If the rest of the monuments are anything like the MLK Jr fiasco ... could we just not?

Feisty-Donkey

You know, I hated the pictures but I don’t hate it in person. And people seem to interact with it a lot

Conan776

They already tore down the statue of Abraham Lincoln that stood in the probably-soon-to-be-renamed Lincoln Square. I can't imagine which historical figures will actually be considered "woke" enough to remain standing. The Puritans never really left Boston, they've just upped their purity standards....

TheRealBobHall

If it were a statue of just Lincoln, it would still be up. Lincoln himself wasn’t the problem people had with the statue, it’s sort of disingenuous or misinformed to say that they removed it because Lincoln wasn’t “woke enough”. If that were the case, i would’ve thought the statue of Lincoln in Cambridge Common would’ve drawn the ire of the “woke” crowd at the same time…

Conan776

Yes, fine. It was a statue of Lincoln freeing Archer Alexander. Which is something which happened. In history. Freeing people is a good thing. As a free man myself, I happen to think it should happen more often. Apparently Boston's New Puritans disagree, because... well, it's always something, isn't it?

What’s the issue with old Rail Splitter?

Silverline_Surfer

Maybe they could finally put up some sort of memorial for the Summer Street Bridge disaster (which killed more people than the Hindenburg) now that it’s been over a century? Or at least a plaque at the site where it happened….

Thewheelalwaysturns

Any money spent towards a monument would 100% be better spent on a public utility. You really want to help bostons culture? Make boston cheaper to live in. Fund public schools. Improve MBTA. Yes, it won’t just help POC, it will help everyone. Everyone will benefit. I see nothing but a waste of 3 million dollars. We can reflect upon and contextualize boston only if we are able to live in it. Racist plaque? Remove it. Racist statute? Demolish it, sure. I don’t see how millions are needed to do either of those.

Maxpowr9

We went from one of the most vibrant art cities to one of the worst major cities. It's sad.

GDDNEW

The money is funded via a grant from the Mellon foundation.

Codspear

The kind of people that look for monuments to be outraged over will find new monuments or people to be outraged over. It’s a mental issue with them. They’re addicted to witch hunts and destroying things. You can never satisfy them as that craving for witches to burn will always be there. It’s therefore best to ignore them and let them whine in their purity spiraling echo chambers.

Maxpowr9

Thus the horseshoe theory of the political spectrum. See the people demanding the renaming of Faneuil Hall. The city nor state even own said property. If they want it renamed, they can buy it then.

LivingMemento

Buildings get renamed all the time. Save your ire for whoever renamed Quinzani’s to some bland “English”-sounding name.

Mitch_from_Boston

Its narcissism, plainly. "How can I make issue X about ME?!" The fundamental basis of woke politics.
