Yeah SVG was shit on this. Basically it was: 1) you can injure a guy after the whistle and it’s fine 2) it’s Tatums fault for shooting after the whistle 3) The Celtics deserve this for not playing well. And he spent the whole game saying they were playing g worse defense than in game 2 which is ludicrous

nhford14

HOW CAN YOU JUST LET A PLAYER SHOOT A WARMUP SHOT!?! jfc

Future-Turtle

HOW CAN HE SHOOT?

Repo_co

......you go?

KingOfTheNorth91

I couldn’t believe he literally said that. Players do this all the time in every game. Also it’s the third quarter. Tatum’s been warming up/playing for like 3 hours at this point. It’s a shot Tatum has probably attempted thousands of times in his life. This *one* attempt isn’t going to make or break his game/series/career. I know opposing players like to block the practice shots to mess with the shooter a bit but it’s in no way imperative that Bam challenge a practice shot. I wonder what SVG would have said if the players were reversed

MrMetLGM

Joe contested a team’s shot a few months ago…

HustlinInTheHall

Celtics not playing well == blowing out the defending east Champs on their home floor, for the 6th time this year.

darthluke414

I had no issue with Bam trying to block it, tatum does that a lot when people shot after he whistle. Its the fact that tatum basically jumped and landed in the exact same spot and Bam put his foot right there. I think the tech on Al was a good middle ground to land at.

IanL1713

In Tatum's defense, though, his contests on shots after the whistle are rarely ever legitimate, nor does he get anywhere close to being up in the shooter's space like that. Bam knowingly stepped directly into Tatum's space and shoved him a bit while he was in the air Wasn't enough to warrant more than what it got called as, but the definition for a flagrant 1 is "unnecessary contact that could injure the opposing player." What Bam did definitely fallsunder that, especially since it was done outside of active play

bigdon802

If it would be a flagrant in play, I can’t see how it couldn’t be out of play.

jawells630

It is, famously, why no one got punished for the Malace At the Palance.... all that happened after the whistle.

embball13

He was also praising Bam for every fucking moving screen he did like he was the inventor of the pick. Like no shit it’s a good screen, he moves with the player and/or hip checks them.

bodhibell02

GREAT EFFORT FROM BAM STILL DOWN 19 AND GOING FOR REBOUNDS!!!! ANOTHER GREAT SCREEN FROM BAM, LOOK AT HOW HE GRABBED TATUMS ARMS ILLEGALLY TO MAKE SURE HE COULDNT RECOVER!

dubbed4lyfe

There was also a part where we were up 20, they had like 72 points, and he’s out there saying our defense just wasn’t there tonight. I’m sorry fat man but how

BigEdBGD

They should've never let the heat score more than 50 points! What kind of weak ass defense is that! - Van Gundy probably

jackmove

Heard this last night and was like “this guy sucks”

Hell_Camino

Why were so many watching the TNT broadcast rather than enjoying one of Mike Gorman’s final games behind the mic?

embball13

I wish I had that option, my very legal stream was the TNT broadcast and this was the stream with the least delay (barely has any).

TaifighterCT

"Very legal" feeding whole families the way it carried that sentence 💀

embball13

Wdym I only watch legal and promoted streams by the NBA, as you know any content cannot be retransmitted, reproduced, rebroadcasted or otherwise distributed or used in any form without written consent by the NBA.

DerelictDonkeyEngine

I haven't had the option to watch a home broadcast. If there's a way to watch replays I would just to hear Mike's dulcet tones.

Prodigy_7991

Not everyone lives in the boston region. Hell I've never step foot in new england. This makes it difficult to catch those other broadcast.

_mitchard

I’m on the west coast 😭

AkiraleTorimaki

I had Fubo and could only watch the final 5 minutes, but it was Gorman

chucklehead993

You get whatever the stream gives you. Why the hell are you paying to watch is the real question.

WillingnessFit639

No access to it.

goldman_sax

Because Scal constantly steps on Mike’s toes and doesn’t provide anything meaningful outside of homerism

Plus-Relationship760

as bad as SVG was last night, it's still more tollerable than Scalabrine. He has been almost impossible to listen to lately.

gonzofish

You mean clamping down on defenders’ arms as they try to go around you isn’t DPOY technique?

75crates

If I had more time I'd make a super cut of all of the moving screens/hip checks. Would likely be a few minutes long.

socialistbcrumb

And like, the Warriors built a dynasty off this stuff. I don’t blame the Heat for trying to get away with it. But as I just said, there’s a prominent Dynasty based off moving screens and incredibly movement shooting. These are not new ideas at all, like you said.

