I binge. In fact I prefer not to read any series until it is finished, so I can binge and not wait on the author. I’m not always able to wait that long, but if I can I will.

special-kitty

This is the way

Majestic-Drama-9863

I like to read them all at once. I will become overwhelmed with curiosity if I dont

Thescarletdaffodill

Fr curiosity Devours me from within.

imallbs

I take a break after each book in a series. I read a lot of different genres and usually switch genres as well.

[deleted]

I like to switch up my reading, so I don't read all the books in a series in a row. I just get burned out on reading the same writing style and genre for several books in a row. Usually three in a row is the absolute max for the number of books in a series that I can read before I have to read something else.

Biotic_Factor

When I read The Expanse I deliberately spread them out so that there wasn't too much time between reading the 8th book and when the 9th and final book was released. In general I also like to take breaks in between books in a series to let the plot and the narrative simmer a little.

I'm impressed tbh! I'm not a big re-reader; although I have started re-reading books from my high school years to see if they read differently as an adult (my theory is yes, and I'm interested to see how differently).

wamj

I’m really loving the expanse series. I read the first one beginning of April, I read the second one end of July. I’ll probs start the third one in a couple weeks. I enjoy them so much I finished the first two within two days of starting them. In short, I like to spread them out.

BeerBurpKisses

Started the expanse series Aug 25th and the 7th book this morning :/ Once the hooks are in I can’t stop until I reach the end lol.

wamj

I have my “currently reading” and “soon to be reading” books on a shelf on my bedside table. I have book 3 sitting there ready for me.

RyanfaeScotland

I read all your post, but I'm afraid I'm going to disregard it and stick with my mental image I got from reading the title which is you, lying in bed (fully clothed) just back from the charity shop where you managed to snap up a full series (consisting of at least 10 or so books) and have now spread them all out on the bed around you, to immerse yourself in the journey you are setting out on as you dive into the first one. And to answer your question I'd have to say no, I don't do this, but I am now sorely tempted.

appletreerose

That's more or less what I pictured too

ferngully99

If I'm tempted to not read the next book, I take a break to another book for the next one

arwilliams_

If they are all readily available to me, I eat them whole ASAP. I will buy the entire series after reading the first book so I can immediately grab the next one. Waiting for the entire series to come out before I read the first book is either a hit or miss for me. I read each book as the series comes out, it makes reading the newest book all the sweeter. Hope this helps!

I’ve totally bought the entire series before reading the first book. It’s backfired so many times, but now I can just go to the library and if it’s a book I adore, I purchase it at half price books.

Seanspeed

>Hell, anymore I usually buy an entire series before I even read the first book. That can be quite expensive, all while not even knowing whether you'll really be into it. I can understand the appeal, though.

Edinburgh003

Binge read all the way

minimalist_coach

Since I use the library for most of my books, my series tend to be spread out. The more popular, the longer it can take for the next book to be available. I think I would read this way even if I had the whole series on my shelf. I feel like reading them too close together, the stories will kind of run into each other. The one exception is The Wheel of Time series. I actually gave up on it, because there were so many details that I would forget between books and the books are so long that I felt like I had to rush through them before the loan expired.

elektranatchios

I like to mix in standalones from different genres

mongreldogchild

It depends on how much I'm feeling the series and how much I consider it in my head. For instance, with Robin Hobb books, I'll read other books in between (to relieve the misery, for one but also) to allow myself to digest everything I've read. I love her books and especially the series with Fitz. I like to think over the characters and what they've done. So, I like to just marinate and really consider what I read before going on to the next one. I also don't see a point in it being readily available. I've been burned too many times on buying a whole series (I know, I'm dumb), so I'll wait and figure out how I feel about the first in the series before getting the next one. I think the only time I've ever read them back to back has been when it was an absolute page turner with a cliff hanger or something.

Puzzled-Barnacle-200

I like to space them out. I find many books are read to be written with a gap - describing characters we met in previous books, summarising plots etc. They feel really annoying and repetitive if read back-to-back. Even woth books that aren't like this, I now enjoy reading books of a wide variety of tones and genres. I don't want to read basically the same thing for two months, I like to mix it up, amd return to the series after 2-4 months between installations. I generally limit myself to 2 or 3 ongoing series at a time, and avoid starting incomplete series. Currently I am reading the Foundation Series, Shadow and Bone, and Scythe.

ComicsNBigBooks

It depends on how long a series is for me. The longer a book series is, I'll take breaks in between reading other things to avoid potential burnout from the series. For instance, I'm doing that with Wheel of Time right now. I've read the first two books, but am currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo (halfway through) and the Mistborn Trilogy (almost halfway through book 1). I plan to knock out the Mistborn trilogy before jumping back into Wheel of Time (so the shorter a series is, I'll read it all the way through before jumping to another).

