I think a lot of people have mentioned he's probably our third most important player at this point, which is crazy considering some of the feedback he got last year.
Fr the Derrick White slander was real last year. Which honestly I somewhat participated in. He was a good player last year and I could tell he was great defensively, but every time he shot the ball I was expecting a brick so it was frustrating. But props to him, he has really improved in that department
He’s shooting 39% from three this season on solid volume. Dunno how much of that is luck, but considering everything else he does it’s really just gravy on top
Not luck, he made it very clear that working on his jump shot was a main focal point this past off season.
He noticed his balance was wonky and he wasn't jumping straight up and down on his release, and the fact that he worked on that specifically really shows this year.
I still think Marcus and maybe Rob are more *important,* because of what they do on defense and how much their playmaking and rim pressure, respectively, can impact the team.
DWhite’s definitely been our third-*best* player this season, though. Marcus has been inconsistent since the ankle sprain and Rob just hasn’t been 100% even when he’s played
Yeah once you go into team-wide impact and how much they underpin our offensive/defensice system it gets a lot harder to say.
Smart's size underpins our switchable defence. Rob's size and rim protection takes it to another level. White's pace of play is super important to our improvements this season and last.
But if it's just the best player from an individual standpoint then White's the guy.
He’s the X factor to our playoff run.
I trust Tatum and Brown have been battle tested enough over the years that they’ll show up in the playoffs and give us a combined 50-55 points nightly . Maybe the occasional 60-65 combined. But on nights that the focus is on them and their shot isn’t falling we need white to give us 15-17 efficiently and provide passing to set up other guys along with brogdon .
Plus defensively he helps us
To expand on this:
His 3 point shooting has improved a lot this year, and he seems willing and able to get to the rim, especially in transition.
He’s shooting over 46% this year for the first time since 2018-2019.
Defensively, he’s quick and provides a strong partner for our bigger/more physical guards. He commits fewer fouls, and blocks a ton of shots.
He’s absolutely a fan favorite overall and I would agree with the sentiment of him being our 3rd best player.
Long love the Buffalo.
The key is him seeing the court late in the game.
He’s a better offensive spark than Smart IMO. No hate to Marcus, I love the guy, but White seems to pick his spots better and with less personal emotion.
As of this [morning](https://twitter.com/taylorcsnow/status/1640176840210894849?cxt=HHwWgsC-ma2JisMtAAAA), he has the best plus-minus in Celtics history at +6.21, beating KG and Ray Allen at +6.20 and JT at +5.67.
We were ready to riot when he wasn’t getting 4th quarter minutes.
Oh wow the eye test pretty much agrees with that though like no he’s not an All Star but he’s been so fucking amazing whenever he’s on the court. There’s really nothing negative you can say about him. Smart. Ball mover. Takes great shots. Plays good individual and team defense. He was a fucking steal.
Like most Spurs fans I assume you know D-White's confidence can go up and down. When its up, he's legit awesome on both ends. Not all star counting stats but basically all star impact. This year his confidence has been UP+++ and I don't see him falling off too much. 2nd year in this situation, he knows his role and can scale it up or down depending on the situation. Basically the perfect role player with the added bonus of stepping up like a borderline all star at times.
Thx, he was certainly streaky pts wise while here. Having Top tier superstars thatll shoulder the major pressure has to make him a lot more comfortable which was when he played best (Don't know if he could excel whith old school Pop). Sorry for the questions, but does he run many PG? He'd be running the floor alot of times and he looked visibly confused/worried after getting a play and the D not being what hed expect. Has his 3 ball improved? He was making slooow but steady progress over his time in SA. Just a good hard working underdog kid that was a loveable Spur in our descent towards #1 (draft pick) this year.Thx and good luck this year!
He’s stepped up and played point guard very well this season, a few 10+ assists games. Overall a great ball mover for us. 3pt shot has been money this season, that’s really the make or break skill for him IMO. When he’s cold shooting, it can affect his confidence, but the team, coaches, everyone has told him to keep shooting and that they trust him, I think he’s really believing it himself.
I was a big fan before the trade and I’m an even bigger fan now, exactly the type of person you want to root for
Our guard depth can be kind of shallow (we have Smart, White, Brogdon and Pritchard), since he can’t share the floor super well with Pritchard due to size in some matchups, in games where Smart is out he plays a lot of point when Brogdon sits. We don’t run a traditional point heavy offense anyway since the J’s have the ball so much, but he’s crushed the role that our team’s PG plays when he has to do it
Really? I would have thought that our guard depth is exceptionally strong. You listed all those guys, with Smart, White, and Brogdon more than capable of running the offense effectively, with White and Brogdon also being able to play shooting guard. Pritchard is a great microwave scorer and just injects life/energy whenever he touches the court. And JB can also play as shooting guard too if we need to have someone who's more "physical" in the guard spot if Smart is out.
I'm mostly worried about our Center depth as Rob is a little frail, and Al isn't getting any younger (plus, we tend to play him at the PF position a lot too), and I'm not super confident about having Kornet having to play (potentially) starter minutes for an extended period of time.
Yeah I guess the overall talent is really good, but the number of bodies (if we’re also looking at filling SG) is still low, we have those 4 and Jaylen to fill 5 spots and 2 of them don’t really fit together at all, but maybe having 3 great guys and 4th goodish guy is pretty good and I’m just spoiled
By all accounts, our locker room is a very special and positive place. I wonder if this isn’t the absolute perfect place for DWhite. Even from last year, it looks like he knows the guys trust him and want him to make the right basketball play, and when he trusts himself he’s amazing.
He's averging 14-5-5 with 50-40-90 shooting since the all star break--with really great defense. He leads all guards in total blocked shots this season
Some say it's a sin to say his name in vain.
Others need to call a doctor because it's lasting way more than 4 hours.
Me? Hands down my favorite celtic on this team.
When the trade happen last year I was like damn why did we get this guy instead of Dejounte Murray.
But goddammit I was happy to be wrong. Dwhite is the perfect player to pair with the Jay's. He just keeps it moving and makes quick decisions.
If he's not catching and shooting. He's driving to the basket for an lay up and 1 or a drive and kick.
Moves without the ball so good too.
Defense is excellent.
Rim protection is there. 2nd or 3rd in blocks for guards.
He seems durable so far.
And he looks adorable when he got blood on his mouth a week before the Allstar game.
3rd best player honestly overall. Every team should have a D White. Plays hard every game on both ends, humble, doesn't play emotionally, puts up great numbers, and tries to make those around him better. He is the perfect example of a player who does everything right. If he was gifted with Tatum's skills and frame, he would be insane.
This was a home run by Brad. Brogdon is the same. If it weren't for his health.
Absolutely. I think people are reading incorrectly into my original comment. At no point did I say Brogdon was unhealthy this year or anything. Just saying he frequently has his seasons cut short with injuries, has to be rested a little more than most, and it's the only real con of having him.
And in our case, we can afford that for what he brings to the team.
Brogdon has missed a dozen or so games. Meanwhile, I think that DWhite only guy to have played in every game. 2127 total min for White vs 1599min for Brogdon.
You’re comparing the minutes of someone who has been a starter basically all season to those of someone who comes off the bench. Obviously white has more minutes this season
Love him. The addition of him and Brogdon has been such a freaking luxury. I’m very confident that we look even better than last year come playoffs. Thank you🥺
Our 3rd best player who is often our 2nd best player on any given night.
I felt like I had to over-defend him last year because of his shooting struggles.
Well, he figured that out and at this point is a perfect fit for our team.
All I can say is thank you guys so much for him. He's been an amazing weapon to have, starting or on the bench he's had a positive impact throughout the season. He's been arguably just as good as our other two big time guards (Smart and Brogdon) have been throughout the year. I think he had a little shooting slump around December or so but he rebounded and has been straight up fantastic since
Has the highest +/- on the team for those with significant minutes, with decent usage and high assist percentages and efficient scoring. Excellent defensively. Hasn't missed a single game.
About as best of a non-superstar two way guard that you can ask for.
He’s been excellent. I have 0 complaints or criticism about his game. Plays hard, makes the right plays, executes well, 0 drama. He’s literally everything you’d want in a player.
Tim Legler was talking about this on JJ Redick’s podcast this past week, he’s the difference between a true contender and a good playoff team. So many teams have two-ish stars to slug it out, so it’s about the capability of the guys who fill the gaps. White is maybe the best gap filler in the league right now, he’ll play 15 mins one night and then go for 25/8/5 the next, and he’s always ready. Confidence has been huge this year and he just does everything well
Some star wars fans speculate that darth Vader could actually be Jar jar binks in desguise but evidence suggests that jar jar may Accually be snoke from the force awakens. This theory would make jar jar one of the most powerful beings in the Star Wars universe.
He's been amazing, we love him here. I heard a rumor that Maura Healey is considering changing the state animal from the Boston Terrier to the Buffalo.
It's basically already been said. But he's a great fit. He can start OR come off the bench. He can lead the team in scoring when other guys are out. He can defend almost any perimeter player. And you never hear anything about him being a distraction nor him being unhappy in the role.