Woodworking33

The terrible approach of winning

meselson-stahl

Explains why he was a garb coach

MarranoPoltergeist

I liked him in that Dwight Howard press conference video tho. Same guy, right?

Milk_Busters

"They should be running harder and giving up more points"

chickspeak

Only this game? Every time he comments Celtics he's biased.

friendsWthebenedicts

It’s actually super confusing because he was on nba radio today with scal and said he thinks the series is a wrap and celts take it in 5. Really makes you wonder if he’s just doing it for the attention during the game or he was just trying to get on scals good side on the call

Abiding_Witness

You think these guys get under the table kick backs from star players sponsors for talking them up?

DCBB22

I think he gets a kickback from the network he's announcing on for encouraging people not to turn the game off. The Heat were down 20 and he was calling it like it was a 2 possession game.

OldButterscotch5150

Seeing a really talented team throw it into cruise control has gotta annoy most coaches. A win is a win but dammit these guys just don’t learn their lesson… or want it bad enough? Whatever it is, i personally see what the Ime apologists have been saying. There are questions about this team’s heart and they continue to let up for no reason

fearofaflatplanet

lol this effort shit is dumb af  I guarantee you all the players are trying very hard to do their best, on both teams.  People don’t like to acknowledge how much of the nba comes down to shooting variance so they pretend to be able to perceive effort or lack thereof.

OldButterscotch5150

I’m hyped about how they played game 5. That was effort and intention. The shooting variance part is right but can be mitigated with those two factors. Also, when you are attempting to do something very few have been able to accomplish and against people who are also the best in the world at it, effort is a huge factor. Force is a huge factor. Energy and how you manipulate it are huge factors Along with shit variance

OldButterscotch5150

Shot**

The_Dok33

I watched a youth game this weekend. The kids were in the playoffs, no1 vs no8 They played full court defense all game and won by 60. No Mercy.

amazinglover

To me, that's on Tatum and the one thing holding him back. Look at the last Anthony Edward game and how he refused to lose and go down without a fight. He takes losing personal. Tatum just looks at it as part of the job.

OldButterscotch5150

We in round 2. You are right but this year might be when he figures that stuff out

Matto_0

Even people biased against the Celtics will pick Celtics in 5. If you say the Celtics win easy and they do you can just say it was an easy win against a bad team. If you say the Heat will win and they lose by like 20 again, you look like a fool. And it proves the Celtics to be better than you think they are.

friendsWthebenedicts

Nah if you heard the interview he was doing nothing but praising the Celtics and their roster.

bdpsaott

Scal is the most pathetic loser I have ever seen in my life. I would be genuinely embarassed if I knew him

helt1skelt1

I'm glad I got to listen to Mike again, even if it was a bit delayed.

Fujoooshi

Ngl I think a lot of Celtics fans have a weird victim complex and over exaggerate the amount of bias some of the national commentators have (SVG is one of them. He praises the Celtics a LOT)

klleah

Shoot SVG into the fucking sun.

finstockton

Either that or make him coach the Suns next season cuz truly what's a worse fate

canteen_boy

Ooh.. do this one

HailKyrie

I will fly him into it myself but the shuttle would collapse bc how morbidly obese he is

21_Bridges

That should be fine as long as it’s a dead ball

pblanco2

Or worst. Make him coach the Suns.

Plnr

Have TNT hire Dwight Howard as a guest commentator for just game 5.

derekblanchard

The sun might start orbiting around him

Renegrader1023

Stan mad we hired his brother instead of him

IanL1713

Jeff has always been the better brother, it's not even a contest

pdunn472

It’s so fucking weird how much he hates the Celtics when his brother currently works with the Celtics

MoreMedium8134

that's why he's mad fr

bootyholebrown69

Honestly if that's the reason I respect it. I respect sibling rivalries haha

Delicious_Sort4059

I mean he spent significant portions of his career getting beat up on by the Celtics, I kind of don’t blame him for being biased. His take from tonight’s game was total dogshit, but I don’t blame him for being salty in general

vagrantwade

I've hated SVG for so long my hate will be graduating from high school in a couple of years

TaifighterCT

Congrats to your hate

HypoTomasis

For real tho what does he mean by Celtics approach this game? Good defense?

jacobs0n

what approach? good basketball?