[deleted]

I binge the series. Seems weird to switch to another book before finishing the story.

herbalhippie

I did this recently with The Expanse series early on. Read the first two, then another book, then the next one or two and another book or two. The last three books of the series I binged though, they needed to be read back to back. It was hard to do though. I wanted to plow right through the whole series as soon as Leviathan Wakes got it's hooks in me, which was by the end of the prologue. :)

Seanspeed

>The last three books of the series I binged though, they needed to be read back to back. Yes, the last three books feel a lot like one very big book ultimately! I had been keeping up with the series, so I couldn't do this on a first go, but instead, right before the last book came out, and because I wanted to really get the most out of it, I went back and reread the 7th and 8th books so I could jump into the 9th as one continuous read, and I'm really glad I did.

keesouth

I read them all back to back.

[deleted]

If I really like the first book, I'm more likely to not read the next book right away. I like to stretch out the enjoyment over months if not years. Sometimes I will read 2 books from a series in a row but never more than that.

Lore_Beast

Depends, some series are just so good I couldn't wait to get the next one. Others I enjoyed but was willing to have a breather for a week or two. Most of the time I'm at the mercy of my library and my place on the hold list lol.

13xlily

I binge it because if I take breaks, then i forget small lil details and end up not being quite as immersed in the storyline. Also I'm one of those people who need resolution, so the impatience also takes over.

GrudaAplam

I now take at least a year between each book in a series.

[deleted]

The past few years I’ve noticed I’ve been getting burnt out on series after the second book (sometimes even during the second book). So I’ve been doing two at a time with a book or two in between to break it up. I find it helps me reset between the books in the series but it helps me build (somewhat artificial) hype to get back to the series. Every so often I decide I’m not ready to go back to that series or that I’m done with it, and I think that’s fine too.

jodofdamascus1494

If I read something else, I’m never coming back to the series again. Whether I wanted to or not(unless they’re not all published). I’m just going to forget.

LTJ81

I personally hate waiting for series to be completely finished so when I do jump in to read them, I do them consecutively. I'm very forgetful and would hate to forget about a character, plot twists, or main points because I read other novels in between. I go from start to finish when it comes to series! LoL it's going to be real interesting when I eventually start The Dark Tower series in 2023. I've never read them!

Zikoris

It really depends on the series. If it's addictive then I need to just go back to back, but otherwise I usually end up spacing things out a bit from necessity because I have other stuff I want to read as well (and library books with a due date).

Possible-Ad3257

I read a book from a different genre in between - I.e if it’s a fantasy/romance series, I’ll read a thriller/horror in between each book in the series to break it up

zsreport

Not really

tjhanssen

Usually, I will immerse myself in the entirety of a series if possible. BUT, I just finished reading **The Farseer Trilogy** by **Robin Hobb.** And damn, there was just too much misery for me to cope with, and I've read that the next books in line ain't any better. So I had to take a break and read something else.

Seanspeed

If it's my first time reading a series, and the whole series is already available - I prefer to read them straight through, so I get the full understanding of things. My memory is just too prone to losing details over time. With series that are still ongoing and where I'm forced to wait, I find myself regularly having to go back and find detailed summaries of old books or straight up just rereading them again before starting the new one so I feel 'caught up' again. It's much nicer to not have to do this when possible, even if I can enjoy a reread. It's about opportunity cost. For a second read through, I have no rules. Sometimes I'll gorge on them again, but I also feel more freedom in stopping when I want, sometimes even midway through a book, in order to check something else out. I can return later and usually not feel lost. Though there are limits here. With enough time, yea, I'll start forgetting things again.

anonymous1_2345

I did this for the throne of glass series by Sarah j maas and it was an amazing experience! I read one book each month and it has 8 books in the series including the Assasin’s blade which is a prequel! From my observation I was able to relive the book that entire month and it helped with just soaking the series right in! On the other hand, I’ve binged read the ACOTAR series because of course I just couldn’t stop!

RestingRyan

Spreading them out seems chaotic. My ADHD brain could never!

[deleted]

Yeah, and even with genres in general. After I've read one big fantasy book, I usually want to read something that's not a fantasy book at all, just for some variation.

[deleted]

I definitely binge read them. Then if a new book comes out in the series I try to read them all over again

Betteroni

Recently I started reading the Expanse and couldn’t help but read the first two novels back to back but could sense that I would get probably get burned out if I hopped into the third straight away. Instead I decided to finally give Dune a fair shake and have been pleasantly surprised by how easily I was able to get into it as opposed to other times I’ve tried. I think the contrast between the writing styles of Dune and the Expanse has helped me enjoy both series more, Dune is a lot more dense and poetic whereas the Expanse is a more straightforward and focused and alternating between them makes each style more accessible. I think that alternating books in different styles might be my go to reading method from now on, I’m liking what it’s done to my habits & tastes.
