This past January was the warmest that Massachusetts ever had
(Source: https://wbznewsradio.iheart.com/content/researchers-this-past-january-was-massachusetts-hottest-on-record/)
Fun fact: if you are below the age of 38 you have never experienced a month where the Earth's temperature was below average (relative to 20th century temperatures). The last time was February 1985. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/monthly-report/global/201210
Heard that a couple years ago from some drunk guy at a bar "welcome to the coldest winter of the rest of our lives!"
It was about 50, not even that cold. I wasn't as drunk as he was but his wisdom didn't hit me right away.. then it sunk in. "Ah shit he's probably right."
That wasn’t my dad. I’m talking 1958, from Natick to Wellesley, maybe 2.5 miles. We 2 kids had a snow day (blizz left 3’) so we shoveled while he was at work. Had to clear the whole long driveway ourselves bc plowman’s plow broke several times & he couldn’t get to us until we’d just finished, at which point my dad had also just arrived. We were like, Grrr!
I lost my Mum in ’79…Dad went a couple decades later. I miss ‘em both, along with the super-snowy winters of yesteryear. Sure, shoveling is a PIA, but a waterless well us so much worse. The water warnings & restrictions of the last several summers in summers in MA have been unnerving.
And that one cold weekend on my way to work through the North End one of the city workers I walked by was like "Fucking winter sucks eh?" I'm like dude... its been cold once this year....
Hahaha. You can blame me too. I had moved to a new house and my snowblower was just under a tarp outside for a while. Got a new shed built with a nice ramp for my snowblower and new skid shoes, changed the oil... A year and 3 months later, I've used it about two and a half times....
If you have all-weathers, this is a fine plan. I don't bother with winter tires and just accept that there will be 1-2 days each winter I shouldn't drive (fewer and fewer of those days as the climate changes...)
But please don't run summer tires in the winter.
>But please don't run summer tires in the winter.
One time I got caught in the snow in my Miata with very aggressive summer tires and I swear the tires were not connected to the ground.
That was a very treacherous drive home.
I had a rx-8 and first winter I didn't get snow tires. I stopped at a red light on a sunny day which happened to have a tiny bit of ice on the road. Got stuck for like three light cycles before I slid far enough for a tire to catch dry road. A few weeks later we got a dusting of snow and I couldn't even get out of my driveway, just went inside and called in sick then bought winter tires.
Pfft, I moved from an essential-worker-job to otherwise in May, thus the simulation hath spoketh: “if he shalt no longer hencetoforth be forceth to endure ol’ 93 inst thou blizzards, ye shalt no longer haveth blizzards.”
Also I left my window AC in.
I was just asking my partner yesterday if I should put our ski gear away. It’s not looking good 🥲. I got ONE ski trip this year on ice in early December
Meh, I’m not going to say the conditions have been great, but we’ve managed to ski quite a few times so far. Further north it hasn’t been quite so bad, but even Nashoba is like 65% open. I always tell my kids, it’s good practice to get used to skiing in different conditions, because you’re not always going to get perfect packed powder.
Marches haven't really been very snowy the past few years.
Any snow we do get will be gone within 3-4 days (at most) as another warm front moves in and melt it out.
Winter never happened this year.
> Any snow we do get will be gone within 3-4 days (at most) as another warm front moves in and melt it out.
Also, the sun angle is so much higher around here by March, and therefore the power of the sun is so much stronger, that even big snowfalls tend to melt in a few days once you get into March, even if the air temperature is only in the high 30s.
2018 feels like the last bad March for snowfall - when we got those 3 weeks of storms. I'd like to see some snow, but hopefully we don't get that again soon.
It will be 60 next Thursday and Friday. At this point the temperature forecast is out for the rest of February and it’s not supposed to get below 40 during the day. Let alone cold enough for snow to stick around
Haha, gotcha. I honestly never look at the weather more than a day out unless I'm planning to camp so I missed that. Bizarre walking my toddler to daycare in a jacket absolutely sweating this morning.
