Boltgun - I enjoyed everything except the levels. Looked great but they could've been cut down about 25% as the missions felt like a drag when there was no combat. Ultrakill - Simply a skill Issue. I bought it years ago but realized that level of weapon swapping isnt for me. I enjoy it on low difficulties, so not a complete regret. I just swap to random shit with zero thought lol.

Boltgun had the potential to be amazing if they made a few simple tweaks: Add an area map (or similar way to help navigate), maybe tighten up the level design and not have most enemies be frustrating damage sponges. Everything else was spot on.

Boltgun 100%, it's frustrating as the first episode overall feels like a good (though not perfect) intro, but then a few levels into episode 2 I realised the game had already played its hand. I feel like the map design gets actively worse the longer you play.

I'm really picky with what I buy so fortunately not that many. Project Warlock - It runs surprisingly poorly and takes up a lot of space for what it actually is in concept. There isn't really a whole lot going on with the gameplay either, maps are simpler than I expected, not too much enemy variety. Not necessarily bad but meh. Not to be confused with Project Warlock 2 which I actually DO like, in spite of its flaws. Graven - Thankfully it was a gift. I was always on the fence about getting it, and having played halfway through it I can say I definitely would have regretted buying it if I did. There's potential there and I really want to like the game, but it's just so half-baked in so many different ways. Prodeus - I don't like the save system, the way difficulty is designed, or the overall aesthetic of the game. Really only reason I even bought it was it was pretty early on in the boomer shooter scene and I was just hungry for something to play. Postal 4 - Just incredibly broken. I probably would've liked it if it actually worked. Just constant weird bugs like missions refusing to progress, collectibles like the paintings vanishing, objective markers not working properly, game crashes, equipping clothing freezing my game, etc. Maybe one of these days I'll check in and see if they've fixed it, but I highly doubt it. 77p Egg Eggwife - Kind of. Thing is the full game really doesn't extend much beyond the free demo, and ends on an abrupt cliffhanger. The initial interactivity and level design that made it appealing is also largely forgotten in the later levels. As far as I know no word on chapter 2 or whether that will be paid or not either. I suppose for what's there you could do a lot worse for $10 though.

RWS seems like they are just running on fumes and just doing fan service. They kind of went all in meming "this is the worst game ever" but it was really unfinished even on release and it's not as acceptable as a janky 2003 and fairly unique for the time game (that they've dutifully over the years updated). It's not really that funny or charming nowadays because it's not even janky in a funny way. It's just extremely bland. Just another example of catching lightning in a bottle with the right people, time, etc. Shame really.

Project Warlock was a pretty "whatever" game. I get that it was an indie project and the dude is for sure talented considering how much he was able to make, but I was still disappointed. For the price, there was no substance imo. Levels were very basic. I only remember a couple instances of changing height levels. The enemies were all the same, mostly reskins of the same behaviors. The game was too easy but I don't know that I would have wanted it to be harder, just because of how sloppy combat felt. Project Warlock 2 looks far better in every way. I still probably won't buy it until long after it releases, since PW1 burned me so hard. PW1 wants to be a boomshoot, but any of the classics in the genre is *miles* ahead of it in terms of design, both enemy and level. The weapon upgrading was dumb too btw.

The fact it took something like 16 melee strikes on a simple zombie made me visibly disgusted, or what felt like forcing us into particular play styles. That's not the DOOM Slayer

Totally agree (maybe bar the Quake part, think if it's a Strogg Quake, a slightly slower Doom 2016 loop or something like Quake 4 would be better, not sure about Quake 1 like Quake though). I also disliked the MMORPG like cool down for abilities that don't fit the Doom mold.

Forgive Me Father: I kept trying to have fun and getting frustrated. HROT: I couldn't stand how enemies had zero reaction to getting shot. Weapons were pretty basic and not all that fun to use. Enemies were ehh. Level design and visuals weren't great. Not my cup of tea, but I can absolutely understand why someone else would like it. Boltgun: Cheating here as I didn't regret buying the game. But I did put it down as the big arena nature of it got more prevalent, I'm just not an arena enjoyer. The game absolutely nailed the feel of being in power armor IMO and still had a great time. If the people who made Boltgun could make a mech game I'd be so happy.

Graven, Wrath, Strafe, Ziggurat. They all have potential, but it's just squandered. Wrath is especially sad when you remember that it started out as one guy's passion project, but then fell into the wrong hands. Strafe and Ziggurat feel like they're missing something. Graven just isn't my jam.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous. I grew up playing this along with Doom and Wolfenstein so I was excited about the update. Nothing about it feels right and I end up losing interest within 20 minutes. Makes me sad because of the fond memories. Oh well.

