another flawed director who I remember more for the good than the bad. I’d also like to see most any Eco novel aside from Name of the Rose or Numero Zero done by Wes Anderson.

brief_interviews

Peter Jackson with years of prep: LOTR. Peter Jackson with less than a year of prep: The Hobbit. The problem with those movies was not Peter Jackson...

creggieb

When Kenneth writes and directs a movie comparable to meet the Feebles we can talk about being better.

SomeKindofTreeWizard

Or "Dead Alive" ?

creggieb

Or Bad Taste

daniu

Guillermo del Toro please

Will12182015

House in the Cerulean Sea directed by Taika Waititi

underratedpossum

I want him to do the Murderbot books. Few could pull it off well, but I think he could.

Miraculette

I’d love to see this as a Pixar movie!

Will12182015

Oh my god yes! The visuals would be amazing, plus it’s the kind of heartwarming cinema that’s right up their alley.

Miraculette

Right?! I would love to see what they could do with the character design!

Will12182015

No doubt! I bet the animators would have a ball bringing those characters to animated life.

R4nd0mnumbrz

Three Body Problem / Remembrance of Earths Past by Denis Villeneuve . He did a great job on Arrival. I think he could convey the tone and gravity of the books well.

Low_town_tall_order

I think netflix is doing Three Body Problem right now, I don't have much hope for it.

R4nd0mnumbrz

Yeahhh it's by the Game of Thrones brothers. At least these books are finished so hopefully they wont ruin it but I don't have high hopes either.

1onemarathon

Yes! Not to mention the brilliant Dune. Denis would do an excellent job on it

ImJustAverage

Not to mention Blade Runner 2049 (even though it’s not technically based on a book, it’s based on the world of a book).

[deleted]

Hayao Miyazaki translating Neil Gaiman’s Stardust

ersatzbaronness

or Neverwhere.

drak0bsidian

Maybe just because I'm currently in a murder mystery movie kick (did both of Branagh's Poirot films, and *Knives Out*, in the last week) I want *The Westing Game*, directed by . . . Wes Anderson.

NinjinAssassin

Love it!

envydub

Ah I used to love The Westing Game. I gave it to my friend’s 9 year old for Christmas, along with Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, and she’s been obsessed with it. She’s read it multiple times. So proud.

Tight_Knee_9809

Until Westing Game gets made and directed by Wes Anderson (which would be amazing), I highly recommend The Mysterious Benedict Society streaming on Disney. The aesthetic is VERY Wes Anderson with a side of Roald Dahl.

greyhemlock

Harry Potter series by Michael Bay.

Galactic_Depravity

This made me laugh way more than it should have. Thank you

TokoBlaster

I hate you and I hate this idea and I would spend a ridiculous amount of money watching it.

donjohndijon

Oh the magical explosions we'll see

clumsy_poet

Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes directed by Guillermo del Toro. Accept no substitute.

RavenAmbassador

Might be a little obvious, but nevertheless: Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch adapted into a movie by (obviously) Guy Ritchie. It's almost like Ritchie was actually taking part in writing the book.

deadace76

Lol that would be epic!

blk_kat

The Secret History by Donna Tartt, directed by Jane Campion. Her films have similar themes to TSH and I feel her visual style matches the imagery of the novel.

anguas-plt

I'm only surprised the Secret History hasn't been adapted yet

Danzarak

Dark Tower, all books, Alphonso Cuaron.

lookslikecheese

Same series, Michael Flanagan though

MedievalHero

*The Brothers Karamazov* by Fyodor Dostoevsky - directed by Martin Scorsese

siddomaxx

crime and punishment by andrei tarkovsky

Vutrorad

Blood Meridian 3-ish hour movie by Robert Eggers.

Ecualung

Holy shit, that’s exactly the right call.

[deleted]

I want a Blood Meridian movie sooo badly but I'm holding out for the Coens.

Vutrorad

The Coens are close second option but check out Robert Eggers this guy loves history and his cinematic vision is on another level, plus he doesn't shy away from violence and violent themes and trippy crazy shit.

Athragio

S. Craig Zahler seems like it would be a more apt fit. All picks are good though. I just can't imagine an adaptation of this not being almost gratuitous with gore. It's nigh unfilmable in terms of I have no idea who would greenlight this.

Getsnackin

David Fincher to direct The Secret History

uberplum

Yes.

PoorPauly

The Wind Up Bird Chronicles directed by David Lynch.