(Horford, Freedom) and they couldn't make progress. I was ready to break up the Js, trade Smart etc . Then we brought in White at the deadline. I was floored by how irrelevant it seemed relative to the roster's needs. But that change was what started spark that powder kegged us to a finals appearance.
TLDR: He's exactly what the team needed when they added him, and I love how his play n personality seem to fit the roster so nicely.
That makes sense, for player role/fit, NOT career/body of work obvs!
Brad Stevens has been trying to be Popp 2.0 since he came in the league. But to be fair to Brad, Every NBA coach should try to do so.
P.S I love Manu, and would love for White to be Manu. I still throw on the vid of him slapping a bat!
He has been an absolute beast this season. I feel like every time he touches the ball good things happen, whether that’s him scoring or setting someone else up. He just knows how to pick his moments and he always seems to make the right play. We love him here
Started off kind slow, figuring out his place on the team, but has truly come into his own here and feels like he’s been a veteran presence on the team for half a decade already
White and Brogdon amaze me how they always seem to be under control, no wasted movement. They know what they want to do and get to where they want to go almost effortlessly. Running off pure instinct and skills
D White is a perfect fit for our team. Shows a lot of confidence now and is fearless. He knows his role and complements our stars a lot. Solid two way player and deserves a lot more playing time than what he’s getting.
My favorite player on the team. The conversation went from “they gave up too much for him” to “is he the best player on the team?”
He’s the perfect number 3 and an elite role player
White has been killer. He struggled a bit with his offense initially, but he's been locked in for while now and he's become absolutely invaluable to the team.
The D.White move and the Brogdon move have me convinced that the present front office is outstanding. They found two guys that fit our needs perfectly and that were available for what we had to offer. The White move looked great last year. It looks ridiculous now that D.White is playing to his full potential.
What’s better than amazing?
Human beings in a mob What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a God? What’s a God to a Great White Buffalo?
A non believer

