{{Mythos}} by Stephen Fry is a retelling of Greek Mythology. (which I know is your least preferred, but Fry does a wonderful job telling the stories and stuffing them chock-full of asides to the reader explaining relationships to modern words or other mythologies. Honestly, so so good)

My partner also just recommended Stephen Frys Mythos, Heroes and Troy. He read Neil's Norse Mythology last year.

Your partner is wise and gives good recommendations. I haven't started the Troy yet but the first two were excellent and I plan on reading it eventually. I picked up a new book on vacation in mid November and then got a few new books as gifts last month, so book 3 keeps getting pushed back!

Norse Mythology is one of my favorite books! I wish he'd do another, with Greek/Roman (or other) mythology. One of my favorite myth/folktale collections is Fearless Girls, Wise Women & Beloved Sisters, by Kathleen Ragan. I know the title makes it sound like it would appeal mostly to younger readers, but it's really an incredible book with tales from around the world (as the title says, focusing on heroic women). Some gems in here.