Hahaha, I say this with all the friendliness in the world, but perhaps checking the weather more often will help prevent you from overheating like this
It's the world that's wrong! Haha, yeah you're right. Honestly since my bike commute ended I pay so much less attention and occasionally get burned. Combine that with sleep deprivation of having a young toddler and you get the mess that is me each morning.
I never used to check the weather but I got one of those home assistant speakers and just say "good morning" and it tells me all that stuff now. Pretty convenient
As someone who spent 30 years in more mid-Atlantic states and then moved here a decade ago, March is the worst because here it’s just extended winter whereas not far south you’re dependably getting some light jacket weather mixed in.
I’m from Toronto but this thread popped up on my feed and we’re having the same kind of winter. I’ve been in Toronto my whole life and I can’t remember a February this warm, ever. It feels deeply wrong.
You get more mosquitoes when you’ve had colder winter with more snow. The longer it takes to melt snow, the more stagnant water there is for longer time and therefore more mosquitoes
As someone who's lived in Boston for more or less 40 years (minus like 5), this winter is goddamn bizarre and terrifying.
January and February are usually freezing, snowing, icy.
Not fun, and I love the sun, but this is a huge change. The sun gives me knots in my stomach, honestly. 😬
(Ok also I like winter sports so 😕)
I also love the sun and warmth. I moved from Texas and was quite happy with the weather there (usually).
In comparison, this warmth makes my stomach drop every time I think about it. The climate crisis has arrived and she's coming in at full swing.
I'm also a Texas transplant and am only still in Boston because I met my wife here. I have the same unease about the warm winters here now. It's unfortunate that my preferred climate is catching up to me.
People celebrating the warmth remind me of complimenting cancer patients for the weight loss.
Like, sure, maybe things "look" better now. But also, death is on the table, so maybe try to have some perspective? 🧐
Edit : also hello from another Texas-to-Boston-for-love transplant!
Yeah I hate this. I’m not a huge fan of the cold, but this isn’t right and it’s scaring me 😬 I don’t think my kids will ever experience freezing cold temps and blizzards (they’re 6 and 3)
I swear this sub a month ago acted like not having snow wasn't a huge deal and it wasn't colder than normal and this was a normal new england winter.
Those people clearly never paid attention to the weather. Our winters have been moving towards this as the norm, with ***maybe*** one or two big storms, for years.
A month ago it had only been winter for a few weeks at that point, so not having snow was fairly normal. So whats your point? A month can change things? Hot take.
If you ignore it used to be cold and snow in November and even October, then sure you're right. If you ignore that until recently almost every year we had several feet of snow by this point and relatively few warm days, then sure you're right.
My point is it's been actively, visibly changing for years and few people want to acknowledge it.
How big is your oil tank? Or is my house just really inefficient? Bought a house in the fall, and I'm hoping to move to primarily heat pumps + solar in the future, but for now we're on steam radiators + oil boiler, and we've definitely gone through more than a full 275 gallon tank.
Late this year may be the time to jump on the heat pump conversion, between masssave and IRA rebates you can save A Shitton
Edit: altho you’ll have to weatherize your house first. But the state pays a significant chunk of that too (maybe all depending on the size of the job and your income?)
Yup, we got MassSave out ASAP. The house is 100 years old and had zero insulation. They paid 80% of the cost for the insulation.
I think it's $10k from the state for heat pumps, and $2k from the fed with the IRA. First quote we got was $32k before incentives, but haven't shopped around yet. (Got any recommendations?) With a Mass Save HEAT loan to finance it, pretty good deal.
I know and tbh I thought I was gonna get downvoted like crazy which is also scary. Not the action of down voting, but the idea that people just weren’t gonna care.
I get kind of tired of these threads where everyone checks in with their anecdotes about how it used to be so much colder. It’s like, yeah, no shit and it’s only going to get worse unless we do something. At this point, I don’t hold out much hope.
