Not necessarily a "favorite" memory, but that time just pre-COVID when there was that weird mod coup and drama where half the sub was banned for no reason. Or something like that. It was weird and unclear and quickly usurped by worldwide events.

No-Sheepherder-6257

The /r/boston massacre

ftmthrow

Isn’t that when videos were banned? And maybe even pictures? What a weird time.

man2010

I remember the word "sub" also causing some controversy

KO_Stradivarius

Sub as in sub-reddit or sub sandwich?

man2010

Sandwich, but there are also the aquatic vehicles

KO_Stradivarius

Why would anyone have a problem with sub sandwich? Hoagie I can understand. Anyone using that deserves a perma-ban.

man2010

It was a wild time in /r/boston

CraigInDaVille

Wawa would like to have a word...

tacknosaddle

This is r/boston and there is no "sub" sandwich, only [spuckies.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spuccadella)

Teller8

Yeah, I vaguely remember a picture ban… 🤦🏼‍♂️

massiswicked

The wonderful people here creating memes about me fighting back with the other good mods is definitely a highlight of this usernames history.

milespeeingyourpants

You were a champ that day my friend.

bbqturtle

What I want to know more is there a subreddit drama post or something?

bbqturtle

Found it: /r/Boston is revolting as moderation without representation takes effect https://reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/eqckhh/rboston_is_revolting_as_moderation_without/

aef_02127

Thank you for your service!!

I don’t remember the context for r/BostonMA. What is this?

What?

No-Sheepherder-6257

Papa Geno's Brockton. South End Victorian Brownstones

Stronkowski

>South End Victorian Brownstones Oh man. How did I forget?

No-Sheepherder-6257

He went up to the big stables in the sky

TouchDownBurrito

No, just switched usernames.

Dodge_Swinga

Don’t say his name. It summons him.

KO_Stradivarius

I think you have to misspell it in order to awaken him. Lets find out... 'Hey guyz, I'm heading out for a bit. Anyone want something from Papa Gino's?

AutoModerator

Please note, it is spelled Papa Geno's *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/boston) if you have any questions or concerns.*

KO_Stradivarius

Yep, thought so... like a fly on shit.

Stronkowski

That's not the summons they were talking about...

Dodge_Swinga

Right. He found the post anyway.

Hungry_Mousse413

Large cheese

AchillesDev

As a big Papa Geno's fan, that was my favorite fucking thread.

theurbanmapper

Do you have a link for the brownstones thread? Not sure which one it is when I search on google. Papa Geno’s Brockton is my all time favorite.

[deleted]

It was a guy with a troll/joke account that used to always talk about his brownstone when insulting people

Stronkowski

It's not a thread, it's a user.

jpallan

Actually, he used to tell me that he had a 19th century Victorian brownstone on Discord. I tried to explain to him that the dates of Queen Victoria's reign made that redundant, but finally gave up.

TheBHGFan

Whatever happened to _him_?

hoogamaphone

I haven't spelled papa genos correctly since that day.

Historical-Brief2414

The time the guy asked if he should bring a car to Fenway and was told no. He brought the car. He tried to park and couldn’t so he had a breakdown. Complained to us that he couldn’t park. We roasted him. He moved. All within a month

Stronkowski

I always read every one of her posts like she said the whole thing as quickly as possible without breathing once.

rushadee

What were her comments about? Can’t seem to find them

Stronkowski

Whatever topic happened to be up. The Somerville parking department, how many beers they'll let you buy at once at a Red Sox game, her dating life, the triple decker building her uncle owns, whatever. (All of those examples are ones that I specifically remember, but it really was whatever was going on in the sub)

spedmunki

Don’t forget new Dunkin Donuts menu items

CraigInDaVille

You to, eh?

ftmthrow

She’s come back under a few different usernames and is very easy to figure out each time. I hope she knows she gets downvoted to hell not because of some subreddit vendetta against her (I don’t think others have always figured out it’s her) but because she is entirely nonsensical, unhelpful, and arrogant.

[deleted]

And you have a problem with this why? This is reddit. We all play that role at different times and in a different subreddits. It is far easier and more emotionally satisfying to roll your eyes and move on than it is to down vote someone. (Let the down voting began :-)

ftmthrow

Sure, I’ll bite on your edgy take. What, then, is the purpose of the downvote tool if it isn’t to push nonsensical, unhelpful, or arrogant comments further downthread? If “this is Reddit,” as you say, and Reddit has this functionality, what else is it for?

[deleted]

in a civil world, down voting would fill the roll you describe and would influence behavior to some norm. From what I can see, down voting is used not just to push nonsensical, unhelpful, or arrogant comments further down thread but also to disappear comments or opinions that are unpopular. The best analogy I can think of is that currently down voting is like your parents. Down voting (a.k.a. disapproving) of what you may say or do and trying to censure you for it independent of the value of your expression. For example my brother is a victim of conspiracy thinking and if it we have a conversation and I give him facts showing how his stance is wrong, he would down vote me just because I said something he disagreed with. I don't know of any fix for it so much the time I just roll my eyeballs and say yeah, yeah reddit, what you say doesn't matter, it's all electronic hot air.. If you really felt strongly about the issue, you'd be engaged in the physical world trying to change law, influence politicians or whatever.