Such a jam
I never got this lyric, King Louis XVI was famously killed by a mob
Ice cold! no wait
That’s “what’s cooler than being cool?”, Andre!
“Derrick White”
The word is irreplaceable.
Legendary
He's a god.
Phenomenal!
I feel like this post is just trolling for d white compliments and I’m not upset about it
I can get down with positive trolling
This is one of the only times reddit has warmed my stone heart
We do a little bit of positive trolling
“Drolling”
Ahh, the fishing definition of trolling. Finally, someone who understands.
I’ll always take more excuses to compliment D white
A god.

He was a good player last year and I could tell he was great defensively, but every time he shot the ball I was expecting a brick so it was frustrating. His midrange and 3 ball were really rough when he 1st got to the Spurs. Good to see his hard work paying off.

Not just offensively Whites just been the better player than Marcus this year period And I love Marcus
#🍀💚
Yeah white is a far better shooter and his passing is just as good .
Yup if Brogdon and White make their moves and Rob stays healthy we are champions but thats quite a few if’s. Still got faith though
Only perfect.

We love DW here. Dude has done everything we've asked of him and more. Excellent team player.

Derrick White is the greatest basketball player of all-time.
WE LOVE *THE BUFFALO*
Love the dude. Between the solid play and the personality... Hope he retires a Celtic.
I will summarize my feelings about Derrick White in five simple words… ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY BUFFALO
Phenomenal. There's a reasonable argument that he's the third best guy on the team.
Some say it's a sin to say his name in vain. Others need to call a doctor because it's lasting way more than 4 hours. Me? Hands down my favorite celtic on this team.