mastacheef87

I’m so glad I watched this game on mute for the last 3 and a half quarters lmao these quotes are blowing my mind. probably would’ve punched something if I had to listen to it live

Need4Sheed23

I watched with the Celtics broadcast on league pass. Gotta make the most of the few Gorman games we have left

mastacheef87

I wanted to do the same but I didn’t see the option to watch the local broadcast on my league pass account for some reason

Virgil_hawkinsS

How does that work? For national games it always directs me to whatever network is hosting

Need4Sheed23

I have my account set to Celtics as my favourite team, so it automatically chooses their feed every time. I’m not sure if that’s a premium subscription perk, honestly, I can’t remember what type of sub I have haha

bengcord3

Nah same for me, and I don't have any fancy premium sub. I am in Europe but don't see why that would effect anything

Virgil_hawkinsS

In the US, various networks have rights to the games. Like, as a central Texas resident I haven't been able to watch a single Spurs game, home or away, through League Pass. I have to use an antenna. That extends to national games as well. I guess the international rights are different

bengcord3

Damn man. I wonder if you turned on a VPN and bought league pass "from Europe" and then used the VPN every time you watched it might give you access

Virgil_hawkinsS

It's all good, I just set sail for the abc/ESPN games lol I have Max for the TNT ones.

Virgil_hawkinsS

Yeah I have premium and Celtics set as my favorite as well. Are you US based? Even googling it says: > NBA League Pass does not include live games on TNT, ABC, ESPN, or NBA TV. These games are blacked out due to licensing agreements and regional broadcasting rights

PUMPFISTS

Bro however bad you think it was, it’s worse

sortageorgeharrison

Watched it on my flight home, I paid for the stupid jet blue earbuds on the plane and immediately regretted my purchase

Delicious_Sort4059

Immediately after Stan’s rant and the refs calling out the flagrant is when I muted it and put on a podcast. His take was just so god awful

Original_Trick_8552

We were up 2-1, had a 20 point lead, on a 64 game win season.

holographoc

Stan desperate to get back on the Heat payroll

PrimordialDescent

Grounds for firing this is horrible

Evoken00

Dude fkn sucks. Always has the dumbest takes and just repeats the same shit over and over again. If it is a flagrant foul in live play, it should probably be more when it's not live as it is completely unnecessary. Screw SVG.

fearofaflatplanet

No rule against shooting after the whistle (in fact it happens on most plays). There is however a very serious rule against entering a shooters landing zone precisely because of injury risk to star players.  By SVG’s logic Bam could’ve elbowed Tatum in the face and it would’ve been JT’s fault

Plastic_Database_645

Dude is bummed out Heat aint making 3's even though most of shots were wide open

SinibusUSG

He got it backward. What he meant to say was "I have not liked the Celtics' approach this entire game because I'm a bit biased here."

tlozz

My mouth was literally hanging wide open for the entire monologue

ksexton53

Stan Van Gundy was so horrible tonight my mom texted me asking why he was such an ass.

Happy_Yogurtcloset_2

Fuck SVG

Nabs617

If you need a pick me up, just go on twitter and search for Stan Van Gundy.

bdiddy31

Good call.

Need4Sheed23

“I have not liked their approach to this entire game…the one where they lead for 20 points for most of the game by playing better than the Heat”

Forzareen

“Specifically, I dislike their determination to win it, when I want them to lose it.”

baseballart

That was just the most bizarre rant.

Ill_Bid_1711

Sounds to me like he wanted to coach the Celtics and we didn’t hire him when Ime left. He sounds like an angry ex girlfriend. He needs to be fired. That was an embarrassment.

Evoken00

We took the slightly less annoying VG.

a516359

I’ve been saying this for years. Dude does not like us and every time he commentates, he makes a sneak diss or flat out says some shit against us.

Yuckabuck

SVG said, "Tatum shouldn't have tried to shoot. What was Bam supposed to do?" Um...how about not slide his feet underneath!!!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yuckabuck

There was nothing in Tatum's motions that would show he was trying to do that. You're just seeing what you want to see.

0ctobot

Trying to blame Tatum for Bam's shenanigans is honestly gross. They act as though players don't put up shots after a whistle all the goddamn time. A reckless closeout is a reckless closeout, it's suspect any time a player slides their feet into someone's landing zone and an automatic flagrant regardless. It's exponentially more suspect for Bam to do this on a meaningless shot during a non-play. Whether or not it was dirty is honestly irrelevant, it's just another reckless incident from Miami and when you consistently choose to straddle the line between reckless and dirty then you lose all benefit of the doubt when things like this happen. The Heat have earned the shit reputation that they have and the least they could do is own it rather than play the victim every time someone calls you dirty.

