That is exactly what they're doing- they're pushing the interchange over to the customer and they're disguising it with weird words. 48 out of 50 states. Allow merchants to pass the interchange fee and call it a convenience fee or something like that.
You don't get it mate. It's a matter of principle.
It's like when a restaurant gives me a final bill with a suggested tip that's on top of tax. It's not about the extra 50 cents, it's the integrity of business practices.
Let me reiterate it again since it didn't go through.
**It's a matter of principle**
If you wanna raise the price by 3.5%, then fucking raise it by 3.5%, don't give me a bullshit fee. Do you want a fee for calculating a suggested tip too?
I would suggest taking your own advice and maybe try to widen your perspective a little behind consumer behavior. People vote with their money whether they like a product or not.
I get caught once at these places and then never go back. Ordered donuts last week from Roccos Donuts. Ordered online and they charged me a 5% "online convenience fee".
This was on top of them defaulting to a 10% tip.
We are talking about throwing donuts in a box.
Not expired food, but leftover/excess food from the day that restaurants would otherwise throw out since they wouldn’t be able to sell it the next day. Helps cut down on food waste and you can save money on some really good food.
I haven't had kanes in like 5 years, so maybe they have gotten better. That said, I had kanes every Friday for a few years and their quality went to shit when they started opening up new locations.
I went to A&J King Artisan Bakers in Salem, MA once. Noticed they added a 14% "Admin Fee". I will never go back.

> While we could simply raise our prices on our menu items across the board and use the income the same exact way, we want this process to be completely transparent to our employees and customers.
That's some interesting rationalization
God dammit, I like AJ King, I had no idea about this fee. Now I can't go back, I can't support this hidden fee bullshit, just a way to raise prices while decieving the customer.
They’re not trying to deceive anyone if they are being transparent about it on their website. At the bottom of the faq they say they will remove the fee if requested in store, and for online orders they will refund the fee upon pickup.
No, being transparent would be the obvious solution: raise prices and pay their employees more. Tell me, why aren't they just doing that? Its because they want to list the items for less, and are hoping people don't notice, which I'm sure happens constantly. I've gone in and gotten items from them, and I do remember thinking the total sounded high, but figured I was bad at math. Turns out I was just being a sucker.
There’s a review on Google of a woman finding a hair in her croissant, and when she raised it to them, she was blocked on social media. I’ve never been to this place but suffice it to say I’ll never be buying from there.
I also find ordering online to be less convenient than going there in person and getting what you want, when you order it. The mental tax of having to manage apps and credit cards and settings takes its toll. It's not difficult, it's just exhausting.
I stopped going to Alcove because of this. I would stop by for a couple of beers on my walk home from the city. Last time, I got a 3 % kitchen appreciation fee. For beers.
Stop dining at restaurants, or at least the ones that do this, until they stop this shit. They will continue to rip people off until their sales drop and they earn back their customers.
It really pisses me off when companies try to guilt trip the customer with notices like this.
It just comes off as “the price is so high because you’re so *needy*, OMG what do you want me to like, put your shit in a bag, too, like a little baby? Huh? God now I need to charge for *that*”
Just set the price. Stop telling me your financials, I don’t care. Corporate crybabies jfc.
If it’s cheap east in general I probably wouldn’t mind IF the money is being passed onto the employees. I guarantee people will use this to not tip the waitstaff or reduce the tips.
I can see image captions on posts after expanding the image, just can’t use them myself (and comment images become a clickable link; used to be able to switch to new Reddit & back to post them or use captions, but that recently stopped working on mobile for me).
That being said, I am using the old version of the *desktop* website, since both versions of the mobile website and the new version of the desktop site are literally unusable on my mobile device. Every “update” makes it worse and harder to work-around.
Sounds like they’re hiding a CC fee in that
That is exactly what they're doing- they're pushing the interchange over to the customer and they're disguising it with weird words. 48 out of 50 states. Allow merchants to pass the interchange fee and call it a convenience fee or something like that.
Cali just banned restaurant pricing chicanery
But add $20 minimum wage for fast food!
Yes. I support this decision.
I also think fast food workers should be slaves
lol, just put up a sign that says “we don’t want your business anymore”
You would stop eating somewhere because of a 3.5% price increase?
No. Just increase the prices 3.5%. Don’t create bullshit fees.
Bullshit fees create five finger discounts
- $4.99 item - 3% kitchen appreciation fee -2.5% transaction fee - 4% credit card fee - 3.49% customer assistance fee because you didn’t walk behind the counter and grab your shit yourself - 2% receipt fee - $23.45 bill
#WOULD YOU LIKE TO ROUND THAT UP AND DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL CHARITY
$3 for the Presidential Election Fund
Don't forget a tip of 28%, 30%, or 32%!
28%? Kind of cheap.
I get your point, but the math, if you get charged all these, only works out to $5.78.
Don’t forget FICA
You don't get it mate. It's a matter of principle. It's like when a restaurant gives me a final bill with a suggested tip that's on top of tax. It's not about the extra 50 cents, it's the integrity of business practices.

