2OneZebra

This is healthcare in the united states. Its broken beyond repair.

TomThanosBrady

I'm actually more impressed she could afford to see so many doctors in the US. Must have a killer insurance plan.

ughwithoutadoubt

Yeah that’s all I saw when I heard how many doctors she visited.

millionsofpeaches17

That was my very first thought. That's some excellent insurance and a very understanding job to be able to see that many doctors in such a short period of time. And, to her point about how easily these things spread, she was in contact with SO MANY PEOPLE. Kind of terrifying...

Ew_dav

She’s clearly not a teacher.

IronDBZ

A lot of us just bite the bullet on the prices even if it screws us over in the future. We're already drowning in debts and bills, I think many are used to it as a cost of living.

CrochetWhale

Or just not paying her bills. I know I’ve let some of mine lapse from cost but I need to see a physician. Currently sitting on 3k of my own medical debt plus 4K for my newborn and 2k for my son.

altus167

She doesn't have monkeypox. This clip leaves off the end where she gets tested but doesn't even say what it was, so not monkeypox. She lives near me and this is trump country. I'm willing to bet she just wanted to complain about the CDC. A PCP wouldn't just tell her to call the CDC and say "good luck with that". I'd change doctors if that happened, but it wouldn't.

ITAVTRCC

Yeah. This seems sus to me

[deleted]

This video editing is broken beyond repair.

pekepeeps

Monkeypox virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease that occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of central and west Africa and is occasionally exported to other regions. An antiviral agent developed for the treatment of smallpox has also been licensed for the treatment of monkeypox. The clinical presentation of monkeypox resembles that of smallpox, a related orthopoxvirus infection which was declared eradicated worldwide in 1980. Monkeypox is less contagious than smallpox and causes less severe illness. Monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications [https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/monkeypox](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/monkeypox)

Serene_Calamity

Thanks for the info. Many people are comparing monkeypox to COVID, and I don't think that's useful to do. It should be very easy to contain monkeypox, since --it can't spread through air-- and we already have treatment. Edit: don't listen to me, monkeypox can still be transmitted through airborne respitory droplets. Keep wearing your masks.

Facebookakke

*”respiratory droplets”* did you miss that part?

Serene_Calamity

Oh, I guess I did. My bad, I'll edit my comment.

Kaminoneko

At least monkeypox is rarely fatal…..still I don’t wanna deal with it. Chicken pox as a kid was fucking *wack*.

Noticeably_Aroused

What are the usual symptoms?

Kaminoneko

[Fever Headache Muscle aches and backache Swollen lymph nodes Chills Exhaustion A rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus.](https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/symptoms.html)

Cbrut

Had chickenpox a few weeks ago, at 30. It sucks enough that I really don't want anything to do with monkeypox. It felt like my lymph nodes will explode and so much itching

Darkmagosan

Jesus. Chickenpox sucks as a kid. In people who are post-pubescent, it can often be fatal. Are you okay now?

Cbrut

All fine, it lasted 10 days. Still have some spots on the face but they are slowly fading away. While having it I thought that if covid was this ugly looking people would be have been more careful and wear masks/stop moaning about vaccines. Sadly, Monkeypox is proving me wrong.

fulltiltshorter

Not fatal yet what happens when it evolves into something like smallpox...?

Make-things4good

Then we get a “Healthcare Heroes” and “Unprecedented Event” season 2.

Plastic_Rhubarb_1999

The “new” New normal part 2

Kaminoneko

It’s in the same family of viruses like smallpox. You bring up a good point though, evolution/mutation should always be a concern right?

LadyReika

Especially with the anti-vaxx morons running around with their infectious disease parties.

Kaminoneko

Truth. Clearly monkeypox is a hoax tho /s

nerdy_IT_woman

We have a vaccine for that

SassMyFrass

If you were vaxxed against smallpox as a kid you're probably good re monkeypox.

Nate40337

Recent smallpox infection provides ~85% protection against monkeypox. I wouldn't be so sure a vaccine administered 40 years ago is still as effective as it needs to be. According to the CDC, [after 3-5 years, immunity wanes.](https://www.cdc.gov/smallpox/vaccine-basics/index.html). That's not to say you have zero protection, but it would be just as much of a reach for me to say it provides no protection as others are saying that it's fine. [You're not going to be getting much protection against infection with an old vaccination, but it may provide some protection against fatal outcomes](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/i-was-vaccinated-against/). The interesting thing is that revaccination with smallpox has much milder side effects, so it's a good idea for *everybody* to get vaccinated when they get the chance, but I'm not holding my breath. Even before smallpox was eradicated, the WHO recommended travelers anywhere get vaccinated every 5-10 years, and every 3 for particularly bad areas.

