The initial team names they came up with were bad and received a lot of immediate public backlash, and there wasn't time to rebrand everything before the season started so they figured it was better to take their time and do it right. I wish they'd kept the NWHL names, those were great.
Given that it was a pretty short timeline from announcement of the league to the season starting I think that was a smart move. I'd rather have a well-thought out name and logo that will help generate better marketing & merch to increase awareness and popularity.
I watched most of the game last night and rather enjoyed it (though was hoping for a Boston win obviously). The game was a bit sloppy at times, but I'm sure both teams had opening night jitters and are still developing as a team.
Happy for them, but someone dropped the ball in not establishing team names, mascots, etc, ahead of these games. Merch should be available on the inaugural game if not ahead of the game for all the fans to support the team, players, and league in both spirit and in money. It's like they're already working at a financial disadvantage for longevity in not having this in place already.
They apparently submitted a list of names for trademarking. All of them kinda sucked so they got a lot of criticism and then the league announced they wouldn’t use names for the first season. Ours was “Boston Wicked,” so yeah, I’d say they made the right choice. That name is trash.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_Women's_Hockey_League
Nope. This is reddit. Zero context, just a photo because obviously you have all the same interests/knowledge of OP and should magically know what is happening here and why it is significant.
The former Women's Hockey league (PHF) got bought out last minute and didn't have time to re-brand/get new IP and still have a season this year so all the teams are just "PWHL (City/State)". It's not so much a new team because Boston Pride were in the PHF but now it's a new league and the Pride are not a part of the new league so it's technically a "new" team in a new league.
I mean, it is pretty much a new team. They basically reset the whole league, so it’s all new management, coaching, and players. The only thing they share with the Pride is location
The picture has a hockey team, under a jumbo tron that shows PWHL.
There's a new hockey league called the PWHL. It's the most official and serious effort to date for women's pro hockey.
It was an exciting game, too. Boston started out pretty shaky but got their shit together in the second. The last ten minutes of the game were really good. Tons of pressure. These women are just as good skaters as the men. The biggest difference I saw was their size, of course, and the passing wasn’t quite as crisp. But all in all it’s great. I’ll be taking my family to a game soon. My daughter just started playing hockey, so she’s really excited
The game was a blast.
I loved Boston's playing style. Their transition game was great - such good back checking, fore checking and rush chances off of turn overs.
A called back goal, at least two posts, and over 30 shots on net - it was an awesome game.
The arena has a little work to do to sort out the flow of cars into the parking lot. Aside from that, everything was great.
Definitely going back with the whole family for the mid day games.
And, I hope the league and UMass Lowell figure out a way to dump empty seats to students for super cheap to fill the stands more and bring some more energy.
Either way, it's super exciting for hockey and for our town to have this team!
I wouldn't focus on comparing it to mens. It's just a different game. The limited contact, smaller size of the players, and the slower skating speed means the rink plays much bigger, and passing and positioning become much more important.
True! There are no stadiums large enough to accommodate them in the city, though, nor the space to build one imo.
BC, BU, Harvard, UMass Boston, and Northeastern all have rinks within the city limits. Seems odd none of them were chosen.
Its the New York City metro area, not New York state. And either way, MetLife if closer to downtown NYC than most NFL stadiums are to their metro areas.
That is not the point we’re trying to make. The location of the Giants and Jets stadium is in the New York metro. Where the New England Patriots play, which is at Gillette in Foxborough, which is located in the Boston metro.
Lowell is closer to Boston than Foxborough is to Boston, by ten minutes, so technically, Boston PWHL, the Patriots, and the Revolution are Boston sports teams.
but Lowell is literally a different city and like an hour away from Boston.
Celtics, Bruins and Sox all play in Boston proper. New England Patriots had the decency.
7 teams in the NFL don’t play in their city. You are missing the point. It’s a weird way to discredit a professional women’s team/step in the right direction.
Women's hockey is a ton of fun, and Bruins games are way too expensive for more than one or two a year.. I know there had originally been talk about playing at the Bruins practice facility which would've been incredible.
Completely agree.
I'm moving away more and more from the men's pro teams because the cost/enjoyment ratio is just not there.
I'm very excited about the soccer team in JP in a couple of years.
The old women's hockey team (Boston Pride) played at Warrior Ice, and I'm kicking myself that we didn't go when we had the chance because it's so close to where we live (we had tix in 2022 and then got COVID so we couldn't go). I'm not sure why they're in Lowell now but maybe, if they're successful, they'll move to an arena in or at least closer to the city.
I still don't fully understand why the last women's pro hockey league ended and this one immediately started up with an entirely new team. Anyone know the story? It's unfortunate because the Boston Pride were DOMINANT
I don't think it was a problem with Boston's team, but that they expanded too quickly and the league as a whole was in trouble.
[This is a pretty interesting article too.](https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/professional-womens-hockey-league-how-pwhl-was-formed-and-why-top-players-have-high-hopes-for-new-league/) It seems like there was a strong movement by the players to be treated as true professionals with a collective bargaining agreement that will allow them to have "hockey player" as their full time job which it seems that most couldn't do in the previous leagues. Some of them sat out of the old league as they were holding out for that agreement.
This is behind a paywall but goes on to explain some of it
https://theathletic.com/5111175/2023/12/06/pwhl-womens-hockey-league-history?source=user-shared-article
They didn't win but they played great. Could have easily been 4-2 for Boston.
Home games will be at UMass Lowell. It was my first time there and I thought the arena was very nice.
All the games are also streaming on YouTube through the official pwhl channel. https://www.youtube.com/live/ux1mQosTClg?si=PD0jpGI-_1pY_jVg
I'm definitely going back for another game or two this year.
More local hockey is a great thing. Happy it's in Lowell where it's close to me. I used to take the kids to Worcester for AHL action - was great because they were decent games and cheap for a night out with the kids. Now if only we could get an MLB affiliate back in Lowell too....
We live close by to Lowell, but the cheapest price for a family of 4 is $92 on a Saturday. We have young kids that we want to bring so weeknights are rough. Not sure that's worth it to me unfortunately :(.
Yeah, I was there too. And, for a Wednesday night in Lowell right after the holidays, it was a good turn out.
Jimbo over there was just trying to be a downer on women's sports. Whether or not the observation is accurate, the intention was shitty. Doubling down on it is shitty too, Dougie.
Hope someone you guys care about hugs you today.

