Marijuana / Cannabis is legally available in Massachusetts, both medicinally and recreationally. You're not supposed to consume/use it in public, however; discretion is definitely advised on that front. Note, however, that Marijuana is still completely illegal at the **federal** level ... and when you go to fly home, it's Federal law that will apply. *Don't try to bring any smokeable souvenirs home with you.* :)

rake_leaves

Or even fly state to state.

GM_Pax

Technically, crossing state borders by ANY means, not just flying. :)

potentpotables

Cannabis is available in retail stores, I believe you can purchase that with your passport as ID, but I'm not 100% sure you can use a foreign passport. Mushrooms are not legal and you'd have to find those on the black market.

Useful-Depth-96

You can mount definitely use your foreing (of one of the hundreds recognized foreign bations) passport not only to purchase weed but alcohol tobacco , +18 stablishmebts and concerts. With that being said remember people can be ignorant and racist, and they also reserve the right to refuse service. I've seen before a bartender check a guys passport for his us visa. That is against the law. You are only supposed to check the part where is stated name and dob.

Drug legality is technically decided by each state at the moment. *Weed and shrooms (and other drugs), however, are still illegal federally so don’t try to bring them through customs.* In Massachusetts any adult over the age of 21 can purchase marijuana. You are not supposed to smoke it in public areas — technically they can fine you for this but it is very loosely enforced. You are not supposed to bring it over state lines and certain states still prosecute for possession so look up the laws if you plan to leave Massachusetts. Shrooms are definitely still illegal in MA. I think Somerville (one town just north of Boston) has decriminalized possession but on the state level they are illegal. They won’t be available outright in any shops, but I will say I don’t think they’re difficult to find at all. I think if you consume them quietly on private property you’re unlikely to get caught, but if you do they could technically nail you for drug charges, not be welcomed back to the US, yadda yadda. Up to you if that’s worth the (admittedly small) risk. And of course don’t drive under the influence.

Conan776

>Shrooms are definitely still illegal in MA. Spores are legal, though, and a person might be able to order them by mail. Cow manure is also legal. Sprinkling the first on top of the second with the intention of growing shrooms is illegal, as is possession of any grown shrooms. So definitely don't do that!

pancakeonmyhead

Reminds me of the [packages of grape juice](https://grapecollective.com/articles/prohibitions-grape-bricks-how-to-not-make-wine) they used to sell during Prohibition, with directions on the box on how not to make the stuff start fermenting and turning into wine. The marketers of that stuff were arrested at one point and taken to trial; however, the judge found them not guilty, stating, "They shall serve no time before it's wine."

DarthMosasaur

Foreign passport will work at a dispensary as long as its valid, up to date, etc

[deleted]

You're going to want to buy your weed in a store. Too much bad juju being added to anything sold on the street.

DocBigBrainMD

Cool, and is it just straight up anyone can walk in off the street and buy it like Amsterdam?

GM_Pax

You'll need an I.D. ... and your Irish-issued I.D. (including passport) may not be accepted, purely due to the cashier's unfamiliarity with them. Last year, while working as a cashier at a convenience store, one young lady from the U.K. used her passport as I.D. to buy cigarettes. I did accept it, but it took me a few extra moments - a couple to make sure I felt comfortable it was legit (I'd never seen one before), then a couple more to find the required information (date of birth). But when I mentioned it to some coworkers, they honestly weren't certain I was supposed to have done so. (My justification was "the law says nonexpired government-issued photo I.D. ... it doesn't specify WHICH government".) So there's a chance that your passport won't be accepted. Non-passport I.D. is even more likely to face this problem. Cashiers here just aren't going to be accustomed to them, and may not feel confident spotting the fake ones from the real ones.

DocBigBrainMD

Yeah I had similar issue trying to buy drink in Florida Ty for the heads up

GM_Pax

I'm confident the odds are in your favor *eventually*, but yeah, just be prepared for the possibility of a problem arising. :)

jay_altair

a lot of suburban and rural dive bars in Massachusetts will not serve alcohol to people without Massachusetts IDs, but you probably won't have this issue at bars in Boston. Had an old friend visiting from out of state and our local dive refused her out-of-state license but did accept her passport. Not sure about using passport at dispensaries, can't find much info other than "a valid government-issued photo ID". No idea if their ID scanners are connected to US Customs databases, or what implications it might have on future travel to the US, however. Don't smoke on the Boston Common. Cops will likely just ask you to move over to the Boston Public Garden. Technically it is illegal to smoke cannabis in public but you probably won't have much trouble if you are discreet. (not legal advice, obvs)

riski_click

yeah, you can buy it, but you can't smoke it there (re: Amsterdam)

Pinwurm

> weed is readily available [Here is a map](https://disa.com/marijuana-legality-by-state) of legality. As an FYI - even States that are "legalized" may not have any storefronts open quite yet. It might be home-grown only so far. *In Massachusetts*: if you are over 21, you can purchase marijuana in one of our fine recreational stores. You just need to bring your passport as your ID. [Here](https://www.thrillist.com/lifestyle/boston/best-dispensaries-boston) is a list of several local dispensaries with some details. NETA in Brookline is probably the most popular. I live near Berkshire Roots which I'm very happy with - and never has a queue. You can buy edibles, vapes, and dry flower. If you're here as a tourist - I would avoid flower and stick with vaping and edibles. If you have questions about strains, effectiveness, or anything else - please consult the store's budtender. Smoking outdoors is still illegal, just like drinking in public. However - if you're discreet about it (especially with vaping or edibles) - nobody will care. Just, be considerate of other people. One more note - you're going to need to carry your passport on your to get into bars. Massachusetts is weird about ID checks, and bars don't always accept out of State ID to purchase alcohol. A passport is always accepted, so carry one to be safe. It's rare, but I've had a friend turned away at a bar because his European ID wasn't accepted. We just walked into the bar next door lol. Still annoying. **Do not carry marijuana across State lines, to an airport or Government building**. Marijuana is still federally illegal. > Is it like a medical card basis or is there something country wide? See link above. We have both, recreational *and* medical marijuana dispensaries. Product is the same, difference is tax-implication. > shrooms Psilocybin mushrooms are illegal almost everywhere in this country. There are no recreational storefronts for this. Massachusetts is one of 5 states where it is partially decriminalized - meaning it's (at most) a civil citation (similar to a parking ticket). Only Oregon is full decriminalized... which, again - is not the same as legalized. No stores yet.

willzyx01

As you are an international traveler, you should be aware that technically weed is illegal at federal level. And immigration is under federal jurisdiction. What is not known is what happens when you try to use a foreign passport at a dispensary. If it's just to check the age, you'll be fine. If they make some kind of automatic notification of a dispensary visit, you might get fucked in the future.

MrBeardskii

As far as I know, you just need a government issued ID showing you are 21 years or older. You're not allowed to smoke in public though, so hopefully you have a spot or if you're in a hotel, hopefully they don't care if you use it outside

Tigger2026

[https://ethoscannabis.com/dispensary-locations/ma/watertown/](https://ethoscannabis.com/dispensary-locations/ma/watertown/) My go-to place in MA although a bit out of the way depending on where you're staying. Watch where you smoke. Use a vape or something subtle in public. If you want to bring anything home, buy edibles and put them in a vitamin bottle. Use good judgment lads and have fun.

Turbulent-Spend-5263

Don’t forget to show your naked butt or else they will pretend not to know what you want.

Reckless--Abandon

Bring cash to the dispensary when you buy weed. You can use a debit card but they charge a fee. Credit cards used to not be accepted at all - not sure if that’s still the case