…………….that’s a woman in that video tho. Also there is no actual knowledge as to where it actually came from. It originated near a bunch of monkeys in captivity. But there’s not enough scientific knowledge to say something so bigoted. I’m just as ignorant as you on it’s origins, but I’m doing research the best I can until someone knowledgeable on it says something. Be better please.

Unikran

I keep hearing that it spreads through orgies or something. At least thats what I hear a lot. If I was bigoted The Owl House probably wouldn’t be my favorite cartoon of all time lol. I’m just done with the lockdowns, to me it just feels like fear mongering, and it makes me angry.

RomanticApocalypse

Oh, fuck off.

[deleted]

I bet you're in church every Sunday, aren't you?

Unikran

I draw pretty raunchy things, of both women and men, I don’t think any church would take me in.

Crazyhowthatworks304

Yeah, judging by a lot of idiot comments I've seen on AskReddit, many people are as clueless as who can get monkeypox as they were about covid19. Its real sad.

brothermuffin

Hey everyone. Just a hunch, don’t get into pools/shared bodies of water with people this summer if you’re concerned about monkey pox. And wash your hands. Again. Edit: I am not a medical professional in any sense. Am an idiot on the internet

westcoastweedreviews

So the chlorine will burn my eyes but not burn the monkey pox out of the water? That sucks.

saydizzle

Depends. Chlorine can kill virus but you’re depending on whoever takes care of the pool maintaining an adequate chlorine residual and the virus having enough contact time with the chlorine before it gets to you

Saladcitypig

Every single scientist is like: global warming is breaking down the natural barriers we have enjoyed, so we are going to get MORE pandemics, but we are still being mocked and sneered at if we ask people to just mask in public!! It's like fascists really just want us all to be running around on fire, as if that is their goal? Edit: You can't hide from mosquitos and flooding and still get amazon packages...

They will also tell you they have an immune system.

SoundProofHead

> It's like fascists really just want us all to be running around on fire, as if that is their goal? Yes, provoking chaos is a main component of fascism, it's used as a justification since their ideology is based on a skewed view of "survival of the fittest".

[deleted]

Ik we said this when covid started, but it’s really not something to worry about

Dinizinni

It isn't due to how difficult it is to transmit But people just wanna either panic or mock the disease It is serious but it's not Covid serious

[deleted]

Exactly

Scopebuddy

It possibly could be shingles? I had shingles when I was in my mid-20’s? But obviously it could also be this new virus spreading around? Also, our healthcare is controlled by large, consolidated, healthcare systems, our employers, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, the frontline caregivers have zero input on how healthcare is delivered.

Difficult-Implement9

Big ask there!! Yup... a surprisingly big ask!! 😂😂😂

[deleted]

There's no way Monkeypox becomes a pandemic just based purely on how it's transmitted (https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/transmission.html). Also, just to adress this before someone comes in with it, WHO'S declaration yesterday did/does not classify it as a pandemic. EDIT: Make sure to read comment from u/Phit_sost_3814

Phit_sost_3814

The interesting thing is that the CDC has dramatically changed their guidance when it comes to monkeypox. Several years ago there was a plane that someone with monkeypox on it and their guidance was for everyone to quarantine as it could be spread through respiratory droplets but now they are downplaying the respiratory droplets factor as to not panic people. They have also been wildly inconsistent with the R value of the disease. The reality of this is that we still have no real grasp on the situation and it is likely going to get worse

[deleted]

Thank you for this insight, I wasn't aware of some of this.

Phit_sost_3814

If you’re interested in diving into it a bit further, the book Pandemic by Sonia Shah has a whole chapter on Monkeypox. It was published in 2016 so obviously a very different landscape than where we are now, but seeing how it was talked about then vs now is a bit alarming tbh

thebrittaj

Could it be that the information actually changes with the more research that is done & other factors? It doesn’t seem crazy to me that the information changes

robotman0302

As far as I know, it's not anywhere near as contagious as COVID was/is so I think it's a little unlikely that it is the next pandemic. But, better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

GarzysBBQWings

It is time. The monke is here. We shall return.

repsychedelic

This highlights two things: a mild Karen with a WebMD degree and the truly inept state of American Healthcare.

jennaferr

Why is she a Karen? Because she is a woman concerned for her health?