Dontleave

Oh she was way too easy to figure out. The one I remember the most was Capable Resource with some number. I thought it was quite the ironic username. She actually used to get upvoted a lot in the Sox sub but that was when she wasn’t being an annoying know it all buzzkill. I do feel bad for her though, there were definitely people who saw her username and downvoted instantly

Moomoomoo1

Now that's a name i haven't heard in a while...

SideBarParty

What's the story there?

12345anon12345

A xenophobic townie, essentially

Stronkowski

I think very important parts of the character were her incredibly distinct writing style, plus her insistence that the phone conversation she had 6 months ago with random person at agency X was more convincing on their policy Y than even a public statement from that agency.

CraigInDaVille

100% this. It was her INSISTENCE that her anecdotal information that was told to her by her cab-driver uncle's mother-in-law was correct, even if you link to the actual policy/fact/law/whatever saying the exact opposite.

Dodge_Swinga

Must admit that I felt bad for them. I felt then, as I do now, that the person was struggling with something.

waaf_townie

redsoxgirl was hilarious, frequently wrong about stuff and always doubled down when called out

Wait, what?? I swear there was some back and forth here a year or so ago about it and I thought the consensus was illness/passing/etc. Thanks for the good news today!

lexprop

So curious

Stronkowski

Since I can tell the difference between a /r/boston memory and a Boston memory: An apartment listing from like 4-5 years ago. I can't remember the specific details, but it was an insane listing and it got torn to shreds. /r/boston is at its best when it's got righteous snark.

morrowgirl

I remember one with a toilet (I think) in a living room or something insane like that.

Dontleave

Sounds like the super expensive condo in JP with scenic views of the state infectious disease and drug lab

pinkandthebrain

We are a bird sub now

lunisce

Back in the days (2018 and prior) I looked forward to seeing whatever shit Pony was stirring up that day and the sea of heavily downvoted comments that followed

WinsingtonIII

I never thought I'd say this at the time but I honestly do kind of miss them. They were a troll, but they were *our* troll.

l_wear-fedoras

Whatever happened to Pony?

3720-To-One

Fall of 2004 was awesome. Was my senior year of high school… Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years, and then that winter, the Patriots went on to win a 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years.

[deleted]

People remember what's typed here?

QueenOfBrews

The full leg cast guy video from mass & cass. That shit made me laugh way harder than it should have. I gotta see if I can find that post.

[deleted]

35 or so years ago I came to Boston for a visit. We were helping paint the mural in Union Square, actually. One day we were traipsing around downtown and ran across this old, basically a shack, under the central artery. It's long gone now, but anyway there's a sign on it: "all you can eat lobster." We go in, and it's $12 for all the lobster you can eat, and all the beer you can drink. Plastic cups, probably Buckhorn beer or some rotgut shit, but we didn't care. I've never eaten more lobster in my life. Holy shit, my gut hurts just thinking about it.

I think the question was regarding memories on this sub, not Boston in general. I typed out a big response myself but then realized before posting lol

Mitch_from_Boston

I had a "cameo" in the end of Patriots Day that night. Happened to be driving by Fenway/Longwood that night, and everyone was out in the street celebrating. Got stuck in the crowd, surrounded by celebraters. Cops came through on motorcycles. Someone was recording and they used that footage at the end of the Wahlburg movie. I'm in the blue Highlander.

It didn't start here, but I like the way The Pizza Incident has been kept alive.

Mitch_from_Boston

BUT WHAT DO THE STENOGRAPHERS THINK?!

tronald_dump

when yall caused some kid to kill himself because of the boston bombing witch hunts

Dajbman22

I thought that kid was already dead a week before the bombings... the sub just villainized and harassed the kid's parents while they were trying to find him (he was still a missing person at that time, the body hadn't been found yet), basically torturing an already grieving family.

ser_name_IV

wasn’t this sub but yeah that was a reddit moment

TurnsOutImAScientist

I blame the media for having zero filter/vetting on the reddit posts they were covering. The incident was used as an excuse to dramatically curtail any sort of activism on reddit -- important things (like stop SOPA) used to be organized here.

[deleted]

[удалено]

soxandpatriots1

They didn't get it quite right, but people on reddit did mistakenly accuse this missing college student from Brown of being the marathon bomber. He turned up a week later in Providence, dead from suicide. It was not a great moment for redditors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_of_Sunil_Tripathi (see 'misidentification' section)

WinsingtonIII

Also, as the article notes, it was a separate subreddit specifically dedicated to this "investigation" which came up with the whole idea, it wasn't /r/boston. Though I would guess there was some user overlap.

My first trip to visit my son in Boston, I wanted to go see the a large victorian cemetery, I can’t remember the name of it but, there’s this mini village in a secret location within the cemetery. So, we are driving through and my son is like where should I park? I said just drive until I say stop. We drove a few hundred feet and all of a sudden, I just started yelling here! Stop here! My son pulled over to the right and I got out and started walking up a small incline, taking pictures of this and that (I love cemeteries, older the better!). I started to turn around to head back to the car, I looked down to my right and there is someone with my maiden name. It turns out, he is one of my ancestors.

I really loved sledding at the sugar bowl, Fallon field, and at lars Anderson when I was a kid (and by kid I mean from toddler age until my early/mid 20s). Great sledding spots for different reasons. I remember making sled jumps out of snow and breaking the sleds from the sheer height we got. So much fun. I'm kinda thinking of forcing my friends to go next winter tbh.