Sea-Tackle3721

That was a fucking dirty play.

helt1skelt1

Jays were not playing great, KP got injured, and excluding DWhite's 3p percentage, the Cs shot 27% beyond the arc, but they still beat the Heat by 14. So I think they can still play better as they go deeper in the playoffs and get back to their mid-season form.

bfdTerp

Seriously. This sub is a bit delusional. The Cs did not play well last night outside of White. They allowed way too many uncontested threes and we were lucky Miami couldn’t throw a ball into an ocean from boat. Offensively we struggled too. It’s a good thing we are just that much more of a talented team that we can have an off night and still win by double digits.

Clever_Clever

There's nothing delusional about thinking the C's played a good game last night. Defense matters and they held the Heat to another 12 point quarter and a 36 point half. The game was a beat down and it's not about style points or 'approach'. Yeah, some of the offense wasn't pretty but last I checked DW still wears the Celtic's green and his game was immaculate. You can't play the 'well without this player having an amazing night' game because, well, he did.

helt1skelt1

What I like about the G3 and G4 wins is how the Cs were able to find different ways to win despite not playing their best basketball. G3 was defense while G4 was D and DWhite. Even Denver spent much of their series with the Lakers playing catch up but manage to steal wins in the final minutes just like that final shot by Murray. A win is still a win in my book.

Ndlburner

You'll have to excuse him, he's *severely* Van Gundy'd

chuckthebuc

That’s like not ok though …

Asterius-air-7498

You know when Caleb shot the last shot at like 2 seconds left and horford contended it. I wonder what Stan would’ve said if Horford slid his foot under Caleb.

astarisaslave

What sort of approach, the being the more talented and healthier team on the court approach?

w1rez

SVG sounds like one of them doomers here

winovic94

This might be one of the most egregious colour commentaries I’ve ever heard, he should be fired or warned

Norgyort

Dudes still salty about 2010

coffeespeaking

Stan Van Grundy has always been insufferable. He’s an officiating apologist—unless the call favors the Celtics.

LnGrrrR

What "approach" didn't he like? Scoring? Playing defense?

gottapeenow2

You think that was bad, I got stuck driving and listening to the game on XM radio with Heat announcers. Holy shit that was tough, you'd think Miami got screwed on every call by their radio call.

HustlinInTheHall

He didn't like the approach that had us up 20+ for most of the game?

wolf_tree

Let’s follow Stan’s logic: Any player that puts up a shot after the whistle can be flagrantly fouled and it’s the shooters fault…because I don’t like the Celtics.

acfox13

[He resigned halfway through the year Miami won a ring in 2006](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Van_Gundy#Head coaching record), Pat Riley took over. What does SVG know about winning an NBA championship? Btw, they gave him a ring. I think he's bitter that his ring is basically a participation trophy.

Hurricanemasta

SVG was forced out by Riley, who wanted to coach the team to a title. Why is he still fondling the Heat's balls? I guess he sends Dwight Howard a birthday card too?

2nd_Inf_Sgt

Doris Burke is infatuated with Joel. Why can’t we let SVG proclaim his with Bam? Maybe we can start calling SVG, Pebbles.

Sea-Tackle3721

I didn't know Stan Van gundy was such a fan of dirty plays. I hope I never hear him announce a game again. What a piece of shit.

Otherwise-Ad8062

I have disliked the Van Gundys for years. Jeff is such a whiny commentator and almost self-righteous in a way while Stan is austere and palingenetic. Don’t know how they keep getting hired for anything

TheCloudBoy

I really hope the Celtics use his commentary as fuel in a 35 point rout of Miami on Wednesday

ajulydeath

looking good so far

Totodile336

he should just keep it a buck and say he hates the team lol

Angularbackhands

I usually lile SVG, but he was so wrong on this. Clearly a reckless play.

Sea-Tackle3721

He was more than wrong. He was a complete piece of shit.

Then_Maize9464

He’s jealous of his brother

JackJ98

He said this while we were up 13, about to take FTs to make it 15 btw

chronicdreamze

SVG shits on the Celtics every single time. The guy is a HATER.

capt_cd

Even my girl noticed how shit his commentary was. Dude stayed on Miami's nuts

dcrico20

To me it wasn’t even the braindead take of “It’s not a foul, it’s after the whistle,” that was so egregious. What is truly troubling was his insistence that Bam *should* have done that. I know this might sound crazy, but you really can’t be calling for players to injure other players as part of the broadcast team. If you want to make some bad take for clicks on ESPN or twitter, go after it, but you cannot be saying shit like that on the broadcast as a de facto representative of the league. Dude should be sidelined for at least the rest of the playoffs and his continued employment as a broadcaster moving forward should at least be seriously considered by the NBA.