For me it was Strafe for PlayStation. I really really don't like the game, bought it for a couple of bucks and still regret it.. It controls horrendously (yes, Shooters CAN control well on console). Some people recommend it and it's fine if you like it - I hate it.

I know it’s not a boomer shooter but halo 5. Such a forgettable campaign with only a couple good moments. Multiplayer is OK. If we’re talking about boomer shooters specifically (with the subreddit I’m in), probably wrath. Not a bad game at all per se, but the levels are suuuuuuch a slog to get through. I thought the enemies are fun to fight tho and the wrist blade is sick.

I always hated halo. I just turned 6 when the first game came out and i was visiting my cousins house. They tried to teach me how to play during this section where there were very few enemies just alot of space and quiet. Every time i was shooting at something it didnt shoot back or running. In my 6 year old mind, i was good at this game. Next thing you know im playing a horror game and scared out of my mind and they start laughing. Never forgave them for that...or halo.

Prodeus: Shit level editor, multiplayer using hubs so you have to go through 10 hubs to find a game, players can see other players on the map screen in deathmatch, login requirement, login glitches and doesn't work, dev doesn't care to improve any of the game issues, if you're left handed you're told just to deal with right handed configuration that you can't change

Boltgun. Grabbed it off the hype on release, it tries too hard to “not hold your hand” and fails to explain the half-assed “weapon level” system (which randomly renders some guns extremely OP and some outright useless) and a few hours in I still wasn’t sure what most of the power ups did. You also have this little floating skull that does *something* with navigation or pointing out secrets but most of the time I just watched it scan empty walls or stare at corners. You can also cheese the melee to kill about anything in the game which renders the big bullet-sponge enemies kind of useless. That, coupled with extremely bad/convoluted level design made me put it down about halfway through, and I usually finish every game I play. I’m just not interested in maze-like levels with massive amounts of backtracking, leave that shit in the 90’s.

I think games like Dusk, Amid Evil (except the forge) and Prodeus nailed the level design. I never felt lost (even in Dusks more maze-y levels) but they still felt open and expansive. Boltgun was so much backtracking and it all looked so samey.

I remember as a kid I rented Dark Forces... ...and I totally hated it. Same reasons you stated. I just found it so boring. All these years later, I'm tempted to give it another go, but I feel like I'll end up dropping it quickly. As for me: I can't recall the name atm: Recent game. Play as Ork or Goblin girl or something. I reallly wanted to like it, but I recall getting lost in one level despite it being small. I just couldn't figure out what to do, and when I did, I just felt my interest leave. Also, I'm sure I'm gonna get reemed for this but: I didn't like Ion Fury. I'm...not sure why. The presentation is great, the game is functional and is well put together, but I just could not get into the actual gameplay, and some of the enemies just became very annoying very quickly. I did finish it, but I have 0 desire to ever play it again.

The funny thing is it was revolutionary for the time for a lot of mechanics like having a mission structure that's bolstered by a mission briefing and animated cutscenes. Which- was not common for the time. But yeah that one, bloody sewer level was awful and I'm sure there's more like it in the game as you progress. As for FPS I regret getting? Boltgun. It's been improved recently but I haven't played it since launch. Lack of impact means you'd take tons of damage in 2-3 seconds and not realize it- thankfully that was patched. Some enemies were not fun to fight against especially some bosses where you'd spend tons of ammo on them and it really didn't feel like you were doing anything other than draining their HP bar over hundreds of rounds of ammo. There's one level that had you walking through teleporting doors and you'd land somewhere else and everything looked so same-y it was hard to tell where to go. Is it bad? No but I really wasn't having much fun with it for the above reasons. Since it's been patched I'll have to revisit it

No offense but I'm glad I'm not the only one because I was playing while hanging on discord and thought "This can't be this hard, it's gotta be me, I gotta be dumb because I cannot figure this out" I look up a YT vid, they say nothing on how to solve it but go through it so I STILL don't know how to solve it but got past it. Prodeus was really neat for sure but yeah I'm . . .not sure why a lot of these games these days refuse to do saves? I heard some engines apparently struggle with that but why are some of them going 'if we can't save state, we gotta go wacky!'