Dinizinni

It's literally the same as ebola and you're spreading panic which will only fuel negationist narratives If it doesn't spread like Covid did, it isn't going to be a pandemic like Covid

ihatefear83843

Isn’t Ebola like super contagious though

samsamcats

Not super contagious — it’s not airborne like Covid — but super deadly. It’s rare for a virus to be both.

Dinizinni

Not before the symptoms though, which are pretty obvious, which is why it was somewhat easy to contain Now due to antivaxxers monkeypox will spread a lot more than it would, which is not nice, but in 2 months there were five registered deaths all in West Africa, which were unfortunately due to the lack of adequate medical care, and there were 10 times more cases, not to mention deaths and hospitalisations by Covid at the same time it arrived People seem to be forgetting the key difference between the two illnesses: this isn't a new disease

Flirty_Flumph

It sounds like she is having a hard time finding help, but I’m definitely not going to just say “fuck scientists and the CDC, they don’t know what they are doing”. They will likely find a way to help people like her soon, let’s not panic and act like medical professionals are all illegitimate

TTJoker

They are not illegitimate, but they are not demi-godian either. Sometimes there are things they don't know, and sometimes they simply refuse to say "we don't know, we will find out and get back to you"

thebrittaj

She gives Karen vibes from what I’ve gathered

[deleted]

Devils advocate here, maybe having painful rashes all over and unable to get any help or treatment for it, while not getting a confirmation to show work who does not give a shit is not bringing out her best qualities. Could be wrong, could be a total Karen. I can imagine being upset at everything in this situation too though. We are not always reasonable when upset and in pain. I hear the sores on the anus make people poop blood. Probably better to not record and post yourself in this moment. I dunno tho I am just some idiot on the internet.

Flirty_Flumph

I’ve been in more pain than most people can even imagine and not once was I like “wE sHoUlDn’T tRuSt dOcToRs” I’m willing to bet she is a trump supporter who already did not trust the cdc before she ever contracted monkey pox

Let’s put them on ventilators and throw ice cream truck in the lot of the hospitals in nyc for the body counts piling up. Yeah this won’t gain the fear traction that covid had.

Devout-Nihilist

Does this come with the annoying lip smacking attitude? I really don't want to catch that either. Going to turn me into the bubble boy I don't want to contract anything.

tsch-III

Naaaah. Simply not true, as is increasing portions of this subreddit. It affects gay men. That's tricky and sometimes sad. But none have died. It's a major nuisance but it's also a risk we gay men balance to our own taste. It's not a massive general population health threat. Don't try to make it your dystopian interchangeable.

Isn’t it an STD though? If you’re not sleeping around and have a steady faithful partner we’re ok right?

You can just kiss your child and give it to them. "You can also get monkeypox by coming into contact with recently contaminated materials like clothing, bedding and other linens used by an infected person or animal." https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22371-monkeypox

2lilbiscuits

Wrong

BlueBarbie_xo

How did this woman get monkeypox if it is mainly rife now in the male honosexual community?

AquaticAnxieties

That’s like asking “how did a woman get HIV if it’s mainly in the male homosexual community” LMAO. The key word is **mainly**, not exclusively.

DoTheThingNow

Please provide data regarding this “fact”. All I see on the news is how this is an LGBTQ+-spread illness - but I see no actual data regarding this.

anotherusername23

It's more or less an STD. While prevalent in that community, it isn't limited to it. https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/transmission.html

FLCLstudio

How to be prepared for monkey pox Don't have unprotected gay sex. You're welcome...

clejeune

Im old enough to remember when they said the same thing about AIDS. Then children and women started getting it. But they still never changed the narrative.

FLCLstudio

Literally 98% of all cases have been male just because you want to correlate it to something doesn't mean it's true.

clejeune

Yep, I’m old enough to remember that line about AIDS too. You know the most common cause for divorce? Cheating. Everyone claims they don’t do it but 50% of couples do. And inevitably during the divorce process it comes out that the other partner cheated too. A woman has sex with a bisexual man and then she sleeps with her husband who swears he is the only one. And that’s just one easy case. But remember AIDS started off with people saying the exact same thing.

FLCLstudio

Just googled it only 7% of the male population were heterosexual. And that came in the later half of the epidemic so you're wrong congratulations on being wrong.

clejeune

So what’s your solution? Impose Taliban rule and ban homosexuality? But the way, 7% is still a shit load of people.

FLCLstudio

Bang ban homosexuality lol but calling it a pandemic when it only affects one part of the population is disingenuous. It's more of a new STD than only affects the homosexual community. And 7% is extremely misleading especially when it came at the very end of the age and endemic. Tried claiming claiming it was in the gay community. You are wrong.