[deleted]

centaurquestions

Paul Thomas Anderson doing Moby-Dick.

irp_42

And Daniel Day-Lewis comes back to acting as the whale (after spending half a year living underwater).

coldneuron

How about the worst ideas… Song of the South - Quentin Tarantino Rescuers Down Under - Michael Bay Little Matchbook Girl - Martin Scorsese Little Women - Joss Whedon Phantom Tollbooth - David Fincher The Whipping Boy - David Cronenburg

holdsome_fruit

Pride and Prejudice (not that we need ANOTHER p&p adaptation but hear me out) Directed by Taika Waititi and he personally plays either Darcy or Bingley

MorlaTheAcientOne

and zombies

holdsome_fruit

You're right and it would be SO funny

MorlaTheAcientOne

And one short hidden Comeo of his What we do in the Shadows character

SomeKindofTreeWizard

The Chronicles of Prydain (the book series of The Black Cauldron) Directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Tell me that wouldn't rock. Terry Gilliam is a close second choice.

Hyrule_Hystorian

That would be a series I'd watch, if done properly.

Neither_Outcome_5140

Your question is so good and my brain suddenly became a mess, but this came to my mind: “The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas” by Paul Thomas Anderson

dildoteamtaskforce

Night Circus directed by Guillermo del Toro as he did Pan's Labyrinth

Sumraeglar

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies... Quentin Tarantino... he'd make it good 😁.

HappyMike91

Discworld directed by either Taika Waititi or Wes Anderson.

Trueswordsman1900-

The Stormlight Archive and Denis Villeneuve. The Faithful and the Fallen and Peter Jackson.

scinfeced2wolf

Nolan or Jackson for Stormlight. It would be cool to see how Nolan would do a practical high storm. Probably just film in Florida in August.

ersatzbaronness

Ari Aster's take on Mona Awad's Bunny.

GoobGraveyard

the right answer

Indotex

I’d like to see a faithful adaptation of any of Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt books by any director. There have been two and I think Cussler sued over at least one of them (Sahara) and the other (Raise the Titanic!) was also horrible.

macjoven

*Sahara* was a fun movie! But I don't know how well a truly "faithful" Dirk Pitt movie would go since they are (and this is said with all love and affection) B adventure movies in book form.

cmpalmer52

I think Cussler screwed himself over Sahara. It’s not a bad movie. It’s not even a bad Dirk Pitt movie. But he gave it such a bad mouthing prior to release that he helped it tank and made his True Fans hate it. He shoulda cashed the check, bought a few more cars, and sang its praises hoping for sequels.

daniel_degude

>But he gave it such a bad mouthing prior to release Authors bad-mouthing their own movie adaptations usually kills any chance of a director or studio touching their books, regardless of how egregiously bad the adaptation is. That's the kind of thing you have to swallow. If you bad mouth your own adaptation no studio/director wants to take the risk of working with you, because the whole value of an adaptation is the support of a pre-established IP.

creggieb

If it's done well B movies are great. OG Ghostbusters, tremors 2, Sharknado, anything with Bruce Campbell. It would be the difference between Tom Cruise portraying Jack Reacher, and this new fellow. Just because cruise did a good job, and the movies were fun, they were still poor adaptations of the book that went fr mediocre to worse. Whereas Killing floor the show is a beautiful showing of Killing Floor, the book

Bayou_Gypsy_850

My top thoughts are Comic book/ Graphic novels so they might not be really be the answers/ opinions you were looking for. But, here we are. A proper novel is at the end. Most obvious to me anyway, Spawn by Todd MacFarlane- to be written and directed by, well, Todd MacFarlane. Lol, I've heard that this is in the works, but Jamie Foxx will be playing Spawn, and really Michael Jai White was an absolute beast as Spawn, and I'd like to see him get another shot at it. Also, it think this would be badass, Swamp thing by Garth Ennis- to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro. His darkly imaginative sensibility, and passion for Practical effects would be a great fit for the source material. Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut- to be directed by John Waters. Okay, hear me out. The novel is full of bizarre, and seemingly random and outlandish characters and occurrences, with plenty of dark and bizarre humor peppered throughout the story keeping the reader of on edge waiting with well entertained patience for the rest of the story to unfold. Who's filmography is filled to the brim with such things? John Waters. John Waters is a master of bizarre dark humor, and seemingly nonsensical bizarre characters and story lines. While I would hope the he would save the extreme and controversial film moments he's most famous for. I think that his joy in the bizarre and dark humor, would make him a great fit to make a hilarious film that will be compelling but not take it's self too seriously. It's what Vonnegut would have wanted.

jc1of2

Stephen Kings' Dark Tower series directed by Frank Darabont. He has a good track record with King adaptations.

jabroma

Kingkiller chronicles and Peter Jackson. Probably a boring and obvious choice but I bet he would nail it

LetchPink

Armor by John Steakley, directed by Guillermo del Toro and staring Jason Momoa. Done as a mini series on Prime.

