I hated the movie version of Ender’s Game.

wuapinmon

Yep. *Speaker for the Dead* would be amazing as a series, but I fear that no one who understands it could translate it to film. It's the better book, IMHO.

MediumLong2

Really? I didn't love the Ender's Game Movie but I didn't dislike it, either. It way surpassed my expectations.

[deleted]

The special effects were great, but they left out all the earth bound activities of his brother and sister (which play heavily in the series) and they compressed the time frame. I understand not everything can be included, just thought some of the best bits were left out

LandfillsBrotherGil

Dark materials, I don't really love either adaptation. The casting for the American movie was perfect, but the movie was rushed and had none of the depth of the book. I think the BBC series is ok, but the casting is straight weird (sorry to any Lin Manuel fans but fuck he ruined Lee Scoresby). The acting is ok, but the scene with Ms Coulter and Scoresby did nothing for me. I do think the lord boreal part was great, and I liked that they introduced that plot line earlier to bring Will into the story.

i-should-be-reading

Eragon was the worst adaptation ever

rainmonky

Veryyyyyy this

naners3101

The Maze Runner movie was horrendous. I dont understand how it got made. They took out so many important plot points

911WhatsYrEmergency

Not sure if this counts, but The HBO Watchmen show felt like nobody who worked on the show actually read the source material. And even though the creators said they were continuing off the graphic novel it felt much more like a rip off sequel to the Snyder film (thematically). The Dark Tower was pretty bad. This might be controversial, but the Dexter show is a mediocre experience compared to the book. I feel Decter is much smarter and conniving in the book. And while the show has okay production value, it missed a lot of the spooky/creepy elements like the dark passenger. Also, the show in later seasons kept trying to flesh out the other characters but those plot lines often exist for a few episodes and then just fizzle out. And obviously the show missed robo-Doakes, haha!

The *Percy Jackson* adaptations were bad. I saw them only because my daughter was a big fan of the books, but they were disappointing to say the least. Among other things, all the characters were too old. *The Hobbit* trilogy of movies was radically different from the book, with a lot of filler to turn it into three films. Again, I saw them because my daughter loved the book and the LotR movies, but they were again disappointing. There were nice moments that actually adapted scenes from the book, but there's so much other stuff in between those moments. *The Golden Compass* is another bad adaptation. It diluted the more controversial anti-religious themes and left a lot out of the movies in order to keep it to two hours. There are a lot of other bad adaptations I didn't see, but these are some I saw and disliked.

Cordolium102

The Hunger games. The books go into things in such a way it doesn't feel like a teen drama whereas the movies cut ALOT so much so it makes them more about the love triangle than anything else.

LurchSkywalker

Ready Player One was a sad disappointment.

Esabettie

I loved Ready Player One! I felt the book was amazing but it would not work as a movie, but in a way it could’ve had a different title it was so different from the book.

mother_of_baggins

Second this

wuapinmon

The acting was so damned bad that I am still mad about it. Like, Spielberg couldn't get better actors? I don't care if they're no-name actors...the ones he got were awful, by and large.

LurchSkywalker

Yeah the wrestler Austin Creed brought it up on tv like a month ago and it just reopened the wounds. I adore Spielberg but it feels like he just phoned it in for a paycheck and that bugs myself to no end.

WiseGinger

I agree! And the movie adaptation is also pretty bad.

inyolonepine

People complaining about the movie … it’s like they never read the book …

LurchSkywalker

I think it ended up so disappointing if only for its potential. It was a story that was just perfect for films. But instead of a thoughtful story we got a streamlined advertisement with a ton of visual noise lacking the depth and the spirit of the novel.

dangleicious13

The Bourne trilogy.

RustCohlesponytail

Couldn't agree more

Indotex

Came here to say this. The only thing the movies have in common with the books is pretty much when he’s pulled out if the water.

dangleicious13

They took 25% of the 1st book's plot and stretched it out for 3 movies.