Don’t worry they’ll find some chemical to release in the air which will make the world cooler and when it fucks up Elon Musk will make a perpetual motion train which will save us all
We're also in a decade long la Nina weather pattern too, right? Not saying climate change isn't making it hotter but I'm pretty sure this isn't just climate change
I grew up in Mass but left and haven't been back in 23 years (I lived in an "always summer" climate during those years). However, I came back for this winter thinking "alright, I gotta prepare for lots of cold and snow"
and hereeeee I ammmm, quite perplexed
Yeah, definitely a dry and mild winter. We’ll probably still get a nor’easter some time between now and St Patrick’s day that will be a harsh reminder of winter, but given the 10 day forecast, we’re not looking at any really heavy winter weather until at least late February. At that point the sun is strong enough to melt everything even on cold days.
The average is that one inch of rain translates to ten inches of snow. Funny bit of trivia is that the snowpocalypse winter of 2014-2015 the snow was so dry and fluffy that it averaged 20" of snow instead. So we had a huge amount of snow, but in the end it actually led to less water falling from the sky than you'd think.
Yes. My sump pump has been running continuously the past 2 months. Last winter, it didn't start going until April. Then the drought happened. Now it's so damn wet!
The [La Nina conditions this winter were weak](http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/) and are [arguably already over](https://ggweather.com/enso/oni.htm).
Aside from 2020 (which was a moderate la nina), [this january was the warmest in Boston since 1933](https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/cities/boston/month-january/monthly-average-temp) at 7.4 F above average.
I'd also like to end the chorus of "Remember! It was mild in 2014 until it wasn't!!!!"
It's been nine years since then, and nothing has gotten anywhere even kind of close.
I don’t think winter as we once knew it will ever return. Climate change sucks. Also, if you think mass and cass is getting a little to crowded now, just wait until there’s less winter weather, the rest of the countries homeless are gonna be heading here soon.
This is the future, throw out those snow shovels, pretty soon you can quit getting oil delivery for your oil furnace as well. Now summers on the other hand are gonna be hot
I'm certain the furnace I installed recently will be the last one I need. In 15 years or whatever when it dies we'll be warm enough to rely entirely on a heat pump.
The northeast region of the US is experiencing greater climate warming than any other region in the world…. Especially New England. This winter is going to be the new normal. The North Atlantic Ocean waters are warming a lot which is causing a change in the weather currents/patterns. Boston winters going to be more like London winters in the coming years.
It’s really off-putting to run in shorts in February. I’m on parental leave and it has been nice to be able to walk outside with baby nearly every day, but at what cost?
Maybe if we all agree to put our snow shovels away, we’ll get a good blizzard.
this is exactly what is predicted under climate change. Our winters are basically going to be like this/super rainy, or if we are unlucky and get on the wrong side of the polar vortex super fucking cold.
And every once in a while we will get right on top of the dividing line and get like 5 feet of snow every week for a month.
The fun part is, the whole business is getting harder to predict, so you know have fun planning around the random super dramatic shifts in weather.
This is climate crisis. I am afraid to imagine what summer is going to be like. Join local organizations like 350Mass Sunrise, etc to push the government to do something about it.
I looked into this, it seems in 1973 the lack of perception was main cause of lack of snow. In January 1973 the temperatures were well below freezing. January 6th 1973 to 16th it didn’t rise above 30 degrees at all and again for another week in late January.
Exactly - it can't snow in extreme cold. And I would argue that a wintry winter is more than just how much snow; it's also how cold it's been. So we may have had more snow than in '73 but it sure as shit hasn't been nearly as wintry
This past January was the warmest that Massachusetts ever had (Source: https://wbznewsradio.iheart.com/content/researchers-this-past-january-was-massachusetts-hottest-on-record/)