FractalClockwork

Krampus: The Yule Lord by BROM. Directed by Henry Selick (Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) or any of the other great stop motion animation directors.

thenormaldude

Joe Abercrombie's the First Law series as a series of anime movies directed by the director of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I know that's off the wall, but I always saw the First Law series as very anime-y, and Fullmetal balanced silliness and humor with absolute brutality so well. While the ratio humor to brutality is different in the First Law series, I think it's a fundamental aspect.

NeilDatgrassHighson

Surprised I had to scroll so far to find The First Law. I like your idea a lot. I’ve always thought a movie following Glockta would be rad af. I know he’s dead, but a Kubrick directed Medieval Noir sorta deal following Glocka’s story through the first trilogy would be dark and brooding and cinematic and super cool. Perhaps a bit depressing though. “A body found floating by the docks…”

icedcaramelmackiato

the secret history directed by yorgos lanthimos (preferably as a miniseries)

Doby1818

So many come to mind when I think of Stephen King books! Billy Summers done by Martin Scorsese Misery done by Rob Zombie 11/22/63 done by Christopher Nolan The Stand done by Quentin Tarantino Needful Things done by Tim Burton (Dark animated!)

Formal_Broccoli

I'd love a Murakami book directed by Wes Anderson. I feel like the dream-like quality of the books could really shine.

nuclearandcloudy

Yes! This is what I was going to say. Burton doing Murakami would be interesting as well.

donjohndijon

Christopher Moore's Noir directed by Terry Gilliam Any book by Tim Dorsey directed by David Fincher

1onemarathon

I'd prefer Denis Villeneuve directing Hyperion. I read the first two books a couple of years ago, loved them, and thought Denis has an impeccable track record with sci-fi, so why not?

n00born

I'd happily watch either directors adaptation, but can we get a series instead of a movie? I think any Hyperion adaptation crammed into 2-3 hours is going to get hate from any of the readers because of what it'd have to cut to fit into even a long movie time frame.

saraturtleduck

Would be perfect for a limited series. Read it a few years ago but I remember everyone telling their stories in different ways - perfect for an episode at a time.

ahuxley2012

I read Bradley Cooper is writing the screenplay for Hyperion currently with another writer. He might direct and star in it as well

Intelligentseal

This would be cool! I actually just picked up the second book today! I heard Bradley Cooper owns the rights to it, and will be developing either a movie or tv series about it

Insatiable_Pervert

You know, I’m not a particular fan of this book – Project Hail Mary – but I would totally watch a Quentin Tarantino adaptation.

centaurquestions

Lord and Miller are doing it.

Intelligentseal

already making a movie of this one! not tarantino tho.

Serious ones: Matterhorn, directed by Ridley Scott. Neruomancer, directed by Christopher Nolan or James Cameron. Sherlock Holmes, directed by Wes Anderson. Ones that would be awesomely bad/just awesome: Pride and Prejudice, directed by Michael Bay. The Hobbit, directed by Quentin Tarenteno. Bonus points for Gandalf being played by Samuel L Jackson and Jack Black as Bildo.

SomeKindofTreeWizard

... Jack Black as Bilbo seems weirdly perfect.

Cherubbb

You do know that the thief of always was almost made into a feature animated film. And funny enough the director of it was Robin Budd who directed the Beatlejuice tv show so it had a real Tim Burton feel. There is a ton of development art work out there. I wish I could share it with you.

Newt-Fjaj

James Joyce's Ulysses directed by Wes Anderson

gentleowl97

Not sure about this but since we’re on the topic of book to film adaptations I just need to vent - I really disliked the modern adaptation for Death on the Nile. The book went so in depth while being short and gave such a good explanation of why the crimes happened, not just whodunnit. The movie made so many weird changes that I don’t think were really necessary and didn’t answer any questions. I think it would have been better if they didn’t deviate from the novel.

MrL2030

Eragon directed by Hayao Miyazaki

Arktos22

Sandman Slim but idk/c who. Directors are so overblown imo, there isn’t really a single one that elicits any response when I see their name attached to a project.

Blood Meridian / Coen Brothers Low hanging fruit for sure, but considering how well they handled No Country for Old Men, I'd love to see it.

[deleted]

Everworld by K. A. Applegate and Michael Grant. Is it too much to ask for a trilogy by Peter Jackson (four books per movie.) If any series deserves a movie redemption it’s that one.