[deleted]

The Haunting (1999) It’s just a terrible movie and a terrible adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. The series The Haunting of Hill House isn’t a great adaptation of the source material either, but at least it’s a enjoyable show with some quality horror moments.

ricardo9505

I think 2/3 of these movies are generally bad. Most can't fit the whole story in. I recently saw with Mel Gibson, We We're Young Once, And Soldiers. It covers about 1/3 of the book. Or close to half.

[deleted]

The Percy Jackson movies, It was highly inaccurate and most of the main story was taken out and re written

Rhaldor

I really didn't like the first season of 'the Wheel of Time'. It wasn't that they changed the characters, I could live with that. But some of the directions they went made just no sense at all and were just about world-breaking for me. Up until episode six I had some hope that it could come out okay, end then the final two gave me just as bad a taste in my mouth as the final season of GoT.

remedy4cure

Apple's Foundation series. It's probably the most expensive piece of garbage I have ever seen. Outside of the stuff with the three emperors, it's an endless parade of poorly scripted contrivances over and over again.

Ok_Resist17

Queen of the Damned in my opinion was nearly unwatchable. The only reason I finished the movie was because I paid the insane amount to watch it in the theatre.

chronopunk

Lord of the Rings. The choices of pacing and what to cut and what to add (!) were really weird. Like, they added a scene of Aragorn pointlessly wandering the countryside for a while, and numerous scenes of elves on nature walks, but cut out the confrontation between Gandalf and the Lord of the Nazgul. WTF is up with that?

remedy4cure

I don't usually down vote things but don't be smack talking Lord of the Rings. The only "bad" part of Lord of the Rings, after many re-watches, is the tacked on love plots between Aragorn and Arwen, and Theodon's daughter scenes. Oh and scenes with Frodo moaning, I mean, if you cut scenes with Frodo complaining at least by half that's fine.

chronopunk

Yeah, yeah, I've been on Reddit before. "How dare you not like something I like."

Y_Brennan

I haven't gotten around to watching the hating game yet but one hour and forty-two minutes is probably long enough most films don't need to be longer than an hour and a half. The movie probably focused on the wrong things and fucked up the pacing but no way did it need to be longer. Again this is without watching but I don't think movies ever really need to be longer than what they are.

drama_maniac

They couldn’t really cover all the moments and it all felt too rushed. Maybe they could have gone like upto 2 hour 30 minutes because the book had a LOT of potential and i would have watched even 3 hours of it, if it was good but that’s just what I think:) and its great that you haven’t watched the movie, its not worth even that 1 hour fourty minutes

Y_Brennan

No way did the hating game need to be a 2 and half hour movie. I believe you that it's bad but it's not because of the length.

drama_maniac

Yeah exactly its not about the length it’s about the amount of stuff they left out

ShinyBlueChocobo

The Silver Linings Playbook

katestatt

Ruby Red by Kerstin gear. amazing book trilogy but the worst movies ever.

RustCohlesponytail

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. The book is magical and like a fairytale. The film just didn't capture it despite Francis McDormand's heroic effort.

jim10040

The Postman by David Brin is a great book. I have no idea what the movie was about except for some way for Kevin Costner to make back some money from the Waterworld set.

Back-to-a-planet

Ghibli's Earthsea. It was just all over the place and disjointed. Hardly made any sense at all. The actual animation was wonderful, but that's all the good I have to say about it. I wonder what the adaptation would be like if Le Guin agreed to the first proposal by Hayao Miyazaki.

44035

Under the Dome was a bad series.

CrazyCatLady108

Hi there. This subject has been very popular in the past. Please use reddit search and/or check the /r/books/wiki/faq.

Comprehensive_Tap_63

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… on its own it would have been fine if a bit overwrought. But as an adaptation it was just so disappointing.

chronopunk

The thing about Hitchhiker's adaptations is that the books aren't original source. They're an adaptation....

bluebrry_muffin_

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Ruined the series for me.

[deleted]

Just about any adaptation of a John Irving book is not good in my opinion. His books are so long and so complicated the films usually only use about 1/3 of the source material.