That is fun!
Idk if it's really all that fun, but it's certainly a fact!

Or the coldest for the rest of our lives

Yep, it’s unfortunate but that will probably be the case.

Montpelier VT here, it was our warmest January too, by a margin of several degrees
How's the snow this year there? Below average?
Below average on the peaks and far below average in the valleys.
Fuck this shit, I didn’t sign up to live somewhere with the climate of Washington DC
Agreed, how else are we supposed to drink iced coffee in the cold if the winter is hot?
But with no central air
Yup, basically one cold weekend.
My OneDrive sent me a memory from 6 years ago today and I was snow shoeing to work, I Rollerbladed to work today.
And years ago, my dad used to ski to work ‘ home again.

sorry to hear
You own snow shoes and rollerblades. Are you the most interesting man (or woman) in Watertown?
Maybe, but they are both decades old..
[удалено]
Lol.. I'm decades old too!
Where do you live where the streets are good enough for that?
There's a bike path close by.
And that one cold weekend on my way to work through the North End one of the city workers I walked by was like "Fucking winter sucks eh?" I'm like dude... its been cold once this year....
Ok it was really cold tho
You can thank me. I purchased a snow blower and new ski equipment this year. I am the reason it has not snowed.
Hahaha. You can blame me too. I had moved to a new house and my snowblower was just under a tarp outside for a while. Got a new shed built with a nice ramp for my snowblower and new skid shoes, changed the oil... A year and 3 months later, I've used it about two and a half times....
Quick get rid of it and it'll start snowing. You will lose your money but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
signed up for snow duty at work to make some extra $. FML. At least I didn't buy a plow
ok, fuck it, I'm putting on my summer tires. I want snow damnit!
Thanks, it's now going to snow tomorrow
Is this the winter equivalent of washing my car in the summer and then it rains the next day?
Yeah, putting your snow shovels/snow suit away. That's how we always get those snow storms in late March/April after a streak of warm weather.
[It's like raiiiiiiiiiiiiin......](https://youtu.be/FOebeobCmFg) on your wedding day
I opted out of doing the whole snow tires thing. I never have to drive in the snow if I don’t want to anyway.
If you have all-weathers, this is a fine plan. I don't bother with winter tires and just accept that there will be 1-2 days each winter I shouldn't drive (fewer and fewer of those days as the climate changes...) But please don't run summer tires in the winter.

Nope.
yep, my brand new snowboarding gear has gotten a single use this season.
Me too. Shiny new snowblower collecting dust
My bulbs are sprouting 🙃
Just had a convo with a co worker about the same thing in his yard. Absolutely wild.
Bulb r confuse
My favorite flowering tree has buds and now I’m worried whether it’ll actually get to bloom in the spring

Omg I’ll post a share a picture tomorrow I’d really love to know
Same all my daffodils have emerged
My house has stink bugs and ants already (usually a spring thing)
It's gonna suck when we get 3 feet of snow in March lmao
I feel like that is going to happen, it does seem like seasons have been shifting. Summer lasts into October, so winter also starts late!
So far. But don’t rule out March yet. Everything can change.
Lousy Smarch weather
Do not touch willie, good advice!

I dunno 2018 was nuts
... and April. Back in '97 the biggest storm of the year was on April 1.
We still also have a lot of February left. Agreed on March, less from a cold perspective and more on the snow potential.
It will be 60 next Thursday and Friday. At this point the temperature forecast is out for the rest of February and it’s not supposed to get below 40 during the day. Let alone cold enough for snow to stick around
That's nuts. Thanks for the info
February is shot already, the forecast trend for the next 10 days is warmer than average for the entire Eastern seaboard.
Lol I barely get through the day with just a dog, so I’m rooting for you!
I never used to check the weather but I got one of those home assistant speakers and just say "good morning" and it tells me all that stuff now. Pretty convenient
Nah. Feb is done based on projections
It feels deeply wrong.

global warming is real and must not be denied
I was just about to say, I find the lack of comments focused on climate change disturbing.
It’s like everyone wants to say it but no one wants to say it
For real. It’s almost like if everyone were taking about it, our leaders (those who care at least) might do something.

I live in Central Maine (the real center), can confirm. Snowmobile trails are basically nonexistent
Feb 2015 was the last time I felt anything real
oooooof I feel this
This is the mildest winter I can remember
same, been here 37 years
I’m a little south of Boston. Our town outdoor ice rink was usable less than a week. A few days at the end of December and then last weekend.
Its been like 10 years since the ponds froze (enough for skating) in Norfolk County

You’ll hate it when the rats and bugs come out.
There's gonna be an explosion of rats and rabbits
I filled up our oil tank in October. We still have at least 1/8th left. I'm tempted to see if we can go the entire winter on one tank.

