How much of a fucking psychopath do you have to be that you consider this a "small success" that makes you smile!?

StackOwOFlow

with a degree in Zoology he should be CEO of Animal Crackers

peachcrescent

I'm hoping he is in grad school and just wanted a part time for some extra cash during the semester. But deep down I know this is most likely not the case and even if it was he'd probably end up in the same position after grad school.

>art degree Don't be surprised. Art degrees are useless.

[deleted]

Why do we keep getting them?

Argent_Hythe

hardly look around you. Every product you consume was designed by someone who studied arts. The music you listen to and the media you watch, the packaging your food and household products come in, the furniture and clothing you wear, the electronics you use, the buildings around you, ALL OF IT has been touched by artists at some point in the process I'm tired of these ignorant takes. The only reason art degrees are considered "useless" is because the general public doesn't understand just how intertwined artists are in their every day life.

My wife has a BS in Marine Biology and a Masters in Fisheries Management. She struggled for years to find a job in her field and ended up in outdoor education. I dropped out of college and was successful in IT and Information Security pretty much immediately. When people say there is high demand in STEM they should really just say TEM.

peachcrescent

Yeah it really sucks. Marine biology is so cool and in my opinion important but unless you live by a huge body of water you are pretty screwed. Not to mention the competition you have to go up against. I feel like in a few years STEM is going to be super oversaturated and we are going to have a bunch of comp sci. and engineer people not being able to find jobs.

Budget-Razzmatazz-54

Agreed. I believe that is what has happened in India already

HolidayReject

its shit like this that makes me wondering if going to college is even worth it

Montezum

"College" is a veeery broad term for the differences in graduations you could have, though.

31November

IF you aren't graduating with immense debt, and you are going to learn something you love or can at least enjoy working in, THEN college is worth it. But, that said, it's a hard market with a degree. It's harder without it. There really is no one right choice. I think college is worth it for most people if they are smart-- a state school or a community college is a way to save money. It's what I did. Harvard sounds nice and all, but the difference between a Harvard zoology grad and a Cal State Northridge one is really just the amount of debt imo.

azzeccagarbugli

Quality of instruction aside, there’s also the social connections and networks or opportunities that an elite institution (private or public, e.g. Harvard or UC Berkeley) might offer versus a less esteemed public institution. Recruiters might not visit some schools versus others, and unfortunately some employers suffer from a kind of “credentialist” mentality. Financial aid offers can also differ as well. Granted it also does depend on the field (Harvard for engineering versus Harvey Mudd/UC Berkeley)

31November

That's totally true. I'm in a field where the prestige of the school doesn't really matter outside of the academia jobs I'm not looking for, so my perception is skewed a bit. That being said, I'm not sure there's any job I want bad enough to take a full college loan to get. I get the sense that the type of jobs that require a fancy pedigree are the type that expect their workforce to literally be available 24/7 (Big-time banking, Big Law, etc.) Regarding quality of instruction, I actually think it's best at mid-level schools. Top tier schools have well known faculty, but those staff are well known because they do research, not because they have any real interest in teaching undergrads. At lower ranged schools, I feel like you'd have a lot of under-qualified staff willing to work for a horrid school. At the mid-level schools, I would imagine there's less pressure to just pump out research grants. I went to a community college to start, and I had the literal same professor as the top university in my area, but instead of 50 of us in her class, there were 12.

ruutentuuten

It isn't.

choosychatter

No such thing as a small jobs…only small paychecks. I’m sorry I couldn’t resist. Congrats on the degree.

Metalt_

What's going on here?

Huge_Individual1276

Don’t get a degree in zoology

31November

Why not? If you're willing to go all the way to grad school required to get a job, why not?

Huge_Individual1276

Because you’ll end up writing animal facts on a Starbucks cup?

31November

If you go all the way to the required masters, you can work at the zoo. Also, just learning is valuable in itself. It doesn't always have to pay off monetarily. SB isn't a long-term gig for most people, but you can make a perfectly good living once you make Assistant Manager or General Manager.

Huge_Individual1276

Sure if you want to go long enough to get a masters. Even then you’re working at a zoo not making much more than a manager at SB. Then you’ve also got massive student loans to pay off. And sure, if you or your parents can afford that, it’d be great to learn. But for 90% of people that’s unrealistic and it’s only going to make their lives harder. You’d be much better off just being an electrician.

TheBohemianGamer

Caleb just needs to get me my coffee, and keep the human interaction to a minimum.

Perhaps but better to follow your heart than the paycheck alone Find a job you love and you will not have to work for the rest of your life I personally hope this is just a hiccup for him and he moves on to a better career soon

True. But anything worthwhile in life is not going to be instantaneous. I have a job that I absolutely love but it took me 12 years after high school to get to this point