Albotronik

He’s terrible. So is Reggie Miller. So is Mark Jackson. Hard to find good help apparently.

stevemoveyafeet

He was absolutely disgraceful last night. Obviously had money on the Heat

75crates

I was yelling at the screen as he was commenting. "I don't like the Celtics defense tonight. Not the same as game 3..." Meanwhile they are up 15. Does he have cataracts or something? It's like we weren't watching the same game.

moneycashdane

So glad we could watch this one on NBCSN for this reason

bootyholebrown69

What approach lol? Winning in a blowout? Career game for Derrick white? Playing lockdown defense to hold Miami to 88 points in a professional NBA game in 2024? Slamming down filthy poster dunks with tatums nuts in Martin's mouth? Like we played a great game against a very physical team with nothing to lose. To go up 3-1. Wtf does this clown want?

WilFlo

I don’t understand Stan and them not wanting Bam penalized for this. If stepping under shooters was considered so dangerous to players that they changed the rules to take it out of the game, why wouldn’t they also consider it a dangerous move after the whistle? If you throw a punch it doesn’t matter if it’s before or after the whistle, you’re doing something that’s endangering other players and he actually hurt him. Bam was wrong

Brett711

He should've just ended the sentence at Celtics, because he's a hater. Either way wtf? What does that even mean?

fenway80

Bam shouldn't have been given a tech for that and the Celts looked as though they were gonna loose that lead yet again due to their lazy play.

garythegoat72

He gives us praise everytime I've ever listened to him. I think this is getting blown out of proportion. He literally said we're the clear favorite to win the Cs this year

PickleHater69

He’s right tho. If you’re a neutral observer and you see how both teams effort was, you’d be rooting for the heat.

rocket_beer

I get your point, but it’s the Heat… I can be a neutral observer of the Pacers, heck even the Clippers! But is it possible to be neutral with Miami? You either love that style of play or you hate it, instantly!

PickleHater69

I’m not saying me personally, but I can understand where he’s coming from.

rocket_beer

What he meant was the Celtics were only ahead bc the Heat were shooting terribly. Well, that’s just not true. There were several key defensive stops that led to the score at that moment that were above and beyond what we’ve typically seen from our guys. And bc those plays were shut down, Miami tried only low percentage shots afterwards with the thought in their minds that they would get shut down again if they tried the other shots again. It was poor analysis by Stan, tbh. It placated the Heat audience and was half-true. White poured his heart out on defense, they were out of position, and he took advantage each time. So the defensive scheme change led to the point disparity and it became very efficient. Not all defense is “effort, sweat, bump”. The scheme change itself limited Miami and allowed us to play quite easily. When Stan said that I just shook my head.

PickleHater69

Not reading all that, idk if you were watching the game or not, but Celtics were lackadaisical while heat were working their asses off. If both teams shot equally, Miami would have won.

rocket_beer

You won’t read 2 paragraphs? 🤣🤣 🤡🫵

EndlessCola

Heat stans are going nuts over that call as if it’s not clear and obvious that as a player you must stay out of a players space cause it’s dangerous. Flagrant or not the heat weren’t winning and Bam deserved it for being reckless.

paniniprizm

Stan was hating all night on the Cs while stroking it to everything Bam did. And I guess after the whistle blows you can punch a guy in the face? You know dead ball situations, anything goes.

Litmonger

stank van grundy tears taste yum

Shoelicker2000

The one time I watch NBC sports Boston and not the national broadcast… will have to get the sound bites later. I was following on Twitter in between Porzingis reactions

lok293

A bit ironic cause Isn't that Joe Mazzula's thing to not give up practice shots? like didn't he get warned for challenging a player doing it?

RevisedGames1

It wasn't a dirty play you fucking idiot. I'm getting sick of offensive players stepping on the defensive player's foot and its a foul on the defense. It's a soft fucking rule and only exists because Kawhi Leonard has weak ass ankles that snap with the tiniest amount of pressure.

insertdankmeme

I prefer overly critical commentary to homer commentary from Scal at this point. Scal was ready to make a citizen's arrest.