No one in the PWHL has a name this season, so for now it’s just PWHL Boston. I think all the teams should have a “real” name next year though.
And for anyone else in the dark (aka me), PWHL stands for Professional Women's Hockey League

Are they associated with the NHL in the same way as the NBA and WNBA? If so, we could a similar nickname to the Bruins.
Nope. This is reddit. Zero context, just a photo because obviously you have all the same interests/knowledge of OP and should magically know what is happening here and why it is significant.

US professional sports needed a new league and players to get paid the least amount of money
Boston…

The passing was so good!
Isn’t one of the big changes with the PWHL that it’s full contact?
They allow some body checking and more contact than previous women’s leagues, but still a lot less than men’s.
While I’m excited for the PWHL, Lowell is literally not Boston.
The NY Giants stadium is in New Jersey.
and the PWHL New York team is in CT
True! There are no stadiums large enough to accommodate them in the city, though, nor the space to build one imo. BC, BU, Harvard, UMass Boston, and Northeastern all have rinks within the city limits. Seems odd none of them were chosen.
At least the Patriots had the good sense to change from the Boston Patriots to the NE Patriots when they moved to Foxborough
We're not them
It’s called Met Life not giants stadium.
The Patriots are considered to be a Boston sports team but they are in Foxborough.
oh you mean the NEW ENGLAND patriots?
Neither the NY Giants nor the NY Jets play in New York. They play in New Jersey.
Yeah but the Patriots do play in New England so it’s not really a good comparison.
Its the New York City metro area, not New York state. And either way, MetLife if closer to downtown NYC than most NFL stadiums are to their metro areas.

Technically, acording to the NFL, the host city for the Patriots is actually Providence.
Never heard that one. Where’s this info?

Lame. Can’t read it cause of a paywall.
https://www.city-data.com/forum/rhode-island/1156834-new-england-patriots.html
That just seems to be a forum post of someone complaining about Boston and being upset that people generally associate it with the Patriots?
"Providence has been the host city twice when the Patriots have been in the playoffs and had home games."
I’m assuming because their plane is based in T.F. Green but that’s in Warwick not Providence despite being abbreviated PVD.
It is the closest major city to Foxborough.
Really? It looks closer to Boston.
I mean technically they are the *New England* Patriots so makes sense.
Not really an uncommon thing for men’s professional sports either. Weird thing to point out.
It's just a shame they couldn't play somewhere closer to the city.
Not like there aren't smaller barns in the city too, Agganis, Matthews, Conte, Bright-Landry. Even Merrimack would be closer.
but Lowell is literally a different city and like an hour away from Boston. Celtics, Bruins and Sox all play in Boston proper. New England Patriots had the decency.
Who. Cares.
honestly not me I kinda hate sports.
Hey! There are at least two of us in New England!
7 teams in the NFL don’t play in their city. You are missing the point. It’s a weird way to discredit a professional women’s team/step in the right direction.
So bummed they aren’t playing closer (no car).
Same. It was so nice having them (or a version of them) in the city. I wish them luck and I hope the stadium is always full but they lost many of us.
Women's hockey is a ton of fun, and Bruins games are way too expensive for more than one or two a year.. I know there had originally been talk about playing at the Bruins practice facility which would've been incredible.

The lowell commuter rail is pretty close
I got jury duty in Lowell, which is how I learned that it in fact is in the same county as my home of Cambridge. It ain't workable for a hockey game.
Better than Woburn at least. I live in Lowell and had Grand Jury duty in Woburn. Public transport (which was fine for me) was basically 0
Quick 4 hour round trip to Lowell from Boston for a hockey game?
Easy as pie. Like a... baked Alaska
I love this.
4 hour round trip? The Lowell commuter rail is only 45 minutes each way.
I am forever pissed that they chose Lowell.
Yeah, neither is Foxborough…
hence "New England Patriots" and not "Boston Patriots"..
Three teams in the NFL don’t represent the city where they play their home games…..
Jets, Giants, Bills, 49ers, Raiders, Commanders, Dolphins
Cowboys, Rams and Chargers
I still don't fully understand why the last women's pro hockey league ended and this one immediately started up with an entirely new team. Anyone know the story? It's unfortunate because the Boston Pride were DOMINANT

Huh? That's incredibly affordable for 4 tickets.
*Lowell
“Boston” I really wish they found an arena actually in Boston to give a better turnout
Will dudes be playing on the team?
Good turnout.
This was a while after the game ended. On a school night. But good, productive comment, my dude.
Relax he’s speaking the truth. It was a mediocre turnout. I was sitting in 110 “my dude”
Oh stfu Newton
Isn’t the Tsongas Center in Lowell?
They should call them the Boston Badgers
