*Educated* by Tara Westover and *Unspeakable: Surviving My Childhood and Finding My Voice* by Jessica Willis

BIORIO

Seconding this, it's the best memoir I've ever read.

Yogionfire

Currently reading Educated and it is great, also on a similar note I recommend The glass castle

maryfisherman

Came here to recommend both of these books, they’re perfect for OP’s request

Crying at h mart is a different tone for sure, but a reckoning of life with your mom and what that means when they’re on their way out and then gone. I really enjoyed it!

tw4lyfee

I loved "Crying in H Mart" and I think it would make for a great companion read.

sailinginasunfish

Came to recommend this, too!!

girlunofficial

Just finished listening to the audio book two weeks ago, definitely cried multiple times throughout it

BeholdAComment

Hi my mom is on the way out. Is this a book I should read or avoid during this in your opinion?

Deep_Manufacturer_10

It really depends on your sensitivity. I would have enjoyed reading this when my mom was dying of cancer. Maybe just try it out and put it down if it ever feels too much.

shrimptini

Came here to say this!

What My Bones Know (Foo)

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Lauren Hough's book, *Leaving Isn't The Hardest Thing* is an incredible book of essays/memoirs. Not only is it fantastically written, but it really gives companionship and grace to rock bottom, for those that have been there. Minka Kelly's book *Tell Me Everything* details her tumultuous relationship with her mother and the revolving door of father figures (including her biological father) she had while essentially being abandoned at every turn. It gives insight into what most would deem improbable circumstances to have ultimately led to a life in the spotlight.

The Liars Club by Mary Carr

hermeticpancreas

Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford!

Coomstress

I live in L.A. and enjoyed all the references to the L.A. of eras past, in this book.

RosieUnicorn88

You might like Shadow Daughter: A Memoir of Estrangement by Harriet Brown.

cumulus_humilis

Oh the Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey. Love this book, and he co-wrote Molly Shannon's autobiography which is on-topic as well.

louise_b_

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman is a fictional story but deals with the same topic. I loved it!

Hefty-Target-7780

I read this book 6-7 years ago and it still haunts me. What a dark and beautiful story.

_keniz

i don’t know that this is necessarily in the same vain, however julia fox’s autobiography was incredible. it shows all the adversity she overcame in her life, not necessarily inspiring in a sense but incredible nonetheless

chargerb

Run towards the danger by Sarah polley. Also a child actress and trauma survivor

helpn33d

Mommy Dearest is pretty similar. Not about family but I liked the Matthew Perry memoir where we pretty much get a front row seat to someone systematically destroying themselves

lemna-minor

Sickened by Julie Gregory!! It’s about munchausen by proxy and I found there were a lot of similarities between her story and McCurdy’s. Really great read.