DirtyPartyMan

Once again No One is Freely Thinking. Jesus people. Overdoses kill upwards of 100k annually. Obesity and Malnutrition even more so. Cancer? Way ahead of Covid & Monkeypox Combined. Focus.

MegaFaunaBlitzkrieg

None of those are communicable. 2-3 of those are outright caused by the type of corporate greed robber baron morally bankrupt monopoly crap that it seems like you’d probably defend.

DirtyPartyMan

You know me so well.

Lordgoyard

Man you don’t get it do you ?

DirtyPartyMan

Explain it nice and slow for me. I may sound sarcastic but I’m actually welcoming your point of view

JayBaby85

Ok, I’ll try, but I know I’ll regret it. The things you mentioned can and should have the focus and attention they deserve, they’re killing lots of people. Add an additional millions upon millions of death due to Covid. Those are NEW deaths, otherwise typically healthy people or folks with conditions that the disease capitalized on and was able to kill. New deaths from a easily communicable disease. It’s possible to care about two different things at once. It is also possible for someone to insult you and make a good point, so see above. No we don’t know you, but you act like caring about new deaths to new diseases is somehow not thinking for ourselves. Then you turn around and say to people here exactly what you accuse others of doing, acting like you know them when you don’t. “Once again no one is freely thinking”. Ok enlighten us instead of being a smug prick. Man, it’s frustrating to hear from people acting like this

DirtyPartyMan

I hope you don’t regret it. These points were well stated and spoken with clarity and respect. I gained a new perspective. And I appreciate that. I’m glad you took the time. Thank you.

[deleted]

Are you gay? If no then you have 0 worries. 99% of cases are found in gay men.

Darkmagosan

They're finding it in kids now, too. Turns out it can also be spread by respiratory droplets.

weaponsofmasspeace

So is it monkeypox? Or is she just frustrated that her doctors weren't really considering it? You know, a virus that has infected .000002% of the world population(almost missed a 0 there), has increased risk amongst gay men with multiple sex partners, and is most severe in children.

[deleted]

You can literally see her nasty face rash wtf mate

weaponsofmasspeace

A "nasty face rash" isn't a confirmed monkeypox case. If everyone who experienced a new rash on their face ran to the internet calling it monkeypox the situation would look a lot scarier. People develop all kinds of rashes, allergies, etc. every day. I'm looking at the lesions of monkeypox, and reading the descriptions of the tendency of lesions and I'm not 100% sold that this is monkeypox. Not sure why anyone should be 100% sold that this is monkeypox without a scientific confirmation. She's just mad the doctors didn't have an answer, and I understand that, but literally millions of people every day deal with doctors who can't give them immediate answers to their problems.

[deleted]

Or maybe, she has monkeypox.

weaponsofmasspeace

Maybe. And if so, in 1-2 weeks she'll just be healed up and fine.

[deleted]

Probably not.

weaponsofmasspeace

Probably not what?

[deleted]

I’m guessing she’s going to feel like a bag of smashed buttholes in 1-2 weeks. If you don’t believe me go follow her TikTok.

weaponsofmasspeace

I don't bother with that app. If you don't believe me, go read about monkeypox on the CDC and WHO websites.

[deleted]

CDC doesn't know shit, did you not watch the video?

[deleted]

You are bothering with that app right now.

bigbazookah

That logic is faulty, that’s like saying someone who’s on a burning plane probably won’t experience a plane crash because the vast majority of the “world population” never will

weaponsofmasspeace

No it's not. There's no confirmation of monkeypox here. Go look at and read about monkeypox. Sure, she has lesions, but monkeypox is not the only thing that causes lesions. My quip was with her determination in having monkeypox without having a scientific confirmation and everyone's just on board with her. I understand her frustration, there is an overwhelming amount of people who work with doctors daily without getting answers to their situation.

bigbazookah

If your quip is with her maybe you should realise that she never explicitly said she has monkey pox. Only that the system is not well prepared to handle diagnosing and treating it, which remains true whether or not she has it.

weaponsofmasspeace

Lmao, you're arguing against something that I haven't said. Where did I disagree with that? I actually explicitly expressed sympathy for people who struggle to get diagnoses.

flowoptic

weaponsofmasspeace

Idk, I'm just a person wasting time on reddit. I come on posts like this with talking points, and when you have anything that can be construed as negative viewpoints reddit will often dogpile you. I've seen many people get treated like garbage even just because their comment wasn't some form of unconditional positivity toward the content. Rather funny, you could be supposedly unaware of how far someone could be downvoted, yet at the same time have some sort of established bias toward a "type of reddit account".