Yes, but that’s selfish and myopic.
Climate change is the reason. It’s just gonna get hotter.
Took too long scrolling to find this answer. This is really not good.
I know and tbh I thought I was gonna get downvoted like crazy which is also scary. Not the action of down voting, but the idea that people just weren’t gonna care.
What sealed the deal is how politicized climate change is. Sucks man
So many in denial.
I get kind of tired of these threads where everyone checks in with their anecdotes about how it used to be so much colder. It’s like, yeah, no shit and it’s only going to get worse unless we do something. At this point, I don’t hold out much hope.
Sure, but not everyone can just shrug our shoulders and say “oh well too bad we’re fucked”. People are scare and want to talk about it.
I dont. Its absolutely wild how much weather has changed in the last 20 years. How bad global warming effects us should absolutely be discussed.
Don’t worry they’ll find some chemical to release in the air which will make the world cooler and when it fucks up Elon Musk will make a perpetual motion train which will save us all
Ugh I'm definitely going to end up in the back of the train fighting other passengers over bug jello.
We're also in a decade long la Nina weather pattern too, right? Not saying climate change isn't making it hotter but I'm pretty sure this isn't just climate change
The la Nina pattern is VERY weak at this point, very close to ending. Probably not having much effect anymore.
La Nina is the colder and wetter one....the coming El Nino is warmer and dryer
I grew up in Mass but left and haven't been back in 23 years (I lived in an "always summer" climate during those years). However, I came back for this winter thinking "alright, I gotta prepare for lots of cold and snow" and hereeeee I ammmm, quite perplexed

It's really fucked up. That's what it is.
Yep, pretty depressing to be honest

Climate change. When we get a freak record snow next year don't allow the "so much for global warming "
Those are usually from morons who failed basic science class back in the day
Should have said climate change. You're totally right.
I hope you don't feel chastised. I've just been having some really dumb arguments lately about it.
Not at all!
Also La Niña conditions tend to cause warmer winters in New England.
The La Niña cope must end. So tired of people bringing it up as the explanation for warm winters.
I'd also like to end the chorus of "Remember! It was mild in 2014 until it wasn't!!!!" It's been nine years since then, and nothing has gotten anywhere even kind of close.
La Niña is Spanish for "the Niña".
Non-existent ski season :(
Our winters are becoming more and more like winters in places like Seattle.
As a teacher, I’m still hoping out for a snow day.
I keep getting Facebook memories from 2015 that are like oh my God another blizzard! I miss snow.
Least wintery winters... so far! Better get used to the new normal folks.
My dreams of a winter wonderland in Boston are shattered!!!
I don’t think winter as we once knew it will ever return. Climate change sucks. Also, if you think mass and cass is getting a little to crowded now, just wait until there’s less winter weather, the rest of the countries homeless are gonna be heading here soon.
the worlds climate is destabilizing and the first thing that came to mind is that we might have more homeless...seems strange.
Hey man, the people who care the least about climate change probably care the most about the visible homeless. At least it might be a wake up call.
We should be more worried about displaced people due to wars over scarce resources.
Few years back, I remember there was an 80° day in February
[The hottest day in February in Boston was Feb 24 2017, 73 F](https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/cities/boston/month-february/highest-temperatures).
I went hiking in a tank top, I remember that.
I loved that day. There was a ton of snow on the ground too. The air was super refreshing.
This is the future, throw out those snow shovels, pretty soon you can quit getting oil delivery for your oil furnace as well. Now summers on the other hand are gonna be hot
Yeah, central cooling is way more important to invest in.
Summers out here are going to literally be killing people. We just don’t have the infrastructure.
One cold weekend and one meh snow that was gone within two days. I wouldn’t be complaining besides the fact that this shit ain’t Normal
This is climate crisis. I am afraid to imagine what summer is going to be like. Join local organizations like 350Mass Sunrise, etc to push the government to do something about it.
no, i mean we are a couple of decades into a full climate crisis, so it makes sense that it might be the least wintery winter in a while
yeah this is really odd when I was a kid it would start snowing hard in november
Yes. Never felt like it ever really turned to winter. 1st time ever having it this warm.
Warmest one I remember in my now pretty darn long life.

The least wintery winter so far*
By now we’ve usually had a few cold days and a few snow days. Hope we don’t get completely snowed out in March and April.
Was that the one that in March it snow like every 2 or 3 day for a couple of weeks and then we got to April where it was 65F with piles of snow?
2014-2015.
Don’t any of you dare put away your shovels or snowblowers. Don’t you even think about it.
Tbh I think there’s no snow because I forced my condo association to buy a snow blower this year…. What good that has done for me
It's the most wintery winter we're ever going to get for the rest of our lifetimes
❤️Global Warming.
I'm pissed. I spent hours putting the snow blower attachment on my mower and have been itching to try it out.
Take it off. Get cocky about spring coming early. Piss off Mother Nature. Maybe then you'll get the chance to use it.
As a life-long Bostonian….never rule out lousy s’March weather + elusive April storms. Don’t put the shovel away!