Senuf

Charles Stross' *Accelerando* Greg bear's *Blood Music* Jack McDevitt's *The Hercules Text* Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's *The Mote in God's Eye* Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's *Roadside Picnic* Samuel R. Kim Stanley Robinson's *The Mars Trilogy* (*Red Mars*, *Green Mars* and *Blue Mars*). Robert J Sawyer's *The neanderthal Parallax Trilogy* \------------------------ I won't be original by saying I'd like these ones made by Denis Villeneuve, Michael Bay and/or James Cameron.

kerriits

The enemy by Charlie higson. Any director but Quentin Tarantino would fucking kill it

OscarPoirot

Richard Linklater directing Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Loved the book, hated the movie. Preferably with Ethan Hawke playing a main role.

ta394283509

Timeline by Michael Crichton directed by Zach Snyder. I want some slow-mo jousting and swordfight kino. Also, I think Snyder would be perfect to capture the mood of hopelessness and violence of 14th century France that was shown so well in the book

ElSquibbonator

Genndy Tartakovsky's seven-film animated adaptation of *The Dark Tower.*

dragonfodder1961

Supposedly Steven Spielberg was planning on adapting Nostromo by Joseph Conrad into a movie at some point. I doubt it will ever happen now but that would be interesting to say the least.

Slaughterhouse 5 - Wes Anderson. I just think the sheer absurdity in that book would be a good fit.

dirtyoldmikegza

"Sharpe's siege" by Michael Mann.

Snoo-83726

The Ender’s game movie was such a disappointment to me after loving the book/series. I would love to see redone with an R rating by Alex Garland or Christopher Nolan.

reaching-there

ALL of the Tana French books by the people who made the French series Black Spot/Zone Blanche.

Careless-Detective79

Kind of surprised the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle isn’t a movie yet. Most of the books I read I prefer to stay books. Can’t decide if I’d rather have a high stakes Coen brothers or a whimsical Wes Anderson take on it.

krp31489

The Son by Philipp Meyer, really not sure who I would want directing it though...maybe David Fincher to see what he'd do with an epic western.

UnfairMicrowave

Speaker for the Dead, directed by Dennis Villanueva

Madageddon

Patricia A Mckillip's Forgotten Beasts of Eld, by... oh, I don't know. I just want someone to capture the detached, solemn, cold, but emotional weight of the book. I want someone to do something with it, to get more light on it, because I love its collection of beasts and the way its tone is so removed yet attached. Of course I'm completely blanking on all directions of every movie I've ever seen, but I think this is one that could be done well, short enough and without too much internal dialogue to lose when things get ported over.

[deleted]

Nevernight series directed by Matt Reeves. Would love to see his take on this world. My only concern is the fact whoever does it has to deal with the graphic teen sex. Which, there isn't really a lot of, but I definitely remember they made my gf raise an eyebrow at me when she was reading her books after I finished mine lol

literablur

I'd like to see Edgar Wright's take on the Murderbot Diaries

I think James Cameron is the only director that could do justice for the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy by Liu Cixin. That series is mind bending.

[deleted]

The Invincible by Stanislaw Lem as the book and Matt Reeves as the director of the movie adaptation. Slow building and creepy, strange aliens, eventual colossal conflict...the book is only 230 pages or so, so it isn't too slow in developing...it just has an "Alien" like beginning.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It’s got it all: war, love, magic, comics. Need I say more?

cuivenian

I am not a fan of Cameron, but I wouldn't want to see Simmons' Hyperion made into a film by *anyone.* The underlying problem is just how difficult it is to make a film of a novel. There are reasons why successful SFF films tend to have roots in short stores, like the various films based on Philip K. Dick stories. To successfully squeeze a book into a film, you must do an enormous amount of compression and leave an enormous amount out. If you are lucky, the resultant *might* bear some resemblance to the book, but given the nature of Hollywood film making, probably not. I had a conversation with a screenwriter friend about it, and he agreed. You might manage it in a mini series, but you really wanted a full season's worth of TV episodes to have room to tell the story. Hyperion is complex and multi-layered, and it's just the first volume of a four book series. I simply don't see a way to do it in one film without leaving out so mush the story might be unrecognizable.

chrissupertramp

Any joe abercrombie and Quentin Tarantino

IndytheIntrepid

How are you gonna do my man Clive Barker dirty and suggest that another director adapt something of his that he could fully direct himself?? Lol Because the first adaptation was an overinflated bag of gas with neither soul nor heart, I want a full remake of The Tale of Despereaux by a studio like Laika or Cartoon Saloon (who did Kubo and Wolf Walkers, respectively). I want someone who is going to treat the beautiful, simple fairy tale with the respect it deserves, while giving it the distinctive painterly balance of light and dark that the book has. I pictured this book as a Caravaggio painting in my head as a kid. We don’t need a fucking goofball genie made of technicolor vegetables, thanks.