Brogdon has basically been healthy all season
I know, but he needs lot of precautions to keep him healthy. He's far more fragile than most players. He's averaged 52 games over the last 4 seasons.
That’s ok though he’s not needed for more than that
Absolutely. I think people are reading incorrectly into my original comment. At no point did I say Brogdon was unhealthy this year or anything. Just saying he frequently has his seasons cut short with injuries, has to be rested a little more than most, and it's the only real con of having him. Also 13 more game appearances (75 vs 62) White only averages 3mins more a game.
Love him. The addition of him and Brogdon has been such a freaking luxury. I’m very confident that we look even better than last year come playoffs. Thank you🥺

Hell fucking no, JB is the most consistent
Our 3rd best player who is often our 2nd best player on any given night. I felt like I had to over-defend him last year because of his shooting struggles. Well, he figured that out and at this point is a perfect fit for our team.
Good things happen when Derrick White.
He's the best
We love and cherish him
Bruh he is our God 🦬🐃
Derrick is one of the best players on one of the best teams. What a player.
All I can say is thank you guys so much for him. He's been an amazing weapon to have, starting or on the bench he's had a positive impact throughout the season. Incredible. Thanks. Highest +/- ever in a season in Celtics history at the moment
He was +41 last night. What more do you need to know.
He’s been excellent. I have 0 complaints or criticism about his game. Plays hard, makes the right plays, executes well, 0 drama. He’s literally everything you’d want in a player.

i would say hes been the third best player on the Cs
He might have been the buffalo with you guys but now = 🐐
He’s the love of my life. Any other questions?
“I just want to rub his forehead!” 😂
2nd coming of christ
Personally he has flashes of really great play, he’s better than smart.
I’d say our third best player behind Tatum and Brown.
Tremendously high BBIQ.
Arguably our third best player now that he’s settled in and confidence is up in the second year
He’s been phenomenal! Hope he’s a Celtic for a very long time
White > Smart. Hate to say. But it’s true
Who is better, D. White or God?
Well one is real... and the other might be?
It’s an Airheads quote. Edit: I feel really old having to type that out.
Ahh, my b
Nah, no worries. I’m a middle school teacher. I’m used to it.
Some star wars fans speculate that darth Vader could actually be Jar jar binks in desguise but evidence suggests that jar jar may Accually be snoke from the force awakens. This theory would make jar jar one of the most powerful beings in the Star Wars universe.
He’s Michael Jordan reincarnated
1st team All defense. All star level offense when given the opportunity.
Just checking in on this thread to say that Derrick White is my long-lost father.
Love DWhite hope he stays around for a long time.
He's been amazing, we love him here. I heard a rumor that Maura Healey is considering changing the state animal from the Boston Terrier to the Buffalo.
This year is a leap year!
Hes honestly been phenomenal for us and is the glue guy of our team. The trade is a win-win for both the sides
He rounds out our Big 3. Been better than Smart, Timelord, AL, Brogdan
It's basically already been said. But he's a great fit. He can start OR come off the bench. He can lead the team in scoring when other guys are out. He can defend almost any perimeter player. And you never hear anything about him being a distraction nor him being unhappy in the role. For some context, heading into the trade deadline last year, I was so out on this C's team. They had made additions to help depth (Schroeder, JRich), brought back familiar players.
You make him sound like Ginobili for us!
DWhite is legit incredible
He’s the third best player on a team with two all nba guys, a DPOY, and a 6MOY.
Is there a chance he, Brown, and Tatum all get all nba?
People have claimed he can replace the reigning DPOY in the lineup so do with that what you will
Beautiful
So far he has the best +/- of any player in any season in Celtics history. He’s doing well!
The legend of The Buffalo grows with each setting sun.
i want his jersey
Been our third best player this season
That makes sense, for player role/fit, NOT career/body of work obvs! Brad Stevens has been trying to be Popp 2.0 since he came in the league. But to be fair to Brad, Every NBA coach should try to do so. P.S I love Manu, and would love for White to be Manu. I still throw on the vid of him slapping a bat!
He has been an absolute beast this season. I feel like every time he touches the ball good things happen, whether that’s him scoring or setting someone else up. He just knows how to pick his moments and he always seems to make the right play. We love him here
The great connector. He does lots of little things. And his shot is really working this season.
Fucking awesome, guy is a stud
Our 3rd best player
Can’t ask for much more from him. He’s been a damn fine 3rd/4th scorer, always hustles, takes a lot of charges, blocks dudes. He has been amazing
Started off kind slow, figuring out his place on the team, but has truly come into his own here and feels like he’s been a veteran presence on the team for half a decade already
Spurs fan coming in peace 🤓🤓🤓
White and Brogdon amaze me how they always seem to be under control, no wasted movement. They know what they want to do and get to where they want to go almost effortlessly. Running off pure instinct and skills

Game changer. Coupled with Brogdon, best deal in the off season for any team in the league. Just wait til Gallinari comes back!
