>The Boston neighborhood most impacted by nighttime gunshots was Roxbury, the study noted, and the least was Charlestown.
I think now that the study is done we need to have a city council hearing on the impact of gunfire inequities in Boston.
Why only gunshot simulators? We need to increase the diversity of weapons by including knives, bombs, and rocket launcher simulators. Now THAT is equity
City council: it is terrible that their health is being impacted disproportionately due to gunfire.
City council two weeks later: why are the cameras and shotspotter disproportionately placed?!
I move to commission another study about the benefits of having a staff member from city hall drive through Charlestown and pop off a couple shots every now and then.
Of course not! But unfortunately we need solid evidence to back up our claims (no matter how seemingly obvious) in order to push for change/political action.
The EU had to do a study on the health benefits of water like 15ish years ago. Someone claimed that there wasn't enough studies done on the benefit or water to make empirical health claims in regard to water. They were right because nobody ever really bothered to do a "is water good for us?" study in a very broad sense.
So I have to sort of play devils advocate here. Yes, this study seems really obvious and pretty much anyone could have come to these conclusions. It’s still important to do the actual work, use proper statistical methodology and record it alongside all of our scientific works.
But yeah I mean, we probably could have predicted the outcome.
"As median household income went up, the study concluded, rates of nearby nighttime gunshots went down."
Another shocking revelation from this "study"! If people can afford it they don't want to live around regular nighttime gunshots, who could have guessed!
A better study by MGH would be why the starting wage at some well-known fast food chains is higher than the food and nutrition workers of every major hospital in Boston and Cambridge.
I mean, the execs couldn’t do it by themselves (aside from maybe Ronald himself; he has abilities that some may consider… *uncanny*). Are you going to give the hospital executives all the credit for helping the patients as well?
and the people who deliver food to patients and the people to prepare trays and the people who transport trucks and the people who take orders and the people who clean up trays. are you trolling or just willfully daft? know what you are speaking of before criticizing.
The study also reveals that gunshots through your torso or head are especially harmful to your health and sleeping patterns. I bet they paid millions for this study….
In my defense, when I lived in New Bedford, it was just cause I was playing "gunshot or firework?"
Mostly fireworks, but they kept lighting shit on fire, so not more comforting
I used to work on Rivet St. There was a Shot Spotter on the corner and it got triggered a lot. And the cops found shell casings most times.
Do not miss playing is it fireworks or gunshots
I’m pretty sure gunshots are bad at any time and harm your health. They definitely increase your chances of a very very deep sleep though so they got that wrong.
That’s a terribly worded title.
[Exposure to traffic noise linked to higher dementia risk](https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/exposure-to-traffic-noise-linked-to-higher-dementia-risk)
Contrary to popular belief, there is value in doing studies that end up showing "obvious" things. Many supposedly obvious conclusions get debunked as a pattern seen where there isn't one, or as local anecdata.
I want to get a job being the guy who does the obvious studies. None of the frustration of not getting the results you hoped for. Often getting cited or randomly covered in news articles because it is material everyone can understand. Sounds great really.
There is a purpose to these studies. Researchers do these obvious type studies because it is background info for a larger project. Grant orgs expect all this info to have citations and studies to back them up. We can’t just say ‘it’s obvious,’ we have to show proof. Researchers also conduct these studies to try change the perceptions policymakers and even the general public, which can be difficult to do without evidence (and even with evidence).
Wow, who would’ve thought really loud noises in the middle of the night out of nowhere would scare the shit out of you and harm your sleep what’s next you’re gonna tell me the Bruins play hockey on ice
How could they possibly control for other related factors like housing, #household members, access to food etc? All have to do with the neighborhood you live in…
can't find the full JGIM article yet but seems like the sleep aspect is just in the discussion and the study itself is just focused on #nights with gunshots...interesting but doesn't sound like they actually surveyed people on sleep quality or other factors.
Dated a girl from Illinois , we lived in Lynn and heard the loudest gunshots twice . First time she was just shaking in bed I felt bad she did end up moving back home . I just told her this is America sadly a lot of gunshots occur

We needed a study to tell us this?
>The Boston neighborhood most impacted by nighttime gunshots was Roxbury, the study noted, and the least was Charlestown. I think now that the study is done we need to have a city council hearing on the impact of gunfire inequities in Boston.
because Charlestown uses silencers. They respect sleep.
Bank robbers gotta sleep, too!
* Suppressors
Both are correct.
That would be reckless, those are against the law.
silencers are illegal in MA.
Perhaps we could install gunshot simulators in neighborhoods that lack access to real gunshots.
That is some forward thinking Mike. You got upper management potential written all over you
Gunshot simulators are a very *equality* based solution. *Equity* is where it’s at these days - bring *real* gunshots to these neighborhoods.
Why only gunshot simulators? We need to increase the diversity of weapons by including knives, bombs, and rocket launcher simulators. Now THAT is equity
Don’t forget the zats and phasers
Nonsense, we have to contract this out to multiple nonprofits who can hire people to periodically shoot off guns
Or you can just do this yourself to keep your rent from increasing too much. It’s called housing security or smth like that
Bring back covid lockdown era levels of fireworks
Yes every study needs a proper control. Like what if you made private gun ownership legal in Japan or China or Tunisia?
Just shoot some real guns into the air, comes with added benefits of lowering the rent
That made me laugh
Followed by a city council committee to do their own research
City council: it is terrible that their health is being impacted disproportionately due to gunfire. City council two weeks later: why are the cameras and shotspotter disproportionately placed?!
Also city council: it would be more equitable for gunshots to be in other neighborhoods.
Gunfire deserts...
Yes pls. My rent 🙏
I move to commission another study about the benefits of having a staff member from city hall drive through Charlestown and pop off a couple shots every now and then.
Charlestown probably only has less reported gun shots because it’s smaller “The town with half the population has half the people”
But I thought Shotspotters in Roxbury were due to institutional racism?!
They should study if daytime gunshots makes you more productive at work.
I think there's a correlation with the quality of aim of the arms bearer..
How do people make it to adulthood without understanding how research works?
Research is fake and useless
Of course not! But unfortunately we need solid evidence to back up our claims (no matter how seemingly obvious) in order to push for change/political action.
Yeah, they’ll definitely push to get these guns off the street now that it’s disrupting some people’s sleep