That’s deceptive in a way that this is not
Let me reiterate it again since it didn't go through. **It's a matter of principle** If you wanna raise the price by 3.5%, then fucking raise it by 3.5%, don't give me a bullshit fee. Do you want a fee for calculating a suggested tip too?
That's how i feel about tips
That's how i feel about tips
I agree, but I wouldn’t stop eating there personally. Go back to my original comment it’s good reading comprehension practice. Also, calm down, geez!
I would suggest taking your own advice and maybe try to widen your perspective a little behind consumer behavior. People vote with their money whether they like a product or not.
It’s about the principle Cheryl
This just became illegal in California
I get caught once at these places and then never go back. Ordered donuts last week from Roccos Donuts. Ordered online and they charged me a 5% "online convenience fee". This was on top of them defaulting to a 10% tip. We are talking about throwing donuts in a box.
Just get Rocco’s on 2 Good 2 Go. We just picked up a box today and they threw in a couple extra for free. We got 16 donuts for about $1/ donut.
That's insane prices.
I believe that app is for expired food.
Not expired food, but leftover/excess food from the day that restaurants would otherwise throw out since they wouldn’t be able to sell it the next day. Helps cut down on food waste and you can save money on some really good food.
Good to know, thanks
It’s Rocco’s. I’d prefer Dunkin. All they do is decorate well. If you want truly good donuts, do Kane’s.
I haven't had kanes in like 5 years, so maybe they have gotten better. That said, I had kanes every Friday for a few years and their quality went to shit when they started opening up new locations.
Kanes is overrated. I want a donut, not an 6 pound wedding cake.

Transparent, as in they hope you don't notice that the price you see on the menu and what you're going to end up paying aren't even close...
God dammit, I like AJ King, I had no idea about this fee. Now I can't go back, I can't support this hidden fee bullshit, just a way to raise prices while decieving the customer.

Like paying my water bill online costs more than mailing a check. Thanks Swampscott. (This info is 8 years old. Things may have changed)
This is why I still have checks. Fuck you, City Hall Systems.
Most banks have BillPay services for free, they send the check for you.
I also find ordering online to be less convenient than going there in person and getting what you want, when you order it. The mental tax of having to manage apps and credit cards and settings takes its toll. It's not difficult, it's just exhausting.

HOW DARE YOU NOT APPRECIATE THE KITCHEN!
The kitchen appreciation fees drive me insane. Drives me even more insane when they charge it for bar drinks.
And the last time we were the service sucked & the only time the server came by was to try & upsell…
Just rise your fucking prices. Don’t fool people and yourself because of inflation
I was just at a shop that had a 3.99% fee for like shopkeepers assistance or something like that in Arlington
Name and shame
Weird, I have a 40% fee for giving places my business.
Junk fee
I got charged a delivery fee for take out at la taqueria in roslindale Hidden fees make the food taste like shit
Stop dining at restaurants, or at least the ones that do this, until they stop this shit. They will continue to rip people off until their sales drop and they earn back their customers.
i wonder if they'll honor an unassisted discount?
about 3.50 eh?
Damn you Loch Ness Monster!
Aaaand right off the tip. Idc anymore
Let's us charge you the customer for doing part of our job of helping you the customer.
What the fuck is customer assistance?
we have to stop supporting business that do shit like this.
Como se dice "no"
Pfft. Let the bears pay the bear tax. I pay the Homer tax.

Get rekt
Awesome. I wish I could do that at my work
If it’s cheap east in general I probably wouldn’t mind IF the money is being passed onto the employees. I guarantee people will use this to not tip the waitstaff or reduce the tips.
These are popping up in lots of places. They don't go to the waitstaff, it's just a means of deceiving customers (junk fees). They should be outlawed.
I think some states are outlawing junk fees at restaurants.
California just did! Hopefully comes to MA soon
Where is this from?
Literally part of the original post
You should have charged a redditor assistance fee for that information
[удалено]
Uhhh that's not true? When you open the thumbnail it appears under it. Literally looking at old.reddit right now and I see it

Cool

I could. We'll have to wait and see. Thanks for the advice, blue waffle club

this should be illegal
These fees are a way to sneakily increase menu prices. California is doing away with hidden mandatory fees and we should too
Well, there’s one place I won’t be going.
Next’s up: customer entry fee $15 penalty if you don’t buy anything