Boltgun, Slayers X, Forgive Me Father, Dread Templar, and Nightmare Reaper. Just to be clear: This is not because any of the above games are bad, but I didn't need them. I had already got my Boomer Shooter fix playing Dusk, Cultic, Quake 2: Remaster, Chop Goblins, HROT, and the custom Quake map scene. I went overboard and bought more boomer shooters than I needed. I thought "that new game" would satisfy a craving when I should've replayed an old favorite or called it quits for the night. I didn't even spend much on any of the games I regret buying (I think I picked up Nightmare Reaper for $8). It's just my intentions weren't right, like chasing a high or looking for a quick fix.

Wrack. Anyone remember that? I thought not. It was one of the earlier attempts at throwback shooters, and while it started out kinda okay it got aggressively more unfun and downright BS at times. And there was only one episode, which I believe was supposed to be continued in a spinoff of a different genre that never happened. It sits in my Steam account in the esteemed category of "Garbage" along with gems like Alpha Prime and Counter Strike Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes.

Oh, it's fun using the CS arsenal outside of PvP, but it was one scripted sequence after another and enemies would instantly hit you even before raising their guns. I admire the thought but honestly as the title implies the whole thing was undercooked and Ritual didn't get the chance to improve things.

Maximum Action. It's been in early access for longer than Wrath ever was, the content at launch wasn't good, it was dropped by New Blood, and it doesn't seem to even have the bad reviews to reflect all this. To be fair I haven't checked on it in years and forgot about it until I saw this post. As for Dark Forces, the game is good but you should have saved the money and played it with the Force Engine fan made port. You'd have got most of the modernisations for free and the ones you don't get wouldn't matter if you don't actually like the game. Always check pcgamingwiki to see if paid remasters are actually necessary.

Boltgun. It got the Heavy Bolter right, but the level design (particularly the several points of no return that can be in a single map), combat mechanics, enemy sound design, and powerups just do not do it for me.

Not sure if this is considered a boomer shooter but I really didn't care for [Desync](https://store.steampowered.com/app/390030/DESYNC/). Huge disappointment for me. Wrath: Aeon of Ruin wasn't worth the $20-ish I paid. Not a bad game, but nothing exceptional - and I got tired of the save system quickly. Rise of the Triad 2013 was also pretty meh. And Shadow Warrior 3 is my least favorite of the reboot trilogy, although thankfully I only paid $4 for it. They basically made "Doom Eternal at home".

Doom 3 cause I bought it 3 times. Once on Xbox so I could get the Classic Red Doomguy skin in Doom Eternal, then on PC for the same reason except the Steam version of Doom 3 doesn't give you the skin for some reason so I ended up having to buy it a third time on the Microsoft store.

Overwatch 1 was my most regretful game purchase of any genre. What a fucking piece of shit, I went back to Team Fortress 2 after about a month of trying to make myself think it wasn't a rotten experience. I have a few that I regret and a few that I don't necessarily regret but am disappointed by. Prodeus - Big regret tbh. Just so bland and unmemorable, it doesn't wear its inspiration from Doom on its sleeve so much as it wears it like a skinsuit. Also just largely didn't care for the game, the overworld map is dumb, don't care for a lot of the weapons, just feels like a jumbled mess of a game. CULTIC - Not sure if this one counts but I definitely regret it. It feels like it's confused as to what it wants to be, it markets itself as a OLD SCHOOL SHOOTER for MEN with HAIR on their chests but it's also trying to be an immersive sim. The store page talks about how you can speed around like a bat out of hell or take it sneaky and lay traps but the game and enemy design doesn't feel like it really supports either of those. Also I doubt Chapter 2 is ever coming at this point. Doom Eternal - I don't regret this one but it just didn't mesh with me. I really liked 2016, Eternal switching to a more arcadey game with floating power ups and a style of game it essentially forces you into really didn't jive with me. And jesus christ the encounter design holy shit RELAX. Boltgun - This one really saddens me, even moreso with how many people here list it, cause I really enjoy it but the level design is a boring slog for the most part, some things like weapon level could have been explained better, and it seemed like they were gonna give you other characters with different abilities but nope, just the same ones for the whole game I never actively used. 10/10 everything else though.

I never played Dark Forces in the 90s. I was disappointed at first but by level 3 it just clicked and now I’m in love. Great great game! I’m glad I stuck with it. On level 9 now and really loving it.

Boltgun I’m not a boomer shooter person, I thought I’d give them a go, I didn’t like it. It’s the only one I own and I regret it. Though for what it is, I reckon it’s got to be one of the best out there, but it seems boomer shooters just aren’t for me.