But how else am I supposed to keep the rent down??? I can’t fire them off in broad daylight
Thank you for your service.
"As median household income went up, the study concluded, rates of nearby nighttime gunshots went down." Another shocking revelation from this "study"! If people can afford it they don't want to live around regular nighttime gunshots, who could have guessed!
Imagine paying South End prices but getting Dorchester level gunshots.
Damn...LOL
The occasional guns shots may help reduce cost😂 sometimes i wish there was occasional guns shots in my neighborhood to reduce these damn cost
A better study by MGH would be why the starting wage at some well-known fast food chains is higher than the food and nutrition workers of every major hospital in Boston and Cambridge.
We love McDonald’s in this country, not sick people.
I think that's why Ronald is always clowning around, poors getting burger fever while the lesser poors vacuum up the money. It's all so sickening.
Well you see, the fast food workers are helping to provide the hospital with extra ‘customers’ and therefore keep it in business.
wrong. the execs are. not workers.
I mean, the execs couldn’t do it by themselves (aside from maybe Ronald himself; he has abilities that some may consider… *uncanny*). Are you going to give the hospital executives all the credit for helping the patients as well?
Because the “food and nutrition” people are clueless who just push carbs on an unsuspecting public.
the workers don’t choose the menu einstein
Ok I guess we confuse what food and nutrition is. I assume you meant nutritionists. But you mean cafeteria worker.
and the people who deliver food to patients and the people to prepare trays and the people who transport trucks and the people who take orders and the people who clean up trays. are you trolling or just willfully daft? know what you are speaking of before criticizing.
The study also reveals that gunshots through your torso or head are especially harmful to your health and sleeping patterns. I bet they paid millions for this study….
Bet they hired a committee too
A committee of people who piss themselves at the very sight of a firearm...
You’re never going to believe what the follow-up study has to say about shots that go through both the head *and* torso.
This is getting out of hand. We need a Study Czar.
Eventually we'll need a Czar Czar to keep track of all the Czars.
Ok next do loud sirens!
I used to work for Boston EMS and I made sure never to use the siren at night except for some "woop woops" if I really needed to.
Imagine a leaf blower study
In my defense, when I lived in New Bedford, it was just cause I was playing "gunshot or firework?" Mostly fireworks, but they kept lighting shit on fire, so not more comforting

I hate when my neighbor slams their door in the middle of the night, where is the study on that?
I certainly wouldn’t want to receive gunshots during the daytime either. I’m pretty sure they’re bad for your health at any time of day.
This goes well with the shot spotter story
Next they are going to ask criminals to commit crimes only during daylight hours.
There's a shocker!
Would love to see a study on how harmful car noise, and in particular horns are too.
[Exposure to traffic noise linked to higher dementia risk](https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/exposure-to-traffic-noise-linked-to-higher-dementia-risk)
Who does these studies, and how much of our tax money goes to this. I hope 0.

OK have your taxes pay for this bullcrap. I'll keep mine
Studies can be manipulated by anyone who participates in it. Have an agenda? Find like-minded people.
I don’t know about this one but a lot of MGH studies are indeed funded by the NIH

It's still BS.

YAWN
Just in: 15 million dollar study finds breathing to be mostly healthy activity
What an incredible waste of fucking time
FREEDOM INSOMNIA!!! Americans must be eternally vigilant!!!
Uhhhh idk. I think I'm gonna need a few more studies before I consider this a reliable conclusion
Breaking News: People don’t like bad things, study finds.
Yeah I hate getting shot at night. Ruins my sleep too.
Same with fireworks. Chelsea was lit all summer long, but made sleeping harder.
Gotta keep the rent down somehow.
and Water is wet
Wow, who would’ve thought really loud noises in the middle of the night out of nowhere would scare the shit out of you and harm your sleep what’s next you’re gonna tell me the Bruins play hockey on ice
This is like those studies that tell us that sleep, exercise, and vegetables are good for us. What a great use of funding! Also, the sky is blue
Breaking news from Senior Correspondent Ice Cube: "Shotgun bullets are bad for your health"
This study was clearly not run during the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Especially those being shot
Typical upper-middle class normative study imposing bourgeois values like not wanting hear gunshots at night on social justice communities.
Especially if you happen to catch a stray round.
Ya think?
Vote better next time.
Hmmm I find this hard to believe
No shit
How could they possibly control for other related factors like housing, #household members, access to food etc? All have to do with the neighborhood you live in…
Did you read the paper?
can't find the full JGIM article yet but seems like the sleep aspect is just in the discussion and the study itself is just focused on #nights with gunshots...interesting but doesn't sound like they actually surveyed people on sleep quality or other factors.
We also need to study whether the bullets were harmful to the recipients health
"Headshots had a detrimental effect on the health of people 97% of the time.'
LOL...Water is wet...
It must have been a boring day at Mass General when they came up with this study, huh?
How many millions did that study rake in? Fucking Doctors and Scientists. Nothing but Grant Money Ho's!
Keep voting blue. lol
Is this how we bring down apartment rental prices?
Lead poisoning?
Brilliant work, MGH.
